Proper Setup of Timemachine

Hello everyone,
i am new to the Mac world...but have been a long time techie in the windows enviornment and had a few questions on the proper setup of Timemachine. I have a 500gb Western Digital external HD setup as my Timemachine drive which works fine when i am logged in and when my computer isnt in sleep mode. I have figured how to automount the disk so when i am not logged in that the backup can still run. the main problem is that when the computer goes to into sleep mode the backup never happens because timemachine does not wake the pc up from sleep to perform the backup. I have tried to do some searching on this and it seems that this is a normal function of timemachine...which is fine but how can the hourly backups possibly occur for everyone if the pc is constantly going into sleep mode...
any thoughts, ideas or tips would be much appreciated..
thanks
Al

If the computer is asleep, what is there to back up? The worst case analysis is that the last backup was 59 minutes before your computer went to sleep. When it wakes up again the backup will take place.
*but how can the hourly backups possibly occur for everyone if the pc is constantly going into sleep mode...*
This statement suggests that you are using the TM backup drive to back up more than just your own computer. If that is the case then obviously the computer cannot be permitted to go to sleep. Then again, if the drive is actively being shared by others, it shouldn't be able to go to sleep without your direct intervention.

  • Proper setup of the IDM Account in SAP Backend

    Hi there!
    On my current project, I am being asked about the proper setup of the SAP Account that IDM will use to provision users in an ABAP system.
    What T-codes, objects, and values do you use?  Do you assign any specifc roles?
    Thanks for your help!
    Regards,
    Matt

    Hi Matt,
    the needed role is shipped with design time installation set:
    Upload the role to ABAP, create technical user and assign the role to the user and you're good to go.
    If they're SAP-authorization people who ask the questions they'll know what's in the file.

  • What is the proper setup for Gmail on iOS

    I have been struggling with this since I made the switch to iPhone in November.   I use gmail and would like my emails to be sent from my own domain.   Exchange no longer works.  Any help is appreciated

    Google stopped supporting their version of Exchange (ActiveSync) unless you have a premium GMail account.
    The "proper" setup depends on your preferences and needs.
    You can use the standard iOS profile to set up your GMail account using the standard iOS Mail app, or use the GMail app.  The GMail app supports Push, the standard iOS GMail does not.
    If you want your Google contacts to be available on your iPhone, the GMail app will pull a contact into a new message without the contacts actually being installed in your iOS Contacts app, but of course they won't be available for any other purpose.  The standard iOS profile for GMail does not let you sync your Google contacts, so the best route is to set up your Google contacts as a CardDAV account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4872?viewlocale=en_US
    This is done as an additional account to your iOS GMail account (or just set up contacts only and use the GMail app).
    The GMail app does not provide Calendar or Notes support, only the iOS GMail profile does.
    Personally I use the standard iOS GMail account for Mail, Calendar, and Notes, and set up a separate CardDAV account to sync my Google contacts.  I'm OK with not having Push support for mail, there are more important things to fret over.

  • WSUS on Server 2012 Standard R2 with SCCM 2012 Standard R2 Proper Setup

    What is the proper setup (best practice) on setting up WSUS using Server 2012 Standard R2 to work properly with SCCM 2012 R2 Standard using Server 2012 Standard R2 on separate box?
    1. Is it using WID or database during the setup of WSUS using Server 2012 Standard R2?
    2. Once it setup properly on WSUS using Server 2012 Standard R2 either WID or database (using SQL 2012 Standard SP1), how do I connect with SCCM 2012 R2 Standard using Server 2012 Standard R2 on separate box?
    3. On SCCM 2012 R2 Standard using Server 2012 Standard R2 just need to add WSUS Role, right? Is it using WID or database?
    Thanks,
    Reza

    1. Generally, using the SQL instance you use for ConfigMgr is preferred.
    2. The Software Update Point connects ConfigMgr to a WSUS instance.
    3. See 2.
    Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com
    It's just as Jason said. The SUP role in SCCM basically "sits on top" of the WSUS role, whether it is local or remote is up to you. You basically install WSUS on a server like you normally would WITHOUT configuring it. I have used both WID and SQL. It's
    always nicer to put it on your SQL server since that is (should be) backed up regularly and maintained.
    Once you have WSUS installed you just point SCCMs SUP role at the installation and it takes over the rest.

  • Proper Setup of my DataBase Access

    We are currently building our first datalayer for use on Weblogic Portal. This datalayer is connecting to SQL Server. We are connecting via JNDI name cal.
    At this stage we have successfully built a successful SQL Select statement call and what I believe to be a clunky stored procedure call.
    I am trying to find a tutorial on the proper way to build my data-access functions.
    How do I create a nice generic stored procedure call. This function should take a stored procedure name and an array of parameters. Currently I created my call signature too closely integrated into my business logic. In our .NET version data layer we would pass a hashtable consisting of parameter names and values. Missing parameters would be used as defaults by the stored procedure. But this same style would seem to cause a problem in the JAVA world, given the string building nature of the call.
    Once again my goal is to have a generic database utility class that would allow for query and execute calls of stored procedures (I want to get rid of direct SQL calls).

