Proper setup for using two computers and backup drives?

I've just purchased Aperture 3 and want to fix a longstanding problem I've had with my workflow and setup in Lightroom. I've got an iMac and a MBP and what I'd like to do is use the iMac as my main computer for Aperture. My plan is to import my existing files into Aperture and copy them to an external (non-portable) hard drive for back-up purposes. Based on this, I'd have two copies of each file, one each on the iMac and the back-up drive, right?
I also use my MBP for a lot of photo editing work while on the road, but don't have a lot of drive space on it. I've bought a 750GB hard drive and I'd like to have the Library on this drive as well for use on the MBP. I know this would give me three copies of each file, but it would also give me some peace of mind in the event I somehow lost the info on the 750GB drive. I don't want copies of the images on the MBP directly as I don't have enough space.
Can this setup be "easily" done and if I make a change in an image on one computer will it be synchronized between the two computers and the two external hard drives? I guess in plain English, what I'd like to achieve is the ability to work on either computer and have the most recent versions synchronize when I attach the 750GB drive to the iMac, with the non-portable external drive as the back-up for the synchronized Library.
Thanks in advance for any help,
Kevin

No, vaults only look after a managed library. A referenced library has to be backed up manually.
There are a few reasons i prefer to use a referenced set up. I use a MBPro on the road for long periods and sometimes high volumes of large image files, so the limited capacity HD is no longer a problem.
Aperture does not slow down with a referenced library as the HD fills.
The Vaults cannot be accessed like manual back ups can, there is no way of knowing what is in there, you hope it is your entire Aperture library.
With manual project backup you have a more manageable size that is much more versatile, and is viewable because of its smaller size. You can delete stuff and then restore it from the backup.
It is safer in my opinion to not have all the library in a single library folder. Much safer split up by project.
When i did use a managed library and Vaults there were times when i wanted stuff off the Aperture library but still kept in the vault, which was not possible.

  • Using two computers and nano

I am just about buying Ipod nano and this kind of question comes to my head. Ok. I use two computers at the same time (PC + laptop) as I travel a lot, so I'd like to know whether I can use nano on both of them? Meaning, can I plug nano to PC, download music, then get to train/plane and plug it to my laptop and download new stuff onto nano?
I've heard that nano registers to only one computer. Is it true? Does it mean that I cannot listen to music stored on my laptop if it is registered to PC?

Actually, the page I linked to is on this site. It's part of Apple's "Knowledge Base." Under the main support site, if you search for a problem, articles like the one I linked to will be found.

  • Looking for the perfect workflow on two computers and backup photo's and synchronize LR 5

I work on two computers. A workstation in the studio and a laptop. I have a harddisk inside the computer containing all photo's. I have a external disk to backup these photo's.
On the worksation LR catalog sits on a second internal disk. LR runs from another disk. (On the laptop LR runs and contains the catalog on the same disk)
When working on location I download my photo's to this external harddisk. I also use this external disk to work on my photo's on location (home) with my laptop. Back in the studio I sync the internal and external harddisks.
I work with LR5 on both the computer and the laptop. After synchronizing the harddisks I open LR and synchronize the folder(s) using " Synchronize Folder ".
The adjustments I made to the photo's are still there because LR stores these in the RAW files and I use " Include Develop settings in metadata inside JPEG, TIFF, PNG and PSD files "
But the Virtual copies are not there. I understand why this is happening. I read all about exporting and importing Catalogs.
How can I synchronize the LR catalog?
For example. I worked on location. I imported the photo's to the external disk attached to the laptop. I worked on the photo's using LR on the laptop. The next day I want to work on them in the studio using my computer.
In order not to lose any adjustments and virtual copies I have te export the folder containing the new photo's and import them with LR on my studio computer. I have to include the RAW files in this export: " Export negative files "
    What is the problem?
So I will need another harddisk. Next the export takes forever. Then I have to import it again. Takes forever too. When I synchronize the harddisk (using synchronizing software) it goes very quickly. But I lose the virtual copies because the LR catalog cannot be synchronized .
I tried to export the new files as a catalog without "Export negative files" and then after synchronizing the harddisks import this catalog on the second computer.
    This is what happens:
LR does not see the photo's are already there. The option to import only the metadata is grayed out. It is not possible to tell LR where it should import the photo's. Then LR could see the files are already there and it only has to import the metadata changes.
Because I need to work on my photo's in the studio and on location this is realy a big problem.
I know I can work from a external disk on both computers. But that will slow down the workflow extremely because the catalog and the photo's are on the same disk. There are 261.216 photo's in this catalog. So export as a catalog back and forth is not a option.
Using Export As A Catalog also is a problem.
When I import new photo's from my camera (card) it is possible to tell LR where to store the files using a Date Format.
    I use YYYY / YYYY-MM / YYYY-MM-DD:
But when I want to Import From A Other Catalog and tell LR where to store the files it does not see the folder structure already exciting. This a root problem. So it will put the folders where I direct it to and then I have to move the new photo's manually to the correct folders.
If the folder already excists it cannot merge them. In that case I have to move the new photo's from each day into the appropriate folder for each day !
This folder structure is important for me because many older photo's are not taged, but are easy to be found by date.
I probably are overlooking something and the solution is very simple. But I cannot find it ...
QUESTION : can anyone tell me what would be the best workflow in my case ? And still have a fast system ?

