Pulseaudio and multiple X11 sessions

I wanted to create a second X11 server for a game that I can't tab out of.  I'm using gnome-shell.  Pulseaudio only plays audio when on display :0, anyway for it to play audio no matter what term/display you are on?
Thanks

Oh, right in the face. I have wasted so much time, trying to get pulseaudio even close to outputting sound from different users over different X sessions at the same time. This gets gradually worse, the closer you come to trying to pull that off over HDMI.
You should read this explanation: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/p … 12094.html
It will tell you, how your use case is too uncommon to be within the scope of PA. It will tell you, how annoying it would be, if more than one user could output sound at the same time and how wrong people are, when they misinterpret the term "multi-user". I could, but will not, rage all night about how people really think, audio and video can be compared in a meaningful way. *makes weird noises*
However, reading the post, you will notice, that the guy talks about running pulseaudio system-wide. This should be your query on your favorite crawler. I have stopped using PA, because it brought more abstraction for no effects.

  • Missing session variables and multiple CFID/CFTOKEN

    We are using ColdFusion 9.0.1 and have recently started to experience some sporadic behavior in our applications. These applications have worked without error for over 6+ years and have not been modified during this time.
    Over the past couple of weeks, we have been receiving calls in regards to users not being able to login and receiving errors when performing various actions.  We have put troubleshooting measures in place that display values when this occurs.
    We have noticed that when the errors occur, there are multiple CFID/CFTOKEN COOKIE values. Additionally, session variables are being dropped (during simple tasks such as going from one screen to the next).  These errors do not occur for the majority of users and have primarily occurred in Internet Explorer, but we have had some instances in other browsers.  In most instances, if the user switches browsers, the same application works fine for them.
    In one particular case, we have a <cfif> tag in the application.cfm file that checks for “session.user_id”.  If it doesn’t exist, the user is directed to a login page using the <cflocation> tag. When experiencing the problem, users are continuously going back to the login screen because the system is saying that the session variable does not exist.
    When working with one user who was experiencing this problem, we were able to remedy the problem by adding “addtoken=’yes’” to the cflocation tag.  ** We do not prefer to do this for security reasons.
    Rather than go through each application and try to “band-aid” each instance that occurs, can anybody offer some suggestions on why this behavior recently began and how we may be able to globally address it?

    My immediate guess is that there is faulty logic in the code that updates the value of session.user_id. Apparently, one of the following scenarios might be happening.
    Coldfusion creates a session, X, say. Session.user_id is as yet undefined, so ColdFusion cflocates the user to the login page. The user logs in, still within session X. His session.user_id is set.
    Suppose, for whatever reason (and I know of at least two), the session drops. The user's very next request will make ColdFusion to create a new session, Y, say. Under session Y, the variable session.user_id, which corresponded to session X, will no longer exist. So ColdFusion cflocates the user to the login page. This cycle will of course repeat if left uncorrected.
    Another possible scenario is that the variable session.user_id is not set at all, or is set in the context of a new session. I am assuming that the login page is a form. Then login validation occurs at the action page of the form. Presumably the variable session.user_id is set at this action page. If so, then perhaps ColdFusion fails to set this variable, or a new session is created as the request goes from the login-form page to the action page.
    The 2 main reasons why a session drops are 1) it times out, 2) a new request starts a new session. Hence the following suggestions.
    1) Is your sessionTimeout value low, say, just a few minutes? If so, increase it to 20 minutes.
    2) Remember that the default behaviour of ColdFusion is to start a new session at every request. Use cflogin and cfloginuser together with loginStorage="session". Cflogin executes only if there is no logged in user, irrespective of the session. Therefore, getAuthUser() is a better authentication test than session.user_id.
    3) Use Application.cfc in place of Application.cfm. In particular, the CFC offers you more fine-grained control over the beginning and end of sessions.

  • X11 and multiple users?

