Question about Hyperion Environmental Variables
Hi,
Can someone please give me a clear explanation about the following Environment variables in Hyperion. I am very much confused about these variables, it would be really helpful for me to understand better if I get a clear explanations of those.
1) ARBORPATH
2) ESSBASEPATH
3) HYPERION_HOME
4) ORACLE_HOME
5)ORACLE_INSTANCE
Thanks in advance!!!
Regards,
Newton
Basically I want to know if declaring
a final instance variable and assigning it to an
existing Object will make an immutable copy of that
Object. Big no. It will neither make a copy, nor will anything be immutable. Final just means that once the value or reference of the attribute or variable is set, it can't be altered.
final StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
sb.append("!");still works.
Your inner class will access the instance of Dimensions stored in myDims. There won't be any other instance.

Question about using constant variables in Forms
As I am still very new to Forms, please forgive my ignorance if the answer to my question is very simple. I am trying to figure out how to use constant variables within my Forms application. For example, if I want to setup return code constants for the application (mind me, these are examples):
RC_SUCCESS CONSTANT PLS_INTEGER := 1;
RC_FAILURE CONSTANT PLS_INTEGER := 0;
RC_YEAR_DATA_NOT_FOUND := 50;
Then in a module I created, if I wanted to check the return code against one of the constants I would do:
DECLARE
rc PLS_INTEGER;
BEGIN
GET_YEAR_DATA('2000', rc);
IF rc = RC_YEAR_DATA_NOT_FOUND THEN
-- Do some error handling
END IF;
END;
I know that you can declare constants within individual procedures or packages but I can't see to find information on how to do this globally for the application. I've read about using global variables within Forms but the CHAR data type only and the fact the value can be changed doesn't really fit for this purpose. Am I missing something? Is there a config file or something for the webserver that can be used to set these up??
Any help would be appreciated.
ThanksTo declare constants create a Package-Specification in a pll and deifne all your constants there, something like:
PACKAGE PK_CONSTANTS IS
RC_SUCCESS CONSTANT PLS_INTEGER := 1;
RC_FAILURE CONSTANT PLS_INTEGER := 0;
RC_YEAR_DATA_NOT_FOUND := 50;
END;Then attach that pll to all your forms-modules, and use it like
IF rc = PK_CONSTANTS.RC_YEAR_DATA_NOT_FOUND THEN
END IF;A word about exceptions or errors: In my eyes its clearer (and in case of exceptions even better) to raise an exception than to hide it behind return-codes. -
Question about final instance variables
Hi, I recently have come across a situation that I realized I did not understand and I could not find the answer after a bit of googling and searching the forum so I thought I would quickly pose the question to the crowd. Basically I want to know if declaring a final instance variable and assigning it to an existing Object will make an immutable copy of that Object. For example:
Dimension myDims;
public void someMethod()
myDims = new Dimension(320, 240);
doSomething();
public void doSomething()
final myFinalDims = myDims;
This is not real code (obviously) and I made it quickly just to get my point across. Basically my question is if I create an Anonymous Inner class within the doSomething() method that accesses the myFinalDims variable, will the inner class actually access the myDims variable (which could have its value changed before the inner class accesses the variable) or will it be accessing a copy of the myDims Object that will have the same value as when the final variable was declared and instantiated?Basically I want to know if declaring
a final instance variable and assigning it to an
existing Object will make an immutable copy of that
Object. Big no. It will neither make a copy, nor will anything be immutable. Final just means that once the value or reference of the attribute or variable is set, it can't be altered.
final StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer();
sb.append("!");still works.

