Query is dead slow

Question

declare @search varchar(100)
select id,name,grade from VCustomer(10 million records)
where cast(id as varchar) like @search +%
here id is bigint and cast operation used in where condition so query is getting slow.Please do the needful.How to avoid this cast opeartion in query.

Thanks for your valuable response.But still I am getting table scan.
I have modified the column data type into Varchar.But in where clause there are two string search i.e.
declare @search varchar(100)
ID varchar(50),CustomerID varchar(50)
select id,name,grade from VCustomer(10 million records) VC LEFT OUTER JOIN VBooking VB(20 Millions)
ON VC.ID=VB.CustomerID
where ID like @search +'%' or CustomerID like @search +'%'
Here I am getting both table scans.Please do the needful.