    With multiple accounts on an iMac G5, and 10.5.1; is there a way the multiple users can utilize x11.
    An example, one user has started x11 for Open Office. The first user logs off.
    Later, a second user logs on their account and attempts an application, that requires x11. The application will not start because x11 cannot start for that user. This appears to be true until the first user logs back on and 'quits' x11.
    Is this normal?

    IIRC, you can't do that and have to terminate X11 or disable FUS. Start with http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8699.htm and the links it points to.

  • Using Start-Job to launch multiple SSH sessions and esxtop?

    Hello folks,
    I am trying to start an esxtop session on multiple esx servers at the same time.
    I started trying using Start-Job thinking it would help do it asynchronously.
    The script I have below works on one host so far, but need suggestions to repeat it for multiple hosts, thinking by looping through changing the $i each time?
    Checking if anyone would have comment?
    $i = 1
    $seconds = 5
    $iterations = 2
    $esxtopfile = "esxtop$i_$((Get-Date).ToString('MMddyyy-hhmm')).csv"

    Start-Job  -ScriptBlock $sb -ArgumentList $ComputerName,$seconds,$iterations,$esxtopfile | Wait-Job | Receive-Job

A: Using Start-Job to launch multiple SSH sessions and esxtop?

You're starting for a job, waiting for that job to complete and then finally receiving that job
before allowing anything else to happen with your script.
In other words, if you had some code after the Start-Job line, it would not be executed until the job had completed and you had received the job, which partially negates the benefits of using a job to begin with (specially bearing in mind you don't have
a form).
The way to achieve what you're after is to start all jobs at the same time, one per ESX host, and then finally to wait for all jobs and collect all jobs at the end.
Here's a quick example that starts 5 jobs and wait for all of them to complete before receiving the results.
$jobs = @()
$jobs += 1..5 | ForEach-Object {Start-Job -ScriptBlock {Sleep $args[0]; "I just slept for $($args[0]) seconds"} -ArgumentList $_}
[void] (Wait-Job $jobs)
Receive-Job $jobs
Notice that each of the subsequent jobs will take longer and longer to run, with the first being the fastest and the last the slowest. Still, I'm waiting for *all* jobs to complete before performing the Receive-Jobs on all of them at the same time.

  • Similar to multiple x sessions

    I know that on linux you can initiate multiple x sessions so that when you connect to the computer using VNC and use the mouse and keyboard without interfering with what the user on the computer does.
    Is there some way to start a new session on the mac and do that same thing?

    TL;DR version - not really.
    Long winded version...
    Much of the apple magic in making X11 work within the Cocoa on top of Aqua on top of Quartz/OpenGL/QuickTime stack makes this really hard to do.
    Have you looked over Xnest - it's really powerful and can act as a server and a client. If remote boxes are ssh into the mac and using the multiple displays set up under Xnest your local display would be cluttered but one mac could support many remote machines with X11 services.
    See these links for some good reading on the subject:
    [Fun with Xnest HowTo|http://box.matto.nl/xnest.html]
    [X11 for Mac OS X|http://www.scl.utah.edu/computers/mac/help/x11>
    The only time I've seen this actually deployed, xnest was ditched after a few days of pain. Instead, a beefy Mac Pro with RAM/CPU to spare was set up with VMWare fusion and a virtual machine per user with linux/freeBSD installed. Then X11 could roam there free of "the dictator" known as Quartz Compositor.

  • Fields become non-editable when forwarding X11 session to Windows in Java 7

    I have found what I believe could be a bug in Java 7, and Swing specifically. The scenario in which it occurs is pretty rare, so it's not surprising that I couldn't find anyone posting about experiencing this issue, but it's an issue that happens consistently for our product and our users.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) Download any Swing-based Java application (for instance, IntelliJ IDEA or SoapUI) on a Linux machine.
    2) SSH into this host machine from a Windows SSH client, using X11 forwarding (you can use this guide to set it up using PuTTy and Xming - http://blog.nth-design.com/2010/05/19/x11-putty-xming/ )
    3) Run the application, and make sure the application is running with JRE7.
    4) Try to edit some different text fields.
    When doing this, certain text fields that are supposed to be editable suddenly become non-editable. This issue does not occur if you repeat the above procedure with JRE6.
    If you need any further assistance in reproducing this issue, let us know.

  • Multiple Client Sessions [1 computer]

    I have been tasked with finding out whether or not it is
    feasible given Windows OS on a single computer with 1 IE browser to
    be able to start multiple sessions. Given multiple browser
    instances at the same time, can each be tracked as separate
    sessions?
    I don't know of a way, but wanted to see if anybody else did.
    Thanks in advance.

    > How are you getting separate session tokens?
    1) I click the IE icon next to the start button the task bar.
    2) I click it again to get a second blank window.
    3) I then go to the first window type
    http://localhost/test.cfm
    (test.cfm only has <cfapplication sessionmanagement="Yes"
    />
    and <cfdump var="#session#" /> in it)
    4) I note the session tokens.
    5) I then go to the second window and type
    http://localhost/test.cfm
    6) I compare the tokens and they are different.
    The key here is how I launched the second window.
    Meaning, had I created the second window using CTRL-N while
    having
    focus on the first window, the session tokens would have been
    the same.
    Also, if I click a link from the first window that pops open
    a second
    window, the session tokens would again be the same.
    OBTW, this behavior is dependent on OS/Browser combination.
    I know this is not exactly what you are looking for so
    perhaps you
    can restate the problem or condition you are concerned with?
    Good luck!

  • Multiple View sessions, same PC?

    View 6.0.1, Client 3.3.0
    Can I have multiple View sessions from the same PC? In other words
    Launch the Horizon View client, login, and access a desktop
    Launch the Horizon View client again, login as a different user, and access a different desktop
    Repeat until I have many session open at once
    The reason I ask is we are migrating from Exchange to Gmail. Google provides a utility called GAMME that in a larger environment can be run from multiple machines with each machine migrating one portion of the alphabet. Rather than using 10 physical machines I would rather use 10 View desktops. This will work slick if from my real PC I can access all 10 view desktops. I will be using a different login account to access each desktop.

    Have not tried yet. I did not want to go through the time setting up a separate non-persistent desktop pool if I could not login to more than one desktop at the same time. Now that I know it will work, I will run with it. Thanks for the help

  • Pulseaudio and systemd --user: DBus scope issues?

    Hi,
    I have a multi-seat setup, so I need user-wide pulseaudio and whatnot. I'm trying to setup my boot through systemd --user.
    Testing audio working apps are firefox, mpv, and mpd. The problem is:
    - If I start pulseaudio and mpd manually everything is fine (no use of systemd)
    - If I start pulseaudio through systemd no application has sound.
    - If I start pulseaudio and mpd through systemd only mpd has sound.
    raimundoyamtech~$ cat .config/systemd/user/pulseaudio.service
    [Unit]
    Description=PulseAudio Sound System
    After=sound.target
    [Service]
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/pulseaudio
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    raimundoyamtech~$ cat .config/systemd/user/mpd.service
    [Unit]
    Description=Music Player Daemon
    After=network.target sound.target

    ExecStop=/usr/bin/mpd %h/.config/mpd/mpd.conf --kill
    Restart=always
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    If I add BusName=org.pulseaudio.Server to the pulseaudio.service nothing changes.
    Using pulseaudio's autospawn=yes leads to what seems to be same behaviour: mpd by systemd starts pulseaudio and is the only app with sound.
    ./config/pulse/client.conf only contains default-sink. Everything else is default.
    Using alsa alone is not an option because of firefox.
    Any thoughts?

  • Multiple user sessions for ADF application

    Hi All,
    We have a ADF application with 3-4 pages starting with a login screen.
    Assume we have two users, user1 and user2. In same system but different browser windows, when both users are logging in, only user2 's session is active. Though user1 logged in first and is able to perform transactions, the moment user2 logs in, user1's session is being over-written by user2 (user1's window now displays user2's information). I have observed the URL of user1 window which now changes to user2's URL (_adf.ctrl-state parameter of user2 is displayed in user1 browser)
    How do we overcome this?? We have a requirement to be able to open multiple user sessions.
    We are using JDeveloper 11.1.2.3.0 and browsers being used are IE 8, IE9 and chrome.
    Thanks,
    Deepti

    Hi,
    Continuation to my above question
    I am using these two statements in my code..
    ExternalContext ectx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().getExternalContext();
    HttpSession httpSession = (HttpSession)ectx.getSession(true);
    On any event in Window1, I gues it is getting the context and session of window2(this being the latest)..
    Shouldnt it return the context and session of the current window instead of the latest window???
    This problem is well explained here
    internet explorer 8 - How to avoid session sharing provided by IE8 programmatically in Java EE application? - Stack Over…
    I want to know.. what is the best way to handle this in ADF... We are using managed beans with request scope and using HttpSession to store few values like user Id.

  • Multiple server sessions

    Hi,
    Should there be any issue mixing objects between multiple server sessions.
    We have multiple services that each have each have their own ServerSession.
    There are situations where objects retrieved through one ServerSession are ultimately part of an object that is persisted through another ServerSession.
    Note: communication between client and services is via RMI and persistence is performed using the mergeWithReferences method.
    Example,
    - Person object has an Address object.
    - Address is retrieved from ServerSession 1 (RMI)
    - Person object is retrieved from ServerSession 2 (RMI)
    - Address is added to Person and Person is persisted
    thru ServerSession 2. (RMI)
    The behavior I've observed is inconsistent but ultimately there seems to be problems.
    From the example above, occasionally ServerSession2 will attempt to reinsert the Address object into the table.
    In the case where Address is read only the cached version of Person in ServerSession2 will have a null Address attribute after persistence even though the database was updated correctly.
    What accounts for this behavior?
    Thanks
    Mark

    Marc,
    The problem you are seing is related to TopLink's existence checking. When you go to write an object from session 1 into session2 and it does not exist in the cache TopLink assumes the object is new. This is very similar to when you are running in a cluster and your write request ends up in a JVM where the TopLink session has not read in the object you plan to write.
    In order to make this work you can change the existence-checking setting, which I don't recommend, or you can alter your pattern for dealing with the UnitOfWork.
    When you serialize the object(s) across RMI to the server that is going to do your writing I recommend the following pattern:
    1. Acquire UnitOfWork from session
    2. Read objects from database
    unitOfWork.read(person);
    unitOfWork.read(address);
    3. Merge objects (unitOfWork merge APIs)
    4. Commit UnitOfWork
    Step #2 is important here. If you are writing to a session that has the objects cached then no database call is required. If not, the database version will be read in. The merge will copy the values over to the working copy and the commit will calculate and write any necessary changes.
    Other recent threads in this forum and the documentation detail the merge options.

  • Record multiple, simultaneous sessions through one webinar meeting room

    Is there a way to record multiple, simultaneous sessions through one webinar meeting room? I know breakout rooms can't be recorded, but is there another way to have users join a main webinar room, select a sub-room/session they're interested in, and then join that sub-session? We want to have four sessions happening at once and allow users to choose which they want to participate in. We'd also like to record the sessions. Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Use PPT, or a tool of your choice, to create a slide/object with links to each room. Then the user can click between the rooms as desired.
    You may want to use the ?launcher=false command at the end of the URLs to keep the individuals from having the add-in launched multiple times and in multiple rooms at the same time. This will keep the meetings in the individual's browser.

If I launch the executable it works fine (whether or not the java app is running). However when I launch the Windows executable from the Java app (with Runtime.exec()) the Windows executable fails to set up an snmp session.
    This is on NT. Does anyone know if there is some hard and fast rule which prevents me from running multiple snmp sessions in this way ? ...or if it should definitely be possible (and I should look at how the snmp session is being set up in the executable).

    If the application works as an snmp agent and listens on the standard snmp agent port (UDP 161 I think) then you will only be able to run one instance of it.
    If you were to try and start a second instance it would find that port unavailable.
    Perhaps that is the problem you are encountering.