    There won't be any generic package in java for running any stored procedure.
    This is because a SQLServer stored procedure can return any series of result
    sets and/or update counts, so the processing of the procedure has to be
    specific to what it does. I could write a stored procedure that returns
    a result set, 3 result sets, or none, depending on the time of day...
    That being said, here is the ideal Java form for executing a procedure in
    JDBC, and the loop for processing everything any procedure could return:
    boolean getResultSetNow = ps.execute();
    int updateCount = -1;
    while (true) { // handle all in-line results from any procedure
    if (getResultSetNow) {
    ResultSet r = ps.getResultSet();
    while (r.next()) {
    // fully process result set before calling getMoreResults() again!
    r.close();
    } else {
    updateCount = ps.getUpdateCount();
    if (updateCount != -1) { // it's a valid update count
    if (you want) System.out.println("Processing an update count of " + updateCount);
    if ((!getResultSetNow) && (updateCount == -1)) break; // only when both are true are we done with the loop
    getResultSetNow = ps.getMoreResults();
    // if ps is a CallableStatement and there are output parameters,
    // get them now after the loop.

  • I'm new to mac and I'm not sure if I have made a proper setup of my email account

    I can receive some mails but not all. I'm receiving emails through my PC Outlook that I'm not receiving with the Mac Book Air Mail.
    I don't understand what is going on. Maybe something's wrong with my email account settings?

    If the setup assistant doesn't have your mail server in its database, then you'll have to find out from the service provider what the correct settings are.

  • Proper setup for using two computers and backup drives?

    I've just purchased Aperture 3 and want to fix a longstanding problem I've had with my workflow and setup in Lightroom. I've got an iMac and a MBP and what I'd like to do is use the iMac as my main computer for Aperture. My plan is to import my existing files into Aperture and copy them to an external (non-portable) hard drive for back-up purposes. Based on this, I'd have two copies of each file, one each on the iMac and the back-up drive, right?
    I also use my MBP for a lot of photo editing work while on the road, but don't have a lot of drive space on it. I've bought a 750GB hard drive and I'd like to have the Library on this drive as well for use on the MBP. I know this would give me three copies of each file, but it would also give me some peace of mind in the event I somehow lost the info on the 750GB drive. I don't want copies of the images on the MBP directly as I don't have enough space.
    Can this setup be "easily" done and if I make a change in an image on one computer will it be synchronized between the two computers and the two external hard drives? I guess in plain English, what I'd like to achieve is the ability to work on either computer and have the most recent versions synchronize when I attach the 750GB drive to the iMac, with the non-portable external drive as the back-up for the synchronized Library.
    Thanks in advance for any help,
    Kevin

    No, vaults only look after a managed library. A referenced library has to be backed up manually.
    There are a few reasons i prefer to use a referenced set up. I use a MBPro on the road for long periods and sometimes high volumes of large image files, so the limited capacity HD is no longer a problem.
    Aperture does not slow down with a referenced library as the HD fills.
    The Vaults cannot be accessed like manual back ups can, there is no way of knowing what is in there, you hope it is your entire Aperture library.
    With manual project backup you have a more manageable size that is much more versatile, and is viewable because of its smaller size. You can delete stuff and then restore it from the backup.
    It is safer in my opinion to not have all the library in a single library folder. Much safer split up by project.
    When i did use a managed library and Vaults there were times when i wanted stuff off the Aperture library but still kept in the vault, which was not possible.

  • Proper setup for Google Analytics within BC?

    I've done a good bit of research and searching, and so far I've found:

    These resources are fairly dated, so it's difficult to know if you're following along correctly. I've even read a good bit of Google's documentation on how Analytics works, but I'm still unsure as to whether or not my setup is working properly.
    Everything seems to be tracking, but under "Real-Time" view in Google Analytics, one user will become two as soon as they click the checkout button... Is that normal? I guess I'm asking for others to share their "base" setup is for Analytics on BC e-commerce sites. Or even just tips and resources... Anything! Thanks.

