PS animation: layer duration

Hi,
Quick question about PS animation:
When I increase the duration of the animation, I have to go through and adjust the duration of each layer individually to the fit the new timeline.
As far as I can tell, there is no option to adjust the duration of multiple layers at once, like in AE. This is a huge timesink, especially when working
with a ton of layers.
Am I missing something and the option is just hidden away somewhere? Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Is this a frame animation? Ctrl (Cmd on Mac) + click on each frame, then change the duration. (Use Shift + click to select a whole range of frames that don't have breaks.)

  • Preferences, Project, can't change project duration or default layer duration

    Having trouble changing the project duration or default layer duration in Preferences. I change them and restart Motion and nothing is changed.
    Probably overlooking something. Help

    There are a couple of ways to lengthen (or shorten) a project once you've started the project.
    1) Select the Project "layer" at the top of the Layers list, then in the Inspector, select the Properties pane and look down for Duration. You can type in the value needed for the length of project. You have the option of using Timecode, Frames, or Seconds.
    2) Set the Canvas "clock" (/playhead position) to the Project length. To do that, click on the clock icon and the "time" should look like 12:15. Click and drag up (or down) on the time value to lengthen or shorten the project.
    When you start Motion and are presented with a Project picker, in the upper right corner of the dialog, you can set the length required (Duration) for your project(s).  Once you start that project with that time length, Motion will remember and all subsequent projects will be created with that time length until you change it at that location again.  I actually haven't set the default project duration in preferences in quite a long time.  However, if Motion is not remembering the project length setting, you might need to Quit Motion, then hold down the Command and Option keys and restart Motion (that should delete preferences and reset Motion to its defaults).

  • Stupid problem - layer duration

    Hi! Just started using After Effects, and I'm having a stupid problem. Can't find any support for this problem anywhere on the web.
    I made a new composition, then imported a Photoshop file with multiple layers into my project. The composition is set to ten seconds of duration. Whether I drag the individual layers from the Photoshop composition into the new composition or I try and edit the original composition itself, the layers will not extend in duration beyond two frames.
    My cursor moves over the edge of the layer, I click and drag the edge, and nothing happens - unless I am moving the layer within its two frame duration.
    The layers are individually called "Photoshop Sequences" in the project window. On the timeline, they appear with two small arrows in the upper right and left corners, like this:
    What am I doing wrong? How can I extend layer duration?

    You have most likely imported the Photoshop file with Photoshop sequence checked. Uncheck and you'll be fine.

  • Creating symbol from animated layer

    Hi all. Newbie post here.
    I created an animation of a stick figure in my flash project,
    then decided that I wanted to make it a symbol. Is there some way
    to make the animation/set of frames part of the symbol? When I
    select the layer and its frames, "convert to symbol" becomes dimmed
    (because it's a layer maybe). But other attempts have resulted in
    my just getting the original stick figure over and not the
    sequence.
    I am probably overlooking something obvious, but I can't
    figure it out!
    Thanks for any help.

    Actually it's ridiculously complicated ;-)

  • Extending animation Effect duration for longer than 60 seconds

    I need to be able to "wipe" an object into the screen over about 2.5 minutes (for example, puting an expanding timeline under a quicktime video that is playing). Microsofts Powerpoint allows effects to have any duration. Keynote, which is a better program in many ways, has a maximum effect duration of 60 seconds (why?). Is there any way to extend that maximum time?

    The only way that I know to make this work is to apply many moves to happen one after another. It would probably be easier to load the pic into iMovie, apply a Ken Burns effect and export as a Quicktime movie you could then put into Keynote.

  • Noob Question: Move a layer in the opposite direction of a different animated layer

    So say that I have an icon that I animate on the Y-axis +40px, but instead of trying to hand key the other layer each time, is there an expression I can write to have the other layer move in the opposite Y direction the same amount of units (ex: -40px)?
    Thanks!

    You have to define what the y movement is relative to. For example, if you want one layer to mirror another layer's y movement since the first frame, you could do it like this:
    p = thisComp.layer("leader").transform.position;
    value + [0,p.valueAtTime(0)[1] - p[1]]
    If you want to mirror it around a particular reference y value, it would be like this:
    yRef = 540;
    p = thisComp.layer("leader").transform.position;
    value + [0,yRef - p[1]]
    There are other variations/interpretations--it depends on what you're after exactly.

  • Animated GIF w/layers

    I saw an animated gif that had a background layer and an
    animated layer as a gif (downloaded from the web and opened it in
    FW MX 2004 mac). Is it possible to export an animated GIF from FW
    that will have this set-up? It would save a ton of space. yes, auto
    difference seems to do this, but...
    Thoughts?

    can you post a link to the gif?

