QoS on the UCS Chassis

I bought a UCS chassis with two blades that are 'qualified' for Cisco Voice products (cm, ccx, etc)....     i decided to not buy the $20,000 worth of VMWARE enterprise pro licenses and the v1000 switch... since the ROI is simply not there (I'd rather have 4 separate pieces of hardware then spend that much money on software)...  anyway...   so now my questions are:
1. What QoS options are available (if any) on the uplink from the chassis to the 6120s and from the 6120s to my 4500 switch.
2.  What Qos options are available (if any) on individual hosts inside my vmware.
3. Can I buy the v1000 switch (which i believe is a few grand) and get some QoS without buying the stupid expensive vmware enterprise pro?
...or do i just return the chassis?
Thanks!

Terry,
1. UCS traffic will maintain is CoS markings on the egress of the UCS system.  It's then up to the upstream switch to honor these marking accordingly.  All CoS markings between the Chassis and FI will be honored on the IOM to prioritze traffic accoridngly in the event of congestion using PFC.  Have a read on tha attached paper about UCS & QoS, should help you get an understand on the system handling of QoS/CoS.
2. VMware 5 does offer some new auto quality of service options.  Have a read through:
What's new in vSphere 5 Networking
3.  No.  Any Distributed Switch (VMware vDS or Cisco 1000v DVS) requires the Enterprise Plus license.  This includes both the Cisco 1000v and VN-Link in Hardware (PTS with Palo M81KR adaptor).

Robert

    Terry,
UC on UCS deployment design considered the hardware features and UC software requirements
and concluded that there will be no congestion for the IP traffic until it leaves Fabric Interconnect.
So for the following traffic flow, we do not need additional QoS ( L2 COS ) configuration.
UC App > vSwitch > physical adapter > IOM > FI > upstream switch
However, if you have other virtual machines in the blade that contends for the bandwidth, then you environment might need Nexus 1000v or QoS configuration on the UCS.

  • Pro's and Con's if i run multiple host firmware packages in the single chassis

    hi
i would like to know pro's and Con's if i run multiple host firmware packages in the single chassis.
Like if my UCS is running with firmware of 1.4.1m ( having backup of 1.3.1 and 1.1.1j) with 3 blades in one chassis
can i assign  service-profiles having three different host firmware versions
    Server1 - host firmware 1.1.1j-- win2k8
    server2 -host firmware 1.4.1m -- RHEL 5.6 ( OS)
server -host firmware 1.3.1 -(esxi 4.0)
Thanks in advance ,please replay if can i go ahead with this . ASAP

Yes, you can package them together.
Now Cisco has a better way. Cisco UCS Manager provides two main advantages over past firmware provisioning:
    • The capability to group multiple firmware components together in one package
    • The capability to apply a firmware package to any compatible server in a single operation
Cisco  UCS Manager provides an accurate, easier, faster, more flexible, and  centralized solution for managing firmware across the entire hardware  stack. Service profiles in Cisco UCS Manager abstract the physical  hardware from its software properties. Service profiles allow  administrators to associate any compatible firmware with any component  of the hardware stack. Simply download the firmware versions needed from  Cisco and then, within minutes, totally provision firmware on  components within the server, fabric interconnect, and fabric extender  based on required network, server, and storage policies per application  and operating system.

  • UCS chassis PSU error

    Hi team ,
We are getting error on PSU for Cisco UCS chassis.
Its showing NA under performance & voltage tab.
We tried resetating PSU as well as removing power cable & connecting it back.
    PSU is power-on & operational.
Can anyone suggest why this issue is & how to get rid of this.

    Hi Ashish ,
It is possible that you are hitting I2C issues. I recommend to open a TAC case to have an engineer look at your environment and confirm that the I2C bus is congested.
Here are your options to clear the i2c bus:
1.You can reseat the IOMs you will need to reseat one IOM at a time starting with the IOM connected to the subordinated fabric,   This should not cause a complete outage.  However, you should perform this during a maintenance window.  Please note, this method does not always clear the i2c bus 100% of the time.  You may have to use option 2 if this is the case.
2.The second option is to power down then power back up the chassis.  This method clears the i2c bus 100% of the time.  However, the down side is it is service impacting and will need to be done during a maintenance window.