    Hi again Angela
    This is RoboHelp HTML, no?
    If so, you should be able to do the following:
    * Click View > Pods > Project Setup
    * Right-click the Templates pseudo-folder and choose "New
    Topic Template"
    * Name the Template and click OK
    * Click View > Footer (Or View > Header - But Footer is
    probably more clean for this)
    * Click Insert > HTML > Advanced > Script
    * Paste your snippet of code and click OK (You should see red
    boxes in your footer)
    * Click Window > Close all
    * Click View > Pods > Topic List
    * Press Ctrl+A to select all topics
    * Right-click the selection and choose Properties
    * Click the General tab
    * Click the drop-down and choose your template, then click
    OK. It should then apply the footer to all the topics in your
    project.
    That should get you pretty near to what you are seeking.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Proper setup for home office

    I have a domain (mydomain.com) and static IP's from our provider with RDNS setup properly. AEBS is providing DHCP & DNS and I have a few questions. Config is this (net)--(modem)--(aebs)--(macmini)
    1. What should the settings in the AEBS be? Should it be providing DNS servers of our ISP to clients or should it be handing out the IP of the MacMini.
    2. We have a domain with RDNS but when setting up the macmini what should I put in the hostname field so that all external services work well. In 10.5 this was very very key you did it right. So would I put apple.mydomain.com?
    Thanks,
    DM

    Kia ora DD,
    What services is SLServer running, it will be your OD master I assume, and DNS, and I assume DHCP is handled by your AEBS?
    I think the dns references should point to the ip address of your server, so that the clients are 'sent' to it first, then if the resource they are looking for is not there then the server will send that request on elsewhere, usually to the router, which is looking 'outside', and sends the request out into the 'net'.
    As far as the DNS entry of the server is concerned the relationship between the FQDN (the base domain name for example 'sausage.com') and the hostname (computer name for example 'beef') still exists, but it is not as tricky. The computer name is used in some services locally, on the internal network and may be found for some services at beef.local, some services need the FQDN, but most need the hostname; beef.sausages.com.
    As far as the setup is concerned I put my FQDN in the first box and the computer name in the second, and if you look at the DNS services in Server Admin or info pane in serverpreferences, they should show the consequences of how you named you box etc at the initial setup.
    As far as your ISP is concerned they should be sending any external request to your static ip, and that will be handled by your server as long as the mail exchanger records at you ISP are the same as the mail exchange record in the DNS services pane of Server admin.
    I would recommend reinstalling multiple times until you have it is as you want it,
    I think!

  • Proper setup for a network with Public Static IPs and Private IPs

    hello all-
    i am trying to setup a network with public static IP addresses and local (internal) IP addresses with 192.168.xxx.xxx format. i will try to explain as best i can how i have it set up and what my issues are.
    i have COX business services in my home and 8 static public IPs assigned to me. i have tried setting this up and everything internally (192.168.xxx.xxx) works fine and all the devices can get to the outside world fine but when i try to access ANY of the devices on the public IPs from outside the network i get absolutely nothing. the browser just times out and i cannot ping the devices even though COX can see and says the devices are bridging over. COX is unable to get a response when they ping the devices either.
    one of the devices is a Synology NAS with one Ethernet port that is using a public IP and the other using a 192.168.xxx.xxx address. when the Ethernet port is setup using a static public IP COX can see it but they get no response from a ping and when they go to the address to get the login page the browser times out. when i reconfigure the port for DHCP it grabs a public DHCP address and when COX pings that they get a response AND they are able to type the DHCP adress in their browser and get to the login page no problem. when i switch back to the static IP they can see it but again are unable to get a response from a ping and are unable to go to the login page.
    my setup is:
    COX Modem (only has 1 Ethernet port) ====>> 8 port NETGEAR Gigabit switch (all devices with Public IPs are plugged into the NETGEAR switch)
    NETGEAR switch ====>> WAN Port on Airport Extreme (latest version w/all software updates)
    LAN Port Airport Extreme ====>> CISCO 2960 48 port Gigabit Switch (all internal devices are plugged into the CISCO switch)
    like i said everything with the 192.168.xxx.xxx connects and i can connect to just fine but none of the devices with public static IPs can be pinged even though COX can see them bridging over. i have tried all new cables on the devices and that didn't work so it has to be something with my setup.
    do i need to add another router to this configuration because i have extra airport extremes lying around i can use if someone could just tell me how the setup should be. i also have a few ports open on the CISCO switch; is there a way i can use it for the 4-5 devices that have public IPs? or will that cause a problem with all the other devices plugged into it with the 192.168.xxx.xxx IP addresses?
    i'm not a networking guru (obviously) so if you are able to help me get this setup properly can you try not to use Doctoral Level syntax in your response? i would greatly appreciate it!
    i appreciate any and all help... thx in advance!

  • What is the proper setup in BIOS when using promise raid controller

    I am using the k7n2g-islr board and using the on-board promise controller.  Everything has been working ok, but all of a sudden I get a "disk read error".  THe Promise Bios picks up both my drives (one is serial ATA, the other IDE), so I don't think the hardware has failed (completely anyway).  So, in the main BIOS it doesn't pick up any drives there with autodetect.  So...my question is twofold.  First, should the main BIOS be picking up a drive or not?  Second, what should the boot sequence be to boot of the promise controller (i.e. HDD-0 or SCSI?).
    THanks in advance.