  • Creating Animated Gifs in Illustrator?

    In PS if you have a layered file, you can create an animated gif via SAVE FOR WEB AND DEVICES.
    But it seems you can only create static gifs via SAVE FOR WEB AND DEVICES in Illustrator from layered files.
    Please! Say that ain't so - that I'm missing some small detail that will allow me to do this same thing from Illustrator!!!!
    Many thanks in advance!

    Thanks so much Scott,
    You break my heart! ;(
    Going via PS is tons of extra work. Uneccessary work! What happens is that for some strange reason, the layers come into PS weird. the icon for EACH layer is a folder AND a subfolder. So they have be flattened one by one and THEN turned into frames in the animation layer AND THEN saved as a gif. So what's perplexing me - is seeing the same SAVE FOR WEB AND DEVICE dialog box in Illustratore - yet it only saves static gifs.
    Is it really true that i have to go through all these extra steps? Yikes! I wonder why Adobe would do that, and yet go through all the trouble to let you export swf's. It seems so very poorly planned by Adobe that i keep hoping someone will tell me I'm missing something - and that there's a way to do this from Illustrator.
    But thank you so much for your help. I really do appreciate it.

  • Help on getTimer() function = affects the main animation...

    Layers scenarios:
    Layer 1: pics animation
    Layer 2: text animation
    Layer 3: graph animation
    Layer 4: a movieclip()
    Here's goes, inside the movieclip on Layer 4 it is nested down to bubble movieclip which inside is an actionscript that animates the premade animation for the bubble just attaching those movieclips to an empty movieclip.
    The problem goes like this when I test the movie in the first maybe 5 or 10 seconds the animation seems just fine but after several seconds the animation becomes slower in the root timeline. It seems that getTimer() affects the animation, as far as I know getTimer() function returns the time the swf file begin playing in milliseconds. The code I was working on is based on the getTimer().
    What would be the work-around with this kind of scenario? I guess theres another function that works the same as getTimer that cannot affect my main animation.
    By the way, my animation on Layer 4 which is nested movieclip is a random bubbles with total of 200 instances.
    Thanks and more power to us all!

    Okay. Here is what I came up with. I'm not sure exactly what was in your timeline animated tweens. So perhaps this isn't what you wanted at all....
    All you need is the bubble artwork (set to export as "Bubble") and this code. It is full of "magic" numbers that I just fiddled with until I thought it looked pretty on my machine.
    Some important bits are the part where when the bubble gets off the top of the screen it removes itself.
    var home:MovieClip = this;
    var counter:Number=0;
    var totalBubbles:Number=200;
    clearInterval(bubbleIntervalID);
    var bubbleIntervalID=setInterval(attachBubble,150);
    function attachBubble() {
    var curBub:MovieClip = home.attachMovie("Bubble", "bubble", 1000+counter);
    curBub.blendMode = "hardlight";
    curBub._y = Stage.height + 100;
    curBub._x = (Stage.width - 50) * Math.random() + 50;
    curBub._xscale = curBub._yscale = Math.random() * 60 + 40;
    curBub._alpha = Math.random() * 80 + 20;
    curBub.vy=-(Math.random()*5+1)
    curBub.ay=-Math.random()/30
    curBub.x0=curBub._x;
    curBub.var1=Math.random()*100;
    curBub.var2=Math.random()*300;
    curBub.factor1=Math.random()/100;
    curBub.factor2=Math.random()/200;
    curBub.onEnterFrame = floatUp;
    counter++
    if(counter>totalBubbles){
      clearInterval(bubbleIntervalID);
    function floatUp() {
    this.vy += this.ay;
    this._y += this.vy;
    this._x = this.x0+this.var1*Math.sin(this._y*this.factor1)+this.var2*Math.sin(this._y*this.factor2) ;
    if(this._y<(-this._height)){
      delete this.onEnterFrame;
      this.removeMovieClip()

  • Need help in saving an animation

    I created a simple animation in Photoshop CS3 using just two frames. I have never tried animating anything before so if this question sounds stupid, it's just because after a couple hours of exploring every how-to on how to save and export, I am coming up with nothing that works. How do I save my 2-frame animation as a gif (or for that matter, anything) so that I can retain the animation? Although I can animate my file via the animation layer, when I save it as a gif, I get one flat saved image. Help. How do you save animations???????
    Thanks,
    Maria

    It took a couple hours of research (!!!!!) but despite what every forum says, my animated gif could not be previewed in any browser. It always opened up as one unanimated image. I ended up uploading the saved gif to Photobucket and then copied the html link code into my blog post. I guess there is no way to preview a gif, you just have to trust it will work when you upload it to whatever.  I wish I had known that. :-/
    Thanks for responding to my question though!!!! :-)