  • UCS Chassis Not Recognized

    Hello,
I am having a strange issue with a new UCS environment that we just brought online. One of the four UCS chassis had an issue with its firmware upgrade, specifically the IO module. All of the other componants on all of the other UCS chassis upgraded just fine but these two IO modules hung during the firmware upgrade. I tried to downgrade the firmware on all of the other componants to match the hung IO modules to see if they would come back online and they did not. I also moved the IO modules into a known working chassis and they worked after an auto-upgrade of the firmware! I then swapped them back to their original chassis thinking that they would be ok but they went down again, stating a communication problem and the 6140 reported them as being link-down. I restarted the entire chassis and also swapped the uplink cables and still they show offline. As a last ditch effort I deleted the entire chassis and went back to re-add it and now it will not even detect the chassis.
I know that the IO modules are fine because I can put them in another chassis and they will come up but as soon I put them back in their original chassis, the 6140's report the link as being down and it will not recognize the chassis. Does this sound like a hardware issue with the chassis itself? Any ideas?

Can you try using the cables from your "good" Chassis on the failing one?
I'd suggest you completely power down the bad chassis.  Take the cables from a good chassis, move them over, then power the bad Chassis back up.
If this doesn't work let me know.  Also ensure your Chassis discovery policy is set to 1 link for now.

  • UCS Chassis 5108 both IOMs inaccessible

    Dear forum users,
Problem description: Sometime our UCS Chassis 5108 and both IOM are suddenly INACCESSIBLE. This happens frequently (Happend 5 times in just a month)
Temporary Solution: To unplug and re-plug Chassis power cords twice, then the Chassis back to normal
Once the Chassis is inaccessible state, below are what we witness on the Chassis:
    - All the blades LEDs on chassis-1 shows amber lit
    - 8 ports on IOM A and IOM B shows NO LED lit (Not even amber lit)
    - Sudden increased in Fan speed on chassis-1
    - FI ports which connected to Chassis-1, shows NO LED it
    - Please find attached (Chassis-1_Fault.jpg) Fault message on chassis-1
    We had tried the following:
    - Tried re-sit the uplink cable
    - Tried replacing the uplink cable, the port is still down
    - Reboot FI
    - Decommission the chassis-1
    - Recommission the chassis-1
    Below is our setup environment:
    - 2x UCS 6248UP
    - 2x UCS 5108
    - 4x UCS 2208XP (2 IOM per chassis)
    - 2x UCS B200 M2
    - 5x UCS B250 M2
    - Firmware 2.0(3b)
    - Each IOM has 4 Uplink cables connect to FI
    - Chassis Discovery Policy
    1. Action (4 Links)
    2. Link Grouping Preference (Port Channel)
We hope, someone should have experience with the same problem or have some advise to be shared.
Please let me know should you need any further details of the problem or other information.
Look forward to a positive reply.

the uplink on UCS shows failed , linked down and the properties of port is trunk.
is it necessary to have the upstream switch edge port work in fastport and dot1q  mode ???

  • In what QOS does the receiver SOAP adapter work BE or EO?

    Hi,
In what QOS does the receiver SOAP adapter work BE or EO?
My guess is that it is by default EO, if so how do i make it work like synchronous?
There is no option to set it explicitly.
    Thanks]
    Shakthi

    Siva,
In receiving adapter you can't set the status. The receiving QOS is set in the pipeline by using the Sender Comm.channel QOS.
So for example in SOAP to SOAP scenario, if you set the Sender comm.channel as BE, then through out the Pipeline till it reaches the Receiver Comm.channel the QOS will be considered as BE only( Even though you didn't explicitly said to the Receiver comm.channel).
    Hope it helps!
    raj.

  • Has anyone ever successfully done a cont double buffer acq from multiple SCXI channels AND a spare AI of the MIO that controls the SCXI chassis at the same time?