  • Need help to proper setup HPLaserjet 2100 as it has been printing garbage!

    I am new to MacOs. I have had all this time with me an HP Laser 2100 with LPT ports for my old PC. With the PC being junked, I purchased a cable adapter from the printer to USB for my ibookG4. The cable comes with a driver for MacOs. Have it installed, plugin the printer and it was recognized by my ibook.
    However, when i started to print, garbled results. I saw a similar post on Garbled Printing on the discussion forum but it is for Macbook instead for ibook. Similar problems, printing one page results in several pages with garbled message. Seems something to do with the driver itself. Any suggestions appreciated.
    Rgds,

    Use the driver HP Laserjet 6 Series, CUPS + Gimp-Print.
    Since we're talking about an OS X software function here, advice for for one computer model usually applies to other models.

  • Help with Proper DNS Setup for Leopard Standard Server Setup

    Hello All,
    Problem Description-
    I was reviewing some training today on DNS setup and checking for proper setup with the sudo changeip - checkhostname tool and I seem to have an incorrectly configured DNS setup. So I need some help on correcting it. When I go to the "Server Preferences" tool I cannot log in using apple.ourdomainname.com instead in order to use the tool I have to input localhost as the server name. Now I just thought that the system was broken or something and with the help of my training I now see it's a DNS problem. I thought I had everything proper since I followed the steps of creating proper DNS/RDNS entries with my ISP. Now I am stuck wondering what else isn't working properly due to the DNS issue. Thanks in advance.
    Technical Info-
    My ISP provides us with 5 static IP's and we have asked them to create entries and verified the setup of apple.ourdomainname.com = x.x.x.x which is one of our public IP's assigned currently assigned to the WAN port of our Apple Airport Extreme. We have also had them create a PTR record which also is present, verified and functional. Our MacMini running 10.5.5 is connected directly to one of the ethernet ports on our Apple Airport Extreme which is our NAT/Firewall for the LAN. So during the setup of the Standard Server install the OS configured the Airport with the required ports for chat/web/vpn. And mobile Mac's can VPN in and gain folder access and web works fine too. We don't use the e-mail portion so I can't say how that works. The server is using the DNS of 10.0.200.1 which is the IP of the Airport and the airport is programmed with the DNS of OpenDNS servers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. The reason for this whole long shpeal is that I want to give as much technical background as possible for the best possible help.
    Thanks
    DM

    Your issue has nothing to do with upgrading to 5.0, it is a post script printer issue. That output that is printing to your printer is caused because PASTA is not setup correctly. You should be able to query Metalink for PASTA and get the proper setup steps.

  • Large House Setup

    I live in a large house and I am trying to configure a home network from a cable modem connection. The people that lived here before me left an 8 port hub and a 4 port wired router in the basement that are connected to an ethernet port in each bedroom (We have 9). I have my own linksys WRT54G wireless router that I want to put in my centrally located bedroom (instead of the basement) so the whole house can have wireless internet. When I connected everything, I could not access the internet. What would be the proper setup between the cable modem, hub, wired router, and wireless router? Thank you so much, this has been driving me crazy.
    Kenton

    Hi…
    You  network should be  Cable Modem -> Wired Router ( Internet / WAN Port) -> HUB -> Bedrooms -> WRT54G ( EthernetPort). First make sure that the wired router is configured and you are able to go online thru  the wired router. Then connect the HUB to any one of the Ethernet ports of the wired router, connect all the cables from all the rooms to the HUB. Connect a computer to the Ethernet port of the bedroom and make sure that you are able to access the internet.
    Now the important thing is that you need to know what’s the IP address of your wired router. Let’s assume IP address of the wired router to be 192.168.2.1. We need to make sure that the wired router and the linksys wireless router are both  in the same network range. To get both the routers in the same network, connect a computer to the Ethernet port of the wireless router. Reset the router using a pointer object for 30 seconds. Unplug the power…wait for 30 seconds and then reconnect the power to the router. When all the lights on the router are steady, open Internet explorer ……in the address bar type http://192.168.1.1 (default IP address). Leave the username field blank  and in the password type “admin” ( Default Password). When the configuration page loads up fully…..first make all the wireless setting of the router. Save setting. Goto the setup page…Disable the DHCP server of the router. Also change the Local IP Address of the router to 192.168.2.2 (Assuming wired router to be 192.168.2.1). Save settings. Connect the Ethernet port of the bedroom to the Ethernet port of the wireless router. Powercycle the whole network
