Question about working on different computers on a project?

I'm going to have video footage stored on an external Firewire 800 hard drive and I'm going to work on a project in a lab that has 30 different Macs, so I will not always be working on the same computer.
Do I need to change any settings each time I get on a new Mac or will the project file always open up the media each and every time I double click on it or open it in CS6?
Thanks.

1. When you say you assign a unique drive letter for each external, do you mean you are simply naming the hard drive itself so each of your externals shows up with its own unique name OR are you referring to something else?
In Windows, all drives are deliniated by "drive letter." This is set in the OS, and is part of that absolute Path, such as Z:\[Project Name]\Video. When I get a new external, I set it's drive letter in the OS of each computer and then add a label to it. In Windows, each HDD, whether internal, or external, has an I.D. number, and if one has set the drive letter, when the OS sees that I.D., it knows what to do. I started with Z:\, and worked backward. As my workstation has a bunch of HDD's, I ran out of drive letters, and just started over. However, that means that I cannot have both of my Z:\ externals hooked up at the same time. That, however, is not a problem, as I have each one marked, and they have unique Projects on them, so I should never need both Z:\'s at the same time. Mac's do things a bit differently, and I am certain that I would get it wrong, so will let a Mac-user discuss that with you.
Again on Windows, if one has NOT set the drive letter, then the OS will assign one, and that will depend on the existing drive letters used on the system, and the order that any external devices are plugged in and turned ON. As a for instance, let's say that I plug in that Z:\, into a computer where it has not yet been set to Z:\, it will usually be assigned the next drive letter, for that computer, so it might be F:\, and then my absolute Paths are broken, since they point to Z:\.
Good luck,
Hunt

    Video DVDs are in the UDF format. The disk image you created is in the UDF format. When you use Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media, the new discs will be in UDF format and all will be well.
    You are doing things correctly.
    BTW, unless you have an external burner with lots of cooling, if you expect to use the burner in your Mac (which DOESN'T have lots of cooling), it's a good idea to pause between discs to allow the burner to cool down. (BTW, this comment is based on the reported results of several people in the forum. If you don't allow the cool down timer, you will start to create 'bad' discs. Also it is VERY important that you reduce the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower in order to create discs with maximum compatability with players. (You should see a way to change the speed in Disk Utility afterr you have inserted a disc.)

  • Question about upgrading iTunes multiple computers with shared library

    Greetings,
    I have a question about upgrading to the current version of iTunes.
    Currently, my household uses 3 Mac computers (2 Powerbook 17in laptops and a Mack Mini). We are all (currently) on system 10.4.11 (with iTunes 9.2.1). Between the 3 computers we have a shared iTunes music and video library on a networked high capacity hard drive.
    We recently purchased an iPad. In order to make it easy for updates and to use media from our iTunes shared library I decided that we should upgrade the systems on our home computers to Snow Leopard. I have ensured that all the computers have at lease 2 Gb of RAM and adequate hard drive space.
    The only possible problem I see is that one of the Powerbook laptops uses the old Motorola processor. (This is one of the last Powerbooks to use that processor.) I don’t think this computer can be upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    My question is, if I upgrade 2 of the computers (and iTunes in the process), will I still be able to access the shared iTunes library using the older computer with the older system and iTunes? Will the upgrade process change the iTunes library in such a way that the one older computer will no longer be able to properly access that library?
    Are there any other problems I might encounter having a mixed system/iTunes environment?
    Thank you,
    Tim

    Just a thought. Should I somehow open iTunes on MBP2 using MBP1's Library file??
    both Macs can access the same library file, however, only one at a time !
    to do that, you would ideally have the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) on the external. then, on one Mac after the other, launch iTunes while holding the option key, click on +choose library+ when prompted, and select the iTunes folder on the external.
    or, you could have two separate libraries and keep those in sync using third party tools such as Syncopation, TuneRanger or SuperSync.
    for purchases from the iTunes store, you could set up _*Home Sharing*_ - it can be configured to automatically transfer new purchases to home shared libraries.
    Can I create a script to have MBP1 always save the iTunes Library file on the shared hard drive?
    no need.

  • Adobe Presenter: working from different computers transferring files

    I am using Adobe presenter. I need to work from home, so have copied my powerpoint and all its associated adobe presenter audio files from one location to another. I used to be able to do this without problems. However, it seems I'm no longer able to do it: I open powerpoint and go to the adobe presenter toolbar and try to record more audio and clearly the system shows no audio is associated with this file. Getting out of adobe presenter makes the system delete the folder with associated audio files (it seems it is not linking them properly, but still recognising them as adobe presenter audio files and deleting them as if to start recording from scratch).
    Can anyone help? how can I work on the same files from different computers without losing the data (or the links) in between?
    Regards,
    Gabriel

    Hi folks
    One way to achieve this easily is by using DropBox. This will create a folder that you sync to the cloud. Then you create a Dropbox on the second computer and whatever you change and save is automatically updated and transferred to the other computer keeping them in sync. Works really well.

  • Family sharing music who work on different computers

    hi everyone,
    here is the question, which will start with a long explaination.
    my desktop computer is the "main" computer of the house. i have about 35,000 songs on it in my itunes. everyone in the house (wife & son) uses my music (which is everyone's music) for their entertainment. when we buy music (either online or the physical cd) it's downloaded on my computer and into my itunes. my wife has a few songs on her itunes on her computer and my son is going to get an ipod touch and will start purchasing songs for that on a separate computer. so, we will have 3 computers that will potentially be purchasing different music. in addition to the 3 computers, i am relocating to a different city for work and will be commuting back and forth when i can. my question for the community is, how can we all share our music? since my son hasn't gotten his ipod touch yet and my wife doesn't have anything on her itunes yet (all of her music is on my computer and in my itunes), would it make sense for everyone to share my ID and password and then either email or dropbox purchased music (and imported music) to each other or is there a simpler, easier, better way to do this? i understand that we could share everything if we lived in the same house but since i'll be in a different location, i'm a bit stumped on how to make this work.
    any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    brian

    There are three ways to address your dilema:
    1) Most expensive and difficult to set up: Media server like the HP EX series ($500) and a VPN (virtual private network) capable router (~$150 to $200). All media goes onto the server. All PC iTunes are set to point to the Media server instead of the default folder on C:\   As new files are added to the media server the iTunes set to point to it will also 'see' the new files.   There are additional setting that have to be made but that's the overview.
    2) Cheapest and easiest to set up: NAS (Network attached storage) (~100 to 300). Like above all media goes onto the NAS. All iTunes are set to point to the NAS instead of the default folder on C:\  The disadvantage of course is that you will not be able to share your stuff or have access to the stuff on the NAS until you come home and resynch everything.
    3) Middle of the road: NAS and a VPN capable router.  The only real disadvantage here is that a NAS is pretty "dumb" and is slower than a media server. Especially if more than one person is using it. They also rely on the router explicitly for security since many do not have an OS to run security software. Some of the more elaborate NAS's do but when you start talking more than $200 I would consider a home media server instead.
    Hope this helps.
    P.S. your account and password (iTunes store) will be needed for anyone that wants to use media that you've purchased regardless of which method you go with. The DRM license is stored on each individual computer that accesses it.

  • Question about working with an audio interface

    Hi
    I just bought an audio interface (tascam us-122l) and i have logic express 8 installed, so i've connected my guitar and my keyboard (via MIDI) to the audio interface, and i've read the user's manual but i still don't know how things work...
    Is it possible to use the built-in speakers on my imac as a sort of "amplifier". So when i play on my guitar or keyboard, i can hear what i'm playing trough my imac.
    This is what i did so far;
    - installed the drivers and updated the firmware
    - system preferences > sound > input and clicked on my audio interface (US-122L)
    - LE8 > preferences > audio > devices > and i selected the US-122L as device
    This might be a stupid question but i just want to record songs.
    Thnx anyway.

    Logic audio preferences assumes you want to use your interface as an output for monitor speakers - the standard way and the best way given that your internal spekers will be neither loud enough or good enough to act as great monitors. If you don't have speakers you will be able to hear what you have recorded through headphones connected to your interface. If you want to listen from imac speakers or audio out you do indeed need to change to "built in input" - this is just a name logic uses to refer to your imacs internal sound card (including input and output).
    To separate the input and output for different devices you need to set up your aggregate device, which you should be able to do, though you say you can't.

  • Question about syncing two different iPads on 1 iMac?

