Qttask.exe grabbing all the CPU

When I have QuickTime installed (I've had to uninstall it)95 - 99% of CPU is grabbed by qttask.exe rendering my machine incapable of doing anything else.
Any solutions out there. I saw one suggestion about running in safe mode, but that's somewhat limiting isn't it?

Hmmmm. This isn't exactly a fix, but it might do as a workaround. The procedure will involve a restart of the PC.
Install QuickTime, but don't launch it.
Go "Start > Run", type MSCONFIG and hit enter.
Go to the Startup tab in MSCONFIG and find qttask. Uncheck the box next to it. OK the changes.
When the PC reboots, qttask.exe won't run on startup. (And if it isn't running, it's not running at 100% CPU.)
Do QuickTime and the PC coexist a bit more happily with qttask.exe disabled?

  • BTHelpbrowser.exe completely grabs all the CPU and...

When my computer slows or nearly stops - I start Windows Task Manager and see that the process BTHelpbrowser.exe is taking 99%of my CPU and 44,095K of my memory ...WHY ????
I have tried deleting the process - but that doesn't seem to work - the only way is to re-boot ! AAARGHHH !
I can't find anywhere on the BT help website where I can post this question - so it's over to 'the community' to help..Please.

    Hi Guys
There have been a number of improvements made to our Desktop Help, for instance we now use the Windows OS wireless manager, and we also now use Internet Explorer as our browser with the option of a BT Yahoo toolbar. This does work with windows XP, Vista and Win7 32 bit version. Approximately 2 million people have Desk Top Help installed and it has helped fix a huge number of issues so I think it’s a great piece of kit and well worth an install.
    @Evenly
What version of Desk Top Help do you have?
If you’re not quite sure, the best thing to do is remove what you have at the moment with the following instructions:
    1. First make sure old Desktop Help is uninstalled (start All Programs->BT Broadband Desktop Help->Uninstall)…check add/remove programs too for any sign.
    2. In task manager if you see the following – remove it:
    a) BTHelpNotifier.exe
    b) McciTrayApp.exe
    c) McciServiceHost.exe
    3. If you see McciCMService.exe please stop it in services (control Panel ->Administrative Tools->Services)
    4. In registry delete the following hives (to start regedit do  Start->Run->Regedit):
    - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Motive
    - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Motive
    Restart the PC
You can then download the latest version of Desktop Help and install it from here
Let us know how you get on.
    Thanks,

  • Why can't I make Lightroom use all the CPU-Power (all cores) available for generating Previews?

    Dear Lightroom Team,
I've been a Lightroom user since the very first Beta, and I am truly happy with the work you deliver. It changed my way of editing forever, and you guys keep improving it.
Yet there is that one question that bothers me, and that i'm looking for an answer for.
My Workflow has the generate Previews checkbox checked by standard. I usually import between 150 and 2000 photos at once, on occaions it can be up to 5000 photos. Generating Previews always takes a significant amount of time, and Lightroom is only using 25% of my CPU Power while doing so. (using a MacBook Pro 8,2)
I understand the concept, that only using 25% CPU enables me to use the computer while waiting for the Previews. But most of the time I just grab myself a cup of coffee, do the dishes or other stuff, while waiting for the Previews. Usually I rund out of things to do, because it takes ages to Process all the photos. So I would really love to make Lightroom use ALL the cpu power possible.
I'm sure you guys have spent a lot of thoughts while coding this and have a very good answer handy. Looking forward reading it!
    all the best,
    Wolfgang

On my four-year old Windows 7 i7-860 system LR4.4.1 takes ~0.5 sec. per Canon 5D MKII 21Mp raw image to render 'Standard-Sized' previews with LR Catalog Settings 'Standard Preview Size' set to '2048' pixels. I consider that pretty fast!
I usually build 1:1 full-size previews on import, which takes ~5.0 sec. per image. Processor utilization varies between 15-50% for Standard-Sized previews and 15-65% for 1:1 previews. I consider this pretty slow, but it doesn't stop me from working on the images inside LR's Library and Develop modules.
I wait until 'Copy and import photos' has completed and can see Preview Building has started. LR doesn't slow-down much even with the 1:1 preview building going on in the background. Have you tried working in LR during the preview building (i.e. sorting,  rating, keywording, and Develop adjustments)?

    Hi!
The system is Windows 7 Home Profession. I installed iCloud application for PC for photostream sync with iPhone 4. The photostream sync is well. But "applephotostreams.exe" constantly uses the CPU to 50%. Whatever you sync or not.
    Help please.

My APSdaemon.exe issue coincided with the same issue from the AppleMobileDeviceService.exe process.
The problem for me was not resolved by iTunes or iCloud uninstall/install (iCloud uninstall or even logoff at a PC is risky for your Outlook data by the way).
    The solution was:
    - OPEN Command Promt with Administrator’s privileges and
    - run:
    netsh winsock reset
    then
    - reboot Windows.

  • CF8 - jrunsvc.exe is pegging the cpu

    Hello,
I had upgraded to Coldfusion 8 a while ago and everything was
working fine. Then yesterday morning the jrunsvc.exe process
started pegging the cpu at 99%, really slowing down the machine. I
tried restarting the machine and ColdFusion, with no results.
There's no messages or errors in the CF log files.
I did change the debug settings to allow line debugging and
for robust debugging at that time. I was able to stop the
jrunsvc.exe without stopping jrun.exe and log back into the
administrator to change the settings back. After doing this and
restarting ColdFusion, jrunsvc.exe is still pegged at 99%. For what
I'm doing, CF seems to run fine without the jrunsvc.exe, but it
still should probably be fixed, it's a pain to restart and I don't
know what other repurcusions it might have.
My system is Windows 2003 with IIS 6 and ColdFusion 8 with
    jdk 1.6 update 4.
    Thanks for any help,
    Jim

FYI - I never figured out why jrunsvc.exe was maxing out the
    cpu.
I ended up uninstalling ColdFusion 8. I had to do this
manually as the uninstaller did not work, deleting all the
directories and the registry entries. I then reinstalled and
everything seems to be fine again. I just have to cross my fingers
and hope it doesn't happen again.

  • Safari takes up all the cpu..why?????

I'v got like 10 tabs open in my safari and it takes up about 98% of my cpu so the battery gets really hot. Even if I cut it down to 2 tabs it will still require almost all of cpu...
could anyone help me to solve this problem?
    thanks alot!

Not to be argumentative but just because it's well-known that Safari likes to hog the cpu doesn't mean that it's not a problem to be solved. I can solve the problem by NOT using Safari, but I'd prefer to use it because I like Safari better than the alternatives except for the problem with cpu usage.
This is a problem that needs to be fixed. I've tried lots of great suggestions that I've read about in this forum, but none of them have a lasting effect. The best that I can come up with is to restart Safari every once in a while -- not a solution, but it allows me to use the app for some time before it starts to hog the cpu again.

  • Version 6 and 7 hangs for 10 to 20 seconds and grabs all of CPU process

Using either version 6 or 7 on OSX 10.6.8 the browser will randomly 'hang' for ten to twenty seconds and become unresponsive. If clicking is attempted you get the spinning beachball of death. If you check the system activity monitor, it can be seen that Firefox is taking up to 100% of the processor time dring this hang. It also says that 'Firefox is not responding'.
After the hang everything goes back to normal.
This is annoying beyond the call of duty. I have started to use Safari and Chrome due to this hanging.
In fact it has just happened while I have been typing this and tried to use the text window scroll bar!
I have gone back to version 6 and it still happens.

  • Ical Helper grabbing all CPU

After a migration from a MacBook with Mac OS Lion to a new MacBook Pro, iCal Helper is grabbing almost all the cpu. IF , making the use of the computer nearly impossible. After I quit iCal Helper through Activity Monitor, the system works fine.
So far I haven't been able to locate what is wrong with iCal Helper.
Can anyone help solve this issue ?