Basic questions about Objects and variables...
If I have the following:
Species theAnimal = new Species();
Am I right in saying that the object here is 'theAnimal'?.
If we just wrote it as:
Species theAnimal
Then i'm assuming that here 'theAnimal' is the variable name...right?
I'm just trying to get facts straight when reading.
Thanks for the help...
YashAt first, theAnimal is pointing to one object, and
theMammoth is pointing to another?
In the final line, they're both pointing to the same
object. Isn't that kind of saying, they're pointing
to the same memory address/location?Yes.
They might actually hold the physical memory address of the object, or they might hold some other abstraction that the VM uses to locate the object. In either case, though, they both hold the same value, and you can picture that value as the address of the object. -
Question about Visited slide variables
Hi All,
I have seen an effect in a scorm course that I would like to replicate, unfortunatly it was not in Captivate.
I would like a button to contain a table of contents to appear when you hover over a button/image. Next to the title of the slide I would like a tick to show if the user has visited the slide or not.
There are 20 slides in my module and to represent this I would like 20 small squares at the bottom of each slide. Is it possible for them each to be a button that a) takes user to corresponding slide, b) Is red if it is the slide they are looking at, and c) Is blue if they have visited it as now they can technically jump to any slide.
Thanks in advance everybody.
ChrisHi Chris
Aside from using the Table Of Contents (TOC) feature, Captivate doesn't really offer anything like this.
If you want to be adventurous, you could construct something like that using images and variables and Advanced Actions to hide and show the images.
Cheers... Rick

A Question about Hyperion Application Link (HAL)
Do we recomand to use HAL to load data?
I noticed that I should use a program named "Vignette® V7 Business Integration Studio" to use HAL. But I can not foud it in the edelivery. Where can I download it?HAL was a Hyperion branded version of Vignette, so hence the name.
HAL is a reasonable tool for simple to medium complexity integrations into Essbase or Planning and works pretty well.
As the other poster mentioned it will soon not be supported and you need to look into ODI, DIM or FDM options. DIM and FDM are purchasable options, but you should get a a reduced license ODI included (similar to HAL) on v9.3+. ODI and DIM are more robust ETL/ELT tools, where as FDM is a slightly different proposition that allows local entities to take control of loading and mapping their source data, with robust auditing etc.
Hope this helps

Question about session variables and binding
Hi All,
I'm a newbie with Application Express. I've gone through several tutorials and a book, and now I'm actually getting started with apex. My first adventure is a tiny little form, where all you do is fill it out and it sends an email. Pretty simple.
And, i have it working just fine - but I have a question about something I don't quite understand. Basically, I am generating the email text in a page process. And some of the form fields work fine if i reference them as *:ACCT_NAME*, but some give me the dreaded "not all variables bound" error. For the ones that give me the error, I can reference them like V('ACCT_NAME').
So, as a newbie, I'm a little confused. When is it appropriate to use the V function, and when it is appropriate to use binding? Why would one of the fields work with binding but not another from the same form?
Thanks for any clarification you can offer,
LisaLisa,
A bind variable is a place holder variable available in an environment.It is used quite frequently(outside Apex Context) in SQL and PLSQL scripts and especially in Dynamic SQL statements.Many times using a bind variable gives better performance. In the Apex environment,page items and many other variables related to the session are available as bind variables and hence their value can be referred in SQL,PLSQL contexts as :VARIABLE_NAME.
Now V() function is an apex specific function which returns the value of an apex session variable outside the apex environment. So as Machaan pointed out, it is used in
procedures and triggers that gets called from within an apex session. This is required since the bind variables themselves are not directly available in the SQL environment but their values from the corresponding session can be accessed by this apex built-in function.
The length of any Bind variable name is limited to 30 characters, this is a limitation inherited from Oracle SQL itself and hence session variables(page or application items) whose name has a length which exceeds 30 characters cannot be used as the :ITEM_NAME format. In such cases you would have to use the v() method again. This might be happening in your case. -
Question about Local Variables (Multiple answers welcomed!)
A couple of questions about Local Variables
1. Programmers always say: “Do not abuse of Local Variables”. I’d like to know, when and where Local variable are most efficiently used?
2. If I have to create a couple of local variables, is there anyway to “clone” them without going through the repetitive “create/local variables” mouse click each time? (When I try to copy and paste, it creates a new variables instead of the one that I am trying to reproduce)
3. Which is faster in execution: Updating a variable through a) writing to property node/value or b) through local variable
Everyone’s input is welcomed, so if this question is already answered, please
feel free to add additional comments/answers!1. Use Local Variables in user interface code and no where else. The only exception is using a local variable of a cluster output to define the datatype for a bundle by name node.
2. You can drag copy them then right click to get to a menu of all the currently defined controls and indicators on the VI.
3. B. The problem with A is that it forces a thread switch to the user interface thread--which can take time if you aren't already in it, and it's a very convoluted process under the hood. NI's advice never update indicator values through a property node unless you absolutely, positively can't figure out some other way of doing it.