    Hey all, I bought two iPad 2's today (both gifts, 1 for my mom and 1 for my dad). Bought it for them because they're probably too old at this stage for me to teach them to use a desktop efficiently. iPad is so easy for them to use the internet and listen to their music which is most important.
    My question is, I don't have an iPad myself nor any iOS devices. Maybe I'll buy an ipad in a few months or so. However I do own the only computer in the house and that's my iMac. I was going to sync both my mom and dad's iPads to my Mac, and put their songs from my iTunes library on their iPads respectively. Will I incure any problems trying to do this?
    I don't want my mom and dad's iPads to be identical and I want to sync different pictures and songs and stuff on their ipads. I want it to be their own individually.
    What steps should I take to do this? I've never really synced any iOS products before but I pick up on this stuff pretty quickly. Made the transition from a Windows desktop to a Mac easily and would do it all over again!

  • Question about compiling with different jdk's

    Hi, I have a questions which I can't find an answer for.
    If I compile my program with jdk 1.6, will some1 be able to run it
    using jre 1.5 ?
    a) Assuming I don't use any 1.6 new features
    b) Assuming I use 1.6 new features.
    Btw. I would check myself on other computer with jre 1.5, but right now I can't :-(

    Thank you for your reply.
    So when I use 1.6 jdk, I can compile my program with
    these flags and
    I'll be able to run it on the specified release jre
    ?yes, unless the system is broken in the beta of course.
    In other words there is no way that an app compiled
    without these flags,
    worked on older jre ?yup. Though some betas might default to generating classfiles for 5.0 runtimes by default (some 5.0 betas generated 1.4 classfiles for example).

  • Question about syncing between two computers

    I feel a bit silly, because I feel as though I should know this, but I'm not sure because it has never applied to me until now.
    My main computer is a Vista machine, and everything is sync'd with that. However, I bought a MacBook last night (WOO-HOO!) to use as a secondary machine, and I'd like to get all of my contact and calendar info into that machine as well.
    I'm envisioning the following scenario:
    1. I will put at least one contact and at least one calendar event into Mac Mail and iCal in my new, empty MacBook...
    2. I will connect my iPhone to sync with the MacBook and iTunes will offer me the magic "merge" option.
    3. All of the information in my phone will be sync'd to my new MacBook, and I will have two computers and an iPhone all with the same info.
    Are there any holes in my vision? Will this work?
    Thanks,
    -SB

    This should work as provided.
    If something goes wrong with the sync process with your MacBook and this data is lost on your iPhone, you have your Vista machine with this data to recover from.
    If you aren't already doing so, be sure to create a backup of this data on your Vista machine - contact information and calendar events - which should be done when syncing any device such as an iPhone with such important information stored on your computer.

  • Unix Domain Socket - Question about work around

    Since Unix Domain Sockets are platform dependent and Java is platform independent, it does not support it.
    However, I am sure some of you have worked with them and found some good work around.
    Elsewhere Jtux was suggested as a possible fix. However, I have not seen any good testimonials to it working. Also, if there are any security issues with this software. The website is here: http://www.basepath.com/aup/jtux/
    Does anyone have any other suggest?
    Thanks.

    I am modifying a current app. I must use the Unix
    Domain Sockets. I have no choice in the matters. It's
    for security reasons that they must be left in place.I can only guess that you do not understand my suggestion.
    The proxy does a domain socket to regular socket - just a pass through. You write this in C/C++.
    In your java app, as one option, you use Runtime.exec() to start the proxy. Then you use a java socket to connect to it. You can pass options to the proxy to control the socket behavior on both ends.
    In terms of usage there are a number of variations on the above.

  • Question about "MDM-many different models, Part 2"

    Reading this article on SDN by Roman Rytov, I don't quite understand the concept of the informal MDM scenario which is called named "Data Hub".
    What is the difference between Data Hub and Harmonization or Centralization exactly? Is the Data Hub scenario supposed to mean that source systems access master data directly from MDM (i.e. no local copy of the data in the source system, MDM holds the only copy of the master data)? Or does the scenario mean something else?
    Thanks for any clarification,
    Lars

    > Reading this article on SDN by Roman Rytov, I don't
    > quite understand the concept of the informal MDM

    Hi Lars,
    Thanks for reading the article. But before I explain the difference in the scenarios I wanted to point out that the article is not official and though I work for SAP the article reflects my own opinion and vision only.
    > What is the difference between Data Hub and
    > Harmonization or Centralization exactly? Is the Data

    > mean something else?
    I see not the difference but a kind of clarification. CDM and MDH don't specify explicitly how external systems behave after MDM gets to the picture. It just says that the data can be consolidated and then distributed back. The so called Data hub insists that data flow occurs only through MDM and the systems stop talking between themselves directly. Another important aspect is data delivery. On one hand it's out of the MDM scope but on the other hand robust data delivery mechanism and comprehensive exception handling have to address the current level of MDM functionality and hence relay on MDM as well as on XI.
    In the article I mentioned that the scenarios are not formal and probably require better wording. All I aimed to share in the article was concrete scenarios being implemented today by cusotmers in real projects as complementary approaches to the marketing oriented standard scenarios.
    Hope now the confusion vanished.
    Best,
    Roman

    Hey I'm new and would love some advice.