    Problem:
Your Mac's clock was set to a date in the 1960s or 1970s after a power failure. After setting your clock to the correct date and time, the iCal alarm window popped up, empty, thrashing your hard drive and causing 100% processor load.
You may have forced quit iCal Helper, but it popped up again after a while. You may have tried to let the helper app do its thing, but after several hours it just crashed. You may have googled the problem and erased several plist and cache files or exported/re-imported/re-synched your calendars to no avail. You are now left with the option of an archive & install.
    Explanation:
After setting the correct date again, iCal/iCal Helper have forgotten that you dismissed all of your past alarms, possibly reaching back to 2003 or earlier. They now try to bring them up all at once in the iCal alarm window. This may take a long time and use a lot of memory.
    Solution:
If all alarms show up eventually, you're lucky. Dismiss them all at once by clicking the red close button. You're done.
If iCal Helper crashes after a long time without showing your alarms, you have no chance to dismiss them. iCal Helper's RAM usage climbed over a certain value (maybe 4 GB), which is not allowed, and the app crashed. You will now have to dismiss the alarms in smaller chunks: Close all applications except System Preferences. Set back your system date to 2003 (or the earliest year you started to use iCal). Switch to another tab in the preferences pane to save your date. The iCal alarm window will pop up after a while (be patient) and show only alarms before your system date and time (again, be patient). Dismiss the alarms with the red close button. Then set your system date forward one year. Etc. If you have lots of alarms, you may have to do this by quarters or whatever is appropriate to not bring iCal Helper > 4GB RAM usage. When you're done, don't forget to set your clock to the correct date and time.
    Prevention:
The problem is user based. After a power failure, log in to OS X with a different admin user account. Set the date and time straight. The log in to your normal account. This way, iCal won't ever notice the date changed temporarily.

  • Numerous TNSPING.EXE processes in the background.

    Hi,
Recently I've met a weird problem in one of my dev machines:
Numerous TNSPING.EXE processes are seen in Window Task Manager, each of which has a memory usage of around 10M or 14M, consuming up more than 1G memory in total. Besides, two oracle.exe instances is consuming all the CPU, and I cannot connect to any of the databases hosted on the machine (No response for long time, no time out) There are also a few perl.exe, cmd.exe running too, don't know whether they are related to the problem. After restarting the machine, it come back to normal, but after one or two days the machine is up, these processes show up again...
This is a screenshot of the process manager:
The machine is installed Oracle 10g, hosting 4 databases. Does someone has any clue of what's going on?
    Thanks

I didn't see this problem for a few days but this morning it comes again. I did a screenshot of the process explorer:
It looks some sub process of nmesrvc.exe is responsible for starting these TNSPING. Beside the three appeared in the screenshot, there're more than ten instances of "TNSPING.exe" running, but have no parent processes.
As a comparison, following is a screenshot of the processes when everything is normal:

  • Limit the CPU usage of applications to keep OS functional ?

    Hello,
I would first like to say that I am not knowledgeable in programming or in computer science vocabulary. So I will say things as I think they are, sorry about that.
    My problem is:
When using any applications, there is always a moment where the application will freeze the computer.
In my understanding, it is because all the CPU is directed towards this application.
So the simple solution that comes with this thinking is: if I limit the CPU an application can use, then I can keep my finder working even if the application crashes.
I understand that I might totally be off-track and in that case, I would love to hear an explanation on how it really works.
    Thank you !

Good stuff guys. I guess what I was not considering is that if any archived logs are overwritten, it makes recovery from the last full backup perilous. Here are some more facts about the DB that may help determining the best solution:
All raster content is stored in a raster tablespace. We load raster content (Sat imagery, etc.) from disk or FTP delivery but we do not do any editing to it. So, once it is in Oracle it is static. So, a daily or re-occuring backup of the raster content may not make sense. It may make sense to only back up this tablespace once new loads occur. Also, the raster tablespace makes up over 95% of our DB size (~220GBs).
All other content (mainly geospatial vector information) is stored in 2 other tablespaces and this is the content that is edited routinely and this is the content I need backed up often....and it is small...no more than a few gigs.
So, what if I ran the DB in archive log mode, except for the raster tablespace, and did nightly backups on everything but the raster TS, and backed up the raster TS only when new content is loaded??? Does this seem like a good idea? and if so, what would be the best way to periodically backup a >200GBTS?
This will make redo much MUCH smaller and I can handle removing the archived logs once a backup is complete.
Thanks again. It is fun learning more about this stuff!!
    Thanks!