I am trying do a sanity check before I order some hardware.
What I want to do is acquire from multiple channels in a SCXI chasis and as part of the same acquisition, also read from one of the "un-used" AI channels of the MIO card.
    My concern is this:
All of the channels of the SCXI chassis get multiplexed down into a single channel of the MIO card that controls the SCXI chassis. This means that channel 0 has to do multiple A/D conversions to get a reading from all of the configured SCXI channels.
Meanwhile, the other AI channel of the MIO only has to do one to get it's reading. It seems that the on-boar
d clock of the MIO would have to run at two rates to be able to read all of my SCXI channels AND the other AI channel.
    What I want to do:
I want to just configure a vitual channel for all of my SCXI channels AND one more for one "odd-ball" signal that is incompatable with all of the SCXI modules.
Then I just want to list all of my virtual channels when I configure and start my continuous double buffered acquisition.
I have successfully done all SCXI channels before, but I have never tried to use one of the un-used AI on the MIO at the same time. I have used the spare DIO lines previously, but that will not work in this app.
    So...
If you have done this and it worked, I would greatly appreciate hearing about any special techniques that were used, etc.

  • To configure a QoS for the attached topolgy

    Dear friends,
I have to configure QoS for the attached topology with the following requirements, can any one please help me to do the same.
The minimum requirements are that 4 simultaneous VoIP calls need to be supported across the backbone, as well as a dedicated 10MBs of http traffic. Of the remainder of the bandwidth ftp traffic should be given a high priority. Make sure routing protocols are given a suitable priority level.
    Thanks and expecting replies

Here are some questions that you'll need to answer, to get started.
What does the HTTP requirement mean? It is not possible to get 10 Megabytes per second on a 1.544 Megabit per second line.
What voice codec will be used on the IP Phones? This will determine how much bandwidth you need to allocate.
    Next, read the following link:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/ios/qos/configuration/guide/12_4t/qos_12_4t_book.html
It's all in there. Unfortunately, it's a big topic, so there is a lot there.

  • FWSM and CSM (Load Balance) in the same chassi

    Folks,
Is there any type of best practice (you ** must ** do like this) when you are going to implement the FWSM and the CSM modules on the same 6509 chassi ?
PS: The CSM is not doing FW loadbalance, it is doing loadbalance to servers located in a DMZ
    PATH:
(outside) FWSM (inside) -> MSFC -> (inside) PIX (dmz) -> CSM  , CSM -> (dmz) PIX (inside) -> MSFC -> (inside) FWSM
    My main doubts:
    1) FWSM using multi-context, Is there any integration problem with CSM ?
    2) FWSM and CSS in routed mode, Is there any integration problem with both modules ?
    3) Is it really necessary to operate the FWSM module in bus mode when using CSM in the same chassi (fabric switching-mode force bus) ?
    Cisco Says:
"The CSM line card operates in bus mode. When using the CSM in conjunction with the FWSM line card,
Cisco recommends forcing the FWSM to operate in bus mode using the
fabric switching-mode force bus command. When service modules such as the CSM and the FWSM
operate in bus mode, traffic from DFC-enabled line cards still use the fabric connection."
In past it was a workaround due a bug, but I have found this recommendadon and know I am a little confused.
    Tks !!!

    Luis-
You will want to used a routed mode on the CSM so that the Firewall contexts don't see eachothers MAC Addresses for any traffic not destine to to a VIP.  On the CSM VLANs, you will want to create alias IPs to use as the next hop destination between contexts for non-VIP traffic. Other than that, the CSM has no concept of contexts, so as long as the traffic is symetric when it flows through the CSM VLANs, it will be happy.

    Chris

  • Program identifies the pxi chassis

I have a utility in Lab Windows CVI 2012 that runs on a PC, PXI or PXIe. I would like the program to be able to identify which of these it is running on.
Right now we have a read of a device in the PXI chassis, just initialize a switch card, if it is successful, we have the PXI or the PXIe. My concern is if that one card is not present, also this results in a run time error if the card is not there, or if it is a PC.
I would really like something to read directly from the PXi, a serial or device number or something. Sort of like we have in our code to read the type of CAN device, first we get the CAN device number, then the device type:
/* find "can_num" for NI CAN device (just not USB) */
    Status = ncGetHardwareInfo(can_num, 1, NC_ATTR_HW_FORMFACTOR, 4, port_check);
/* use "can_num" from PCI, PXI, or PCMCIA Device to get port number */
    Status = ncGetHardwareInfo(can_num, 1, NC_ATTR_INTERFACE_NUM, 4, port_check);
Is there any such function to read the PXI chassis?

    Hi Ken-this-...,
I think what you want is DAQmxGetDeviceAttribute().  Here is a link to a similar post:
