QTVR and Javascript interaction

I am developing a piece of training courseware which shows a 'start-up' procedure involving several panels / displays, and is being produced using HTML, Javascript and Quicktime VR. This is to be run 'client-side', i.e. on a local machine, no server technology is being used. The layout consists of a HTML page with a quicktime VR movie, which has 4 hotspots. Each hotspot links to a particular panel shown on a new HTML page.
For example, select hotspot "1" and jump to page "A", complete some process and return to the VR to select hotspot "2", jumping to page "B" to carry out further actions, then returning to the VR, and so on.
The VR and hotspots are set up using the code below:-

All hotspots are to be available all the time, BUT must be selected in the required order. Selection in the wrong sequence will NOT result in jumping to the relevant page, but will remain on the VR display and provide some feedback text onscreen, re. the incorrect choice of panel.
My problem is that I cannot find a way to "override" the hotspot links set up in the code above. Ideally I need to intercept the selection and carry out some function to check if it is the correct selection at that particular time, hence determine if the new page should be shown, or remain on the current page and just display the feedback text.
I have searched on many sites and found the following in a pdf from Apples site, which suggests that this can't be done (at least not with Javascript):-
"Important: Starting with QuickTime 7.1.5, you can no longer issue javascript:// URLs or call JavaScript functions from within a QuickTime movie. This feature was removed from QuickTime for security reasons."
Can anyone suggest any ways around this?

How do I integrate Java Applet and JavaScript?

This has been asked before, I have read the archives, yet I'm still left with some doubts, and some posts are VERY old and may not apply today. (sorry, some questions might seem stupid, this is my first applet). The purpose is to create a light weight application for managing certificates stored on a smart card, requesting certificate renewal from a server and installing the issued certificate on the card.
I need to create an applet (signed) to bridge the gab caused by the security limitations of JavaScript in order to access the smart card on the client. The applet will manage certificates on the card and do client-card interaction, while all client-server and user interaction is done by AJAX/JavaScript.
So, the applet is actually supposed to be an invisible object embedded on the page that is accessed by the JavaScript. How do I go about this?
- is there any reason to prefer JApplet over Applet?
- do the JavaScript need to invoke start() or init() or is this done on page load?
- are there limitations on data exchange with the applet (ie. only string types)?
- how do I throw exceptions from the applet to the calling script?
and: will is it better to let JavaScript do all http to keep the applet light, or to let the applet fetch files given a URL (to fetch the new certificate)?
If the applet is stored in a jar-file, how do I indicate which class/method to invoke? Do the JavaScript have access to public methods only?

Flash CS3 and Javascript

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote in another thread about how
Flash CS3 (using AS3) can directly handle javascript. I must tell
you that this direct handling is limited. You cannot call custom
javascript functions from html this way. If you need to call
function in your html, you must still use ExternalInterface.
Flash CS3 has a new function called navigateToURL().
navigateToURL() is part of the flash.net package and is
asynchronous (does not return any kind of value).
Let's say you want to throw a simple javascript alert message
to a user. You need to first make a call to the URLRequest
constructor and pass it a string value that uses javascript
protocol. In the alert example, you'll be calling the string
"javascript:alert('Your first AS3 javascript call');" To those
familiar with HTML, this will look very very familiar. All put
together, it looks something like the code below....
This idea can be expanded on and added to custom event
handlers in classes for buttons and other things in your projects.
Remember though that you must call the javascript code as it
appears in the javascript protocol. So to open a popup window,
you'd need to use window.open( blah, blah, blah ). Personally, I
still use ExternalInterface to call my Javascript functions (if I
need them at all). The only reason I use navigateToURL is when the
browser I'm using does not support ExternalInterface.
Anyhow, the code for the above example is down below. If you
have questions, post them here.

my post 2+ weeks ago was adrenaline driven and premature. the
example I just gave was the code I was talking about. Why I ever
posted that URLLoader was capable of javascript interaction is
beyond me. I know better. The purpose of my post was simply to
answer questions I've been getting in my e-mail and to clarify my
original post 2 weeks ago.
As I stated, navigateToURL is meant for specific scenarios
just as getURL was in AS1 and 2 which was replaced by navigateToURL
in AS3. This would be more for the Linux users and the a-typical
O/S users where ExternalInterface is not supported by the browsers
on those operating systems. I do not condone using navigateToURL or
getURL. I will always recommend external javascript files and
ExternalInterface. My apologies for leading anyone on with my
premature run-off of the typing finger.

Java is a programming language, Javascript is more for web pages. It is used to add interactivity to your web pages. 2 different languages.

As mentioned previously, if you had placed the javascript as indexed child of head element it would be fine.
<Head> is named child of <metaContainer> which inturn is named child of <document> element. The example below should make it clear.

As such <script> element can occur in HTML document.

In the same way UIX also allows the use of script element with in its <body> element.
With case 2 you can see the way the script gets inlined in the HTML document. Please run the UIX and view source for the rendered page. It should become obvious.

How is the length of a string calculated in Java? and JavaScript?

Hi all,
Do any of you know how the length of a string is being calculated in Java and JavaScript? For example, a regular char is just counted as 1 char, but sometimes other chars such as CR, LF, and CR LF are counted as two. I know there are differences in the way Java and JavaScript calculate the length of a string, but I can't find any sort of "rules" on those anywhere online.

account for that? That sux. I don't know. I'm just making infrerences (==WAGs) based on what DrClap said.
I assume it would return the number of chars in the array, rather than the number of symbols (glyphs?) this translates into. But I might have it bass ackwards.

Closing the browser windows created by web.show_document and javascript

From Forms I am issuing a http request using web.show_document and javascript:window.open(). The http request makes a remote procedure call to a coldfusion component on a JRun appserver. I want this rpc to fire in the background so that the current forms browser window remains as is.
The logic is as follows

The http request works fine but leaves a browser window behind. It's the one created by the javascript.window.open(). If I remove the self.close() from the javascript then I have two browser windows open, one from web.show_document and the other, as described previously, from the window.open().
Any idea how I can force closure of the window opened by the window.open() ?

Using Quicken to manage a bank account, I get an error message from the bank that cookies and javascript must be enabled, but I don't get that message when I connect with Internet Explorer.

Firefox allows me to get the bank home page through Quicken. But when I try to login, the error message appears saying "cookies and javascript" must be enabled. I have Java on my system, but in Firefox under "tools/options/ I don't find any way to "enable" javascript. I have enabled "cookies".
I have no problem logging in at the bank site using Internet Explorer, but to use it, I have to designate it as the "default browser" before connecting through Quicken. I'd rather keep Firefox as the default.
A bank tech representative was unable to find any commands in Firefox that would deal with this problem, although she clearly had manuals for both Internet Explorer and Firefox. So she concluded that I would have to use Explorer for this operation, since it allowed control of security level settings. She said that in Explorer, security level should be set to medium.
Is there some similar control in Firefox?

When a file url is clicked instead of asking for Save or Open or Cancel options, the file gets opened on IPad by default.
Is this default behaviour which cannot be changed or can it be configured to ask user preference?
When we try to download a file(.pvw file -> a model file) in the above application, safari throws "Download failed" error.
Please suggest what needs to be done.

Safari on an iPad in general does not allow downloading of files. That's a safety precaution in the iOS SDK to keep unauthorized content off of iOS devices. Safari will open from the web site file types that it can handle, but direct downloading isn't normal behavior, and I don't believe the behavior can be changed, though you can try asking in the developer forum, either here or the one to which you have access as a member of Apple's iOS developer program.

SSO and JavaScript

Hi all,
does any one of you know about any restriction or any other issue involving SSO and JavaScript?
We have a web app in an OC4J instance, which uses JSP and JavaScript.
When SSO is disabled for the application, everything goes well. But when SSO is active, the page loads a lot slower, and the IE browser always shows the error icon when any component tries to execute Javascript.
Any ideas about this issue?

I am truely confused by how you are attempting to achieve things.
1. The Office 2013 package is only supported if deployed globally
2. AppLocker is the way to restrict users from starting different applications
3. Office 2013 is not supported to be published to users
It seems you have issues with #3. Which is not supported. I am not saying it "doesn't" work, but considering you have issues with it - perhaps we can start by not doing it?

Per your statement, Office 2013 is published globally. Ergo, all shortcuts and applications should be available to all users.

yes. there are a couple of ways to do this.
one is the create a child movieclip of container_mc and load
into that child and assign your onPress/startDrag
onRelease/stopDrag methods to container_mc.
a second way is to load into container_mc (like you're
currently doing), wait until loading is complete (ie, use the
onLoad method of an mcl listener) and then assign your methods to
container_mc.

I suspected you used the eye icon on the timeline to hide the message, but that one has no impact whatsoever on the published version. It is only meant to be used for editing reasons on the stage, to hide objects temporarily on a crowded stage. It is confusing, certainly in CP8 where for both instances the same eye icon is used. In previous versions the Properties panel had a checkbox for 'Show in Output', which was IMO much clearer than this eye icon. But of course, that is only my personal opinion.

Only if the form has been Reader Enabled before it is sent out to the user with Reader.
There are two ways of Reader Enabling the form. One using Acrobat Standard v9 or Acrobat Professional v8 (both have license restrictions). The other is to use LC Reader Extensions ES2, which is a server product (additional costs).

Drag and Drop Interaction Scoring

Hi-
I've created a drag and drop interaction for a quiz with four
objects. Each object has to match up to the correct spot in order
for the user to get the answer correct. I've done this type of
interactions before successfully and not had a problem with
scoring.
But this time .. the only thing I can see that's different
about this quiz is that I'm not assigning any points in the "Score"
field - I am instead using the Status of Correct Response alone.
I've found that this interaction scoring works perfectly for my
other quiz interactions but there seems to be a problem with the
drag and drop - when the user moves the objects around and
temporarily places an object in the wrong (or maybe even correct)
spot, each of these movements is being racked up as correct in this
interaction So, if there's an ambivalent user they're going to get
many more points than is even supposed to be possible.
I can't see anything different that I've done with this
interaction other than the scoring. I changed to correct response
scoring because it was the only way I could figure out how to reset
the quiz score after the user leaves and comes back. (using
TotalCorrect)
Anyway, I'm open to ideas - even if it's not the scoring -
any help would be appreciated!

Don't use the quiz knowledge objects and code yourself...?
You'll find many on here who can help you with hand coding
and probably none
who know much about implementing those KO's who can answer
questions. The
reason is if you know enough to be able to answer questions,
you know enough
to know that these KO's are a short term crutch that cause
long term
problems.
