Query on Patch Deployment Process in SCCM 2012 R2

Hi All,
I have a Below SCCM environment in place, I have a very basic question on how Patches are downloaded by Client machines,
Environment Details:
one SCCM Server in Hongkong DC one DP server in Singapore Datacentre There are 14 Clients in Singapore DC as below,
02 Hyper-V Server Each Hyper-V server has 06 VM's In one of the 06 VM in Hyper-V 02 we installed the DP role. Patch Size : 500MB (We have created as a single software update Group)
Collection: We have created 02 Collections, each one for One Hyper-V and all it’s 06 VM’s
Question: When we are Deploying patches to each collection, how clients will download
the patches from DP ?
01.
Will all the clients start downloading the patches immediately or one by one?
02.
Out of these 500 MB of patches, hope only 100MB of patches will be applicable host client, In this case, the client will download only the required patches or all (I have choosen required
during deployment)
03.
If the answer for 01 Question is all will download at the same time means, by any chance can we control the behaviour (One by one without changing the collection)
Sundar

They download them using BITS from the nearest DP based upon the boundaries within content location boundary groups that you have set up.
1. For updates within a required deployment that are applicable to a particular system, they will begin downloading them at the "available" time.
2. Correct. The clients perform a compliance scan before they download any updates and only download those updates that are assigned to them using a required deployment that the compliance scan reveals that they need.
3. No. There is no control of order; however, clients will use BITS. You can however enable the deadline randomization feature using a client settings package. This will cause each client to randomly delay for up to 2 hours thus spreading out any workloads.
Alternatively, if you need to micro-manage the order that updates are installed, you can setup of a separate series of collections that have maintenance windows set on them and populate the collection appropriately. These maintenance windows will apply to
the systems within these collection for all activity on those systems regardless of the collection that was used to assign the deployment.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Enterprise Deployment Issues using SCCM 2012 R2

    Hi,
I have been trying to deploy Adobe Creative Cloud Enterprise to Windows 8.1 machines that are identical, using SCCM 2012 R2.
The Adobe package seems fine, because it seems to deploy successfully to some machines. And SCCM 2012 R2 has been configured correctly, as I can deploy other software using it, and again, it deploys Adobe CC successfully to some of the machines.
I have tried comparing the package that is downloaded on the test machine/client machine, with the original package on the distribution point, using Beyond Compare, and there are no differences.
I have contacted Adobe Enterprise Support, and they asked me to send to them log files from Event Viewer, the msi installer, and other Adobe logs, from the machine that failed the deployment. However, after Adobe studying them, they told me that they could not identify any problems... Strange, because I could have sworn that I saw error 1603 pop up over 20 times on different machines indicating that the 'Set-up.dat' file had a problem with it.
After all the testing on over 20 identical machines (same hardware/same software), using different configurations on SCCM 2012 R2 and the client machines, I still can't seem to have a reliable solution to deploying Adobe CC.
The fact that it deploys successfully on one machine and fails on another, or sometimes deploy to two machines and fail on another (simultaneously), is something that I don't understand.
Another thing is that, if I retry the deployment 10-15 times after it failed the first time, it might go through...
Adobe Enterprise Support asked me if they could remote into a machine that failed the deployment to have a look at it and I agreed to that option, but it seems like my issue has been ignored because they never got back to me.
Has anyone had this kind of problem or anything similar before?
I need to be able to deploy this remotely to 100+ machines. So installing manually is not an option.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi Robert,
We seem to be having a very similar issue.  Our installs would randomly fail with error code 1603 and an error message about a fault in Set-up.dat.  Failure rate was near 95% on our 900 machines.  Adobe Support and Karl having been looking into our issues but so far no solution has been found.
Having done a lot of investigating we've managed to deploy our package using a schedule task running as a domain admin.  This is a nasty solution and we don't intend on using this permanently, but we needed to get the package out.

