Question about showing jpeg metadata in lightroom

Hi,
I have briefly gone through the sdk material but there are some aspects that remained unclear to me. In more detail, I would like to show the RegionName tag from jpg-file in the LR metadata for searching etc. This tag includes the face recognition data from Picasa. I have already experimented with the exiftool and know how to add the names in RegionName to Subject or Keywords tag in both jpg-file and corresponding .xmp file for the raw-file. However, I would like to find an elegant solution by showing the tag in the LR directly. Before trying the make the LUA code, I would like to understand some basic principles behind the plugin programming namely:
1) How do I read the RegionName tag from the jpg-file and in which part of the plug-in? Is there a way to make LR read it every time the "Read Metadata from File" is used?
2) How do I "publish" it to appear in the Metadata panel on the right side of the LR (this is somewhat handled in the examples even though I do not understand the com.adobe.xxx reference i.e. which structure is it actually referencing to?)
Any comments and help is welcome on this or any advice where to find the information!

Mikko,
LR provides access only to some metadata fields, not all. RegionName is not one of the fields LR knows about, so you won't be able to use the SDK's metadata methods to access or display it. Typically, plugins that want to access such metadata run the free Exiftool on the images and then parse the output of Exiftool.
The ExifMeta plugin exposes all metadata that's accessible by Exiftool as custom metadata fields in LR. I suggest you try out that plugin to see if it meets your needs. If it doesn't, you can examine its source code as an example of how to use Exiftool to access and display metadata. The plugin's author Rob Cole is a frequent contributor to this forum and quite willing to answer questions.

I suspect there are potential issues on some systems with the Google "combined" version, when I installed it I had recieved a copy of the Google complete version free because of my purchase history. I was advised that I could install over the Individual Plugins I had. I never got as far as trying it with Lightroom, only in Elements. The plugins appeared but the load times were abysmal and I mean realy bad , far longer than the Nik individual Installs, so I dumped it and reverted to the originals. Pity cos I wanted the Sharpen Plugin that I have'nt got. After reverting all was back to normal The Nik individual Plugins load very quickly. It was this that convinced me there is a difference in the Google setup.There are people on here with far more knowledge than me, hopefully one of them can help you, alternatively you might try asking Google for help with this.

Quick question about showing drive space

Hi,
Just got a quick query about showing remaining drive space on the desktop.
Before I wiped my Pismo and reinstalled Tiger (bad kernel panic), my hard drive and any other connected drives (pen drive, iPod, iDisk, etc) showed up on my Desktop with the name and drive capacity and remaining space underneath the icon.
Now I've reinstalled, the drive capacity and remaining space don't show up on the Desktop, and I can't find how to turn it on. I've been through Preferences several times and can't find an obvious switch. Have I missed something? I'm running Tiger 10.4.8 with the machine spec below.

Sometimes, for no obvious reason, the Finder can be slow to update. And sometimes it updates instantly. Why? "Only the Shadow knows...." or maybe the Apple programmers.

Question about show task's info

i try to implement netweaver ce ehp1's bpm amd had some question.
how to access tables of bpm's data base? because i want to show the history or info about the process, such like who sign, how long the task spand or how many job should do.
if i should create another db, such like caf systom, to record the message, how to sync data when i have to close end the process from database(back)?

Hi Vic,
I am sorry to say but its not possible to extract data out of BPM internal tables to generate a custom report (KPI) in the current version. This functionality is limited to the Process list viewer and the data is stored internally and there are no APIs available to access the same. You will be able to see some new features related to this in the upcoming Netweaver 7.2.
If you want to achieve the said functionality, then you have to go for creating a custom EJB functon to record details at each step and then use this for creating the report.

Question about saving JPEGs in Photoshop for use in FCP

Ah, Mr Stupit here, I don't see anywhere else to ask, and since the pics will be used in FCP I"ll try here.
In photoshop I rotated the pics to get the figure upright for ease of handling in FCP, and now I'm asked to save the pic and I'm given the choice of Baseline Standard, Baseline Optimized and Progressive, with Baseline Optimized being the default. Usually I go with the default, but now I figured I'd be clever and ask the geniuses here what they think: Which should I go with?
Another question, am I losing some quality by re-saving this JPEG? I don't want to get into whether I should save as Tiffs, I find my FCP struggles with such large sizes and I'm happy with the JPEGs. Of course, maybe that's why I'm Mr Stupit.