  • Alpha layer on V2 creates banding in the still image of V1

    I have about seventy-five shots with a still image background and an animated object above it (on video track 2). The alpha type is set correctly (black), but for some reason the background has color banding on any spot where the V2 alpha layer exists. It's critical that we correct this distortion, so if anyone has any ideas they'd be much appreciated!
    The animated layer is a combination of a Photoshop PNG and a shape created in Motion. The animation was all done in Motion as well. Unfortunately, using the still image is a background in Motion to begin with is NOT an option, but to explain why would take another four or five paragraphs (this is a complicated and long-running project!).
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks for the help. I will try rendering it in 10-bit.
    About rendering it in Motion. . . well, that actually does not create the banding, but due to what some experts suspect is deep-seated problem with our OS X or Final Cut Studio installation, it does other things with the image which are unacceptable for our output.
    Scratch that! Thanks so much! Rendering in high-precision YUV fixed our problem! (With the color banding, I mean.) We've got a nearly seven hour DVD set going out nationwide soon and you just made this one of our briefest and easiest problems to overcome.
    I thought I had tried every combination of rendering but with so many variables, I guess that one slipped through.

  • Help on adding an animation on to a live video =0]

    Noob here lol
    would anyone be so kind as to help guide me towards some instructional video, forum or link that will show me how create a video with a specific cartoon character onto a live recorded video like these here>>> Zangief makes Russia proud! Street Troller / Street Fighter Parody - YouTube
    thats pretty much what I would like to do nothing else really
    thanks for any help

    The example is nothing more than an animated layer added on top of the video. If you already know the basics what are you specifically having problems with?

  • Feather a shape layer

    This has to be possible. Right?
    I am trying to create a mask for an animated layer. The animated layer is increasing in scale while changing its position to move off the bottom of the composition. I can create a perfect MASK for that layer, but it moves with the layer. If I could lock the mask, that would be great.
    So, instead, I am trying to create a TRACK MATTE. The problem is, I can create the right ellipse to MATTE the animating layer underneath. But, I can't soften it's edges. I've tried adding a glow effect, but it's not enough.
    I know this is simple. I've spent 45 minutes trying to do it myself and looking for similar questions/posts... but nothing has helped.

    Feathering in Illustrator just adds a blur that's limited to the boundary of the layer. It also is a raster effect. That means if you bring the an Illustrator layer into AE and push in and expect it to behave like a vector with CR turned on, it won't because Feather changes the layer from a vector to a bitmap.
    If you really need a shape layer and you want a fully controllable feathered edge just create a rectangle shape layer, add a mask to the shape layer, then use the Mask Feather tool to control the feathering. You'll end up with far more control than you can get in Illustrator or with a blur, and the layer will still continuously rasterize.

  • Reveal Image as one Layer

    Hi,
    I have a project that has a radial animation of a circle with nice smoothing at the start. Now instead of the white fill i want to reveal an image instead at the width of the stroke.
    I can make an alpha reveal by positioning the image (here red solid as placeholder) below the radial animation layer, but ... is there also a way to just add an effect to the image that'd do the same ? So I don't need to use 2 layers ?

    Frank

    No. Simply pre-compose.

  • Swivel/Hanging text animation?

    So I didn't find a thread related to this but i'm trying to accomplish a specific animation for my video which is where it's just Text BUT a letter loses integrity and ends up hanging from its bottom axis left and right similar to something bolted to the wall but a part of it has a broken screw which makes it look as such . It ends up just swiveling left and right to elaborate significance of what i'm trying to convey, how do I go about achieving this? I'm pretty sure its simple I just can't find a detailed how to on it even in these forums

    Nothing magic here. Put the letter you want to move on a separate layer, move the anchor point to the point where you want the rotation to center and animate rotation. Making it look organic is a matter of timing and keyframe interpretation. You can use an expression to simulate the pendulum motion.
    Dan Ebberts Pendulum Expression with an explanation.
    veloc = 7;
    amplitude = 80;
    decay = .7;
    amplitude*Math.sin(veloc*time)/Math.exp(decay*time)
    This expression would have to be modified to delay the start of the motion and make the layer end up up side down or a null could be added to rotate the layer upside down.
    Here is Dan Ebbert's in depth discussion on the bounce and overshoot problems you are trying to solve:
    Realistic Bounce and Overshoot
    Probably the easiest solution would be to duplicate your text layer, apply a couple of keyframes to rotate the letter upside down and then add the expression to the dupe then pre-compose the layer animated layer and move it down the time line to the point where you want the letter to fall and make a cut between the copied text layer. It would look like this:
