Proxies causing browsers to cease functioning

My old workhorse of a G4 has been developing a memory problem of late--if the power cord is unplugged for too long, even in sleep mode it drains out, causing the clock to reset to 1969 and forget my current wi-fi password.  Now though it's developed a new problem--Firefox and Safari both claim proxy settings are getting in the way. I haven't changed any settings, and on a lark I tried clicking off the http and https proxies checked off and on, to no avail.
Funny thing is, everything else works just fine--chat programs, email, anything online that isn't a browser.
So what's really causing them to be shut out?

As for the clock reset, it means that the tiny battery inside that keeps the time has gone dead, which is very likely to happen in any Mac over 5 or 6 years old. I was just reading another thread about that problem here:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3296298?tstart=0
If the large rechargeable battery is running out quickly, that just means it's old. Batteries of that era would start losing charge after 300 charge cycles or so, and after 4-5 years practically all laptop batteries (Mac or PC) will not hold much of a useful charge.
The proxy one is odd. I use proxy software, and I have to keep it up to date or some sites won't work. If you are sure the proxy check boxes are unchecked in your Network preferences, the next question is, have you ever installed any software that filters your Internet connection, like ad-blocking software, hacker protection software, parental control software, virus protection software, VPN software, anonymous web surfing software, etc. Some of those may act like a proxy server. If you have these, try turning them off to see if one is causing the problem, and if you find one that is, update it to the latest version.

Yes, all I can tell you is that Finder does not have that function in ML. Your system is "working as expected".

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • Flash player continuously causes browsers to crash.

I have tried several things to resolve this problem. I originally had the lastest version of flash, and in attempting to play flash based games, I got an error messege saying Windows cannot continue to run flash player/activex 10 and will now close the program. I attempted this on IE8 and Firefox, and the error was the same, so I tried to see if flash 9 or restarting my computer would cause the same problem, and flash 9 as well caused my browsers to crash. I am running windows vista.

_*There are no Mac OS X viruses.*_
Delete your browsers history & cache. Boot up from your install DVD and run *"Repair Disk"* from the Utility menu.
    If that does not work.......................
    Empty the trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps. Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need. Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).
Get rid of all your music files you no longer listen too. Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything. You can even trash directly from Spotlight!
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash. Better yet, download this neat little shareware app demo called AppZapper. It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete. Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs.
Not everyone has the luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or Mobile accounts to store their "stuff.”
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer free storage space. Most if not all do now-a-days.
There are thousands if not millions of free storage facilities on the web also. Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + click to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts. Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke. It does all the work for you. And, best of all it’s FREE.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your current printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored. Get rid of some some them. You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a FREE utility called Monolingual. Another app that apparently does all the work for you. I’ve never used it. However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

Check out User Tips: Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal
    Viruses:
Are programs that earn their name by their ability to replicate themselves locally & often across a network. Many attach themselves to to other programs. When you launch one of these programs, the virus code launches as well & the virus goes about its nefarious business.
Viruses are exceedingly rare on the Mac. There are no known viruses for OSX.
    Trojans:
Promises one thing but delivers another. You can download a program but when you run the program, the contents of your computer are instead beamed to an underground data center in Kamchatka. If you obtain software from reliable sites, you are unlikely to get a Trojan horse.
    Adware:
Has an embedded advertising component - one that displays or downloads ads when you run the software. Some adware is legitimate, part of the price of using a free program such as the Iconfactory's Twitterrific or Eudora for example.
    Spyware:
Grabs data from your computer & ofen uses it for the purposes of evil, sending personal info to a baddie or when you're using your web browser, redirecting you to site you don't want to visit.
Mac users have nothing to worry about regarding Spyware & Adware because in order for the worse forms to work, the OS must allow unrestricted access to its more sensitive parts. The Mac OS doesn't.

  • 10.6.2 Causing Browsers to Freeze on Pages w/Flash?

Every time I navigate to a page that has Flash elements into it (e.g. YouTube), Safari hangs and my computer beach balls. I can't view any pages with Flash elements in them (or at least pages that have multiple Flash elements) without Safari freezing and causing me to kill Safari through Force Quit.
To try to fix this problem, I reset Safari (resetting every available option), repaired permissions, restarted, and nothing worked. Then I used the Flash uninstaller from Adobe's website to uninstall Flash, then reinstall a fresh copy which did not work.
I reinstalled Snow Leopard, updated all of my system's software, and then tried to view YouTube.com and the same problem still occurred.
Now I originally thought that the Safari 4.0.4 update caused the problem. However - after I reinstalled Snow Leopard and updated to 10.6.2, I downloaded to Camino to see if YouTube would work, but to my surprise it didn't. The same exact problem I'm having with Safari (entire browser freezing when viewing a page with Flash such as YouTube) is also happening with a 3rd-party browser (Camino).
This leads me to believe that 10.6.2 may be the source of the problem (as I never had this problem with 10.6.1), not the 4.0.4. Any ideas on how to correct this problem? I cannot go on websites with Flash elements in them, even with a 3rd-party browser.

My Flash problem isn't crashing my browsers -- at least not on the sites I'm visiting -- but I believe I've got the same problem and it has resisted all fixes. I did my first upgrade via Software Update, but I've used the combo installer twice now. I've reset the PRAM multiple times. I've repaired permissions over and over. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Flash player, even tried reverting to Player 9.
No matter what, Flash won't work properly. The problem appears to be in the settings, and may be limited to a failure to permit 3rd-party Flash loads. However, I cannot change my settings. At first, I could at least change local settings via right-clicking on an embedded Flash. That's no longer true; I get the popup window, but no clicks work -- I can't even cancel out.
Meanwhile, the settings panel on the Adobe site hasn't worked since I upgraded my OS to 10.6.2 and Safari to 4.0.4. All checkboxes show up as blank, and most don't change when I click on them. I can move the slider on the amount of data that can be stored on my computer, but neither that no any other settings stick -- just switching tabs and returning shows settings reverted to the default. And no matter what I've done, the settings panels for sites I've already visited shows nothing in its list -- it is not registering any of my previous visits.
This problem affects both Safari and Firefox. However, I also noted that if I try uninstalling Flash while those browers are open, I will be reminded to close Firefox ... but Safari doesn't show up as being active.
Sounds to me like something in either 10.6.2 or Safari 4.0.4 is blocking some component of Flash.

  • Save As PDF causing browsers crash

I've used Safari, Firefox (1.0.7 and 1.5), Internet Explorer, and Mozilla and every time I select "save as PDF" a webpage in the Print feature, it resulted in a browser crash. Every time.
Have Apple addressed this persistently annoying bug already?
    Thanks.

Is there anything helpful in the Console's crash logs? Are you able to print to a printer from any of these browsers? Please provide as much detail as possible.

  • Flash Player causes browsers crash.

Hi, I'm sorry for my bad English. I have a problem with my Mac. *After the upgrade from 10.6 to 10.6.6*, using *all browsers* I can't view webpages with Flash content because *the browsers crash*. The problem is due to the *Flash Player* software. I tried to install the latest version of the browsers and Flash Player, but the problem isn't resolved. Can you help me to fix this problem? Thank you.

Uninstall Flash using the appropriate uninstaller for whichever version of Flash you have installed. Then do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Download the 10.6.6 Combo Updater and reinstall it.
If this doesn't fix the problem then you will have to reinstall Snow Leopard using the installer DVD. This *will not* erase your drive or your files.

  • Whitespace in User Account Name causes issues with various functions

I've run into a few issues with users who have whitespace in their account names (for example, a user account name that was: "Joe Smith"). Generally, I think this is a result of windows interpreting the last name as a parameter when it tries to
run a certain function. One place where this occurs and is easily replicated is in the "Troubleshoot Program Compatibility Wizard" which gives an error about permissions, another place this occurs is in the dx9 web installer which gives an error
    message concerning advpack.dll
In both of these cases I've been able to 'fix' the issue by relocating the TEMP and TMP environment variables to a folder like C:\TEMP, however I still have some issues with other installers and programs such as the 3rd party Cordova build program and the
android sdk which both get stumped by spaces in the user account name. From my understanding there is no way to change a user account name (not just the name which displays but the name which Windows reads) without deleting the account and copying often several
gigabytes of files and settings over to a completely new account. Is this correct? Is there a way to remove the whitespace from an account name without these hackish workarounds? Is there anyway to report this as a bug to Microsoft in the hopes that they either
remove support for usernames with whitespaces or come up with some way to make their internal features like the Compatibility Wizard operate correctly in these (fairly common) install environments? It's an incredibly pesky bug to identify....

    1. Spaces are allowed but not recommended. I would avoid using space(s) in account names.
    2. I do not understand what you have prevented from changing user name.
    3. For problems with 3rd pty programs ask support/forum of respective software vendors.
    4. If you feel like addressing Microsoft, use

  • All of a sudden it seems firefox has forgotten where it is all the time. All my bookmarks and rss feeds are gone and a lot of times it forgets my saved usernames and passwords. The back button has ceased functioning as well.

It just started out of the blue, its like it just forgot everything I've done since I downloaded it years ago. Plus the back button doesn't work anymore. It's like it has constant amnesia.

Sounds that some SQLite database files are corrupted.
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Bookmarks+not+saved#w_fix-the-bookmarks-file
You can also try to repair the places database with this extension:
Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page to log you in automatically.<br />
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.<br />
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you anymore and you need to sign in once again.<br />

  • Flash plugin causes browsers to crash

I'm hoping that someone will be able to able to help me - I'm at the end of my tether at the moment!
Today, for no apparent reason, any web page that includes Flash causes my browser to crash. This happens for Firefox and Safari.
Things I have tried that haven't worked include:
    - Reinstalling Flash version 10
    - Installing Flash version 9
    - A clean install of Firefox 3.5.5 including deleting all user data
    - Using Firefox in safe mode (with all options ticked)
    - Reinstalling Shockwave
    - Resolving some conflicts in Font Book
The entry for Flash in the about:plugins page is:
    Shockwave Flash

    Shockwave Flash 10.0 r32
    MIME Type Description Suffixes Enabled
    application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash swf Yes

  • Multi room viewing causes recordings and dvr functions to fail

Configuration:  HD dvr's in both living room and bedroom.
Watch a show in my living room from the bedroom dvr.  While I am viewing this a new recording starts on the living room dvr.  When I finish watching the bedrooom show and while the living room is still recording I attempt to watch from the beginning the living room show being recorded on the living room TV.  The recording freezes and in fact is never viewable (even days later).  It seems it has been corrupted.
Related to this we were watching a recorded show (from the living room dvr) in the bedroom.  Once finished, tried to rewind the news on the bedroom tv.  Was able to go back the full 20 minutes but would not play back.  The news program was live not on dvr.
Both seem related to watching remotely and then trying to use the local dvr.  Help.

Chuck I am sorry to hear about the DVR's not working right. I have sent you a private message to get more information from you.

  • Nano 3rd Gen. ceased functioning.

Seems like drained battery.  Music wasy playing then ... Stopped.
Now - Nano3rdG won't  power up when connected to computer.  No display, no ... anything "live" or dynamic.
An unchaning null screen shows "Connect to Power" message in a very dull gray screen - like some kind zero power display.  I've tried two different apple power/sync cords and two different USB ports on same computer.
Is this typical for battery failure that requires replacement?

thanks - after two days of being left on the sync cord - , and toggling the lock-unlock button - the device seems to have recovered .. showing full battery power.  Is this a cycle that will occur for a period of time .. or is this one of those lucky "risen from the dead 2-3 days later" that I've read about somewhere.   Bite of the Apple?

  • My iphone4 screen is unresponsive, thus cannot swipe to open key pad for password. I downloaded ios8, which caused loss of screen functionality. Any hope for the poor little thing?

my iphone screen is non interactive (dead) Thus cannot swipe to reveal passcode screen. Think it is a result of downloading ios8, but not fr'sure

You will probably have to restore the phone. Try connecting it to your computer and opening iTunes first. Click Restore.
Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