  • Email notification status after deployment finished in sccm 2012 r2

We run 300+ server security patch update deployements every weekend with limited human resources to check when a deployment job is finished. Our limited weekend staff needs to run post deployment checks failed deployments . Is there an option in SCCM
2012 R2 to send a email notification once a job is finished?

I haven't taking a Powershell scripting class yet, so this will be kind of difficult to make work for what it is i am looking for. So i have to modify an Application Request script just to get a job done email notification SCCM 2012?
Yes. There is no builtin functionality to send email when deployments have run.

  • Deploying Applications with SCCM 2012 R2 to Server 2008 R2 RDS servers

I'm having some trouble finding some concrete information from Microsoft regarding the deployment of applications to RDS servers using SCCM 2012 R2. There seems to be a lot of conjecture, old information and old wives tales floating around and I was hoping
I could get some information confirmed!
    1. MSI installs automatically switch to install mode on RDS servers?
I've seen this mentioned a few times. I've also seen it mentioned that it is only true when running the MSI from the console session manually (i.e clicking the MSI file) not running as SYSTEM as SCCM would usually do. Can someone confirm if they do this
    themselves or not?
    2. Users still logged in when deploying applications?
Is it possible to deploy an application while users are still logged in? Is this only related to going into 'install' mode and taking the chance that a user will do something that will cause issues? Or is it known to cause issues?
I guess those are the main ones, I'm experienced in SCCM but not with deploying to RDS servers, I cant seem to find any straight answers!
    Anyway, thanks in advance!

I've never had large enough RDS environment to use SCCM for app push, but from my experience in managing 2012/R2 RDS and local installs, I never bother with switching to install mode anymore and it works fine.  Now if you're skeptical, you can
easily build this into a script that runs as a pre-req to your .MSI as part of the software package in SCCM so it's not a big deal.
As for installing apps while users are logged in, shouldn't be a problem if you're installing a new app., if however you're updating an existing application or uninstalling it, then it may be best to drain that RDS host first of all user sessions then do
the work just to be safe.  this also helps avoid reboots.

  • I need to upgrade the silverlight version that is deployed with the SCCM 2012 client installation

We have SCCM 2012 SP1 installed and I need to upgrade the version of silverlight that get installed on the client deployement.
The version that is automaticly deployed is 5.1.10411.0 and this one is not compatible with Firefox.  When you click on Application Catalog it start the browser but it fails to load because of the silverlight plug-in that is not up to date.  The
version that is working fine is the 5.1.20913.0 and it's already installed on my SCCM site server.
So that is why I'm looking to upgrade the silverlight that is installed with the SCCM client.
I know that a simple workarround would be to create a package that would be deployed after the client gets installed, but why not changing the original package at the source instead of installing twice the same software the get the right version!
Is there someone that could point me where I could upgrade this Silverlight prerequirement software version ?

Note that I have not tested either of these and they will not be supported by Microsoft.
    1. Copy your new version of Silverlight.exe to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Configuration Manager\Client\i386
(you'll have to re-distribute the client package after this).
    OR
    2. You could edit the ccmsetup.xml file with an alternative location for silverlight.exe

  • QUERY TO FIND FREE DISKSPACE IN SCCM 2012 DISTRIBUTION POINT

this is the query to get free disk space on distribution point ,but this is not working for sccm 2012 ,please help
    Select
    Distinct
    SD
    .Name0,
    SR
    .RoleName,
    LD
    .DeviceID0,
    LD
    .FreeSpace0
    * 100
    /  LD.Size0
    'Free Disk Space'
    From
    v_R_System SD
    Join
    v_Gs_Logical_Disk LD on SD.ResourceId
    = LD.ResourceId
    Join
    v_SystemResourceList SR on SD.Netbios_Name0
    = SR.ServerName
    Where
    LD.DriveType0
    = 3
    and
    SR.RoleName
    =
    'SMS Distribution Point'
    ankith

