PXI-6251 Phase Angle

Good Day,
I am currently using a PXI-6251 module and I need to measure Phase Angle between two sinusoidal waveforms. I have done a lot of searching and can not find much. If anyone is able to help I would appreciate it.
TIA,
TomJr

Hi TomJr-
I'm not sure if it will be very significant, but there will be some phase difference introduced into your sampled signals due to the fact that the input lines are MUX'd through a single PGIA and ADC.  This means that there will inherently be some skew between channels that you may want to account for.
The easiest way to accomplish this is to query the AI.Convert.Rate propery as shown below.
This value is the frequency of the clock that initiates samples from each channel in succession, so the reciprocal will represent the system-introduced phase difference in the sampled values.  If the amount of time introduced by this multiplexing is significant you might want to manually add it to the value you calculate with lrallen's suggestion.  Alternatively, you could use a simultaneously sampled S Series board to remove these effects if they are very significant in your system.
Hopefully this helps-

  • Using PXI 6251 counter to delay a trigger on PXI

    Hi at all,
I need to synchronize some devices on an PXI chassis. Basic operation is a user waveform generation on a PXI5401 that routes the Trigger Signal for the generation to one of the PXI (RTSI) lines. I'd like to use this trigger signal to start a counter on a PXI 6251 counting the PXI 10MHz Clock. No problem so far ( at least none that I see What I need is a possibilty to set another sync signal as soon as a certain counter value is reached in order to use this signal as a delayed trigger signal. Is it possible? And how? I've taken a look at the LabVIEW Example finder, but haven't found an example yet...
    Thanks!
    Oli
    P.S. Using LabVIEW 7.1.1, NIDAQ7.4 and a PXI 1042 via MXI4
Programming languages don't create bad code, programmers create bad code....

    Nathan,
Thanks for your excellent solution. I'm ordering the Aux100 cable (9-Pin DIN to two BNC Female) to export the trigger signal from the PXI to the Device_2. I will test the program (Echo_Mode_PXI_5122.vi) to be sure it will be suitable for my application.
Another problem, when my system is working on ultrasound Pulse-echo mode (Pulse_Echo_Mode_PXI_5122.vi), the input trigger must be set a delayed trigger acquisition (by setting the trigger delay to, for example 3µs) to remove the signal of power source. Could you please tell me how I can configure the digitizer in this case?
    Regards,
    John C.

  • Time Controlled digital line PXI-6251

    Hi,
I need to create a time controlled boolean.
For example a digital line is set to False. I'd like to change to True status for a certain amount of time (e.g. 150ms).
Is it possible with PXI 6251?
    Thanks

    Hi,
yes you can. Set a buffered digital output task like "Digital - Finit Output.vi" example.
You can use an external clock, generate it throught counter output or use ananog in/out sample clock.

  • Measuring phase angle

    Hello,
I require some help with a phase angle measurement.
The circuit I have to measure is attached. I would like to measure the current and phase angle through R3 and C1.
I believe that if I use a wattmeter and measure across them (R3 and C1) then cos^-1 the power factor, I will only get the angle associated with their impedance. (about -37 degrees). I want the angle of current relating to the original voltage not just the shift resulting from that branch.
Can any one recommend a device/ method of connecting to achieve the results I am looking for.
    Best regards,
    Dan

I calculated either 98.97 degrees or -82.87 depending on whether I used a thevenin or super position analysis. I believe the 98.97 degrees is to be taken from the 180 degree point, thus making them them as good as same answer. (Can't go more than 90 degrees anyway so it can't be taken from 0).
I found an interesting result from playing around with the measurement probes you suggested, whereby I was receivng two readings in the load branch from seperate measurement probes, each referenced to a different supply. The readings were 120 degrees and -60.1 degrees.
Now the combined thevenin and load impedance is -20.93 degrees.
    120 - 20.93 = 99.07
    -60.1 - 20 = -80.1
Meaningful results? I don't know, I do not have enough understanding of the subject to prove or dissprove it.
Any way its still not what i was looking for because Ive had to use my calculations which is what I'm trying to prove in the first place.
If your interested ive attached the circuit and my calculations. As you can probaly tell its part of an assignment, for my HNC. I handed it in yesterday and just had to explain why i couldn't prove the angle (not that we were expected to). I credited you, Lacy, for the measurement probe idea.
    Best regards,
    Dan

  • NI PXI 6251 strange behaviour

    Hi,
I have couple of questiobns about NI PXI 6251 in PXI-1045(with pxi-8360 Mxi-express controller).
First it works with some huge delays when Daq_mx_stop is called or even the vi is stopped by RED button
Second The reference trigger is not working for me...
When the simple start trigger is set anf APFI0 is used everythzing works fine (except previously described lond delay)
But if I set reference trigger it do not react on the triger pulse.
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
Unfortunately the problem is not solved.
This behaviour is observed not only in my .vi but also in NI MAX when I create a task there.
If I use start trigger option acqusition works with external trigger, but DAQ-assistent shows me a warning: 200010 (not all points are acquired or generetaed )
Long delay before the task finishing occures here as well.
If I try to config reference trigger for the same input (APFI0) with the same parmeters it also reacts on a trigger but no data is read and DAQ-assistent shows me an error: -200281.
Also a long (~15sec) delay is observed before the task in NI MAX is finished comletely.
In attachment I've add an example where I have all these troubles but it is nothing else as very basic read example I have the same problems also in standart example from NI library.
    Thanks in advance.