  • Pages 5 will not drag/drop individual pages in thumbnail view, grabs all pages!

When I try to grab a page in thumbnail view to move, it grabs all the pages in the document and I cannot move the page I want. Any ideas?
    Thanks

What happens when the page breaks mid sentence? Do you just scramble the content? Your documents would rapidly be shuffled into unintelligibility.
I just checked in Word for Mac. It doesn't let you just drag random pages out of order either.
Pages has a mode, the same as Word for Mac, Layout mode where every page is individual and can be reordered at will.
The problem in Pages 5.2 is that it doesn't have Textbox linking that lets you flow text from one place to another in a document.
Pages '09 has Textbox linking and another 110 features missing from Pages 5.2.

  • How to slow down the CPU Macbook Air?

    Dear all,
The CPU on my  Macbook Air 11-inch mid 2012 is overheating and shutting down the computer. I tried everything: smcFancontrol,  checked if there are jobs keeping the CPU busy and so on.
I live in a very hot country and there are no Apple stores here. So I guess that the only solution is to slow the MBA down.  I am not a power user and I do not mind if it runs slower (and colder). I have checked coolbook but it does not run on 1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 running OSX 10.9.5.
      Any help?
    Thank you so much!
    LMM

    Install iStat menues:
    http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/
Open Activity Monitor to ALL PROCESSES and set CPU to display values from high to low.
Post images of both when the MBA gaets hot.
Heat is usually a function of the type and number of applications being used.  The less stress is put on the CPU, the less heat will be generated.  It becomes a question if the heat is within acceptable levels or not.
    Ciao.

  • One database using most of the CPU

    HI,
On one of our SQL server, the CPU was really high. I ran a query to find out which database was using most of the CPU. We have about 30 databases on that server.
Database 1 is using 90% of the CPU
    Database 2 3.5%
    Database 3 1.5%.
    etc...
The database 1 in our Intranet and i really don't understand why it's using all the CPU available. We have just a few people connected at once.
I'd like to know if there's any way to find out why that database is using all the CPU? Memory leak, bad code, etc...
    Thank you

---This first thing to check if CPU is at 100% is to look for parallel queries:

  • Fotos for Mac consume a lot of the CPU because VideoConversionService

What is the Photos for Mac Video Conversion Service? This service is consuming all the CPU of macbook air (arround 150% of CPU) every time I open the Fotos for Mac. Somebody knows why is happening it? The name of the service is com.apple.photos.VideoConversionService.

Seriously, no one has an answer to this?  My fans are on almost constantly and I am running really slow and something called com.apple.photos.VideoConversionServices is using like 300%+ of my CPU.
Anyone know how to stop this or fix this or what this is?

  • Get-Content not grabbing all machines in a text file

    Good Afternoon,
I am running a script that I found on another page to determine if a particular service is running on multiple computers.
I am testing this for future use.
Here is the syntax in the ps1 file:
    $computers = Get-Content -Path C:\Temp\serverstest.txt
Get-Service -ComputerName $computers -Name "Service Name" | Select Name, MachineName, Status
The text file has five server names in it.  There are no spaces at the end of the name or extra lines after the last one. The script will run but it only returns the first server in the text file. Here is what the text file looks like
    The output is this:
    Name                                       Machine Name
    Status
    ccmexec                                   cmgrtstqw1
    Running
That is all that is returned.  It does not look like it is grabbing all the servers in the list to report against.
I figure I either mistyped something or goofed it somehow.
    Thoughts or suggestions.
PS...I have to say that I have found the Scripting Guys Forum IMMENSELY helpful in understanding Powershell....Thanks