    you're probably getting 0 rows...
v_SystemResourceList.ServerName contains the netbios+domain name, while v_Gs_Logical_Disk.Netbios_Name0 only contains the netbios name (no domain), therefore the join doesn't find any matching rows...
    You need to trim the domain name from the field {LEFT(SRL.ServerName,CHARINDEX('.', SRL.ServerName)-1)}
    try this query instead:
    SELECT DISTINCT
    SYS.Name0 As 'Device'
    ,SRL.RoleName As 'Role'
    ,LD.DeviceID0 As 'Disk',LD.FreeSpace0,LD.Size0
    ,LD.FreeSpace0 * 100 / LD.Size0 As 'Free Disk Space'
    FROM
    v_R_System As SYS
    Join v_Gs_Logical_Disk As LD on SYS.ResourceId = LD.ResourceId
    Join v_SystemResourceList As SRL on SYS.Netbios_Name0 = LEFT(SRL.ServerName,CHARINDEX('.', SRL.ServerName)-1)
    WHERE
    LD.DriveType0 = 3
And SRL.RoleName = 'SMS Distribution Point'
Additionally, if you notice that the LD.FreeSpace0 field returns NULL, you need to enable the hardware Inventory collection of this information [ client settings > hardware inventory > Logical Disk (SMS_LogicalDisk) > Free Space (MB) ]... Then initiate
the hardware Inventory cycle action and it should show results...
I don't have this field inventoried, so I cannot confirm the accuracy of the query...

  • OSD: TS deployed to Vista SCCM 2012 client, reboots then doesn't find network drivers

    Hi,
We deploy SCCM 2012 client to a SCCM 2007 Vista pc.
We then deploy a task sequence to install Windows 7.
Everything works fine on a vm, it reboots in winpe then starts the task sequence. On a laptop however, it does not work. F8 shows it does not get an ip address, it seems as if no network adaptor is recognized.
However, the same task sequence works fine on the same laptop when pxe booting + I added the driver to winpe. Didn’t help. Please advise.

I think I know what the root cause is, but not how to solve it.
In diskpart, I can see 3 volumes:
    *Volume 0 = D-drive, DVD-rom,
*Volume 1 = no drive letter, partition of 400 GB
*Volume 2 = C-drive, label "Configuratio", type "removable" 4 GB
It should install to the 400 GB drive but it seems that its installing to the removable drive.
Not sure what that is since there is no USB attached. Probably it is the winpe temporarely mounted(?)
The behaviour I have is described
here and is also referring to USB.
=> I guess I have to tell the temporarely mounted drive to be f.e. Z when installing in full OS.
    Any idea howto do this?

  • What is the security context when deploying application using SCCM 2012?

As far as i know when using Group Policy the software is always installed under SYSTEM security context. However i cannot find any information related to SCCM 2012 (and deploying applications) security context.
Also is there a difference in doing "Install for User" or "Install for Device/System"?
    Thanks

Thanks. Just to confirm that if you use Group Policy and you Publish the msi for user when the user install it from Add/Remove Programs it is still going to be executed in SYSTEM security context?
And while we are on this topic - is the above (about the security context in SCCM 2012) written anywhere in some official MS web page?
Not sure about the context for Intellimirror, but for ConfigMgr it's as Ronnie and Torsten stated. This may be documented somewhere, not sure. Not everything is documented though -- in fact, I'd say less than 25% (probably less than 10%) of everything
to be known about ConfigMgr is officially documented. Note that this is the same for any product -- there simply are far too many permutations and possibilities to document them all.

  • Deploy Smartview via SCCM 2012

I have tried everything - even calling for support which got me nothing!
How do you deploy Smartview via SCCM? What command line works? All their docs S-U-C-K and do not work!

    Hi,
Am not very sure of this as i work on Hyperion but not on SCCM. but you can give a try to check with your SCCM team with below command. We have mst developed which updates the registry keys so my command looks like  below.
    msiexec /i "D:\OracleHyperionSmartViewforOfficeFusionEdition.msi" transforms="D:\OraHyperionSmartVw_111210_00.mst" /qb!
if you dont have mst then you can use something like msiexec /i "D:\OracleHyperionSmartViewforOfficeFusionEdition.msi" /qb!
    Hope this helps.