Here's what I do with the laptop/desktop workflow. Dedicate an big, fast external drive and place ALL Photo's, LR's catalog and presets (set preferences to Store Preset's with Catalog). You have one drive that has all the data you need to access your images and database on any number of computers. All the computer needs is a working copy of Lightroom. Clone that external drive to the backup drive, a 2nd external. Make as many clone's as you wish (one offsite, one in a fire proof safe, one to take on location etc). When one drive has newer data, just clone that to the others, they are all now in sync. One catalog. One master drive. The drive has all images and necessary associated files LR needs to work with (the expectation is lens and DNG camera profiles, the later can be embedded into a DNG and is thus on the drive too).

  • Shared Variables using Two Computers and Crossover Cable

I'm just trying to put together a simple bench test tying two computers together by a crossover cable.  They ping correctly to each other.  I used the LabVIEW examples for TCP connections and they talk correctly that way too.  I try to build and deploy shared variables on one computer, but the other computer will not identify the SV's on the first computer and vice versa.
Can someone give me some details on how to build, deploy, and effectively use SV's?  I've read all the NI documentation, but I'm not getting the step-by-step approach very well.

  • Backup two computers- and backup my backup

Okay--- so had a MB.  Had my 2TB Time Capsule backing that computer up and in addition two external hard drives.
Now, my primary computer is going to be my new iMac and will bring some files from the MB hard drive and the two externals will probably be permanently (for most part) attached to my iMac.
I went to go try to backup my iMac with the externals on.  And, my TC did not recognize the externals as the same drives (IE it wants to backup the whole entire drive again....) and, in doing such, the 2TB will be full.  So, now it must begin to delete old data, which I haven't allowed yet.
I know one option I have is to move all files to where I want them.  Then, delete the TC and start over (as right now I have no files that I am missing).  Have it backup my iMac with the externals and my MB (if I choose to include that on my backup as well--- it is turning into my children's computer now).
However, I am still facing an issue I had before (I wanted to have a backup of my backup in the instance that my house burnt down.)  Many people suggest these online backup servers, which I did for a while.  Problem is they don't support backing up external drives, which is where a majority of my important info is (iMovie projects, photos, etc as those get so large that they eat up my hard drive space.)
So (per one person's recommendations on these boards), what I had done was attached a 3TB hard drive to my MB (before purchasing the iMac) and had identified that hard drive as my TM location [for argument sake we will say July 1, 2012].  It backed up etc.  I had my husband take that hard drive to his work.  I relinked to my TC as my TM location.... and it acted like it was gonna start all over.... but I don't "think" it did.  I might be wrong on that.  But, later, I tried to go back to previous days [prior to July 1, 2012] and it would not go before that date that I relinked it to the TC.
This isn't going to be my longtime solution I am guessing?
Basically, I want to ideally backup my iMac and my MB (at least until I know for sure I have everything brought over from my MB) on my TC.  But, right now, the TC is at 1.5TB, and it will not begin backup of my iMac bc the externals make them exceed the capacity (even though they really are already on the TC as they were attached to my MB- and are now attached to my iMac).
However, I want to also have a workflow that covers myself in the case of theft or fire.  Having a backup of my iMac and MB does me no good if either of the previous tragedies happen.  And, apparently the TC is not smart enough to realize what is already on there, else it would be able to go back to when I first started doing TM a while back[October 2010] (vs relinked July 2012) and it would realize it has already backed up these two external hard drives, it is just connected to a different Apple product.
Help me backup my iMac and MB (and the externals).  And help me backup my TC.  Please!  Thanks in advance!  (Oh also... my iMac is on Mountain Lion... my MB is on Lion if that matters).

How much data is being backed-up from each Mac?  (see what's shown for Estimated size of full backup under the exclusions box in Time Machine Prefs > Options).
Is there any other data on your Time Capsule, besides the backups?
Most likely, there just isn't room.  Time Machine may be trying to do a very large (or full) backup of one or both Macs, and can't.  Since it won't ever delete the most recent backup, there has to be enough room for one full backup plus whatever it's trying to back up now, plus 20% (for workspace).

  • Using two computers and one ipod

    Hi,
I currently have itunes on my windows xp desktop and now on my windows vista laptop. I would like to be able to plug in my ipod and use it as normal on both computers - is there a way to do this? Why does the ipod not work as a normal plug and play device as many other smaller memory mp3 players?

You can manually manage music (depending on the ipod model):

My daughter (Italy) and I (US) are building a website for her upcoming wedding. She has a website up on me.com and I am trying to add content to the website - both editing existing pages and adding new pages. She will be doing the same. Our email will not support exchanging a "domain."