  • NI PXI 6251 SPI emulation

    Hi,
I'd like to use NI PXI 6251 DIO to setup and run an SPI communication using Labview2013. Is it possible, do you have any suggestion?
    Thanks!

    use the right hardware http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/202368
Of course it is possible to emulate a SPI interface but it will be "Clunky" low, speed and won't support features like "Clock-Streaching" very well.

  • Step (model) file for PXI-6251

I'm looking for a step file (model) for the PXI-6251 card.

    Hi wantacobra,
National Instruments device step files as well as 2D drawings can be found here, however it seems that the PXI-6251 module is not listed specifically. However i have found a generic 68 pin PXI module step file (here is the link) unfortunatley R&D have not currently made a step file available for that particular module.
    Kind regards,

  • Phase angle measurement using zero crossing

I am using  zero crossing to measure the phase angle between (voltage and current) which is represented as  two input in my vi  to  eventually get the power factor. But however the reading i got for the power factor remain at 1 all through no changes. I am using an SCT- 013 -000 current transformer for the current and a power transformer for the voltage 240 - 6V . below is my vi . Can anyone help me troubleshoot why my result is showing 1 for different loads  including resistive , capacitive and inductive loads .

Are you working with Nigel91 who posted a similar question in the Electrical Power Suite board?
You have the same problem that he has. For dt = 0.02 (equivalent to a 50 Hz sampling rate) you cannot measure anything about a signal with a frequency higher than 25 Hz. And you could not get meaningful phase information at frequencies above a few hertz.
To get good phase information at typical power line frequencies sampling rates of 1000-1200 Hz or higher should be used.

  • How do I generate two finite pulse trains using counters on PXI-6251

I'm trying to use Counter 0 and Counter 1 on the PXI-6251 to generate two finite pulse trains.  But, I get this error:   "The specified resource is reserved. The operation could not be completed as specified."  See attached example.
Inside the disabled box is what I'd like to run on both counters.  I stripped things down to creating the task, starting, and stopping.  I then started to add things to see what my problem was.  The timing VI seems to be what causes me issues but I don't know why.
My end objective is two identical pulse trains with one delayed by 5us, which I figured would be easy to do in the initial delay.  I tried both in a single task and as separate tasks with no avail.

    Hi SirMutt,
Creating a finite pulse train requires
two counters. What’s really happening is that one counter is creating a
continuous pulse train while the other counter applies a finite pulse to “window”
    the pulse.
What you want to do is correlated DIO. I’ve
done a search on our website for “correlated DIO” and have come up with a few
resources. Hopefully that will help you get started.

  • Changing phase angle

    Hi all,
I have recorded a same signal several times for two minutes and trying to perform the spectral analysis. If I take any two data samples, as far as the waveform is concerned the wave is very similar to each other for both the samples as can bee seen from attached screenshot (waveform). Same is true for amplitude spectrum. But when it comes to phase spectrum the data between different samples is not same as can be seen for a frequency of 2150 in the screenshot attached.
Why is there the difference in phase spectrum only for different data samples while waveform and amplitude spectrum is same which the case should be since the same signal is recorded at different intervals???????
    Anxiously waiting for the response.
    Thanks and best regards,
    Haroon

Don't appologize for being ignorant or unexperienced!  your learning
and asking questions!  I grew up as an electronics technician and have
worked in electronics every day for over 25 years (I'm getting old) and I
STILL learn new stuff every day!
OK so you have a few
    misconceptions:
    1) MYTH: the power company provides a
stable regulated voltage and frequency with no distortions.  REALITY:
the power company has no interest in providing a stable pure 50 Hz. (in
fact, it would be nearly impossible) They do attempt to regulate
frequency and voltage to 48-52Hz at 220 - 240 VAC but, surges, spikes and
failures occur often.  Additionally, few -if any- line powered devices fail to work properly if the power source is within 10% of "ideal".
2)MYTH: the Fluke i200s current clamp introduces 0 phase distortion.  REALITY: The phase distortion is unspecified in the literature (Follow the link.)  while the clamp is "usable" up to 10KHz if you used controlled sources and graphed out the accuracy in amplitude, and spectral purity vs input frequency you'ld see an interesting curve with several non-linear components.
3)MYTH: there is no "noise" on the line.  REALITY: TV, Radio, Local radar systems, cell phones and microwave relay towers all broadcast RF that can induce currents on the transmission and distrubution lines (not to mention solar events).  Additionally PLC technologies actually intentionally introduce modulation of the line frequency.
so in conclusion: I'm not sure there should be any spectral relationship between random samples of line currents from a residential or comercial power provider near 2KHz.  I would suggest you limit your experiment to the first 3-5 harmonics as there seems to be no rationale to compare the phase relations way outside of the 50hz that is of interest.
Perhaps you do need to gain information about these higher freq components.  If so you will need some type of AC-AC converter with much tighter regulation than the power company provides.

  • SCR Phase Angle control

    Hi All,
I'm trying to produce a chopped sine wave to simulate an SCR controlling
    mains voltage. The output
only needs to be a few volts with an positive offset.
I've thought of making a table of normalized values to represent the fixed
    frequency sine wave(50Hz)
and to switch the output to a fixed level(offset) below a certain output
value. That way I can control
the trigger angle. Of course the trigger is reset when passing through the
    offset value.
I'm I on the right track here or is there an easier way with a prebuilt VM?
    TIA for you help
    Nick

    Greetings Nick:
You should be able to get good results with your technique. (You're essentially doing a poor-man's
Direct Digital Sythesis, when reading a pre-constructed table like you are doing) Another way to do this is generate a sine wave, using one of the sine generator vi's and then run it through a series of comparators (use comparison primitive) each with a different threshold. Add the values of each comparator output, and voila, this is your stepped wave. In this manner, you are simulating a "flash" A/D convertor.
Another way to do this, is to run a square wave generator (say at 400Hz) and MULTIPLY this by a sine wave at 50 Hz. This will give you a Sine wave modulated square wave, (or vice versa, since mathematically, they are identical!)

  • I have a trouble reading signal from PXI-6251

When I want to capture data coming from a loadcell, it shows a graph which has maximum value of 10.5v and the real value is at the minimum. This happens frequently and the graph jumps from real value to 10.5v and then back again to real value. A sample screenshot is shown below, can anybody tell me what is the problem. Also it should be noted that DAQ and board have already been checked with another setup and they work very well so I'm pretty sure that the problem is on developer side!
    Regards,

Are you performing any processing on your data?  Are you performing a continuous or finite acquisition?  Do you see this behavior in the Test Panel as well?  How is your load cell wired?  Typically load cells need external excitation.  If this is the case for your load cell, what is providing the excitation?  If this is a bridge-based sensor, then this document would be good to review.  Hopefully this helps!

  • What equipment is required to calibrate PXI cards.

I need to know what all is required, hardware and software wise, for me to calibrate the following NI items in my cal lab:
    PXI-1045, PXI-6508, PXI-6552, PXI-8331, and PXI 6251.
What I have now is an old version 2.0 of Calibration Executive and the software that came with these cards (NI-488.2, GPIB-VXI/C Legacy Documentation and NI-VISA Libraries Version 3.0). My software guy also has the NI Developer Suite from 2003. In the lab we have calibrators (5700,5720,4708,9500) and meters (34401,3458,1281,8508) and scopes (TDS) and PC controllers running XP with NI PCI-GPIB cards.
I realize I will need to get an upgrade for the Cal Exec, I need to know what all else is required to decide if it is going to be justifiable to gear up for this capability. Any information, including prices, is appreciated.

    Hi Poornima -
The SCXI chassis and equipment are used to condition signals sent to and from the DUT.  After being conditioned, the signals are sent to your DAQ device to be digitized and read into the computer.  As such, the SCXI chassis only needs to be cabled to the DAQ device.  You can do this using a shielded E-series cable (SH68-68-EP) and an adapter block (SCXI-1349).  These will connect the leftmost device in your SCXI chassis to your DAQ card, which must reside in the rightmost slot of your PXI chassis.  There is detailed information about SCXI connections in the "SCXI Quick Start Guide", which can be found in the Start Menu documentation for DAQ.
The GPIB connections will be made in your PXI chassis.  Either the embedded controller of the chassis or a PXI-GPIB card will have the port connections needed.
There are also detailed text instructions for making the connections in the "Calibration Executive Help" file, which you can find in the program's Start menu group.  Inside this file, browse the tree to "Device Calibration Procedures » Modular Instruments » High-Speed Digital".  The instructions given here explain step-by-step how to connect your equipment for both scenarios (combo chassis and separate SCXI chassis).

  • How to acquire correctly three-phase signals (Problem with the gap between signals)

    Greetings
I need to analyze three sinusoidal signals 120 degrees out of phase by nature including my version of LabVIEW 7.1 and the acquisition card I used is the Measurement Computing USB 1208FS. In principle the acquisition and display them individually does not represent any kind of inconvenience, the problem arises when I try to observe the three signals in the same waveform graph. At this point to run the test continuously (Continuously RUN) the signals lose their phase shift and this becomes variable along the process of signal acquisition occasionally taking its original phase shift (in Figure 2 shows how to vary the phase angle between the signals), just watch the same channel form using 3 distinct stages and the signal (in theory the same) is outdated fig 4. How can this problem be corrected? There is some appreciable time lag between data collection in the different channels that would alter the correct acquisition of the signals. You can correct varying the sampling frequency (rate) and the count?
Pd = vi attachment used for the acquisition
    Thanks