The problem when I save them as tiffs, png, etc is they become really large and when I open them in Viewer or place them in a sequence I have to wait and wait while the little balls spins. I'm thinking that maybe I'll just use the original JPEGs and rotate them in the Canvas. As long as I don't re-save them there shouldn't be any difference in quality between using them in FCP as opposed to re-saving them as Tiffs, etc, and then using them in FCP, right?
Sorry, but someone on another forum said just using JPEGs in FCP will result in a loss of quality though why should an untouched original somehow lose quality by being placed in an FCP timeline, I don't get it nor did I get an explanation.

Questions about converting from Photoshop to Lightroom

Hi! I have been a Photoshop user for many years now, but after a lot of thought, reading many reviews and much reccommendation, I have decided I would like to buy Lightroom! However, I have absolutely no idea how I go about doing it. I thought it would be simple but after looking into it, people have made it seem much more complicated than I thought. SO, here are a few qustions which I hope somebody can answer!
1. Do I already need a version of Lightroom before I can buy Lightroom 4 or 5?
2. Do I buy it on a disk, or do I download it off the Adobe website? Which is the better option?
3. I'm currently on windows 7, however I'm going to be buying an iMac next year. Will I have to buy another version of Lightroom next year? Or can I install it on multiple devices?
4. Why is Lightroom 5 so much cheaper than Lightroom 4 on Amazon? (not the update versions)

The Upgrade from a previous version is a lower price, but the upgrade price should clearly say UPGRADE.
If it says FULL version, you won't need to own previous versions of LR

Question about creating JPEG still from movie clip?

The aperture help says that a frame will be copied as part of a stack .. But I do not see this to be the case. When I make a frame from a movie, I don't see ANYTHING different in the browser window. Please help!

Yes, you can do that, but it's a little difficult to advise
you the best way with the information provided:
Can you clarify:
Do you want to play the main clip while the thumbs continue
to load... or do you want to preload the thumbs, then play the main
clip, then do the tweening when the main timeline reaches the end?
This way is easy enough.
If you want them to continue to load and then do the tweening
at the end of the main timeline (e..g with a stop() on the last
frame) then its also not complicated, but you need to cover the
situation where the loading of the thumbs may not yet have
completed by that time (perhaps the risk is low if the timeline is
long, but its a sensible thing to address regardless).
Also consider whether you want anything to be hidden (i.e.
_visible=false) at any point - e.g. before the thumbs have finished
loading.
As a starting point I suggest you would probably put the code
after
removeMovieClip("thumbLoading");
and before the last curly bracket (" } ") in a separate
function on the main timeline, e.g.
function tweenThumbs(){
//code here
(its actually not easy to be sure, because I can't visualize
what exactly it does)
what you would do next depends on the answers to the above
questions.

Question about RAW+JPEG in LR 1.1

Hi,
I just want some information on how LR handles the JPG+RAW files.
1- When I look at the picture in LR, do I see the JPG or the RAW? (because the JPEG I get from my D50 is more punchy than the RAW, so I want to know which one I see)
2- When I want to modify the photo, do I work with the RAW by default (I suppose)?
3- Can I choose which one I'm looking at or working on?
4- Let's say I haven't got the time to work on the RAW and I need to send the pic. Can I decide to export the JPEG (with the punchy colors)(and resize it) or LR will automatically export the RAW?
5- Is there any advantage (in 1.1) to use old way (separate folder for RAW files, to have both in LR) than the new JPG+RAW capability?

Here's some info regarding this from Mete Atamel, engineer on the LiveCycle Data Services team:
When shared-backend=true, a single consistent view of data is guaranteed but this is not due to the shared-backend property itself but rather the fact that when shared-backend=true, there's a single DB used by multiple instances of LCDS.
Imagine the scenario where you have two LCDS nodes in a cluster with two data management destinations, one on node1, and one on node2, and they are clustered (via JGroups). You can have those destinations maintain their own DB, and when a change happens in one node¹s destination, the other node's destination gets a JGroups message and updates its own DB. This works but it's not ideal because at a given time, you¹re trying to maintain the same cluster state on two different DBs and there are times when the connected clients do not get consistent view of the data.
Instead, you can use a single DB and have the two destinations talk to the same DB, so you have a single consistent view of the data. When this is possible, you enable shared-backend property in LCDS destinations, that way when one destination updates the DB, and sends a JGroups message to the other destination, the other destination does not try to update the DB again, instead it simply passes the update message back to the connected clients without sending it to the adapter.