Rather than using iWeb, consider building your web site using a free, web-based system such as:
    SnapPages
    SynthaSite.
    Viviti
    Shutterfly
    Google Sites
...presumably, using any one of the above, you could share the user-id and password, and take turns to update the site.

.  I have Adobe Actobat 7.0 Standard for quite a while, and I'm happy with it. I use it for mainly filings at the federal court.  They require PDF.  I use two computers in two different states for work.  I realize my Adobe 7.1 is a few years old, but sometimes I have difficulty using it with the other days downloading a boarding pass, and e filing at the USDC. .  There's a problem with Adobe Flash, media, etc.  and other Adobe programs, (which I use for downloading boarding passes for airlines, etc.) so basically I have to delete these other Adobe programs, besides the Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Standard if I want to 7.0 Standard to work.  I periodically download the updates, but there's still a problem. My question is:  Can or should I purchase another program to update the present Adobe Acrobat 7.0 standard, or just buy a new program such as the Adobe 11?  Am I mistakenly doing something wrong, such as when I download?  I'm an old valued customer so I don't want to spend a lot of money since I am replacing my Dell XP for a new computer now, and my other computer is a Dell Vista.
    I'd appreciate your valued advice.

If you are getting a new computer (for a PC it would have Win 7 or 8), then you will need to purchase XI if you wish to continue using Acrobat. Acrobat 7 is not compatible with these systems (and probably the same for MAC systems), though sometimes workarounds are possible, though not easy to use. I guess the answer is to buy the new version. Try http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/software._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software _sl_mostpopular.html, click on the Buy for Acrobat, and then select the version you want.

I need to find out how to get it restored. I can send screen shots of all of the drive location where the drive is still good and I can see my Adobe Acrobat pro information, but the download itself is missing. NEXT STEP?

If you are talking about Reader (you did post in the Reader forum), then just download http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise. However Reader is free not purchasable. You can download a trial then install using your serial number, which if you didn’t register or write down somewhere you will be out of luck to track down.

    Hi...
My name is Turgay and have been using computer since 1982... 2 years ago, because of my friend's advice, i bought an iMac... It was the first Mac that i use... Till that, i was using normal PC's...
I bought an 24" iMac on July 2009 and started to use... I realized that i spent my 27 years for using (fixing) computers. Because the Mac was perfect. After iMac, i was really fine with my computer... But after something, that doesn't bother me, happened. The screen started to get cloudy and black... And it increased. Because of this i took my iMac to your authorised distributor http://www.bilkom.com.tr...
They changed my screen but in 2 months it happened 3 times and i wanted them to change my iMac with new one, under customer laws... In our country, the device must be changed with new one if the same problem occurs in 3 months. Because i know the customer satisfaction of Apple, i didn' worry about it but Bilkom refused my will... I spoke with them for 2 months but nothing happened, they just told me, it' not our problem.
Because of this speech, i sued them on June 2011... Last week, i won the case but just for the return of invoince... It costs 3.200 Turkish Liras (1.800$) and there's no 24" iMac unused... Bilkom again refused to give me an iMac... I thought that Apple's customer satisfaction can't be like this... I didn't write anything to Apple till now but if i can't get an iMac, i must return to normal PC after 2 years... And i don't want that... I offered an iMac 27" with core i7... No matter Bilkom accepts or not, they don't care of me... I'm a customer, they should do... I've never seen such a like company. I hope the real Apple will help my problem and save me from Bilkom...
Waiting for your reply... Thanks and regards...

Unfortunately, you are not communicating with Apple here - we are all other users volunteering our time to help with technical problems.
Here is a list of Apple contacts; there is no email address  - you will need to write a letter to their corporate headquarters or call them:

Although, it appears that your problem is with a third party store and that you have won in court - did you get your money back? 24" iMacs have not been made since 2009 or 2010. Now there are 21" and 27" iMacs.

  • Using two computers

use MacBookPro at home for itunes, music/vid and photos but need to use work PC for contacts and cal.
Is it as simple as downloading latest itunes on PC then turning off autosync features so it doesn't try to use the PC for music - then manually syncing just the contacts and cal?
Will this create any problems with registering the iphone to two separate machines? Will it eat one of the 5 licenses for purchased songs even if I don't let the music move from the iphone to the PC?
Also, any way to alter exchange server settings to make IMAP support the Cal and Contacts? or any other way to have them sync without physical connection to the PC.

I have spent several days going through every posting on using 2 computers and I have been unable to make it work. I use an intel iMac at the office and must sync contacts and calendars there. My home machine is a MacBook Pro and home to my music, videos etc. I have set the sync operation as manual on both, only contacts and calendars from the iMac and only the music, photos & videos from the MacBook Pro. I sync from the MacBook all looks and plays properly, go to work and sync to update the contacts & calendars and they sync fine but now I have NO music/books/photos/video. I'm running the most current software and just haven't been able to make this seemingly simple process work!

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.

At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
