Question about Pen Tool

Why does the Pen tool have feedback (ie. the "+" and "x" icons when near a shape etc.) only when starting to draw a path, but not after that?
For example, I have 2 parallel lines at some distance apart. With the Pen tool, I want to draw a path that unites their middles.
I click on the first line to set an Anchor point; then I keep drawing and setting Anchor points. But when I get near the second line, there is no more "feedback" on the Pen tool. So I don't know if my next Anchor Point I set will end exactly on the line (as I want) or "overshoot".
Is there any way to know?

Hmmm. I masked my actor. Hit the stopwatch on Mask Path, then went to the next frame. I added another keyframe and changed the mask to fit the new position but noticed it still changed the mask for the previous frames. I can't seem to figure out how to edit frames individually...

  • Simple question about pen tool in Flash vs Photoshop

    Hi,
After years of fumbling with the pen tool, I devoted my holiday weekend to mastering the pen tool in Photoshop. Though not necessarily a grand master of the pen tool, I'm happy to report that I've turned a corner and have transformed my pen tool feelings from fear/anger/hate into love/happiness/accomplishment. At long last, it all makes sense.
    I think.
Today, I zipped into Flash to experiment with a tracing assignment I'm giving to my students in an upcoming Flash class. As I started to trace the path with the pen tool, I realized that it was behaving differently than it does in Photoshop. My specific problem is this:
I place an anchor point and draw a line. Then I draw another line. Then I draw another line. Then, I decide to adjust one of the handles and try to draw another line. But it won't let me just go back to adding things to the path with the pen tool if any part of the process is disrupted.
This seems like pretty basic functionality! What am I doing wrong?
To make sure that I wasn't crazy, I went back to Photoshop and tried to do the same thing. It works just fine in Photoshop. At any time, I can hop away from the pen path and then back over to the pen tool. All I need to do to extend the path with the pen tool in Photoshop is to click on the last anchor point in the path. Surely, this must also be possible in Flash.
I would be grateful for any advice!

  • Question about Paint Tool

Is there any way you can control how fast the light streak preset for the paint stroke tool to move? Adjusting the layer's time length doesn't do anything and I don't see any speed options available. I want to slow down the stroke's travel across the screen. The Write-On option also doesn't seem to work when the trail I make lasts for more than 3ish seconds....it ends up not displaying anything.

If you look closely, the light streak presets use keyframes in the Color Over Stroke parameter in the Stroke section of the Shape tab. Go to that section and watch how the Opacity changes over time as well as the overall color.
Unfortunately, I was unable to trick it into going slower by using a behavior. It seems as if you can't add retiming behaviors to paint strokes. This means that if you want to slow it down, you'll have to do it the hard way.
Go to the Stroke section in the Shape tab of the inspector. Click on the keyframe button to the right of the presets (looks like a dash or a diamond) and select Show in Keyframe Editor from the menu. This will show you all the keyframes used in that parameter.
To lengthen, make sure the clip is as long as you want it and go to the end. Lasso all the end keyframes at the point they currently exist (frame 60 I think), and drag towards the end of the clip making sure to hold down the shift key so that their relative values don't change, only their positions.
Now do the same with the keyframes in the middle (at frame 30) and drag them to the current middle. In my case I made the 2 sec effect last for 3 secs. So I dragged the end keyframes to frame 90, and the middle keyframes to frame 45.
That will slow down the effect for you.

  • Question about bone tool

    Hi!
I am new at Flash and I have a problem. I've looked around in many resources, but cannot find any solution.
I’ve made a running man (you can see it in attached FLA file or in my homepage http://www.idealex.lv/prewiew/) using BoneTool. I would like to know is it possible to avoid man’s legs going below the ground line? Is it possible to make movement of the lower part of the leg fairly horizontal?
Thank you very mush for any answer and sorry for my poor English.

    >...is it possible to avoid man’s legs going below the ground line?
Well you could either move the man up a bit until his legs barely touch the ground. Or move the ground line down to achieve the same effect.
    >Is it possible to make movement of the lower part of the leg fairly horizontal?
In the animation the lower leg is a little quirky at times so, in those specific frames, just SHIFT-drag to position it in the correct pose without affecting the rest of the man.