A question about UDA and Data-Forms
Hi all,
I have a couple of questions about UDA. I am using Hyperion Planning 11.1.1.3m, and when I desing a Data-Form I would need to use the UDA I asigned for the Entity dimension: is that posiible?
The other question is, when creating a Substiution Variable in Essbase I use the function @UDA (+dimension+, "MemberA"), but when using this variable in the Data-Form, it does nothing at all(in fact, it is been detected as an error). Why is that happening?
Thanks a lotUse an attribute dimension to achieve what you are trying to do with UDA's in a data form. An attribute dimension will allow you to filter on members in the base dimension by a specific attribute the same way a UDA will. You can create the attribute dimension in the dimension editor in Planning by selecting the base dimension (Entity) and then select the custom attributes' button. Check the dba guide for a step-by-step approach.
With regards to the subvar, are you trying to add the function as a value of the subvar when you create it in EAS? If so, this is not allowed. What are you trying to do with the subvar on the form? Subvars are supported in data forms as part of the member selection for a dimension. For instance, you can set up a subvar called CurYear and set the value equal to FY11 for the Fiscal Year dimension. In the data form you can set the member selection for the Fiscal Year dimension to CurYear. When the user opens the form, the member FY11 is returned. -
A question about the impact of SQL*PLUS SERVEROUTPUT option on v$sql

OS : Fedora Core 17 (X86_64) Kernel 3.6.6-1.fc17.x86_64I would like to ask a question about the SQL*Plus SET SERVEROUTPUT ON/OFF option and its impact on queries on views such as v$sql and v$session. Here is the problem
Actually I define three variables in SQL*Plus in order to store sid, serial# and prev_sql_id columns from v$session in order to be able to use them later, several times in different other queries, while I'm still working in the current session.
So, here is how I proceed
SET SERVEROUTPUT ON; -- I often activate this option as the first line of almost all of my SQL-PL/SQL script files
SET SQLBLANKLINES ON;
VARIABLE mysid NUMBER
VARIABLE myserial# NUMBER;
VARIABLE saved_sql_id VARCHAR2(13);
-- So first I store sid and serial# for the current session
BEGIN
SELECT sid, serial# INTO :mysid, :myserial#
FROM v$session
WHERE audsid = SYS_CONTEXT('UserEnv', 'SessionId');
END;
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
-- Just check to see the result
SQL> SELECT :mysid, :myserial# FROM DUAL;
:MYSID :MYSERIAL#
129 1067
SQL> Now, let's say that I want to run the following query as the last SQL statement run within my current session
SELECT * FROM employees WHERE salary >= 2800 AND ROWNUM <= 10;According to Oracle® Database Reference 11g Release 2 (11.2) description for v$session
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/server.112/e25513/dynviews_3016.htm#REFRN30223]
the column prev_sql_id includes the sql_id of the last sql statement executed for the given sid and serial# which in the case of my example, it will be the above mentioned SELECT query on the employees table. As a result, right after the SELECT statement on the employees table I run the following
BEGIN
SELECT prev_sql_id INTO :saved_sql_id
FROM v$session
WHERE sid = :mysid AND serial# = :myserial#;
END;
PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
SQL> SELECT :saved_sql_id FROM DUAL;
:SAVED_SQL_ID
9babjv8yq8ru3
SQL> Having the value of sql_id, I'm supposed to find all information about cursor(s) for my SELECT statement and also its sql_text value in v$sql. Yet here is what I get when I query v$sql upon the stored sql_id
SELECT child_number, sql_id, sql_text
FROM v$sql
WHERE sql_id = :saved_sql_id;
CHILD_NUMBER SQL_ID SQL_TEXT
0 9babjv8yq8ru3 BEGIN DBMS_OUTPUT.GET_LINES(:LINES, :NUMLINES); END;Therefore instead of
SELECT * FROM employees WHERE salary >= 2800 AND ROWNUM <= 10;for the value of sql_text I get the following value
BEGIN DBMS_OUTPUT.GET_LINES(:LINES, :NUMLINES);Which is not of course what I was expecting to find in v$sql for the given sql_id.
After a bit googling I found the following thread on the OTN forum where it had been suggested (well I think maybe not exactly for the same problem) to turn off SERVEROUTPUT.
Problem with dbms_xplan.display_cursor
This was precisely what I did
SET SERVEROUTPUT OFFafter that I repeated the whole procedure and this time everything worked pretty well as expected. I checked SQL*Plus documentation for SERVEROUTPUT
and also v$session page, yet I didn't find anything indicating that SERVEROUTPUT should be switched off whenever views such as v$sql, v$session
are queired. I don't really understand the link in terms of impact that one can have on the other or better to say rather, why there is an impact
Could anyone kindly make some clarification?
thanks in advance,