  • Question about writing out different types...

    hi, i have a need to write out records that correspond to the following format:
    String, 25 bytes
    long, 8 bytes
    long, 8 bytes
    int, 4 bytes.
    for the long and int types i need to write out the actual bytes of these
    numbers, NOT their string representation. I have to write this out quite often
    in my program, and it is being written to a file so I would like to buffer it. The
    problem is, I don't know how to do that.
    I would like to be able to get the above 4 data elements and append them to
    a byte array. Is there an easy/fast way to do this?
    I really appreciate the help!

    For primitives, use a DataOutputStream, my problem is now how to output them, its how to
    output a lot of them. if i use
    the DataOutputStream (which i am currently doing), i
    have to make these calls
    over and over:
                   DOS.write(/*some String*/);
                   DOS.writeLong(/*some long*/);
                   DOS.writeLong(/*some long*/);
                   DOS.writeInt(/*some int*/);but in my program i have to call this, literally,
    millions of times. I ran a profiler
    on this program and found that most of my time is
    spent in this function. Either it's spent in converting the values to bytes, or it's spent in writing those bytes to disk.
    I doubt you'll be able to significanly speed up the conversion to bytes. If so, I don't know how.
    You might be able to speed up writing the bytes to disk. If you're not using a BufferedOutputStream around your OOS or DOS, you should be.
    Side note: I think you can actually use OOS for both primitives and objects, so if you have a mix of the two, it might be better to just use the one OOS.

  • Help me with some question about Worker/Service/Task in JavaFx 2

    I have read some articles in the forum adout mutithreading in JavaFx2, and now I know if I want to do some long-run jobs, i should use Service/Task.
    But my application needs a function like this:
    1. here is a long-run job(something like getting data from database or other resources);
    2. If I clicked a button, then the job started and get the data.
    3. When the job is done, I show the data in the tableview of my JavaFx application.
    4. then the job waiting some random time(such as 100 seconds).
    5. then the job started again automaticlly.
    so, the steps are 2->3->4->5->3->4->5->3->4->5->........
    so, the important things is that the job runs many times automaticlly.
    I know I should implements the job as a Service or Task in javaFx, But where should I put my "while(true){ job.start();sleep(random_time);}" loop code to make the job start automaticlly after some random sleep time.
    I wonder what is the best practice for this use case.
    My english is poor, but i hope you can understand what i'm dealing with.
    Thank you very much!

    Hi,
    Based on the response from John,
    I think you can acheive the functionality as below.
    // Creating the tableview.
    TableView<Person> personTable = new TableView<Person>()
    // Instantiating the personlist.
    ObservableList<Person> persons = FXCollections.observableArrayList();
    // Setting the list to the table.
    personTable .setItems(persons)
    final Button button = new Button("Refresh");
    final Timeline repeatTimeLine = new Timeline(
          new KeyFrame(Duration.seconds(100), new EventHandler<ActionEvent>() {
                @Override
             public void handle(ActionEvent event) {
                    // Call the service method to update the list.
                       PersonService.updatepersons(persons );
    button.setOnAction(new EventHandler<ActionEvent>() {
         @Override
         public void handle(ActionEvent arg0) {
                 repeatTimeLine.setCycleCount(Timeline.INDEFINITE);
                 repeatTimeLine.play();
    });And in the Service class...
    public void updatepersons(final ObservableList<Person> persons){
              final Task<List<Person>> getPersonTask = new Task<List<Person>>() {
              @Override
              protected List<Person> call() throws Exception {
                   return getPersonService().getPersons();
         getPersonTask .stateProperty().addListener(new ChangeListener<State>() {
              @Override
              public void changed(ObservableValue<? extends State> arg0, State arg1, State newState) {
                   switch (newState) {
                   case SUCCEEDED:
                        persons.clear();
                        persons.addAll(getPersonTask .getValue());
                        break;
                   case FAILED:
                        break;
         ThreadManager.getInstance().schedule(this.getClass(), getPersonTask );
    }I hope this code can give you some idea.
    Happy Coding !! :)