  • Questions about the content of download meeting recording .zip file

I tried posting this on the resurrected Connect forum, but my Adobe ID wasn't recognized there....
Concerning the files that are included in the .zip file of the meeting recording that can be downloaded:
    1) Is there any documentation describing the files and their contents (i.e. what each file represents, what each XML element and attribute in those files represent)
    2) Are there any files that capture mouse movement on a shared desktop?
    Thank you!

    Hi Sean,
    Regarding your first post:
Thanks Jorma! I don't have access to an FMS build at the moment but I'm quite certain it's there. As for contacting Jaydeep, I am 90% sure he authorized us to broadcast his email on here if folks had questions about the tool, but, in the case that I'm wrong and he didn't - I'm going to double-check first.
    Regarding your most recent post..
"To be clear, the most critical goal I'm trying to accomplish is to create an automated process that will download the recording meeting at its highest quality in a consistent and reliable manner".
I personally believe this is possible; unfortunately, I haven't seen it done yet. If your recording contains:
    - audio
    - a camera feed
    - screensharing
Then I think you might be able to get this going. If it contains shared content, like a shared PPT, this gets trickier.
"To do this, of course, I have to reproduce some of the functionality that Connect provides, starting and combining video and audio streams according to the instructions in the control files."
Exactly right. If your recording didn't contain shared content, then all you've got on your hands are a bunch of audio/video files that you could edit together as you wanted with your favourite video editing tool. If it contains shared content, here's (at a high level) what's happening.
For shared PPTs or FTContent files:
First (for version 9 recordings only), Connect reads the information on the Shared Content's location and SCO within mainstream and indexstream and validates it before loading it. I don't recall this happening to the same extent with version 8 or earlier, but maybe it was. Now, if the content is validated (ie. Connect can find it) the share pod will display as black, if it doesn't, you get an empty pod with an message like "No content is being shared" or something like that.
Connect then looks at the actual FTContent file, and loads the content that is to be shared using the file path and sco ID listed in here. It's important to note that the SCO ID and file path in here will likely not be the same as the original file you uploaded to your room, it's a new SCO id (I believe SCOs of this type are called referenced scos) and new path.
Now...if I was going to build some sort of player which would play all these files in one screen to make a recording...I might not want to use Connect's code here. If you know the file path to the shared content (from FTContent), you could easily view it with the content URL (conveniently also in FtContent). I'm not a coder, but I'm envisioning something like Presenter's GUI where you've got the presentation's content in the main area, and a video file (if there is one) playing back on the side.
Anyways, food for thought if you want to try to go about this. Connect recordings are incredibly complex and they come with a big learning curve, but if you can make sense of them the knowledge is quite valuable.

  • Question about the animated Pen tool

    Hi,
ive a question about the animated pen-tool.
i draw a word, but my hand isnt very calm, so the result is what you see on the screenshot.
Is there a possibility to reduce the points on the animated pen tool like in illustrator?
i know in illustrator its possible, but i didnt found anything in after effects to do it.
    thanks for your help

If you are using the Paint tools those options don't exist in After Effects. The only work around is to set a keyframe for the brush path, copy the keyframe, then go to Illustrator and in a blank document the same size as your layer paste. Once in Illustrator you can simplify the path, select it, copy it, then go back to After Effects and select the same keyframe then paste. If you get a mask instead of a new path delete the mask path, make sure you have only the original brush path keyframe selected, then go to Edit>Paste from the menu.
It doesn't look like you're drawing a mask path. That might be a better way to go.

  • Question about using Pen Tool on more then one frame...

I have a scene where the actor is running towards the camera; I want to key an explosion behind him. I duplicated the shot and put a keyed explosion in between the layers. I used the pen tool and marked around the actor. I hit "add" on the drop down and the explosion showed up. Looks fine...
Now how do I animate the actor over a long period of time? I can't figure out how to add a different pen tool mark for each unique frame.
    thanks for any help!