Questions about OutLineLoad utility (metadata)

I need to check out whether it matters if csv load file has column header like " Plan1" or should it be like "Plan Type (Plan1)". Another example could be "Aggregation Plan1" vs "Aggregation (Plan1)"?
Do this kind of things reject metadata loading to a custom defined dimension like "Product"?
Does the location of OutLineLoad utility matter when running the utility from the command prompt? Usually the OutlineLoad utility can be found in the Planning/bin folder, but in this case the utility is stored into other folder in Planning server (version 11.1.2 ??/quite new version).
When trying to run the utility I ran into error message like:
“Unable to obtain dimension information and/or perform a data load: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: oracle/dms/context/ExecutionContext”
Any idea what does this mean? Is it due to csv file column header errors or does it refer to something else?

The column header should be "Plan Type (Plan1)" and "Aggregation (Plan1)"
What I suggest is starting out with a simple load file maybe with just Parent and member e.g. Parent,Account
And then one record of data.
A example of the location to run the utility from is :- <MIDDLEWARE_HOME>\user_projects\epmsystem1\Planning\planning1

Question about "show snmp mib"

Doing "show snmp mib" lists all the instance identifiers on my Cat2950, one of them is "c2900PortDuplexState".
c2900PortDuplexState has OID 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.87.1.4.1.1.31.
When I do snmpwalk from my host, I get the OID numbers from the switch.

This means the Cat2950 knows it's instance identifiers and also the OID #'s.
So is there an IOS command that shows the OID #'s? I think there is "snmp get" on newer platforms?
And is there a host tool/command like snmpwalk that can get the instance identifiers, like "c2900PortDuplexState", without any MIB's?

Questions about using Lightroom to import my pictures..

Hi.
My main use for Lightroom is picture import, as it does a superb job on arranging my pictures at import time, but I have a few questions that maybe you guys can answer.
First and foremost, my camera has that orientation data, but somehow the image file that ends up on my hard drive is always vertical (i.e. 3264x2448) even though there are pictures that are shot horizontal (i.e. 2448x3264). Is Lightroom capable of importing the pictures already rotated, or is there a setting that allows that? (Note that the pictures INSIDE Lightroom are shown rotated, but I'm talking about the JPG file stored in my hard drive)
Second, how can I set up Windows Vista to display Lightroom as an option to import pictures when I insert my card or connect my camera?

Let me see if I understand your rotation issue. It seems that you shoot jpeg (using which camera?) and that the images show correctly rotated in Lightroom but not in another (unspecified) application.
Does the software that came with the camera show the jpeg properly rotated? (I'm certain that it does.) What software doesn't show proper rotation? Windows Explorer? You would not want Lightroom to physically rotate the image on disk since that would violate it's non-destructive editing rule.
Lightroom has a preference setting that allows the import dialog to be shown when a memory card is detected. Avoid importing directly from the camera and use a card reader.

Question about metadata filtering and document sets

I have a question about the metadata filtering when using document sets.
When i use the metadata filter for example for "Installatie: P00001" it shows.
But i wan't to show only the document set and not all the documents. Is this possible OOTB?

You can add the "Content Type" in Hierarchy Fields for your list, then click the "Document Set" to filter the document set type item, then you can input the "P00001" in Installatle key filter, click apply, then it should show only document set
items with field value P00001.

I have a tricky question about metadata and iTunes Match!

Here's my question:
I have purchased some content from the iTunes Store, most of it classical music (although that's not so relevant for my question). The Store metadata is generally poor, so for every purchased item I changed the metadata to suit my tastes (for example, all albums by J.S. Bach have "Bach" as artist, instead of the performer, which is the default in the iTunes Store).
I have read some nightmare stories about metadata reverting to the original iTunes Store metadata, when subscribing to iTunes Match.
I have also understood that iTunes Match does not change the metadata stored locally on my HD.
So here is my question, which is twofold:
1) Say I bought a song by the artist "John" on the iTunes Store. On my library, I changed the artist field metadata to "Jeff". Now, I subscribe to iTunes Match. Naturally, it will match my song to the one on the Store. On my iPhone, will my song appear under "John", or "Jeff"?
2) In the same setting, after subscribing, will I still find this song under "Jeff" on my local library? In other words, what will change in my Desktop experience with iTunes?
If having bad metadata when browsing my music on my iPhone is the price to pay for having all my music at my disposal anytime, I won't mind. But if iTunes Match messes up all my hard work getting my library just right on my Desktop, then I have to pass.
Can you guys help me make a decision?

It's all classical, and I also standardized names of composers, performers especially when there were multiple ones, and a ton of other stuff. Whatever matched, iTunes just upped and erased that, and used the title, artist, and whatever else from the store."
This is *exactly* what I don't want to see happening! However, I could not find any other reports of what he describes. What do you think?