Hi Dariyoosh,
SET SERVEROUTPUT ON has the effect of executing dbms_output.get_lines after each and every statement. Not only related to system view.
Here below what Tom Kyte is explaining in this page:
Now, sqlplus sees this functionality and says "hey, would not it be nice for me to dump this buffer to screen for the user?". So, they added the SQLPlus command "set serveroutput on" which does two things
1) it tells SQLPLUS you would like it <b>to execute dbms_output.get_lines after each and every statement</b>. You would like it to do this network rounding after each call. You would like this extra overhead to take place (think of an install script with hundreds/thousands of statements to be executed -- perhaps, just perhaps you don't want this extra call after every call)
2) SQLPLUS automatically calls the dbms_output API "enable" to turn on the buffering that happens in the package.Regards.

Question about DBCA generate script o create RAC database 2 node cluster
Question about creating two node RAC database 11g after installing and configuration 11g clusterware. I've used DBCA to generate script to create a rac database. I've set
environment variable ORACLE_SID=RAC and the creating script creates instance of RAC1 and RAC2. My understanding is that each node will represent a node, however there should only be one database with a name of 'RAC'. Please adviseYou are getting your terminology mixed up.
You only have one database. Take a look, there are one set of datafiles on shared storage.
You have 2 instances which are accessing one database.
Database name is RAC. Instance names are RAC1, RAC2, etc, etc.
Also, if you look at the listener configuration and if your tnsnames is setup properly then connecting to RAC will connect you to either one of the instances wheras connecting to RAC1 will connect you to that instance. -
A quick question about WebDynpro SLD and R/3 with concurrent users
Hello ,
I have a very quick question about Webdynpros and SLD connecting to an R/3 system, when you configure a webdynpro to connect to an R/3 system using SLD, you configure a user name and password from the R/3 for the SLD to use. What I would like to know is when I have concurrent users of my webdynpro, how can I know what one user did in R/3 and what another user did? Is there a way for the users of the web dynpro to use their R/3 credentials so SLD can access the R/3? Like dynamically configuring the SLD for each user?
- I would like to avoid leaving their their passwords open in the code ( configuring two variable to get the users username and password and use these variables as JCO username and password )
Thanks Ubergeeks,
GuyHi Guy
You will have to use Single Sign On to achieve this. In the destination you have defined to connect to R/3 , there is an option to 'useSSO' instead of userid and password. This will ensure that calls to R/3 will be with the userid that has logged into WAS. You wont need to pass any passwords because a login ticket is generated from WAS and passed on to R/3. The userid is derived from this ticket.
For this to happen you will have to maintain a trust relation ship between R/3 and your WAS ,there is detailed documentation of this in help files. Configuration is very straight forward and is easy to perform