  • Having issues deploying packages in sccm 2012.

I am having trouble deploying packages to my environment. From what I can tell with the trouble shooting I have done so far. The run with admin rights is not passing through to the clients. If I use a standard software package .exe or .msi (like adobe, MS
Office) the package or application installs fine. However if I use, powershell, vb, .bat, straight command line
MsiExec.exe, They all fail to what seems like it’s not passing the admin right through because I get the UAC prompt and install fails. How do I get the admin rights to work with the other forms of installs so I can push them out silent like I do with .exe and
    .msi applications?
    Thanks
    Tony

So first, you can absolutely use Applications for more than just MSIs; for an example see:
    http://blog.configmgrftw.com/configmgr-2012-application-deployment-by-example-user-exe-deployment/
For packages though, the setting is in the program and is on the environment tab in the Run Mode box. Packages merely define the source files, programs define what to do with those source files like the command-line and rights to use.

  • Superseded error 0x87D00213 (-2016411117) when deploying App on SCCM 2012 R2

I've setup an application deployment that requires install, but I'm seeing this error along with "Failed to uninstall superseded deployment type." The app is suppose to uninstall an older version then install a new version. It works fine on two
    other machines.
BTW - I get this error as soon as I hit Summarize button. I also looked at AppEnforce.log, but it hasn't been updated in over an hour.

Okay, I spoke too soon. I just watched it uninstall old app and install new one.
I would still like to know why it's throwing that error message?
Also, if some users don't have the rights to install this app is there a way I can use a different account for the uninstall and install?

  • SCCM 2012 SP1 Maintenance -- Random Environments Rebooting Early

Background on my deployment process for SCCM 2012 SP1:  I run a Powershell script that sends out a package and configures settings exactly the same for the particular environment set.
The deployment script will call one or several environments at a time, as applicable.
It will take each environment, affix the settings, push the package to be deployed (based on OS) during the specified maintenance window, and repeat. It is a very consistent process.
Last week, I deployed to A-CLOUD (name changed for simplicity purposes), among others.
A-CLOUD went through the same process as the others in the script (see end of paragraph), in which the appropriate settings were checked.
The environment was supposed to update and reboot on Saturday, July 12.
However, A-CLOUD (only) updated and bounced as soon as I sent out the package on Wednesday, July 9.
Also in the same deployment script was B-CLOUD, C-CLOUD, D-CLOUD, and E-CLOUD, which all updated and rebooted as planned on July 12.
I received an alert that A-CLOUD was rebooted by Configuration Manager.  I checked the reboot logs in Task Scheduler to compare A-CLOUD with C-CLOUD days later to compare a faulty reboot with one that ran correctly
(both of these environments are on the same site).  There was no difference in the log files.
This issue occurs at least one a month and I have only noticed ONE pattern, Server 2008R2 -- however, it is not always the same environment that will reboot early each month, same week, same day, etc.  It seems to be
    random.
    Any ideas?

This is way too generic to be answered. What ConfigMgr object type are you deploying (package? application?)? How is the reboot initiated? How are the deployment settings etc.?

  • SCCM 2012 package deployment reboot behaviour

    Hi,
When i deploy package from SCCM 2012 with default reboot behavior it forces reboot. I want to suppress the reboot and let user to postpone the reboot whenever they want with popup window as like available for SCCM patch deployment. Is there way to achieve
this. Can someone please provide suggestion if already done it.
    Regards,
    Madhan

Actually, default behavior does *not* force a reboot. To have ConfigMgr force a reboot, you must choose the option that says ConfigMgr forces a reboot. Thus, the command-line you've configured is forcing the reboot which means you need to adjust the command-line
to suppress the reboot as that's outside of ConfigMgr's control.