Hmmm. I masked my actor. Hit the stopwatch on Mask Path, then went to the next frame. I added another keyframe and changed the mask to fit the new position but noticed it still changed the mask for the previous frames. I can't seem to figure out how to edit frames individually...

  • Capture with new MBP, plus Pen Tool Question...

Good Day everyone, I've searched the forums but have not been able to find my answer so I thought I'd post.
    Question 1...
I've just received my new 17"MBP a few weeks ago. With my old PB, I would connect my camera via FW400 and capture the footage to an external LaCie drive via FW800 out of the computer.
Now with only one FW port on the MBP, it looks as though I need to capture via FW800 (4pin to 9pin) and go out to the LaCie via USB? Is this correct? How are any of you doing this. It bums me out that I can't go out FW800 to the drive. I suppose there is always the option of getting an Express Card 34 with FW800 connections?
    Question 2...
Why can I not get my pen tool to work in the timeline? I want to adjust opacity and audio levels but am unable to do this. My old version of FCP (v5) seemed to let me do this. Overlays are 'on'? Any suggestions? I find it easier and faster to be able to do these functions from the timeline, there must be a way?
    FYI...
    New 17" MBP 2.66 w/4GB RAM
    FCP (Studio2)
I'm sure question 2 is just something stupid that I just haven't set up.
    Appreciate everyone's help as always!
    Rene.

To be honest, nobody but Apple knows what Apple is thinking but usb is not a good alternative. I also don't know of too many professional post houses or broadcast studios that have anything to do with firewire infrastructure at all. You can get firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter cables for cheap, search the internet. You can then daisy chain your camera/capture device in line with your storage device.
The better alternative is to get a express firewire card for your MacBook pro as you mentioned which would create two firewire buses; one for capturing, one for storage. Again, you can search the internet and here's a place to get you started http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/FW800E34/
I guess I would have thought maybe some research into a product of the expense of the MacBook Pro would have warranted some research about these things.

  • Pen Tool newbie has some questions

I put off learning how to control the Pen Tool far too long, but recently, I dug in & spent about 4 hours getting the hang of it. After about an hour, I had the basics, so I decided to practice on a complex outline. I spent several hours outlining a very intricate object with great precision. The tool was set on Path. What I did not realize is the Path I was creating was not being saved when I saved my work. It completely disappeared when I closed the file, much to my dismay. So obviously, I missed something in the instructions. Here are my questions:
    1. How should I have saved my Path?
    2. My goal was to complete a complex outline & use it for a mask or selection to remove the background - to extricate a complex object from a complex background. Was Path the best setting for this goal? What if I had used Shape, or Pixel Fill?
I really loved the control the tool gave me, like a digital Exacto knife, but would appreciate some suggestions to help further my exploration of the Pen Tool.

"I dug in & spent about 4 hours getting the hang of it."
That should be enough, for one day that is. Keep with it. Use it often over the next few years. Take on jobs that need paths. You will find the pen tool to be one of Photoshop's most valuable tools.
    Best,
    Ken

  • Pen Tool Question...

The Pen Tool is my favorite / go to selection tool. But can it do the following...
I've made a path and converted it to a selection, then filled the area with a color or texture (on it's own layer).
Now I find that I need to adjust (fine tune) the shape I've created / filled with color or texture to better fit how / where it's being used. Is is possible to invoke the path handles and get it to adjust the filled area as you move / adjust the path. (This is not a shape, not using the shape tool.)
I can select the filled path / layer and free transform but that does not give me a fine enough adjustment.
Puppet Warp doesn't really fit the bill either.
A good example of what I want to achieve is similar to when you put type on a path. When you adjust the path the type moves to conform to the changes in the path. I want to do the same thing with the area I filled using the path.
    Possible??
If not, this would be a great feature request!!!
    thanks folks for any input

Just to follow up on your answer....
Yes this works very well for what I'm trying to accomplish.
    Thanks again.
Just an fyi, I'm also a NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) member.
I posted my same question on the NAPP forum. I still haven't gotten a response for anyone over there.
I'm not knocking NAPP, it's a great organization and I've been a member since 2006.
But I'm pleased with how much faster answers to questions come from this Adobe Photoshop forum.
    Keep up the good work!!