Question about setup_MITE in the PCI-MIO-16E-1
I have a quick question about setup_MITE in the PCI-MIO-16E-1. In one of the manuals, it states that if you're using Dell Optiplex GX series for our hardware configuration, is it true we need to re-write the MITE functions to correlate with the hardware? Please if you can clarify what this means, I would really appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

Question about size of ints in Xcode
Hello. I have a a few quick questions about declaring and defining variables and about their size and so forth. The book I'm reading at the moment, "Learn C on the Mac", says the following in reference to the difference between declaring and defining a variable:
A variable declaration is any statement that specifies a variables name and type. The line *int myInt;* certainly does that. A variable definition is a declaration that causes memory to be allocated for the variable. Since the previous statement does cause memory to be allocated for myInt, it does qualify as a definition.
I always thought a definition of a variable was a statement that assigned a value to a variable. If a basic declaration like "int myInt;" does allocate memory for the variable and therefore is a definition, can anyone give me an example of a declaration that does not allocate memory for the variable and therefore is not a definition?
The book goes on, a page or so late, to say this:
Since myInt was declared to be of type int, and since Xcode is currently set to use 4-byte ints, 4 bytes of memory were reserved for myInt. Since we haven't placed a value in those 4 bytes yet, they could contain any value at all. Some compilers place a value of 0 in a newly allocated variable, but others do not. The key is not to depend on a variable being preset to some specific value. If you want a variable to contain a specific value, assign the value to the variable yourself.
First, I know that an int can be different sizes (either 4 bytes or 8 bytes, I think), but what does this depend on? I thought it depended on the compiler, but the above quote makes it sound like it depends on the IDE, Xcode. Which is it?
Second, it said that Xcode is currently set to use 4-byte ints. Does this mean that there is a setting that the user can change to make ints a different size (like 8 bytes), or does it mean that the creators of Xcode currently have it set to use 4-byte ints?
Third, for the part about some compilers giving a newly allocated variable a value of 0, does this apply to Xcode or any of its compilers? I assume not, but I wanted to check.
Thanks for all the help, and have a great weekend!Tron55555 wrote:

I always like to think of a "declaration" to be something that makes no changes to the actual code, but just provides visibility so that compilation and/or linking will succeed. The "definition" allocates space.
You can declare a function to establish it in the namespace for the compiler to find but the linker needs an actual definition somewhere to link against. With a variable, you could also declare a variable as "extern int myvar;". The actual definition "int myvar;" would be somewhere else.
According to that book, both "extern int myvar;" and "int myvar;" are declarations, but only the latter is a definition. That is a valid way to look at it. Both statements 'delcare' something to the compiler, but on the second one 'define's some actual data.
First, I know that an int can be different sizes (either 4 bytes or 8 bytes, I think), but what does this depend on? I thought it depended on the compiler, but the above quote makes it sound like it depends on the IDE, Xcode. Which is it?
An "int" is supposed to be a processor's "native" size and the most efficient data type to use. A compiler may or may not be able to change that, depending on the target and the compiler. If a compiler supports that option and Xcode supports that compiler and that option, then Xcode can control it, via the compiler.
Second, it said that Xcode is currently set to use 4-byte ints. Does this mean that there is a setting that the user can change to make ints a different size (like 8 bytes), or does it mean that the creators of Xcode currently have it set to use 4-byte ints?
I think that "setting" is just not specifying any option to explicitly set the size. You can use "-m32" or "-m64" to control this, but I wouldn't recommend it. Let Xcode handle those low-level details.
Third, for the part about some compilers giving a newly allocated variable a value of 0, does this apply to Xcode or any of its compilers? I assume not, but I wanted to check.
I don't know for sure. Why would you ask? Are you thinking of including 45 lines of macro declarations 3 levels deep to initialize values based on whether or not a particular compiler/target supports automatic initialization? Xcode current supports GCC 3.3, GCC 4.0, GCC 4.2, LLVM GCC, CLang, and Intel's compiler for building PPC, i386, and x86_64 code in both debug and release, with a large number of optimization options. It doesn't matter what compiler you use or what it's behavior is - initialize your variables in C.
