Question and confirmation on upgrading to 500gb hard drive

First of all, I'm sorry to post another HD upgrade thread. I just thought I should post a new thread instead of stealing the other...
I am considering upgrading my hard drive. I currently have 160GB, but it is just not cutting it. I have been doing alot of researching and studying to eventually do the upgrade myself. This is what I have found out so far and please correct me if I'm wrong anywhere.
1. I am planning to buy this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD5000BEVTU4/ which includes the external enclosure.
2. I would also need #00 philips screwdriver and T6 Torx screw driver (of course, I will follow the exact instructions from here http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/MacBook-Pro-17-Inch-Core-Duo/Hard-Drive-Replacem ent/87/8/Page-1
3. I just wanted to verify one thing. What about my current data? I guess I'll have to use either CCC or SD, but how do I exactly do that? Do I install the new drive into the enclosure and connect via firewire, and clone the old HD to the new HD? Then, take the new HD back out of the enclosure and replace with the old HD in my MBP? If you see the link for the HD and enclosure, it says this "Install the new hard drive into your computer, and put your old drive into the included OWC Mercury On-The-Go external case! Transfer your data back to your new drive and you're all set!" What is this? Do I just disconnect the old HD without saving anything onto anywhere? What is the right way of swapping HDs?
Am I headed in the right direction? I'm quite confident that I could change the HD (read the instructions so many times...), but I just wasn't sure what I would have to be careful with when cloning the data since I haven't even seen either CC or SD yet...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You are on the right track. Good choice with OWC. Only suggestion I would make is to buy two 320GB HDDs unless you absolutely need a 500GB HDD. The cloning is very simple. What you can do is buy an enclosure from OWC with a drive in there already and clone directly from your 160GB to the external OR use time machine to make a backup to the external. Then put the separate drive in the computer and start up with the Leopard DVD and follow [these instructions|http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/time-machine-hdd-swap/the-secret-of-the -time-machine+assisted-hard-drive-swap-333319.php]. You are going to restore from a Time Machine backup.
Technically if you take the drive that comes in the OWC enclosure you void your warranty but it's fine. Depending if you buy the same HDDs for the internal and enclosure you can then just place what was just cloned into your computer and you would be ready to go. Then you can put the remaining drive in the enclosure, format it as GUID in disk utility, and set it up with time machine (if you are using Leopard).
The reason I say this is:
[OWC F800/400/USB enclosure containing a Hitachi 5k320 $129.99 after $10 MIR|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MS8U5320HB8>
or
[OWC F800/400/USB enclosure containing a Hitachi 7k320 $147.99 after $20 MIR|http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MS8U7320GB16>
I don't know if you want 7200RPM or 5400RPM in your internal HDD, but I would recommend 7200 in the external. Buying the Combo 7k320 drive is cheaper than buying the enclosure without a drive preinstalled and then buying it separately (plus you get a few utilities in there).
As for your internal drive it is up to you. Only reason I'm suggesting buying two drives is one obviously for backup should be larger than your internal in most cases. Having a 500GB internal and 160GB external for backups doesn't make sense.
You may want to compare prices and take a look at [Newegg for 7200RPM/5400RPM drives that are 320GB/500GB|http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&Subc ategory=380&Description=&Type=&N=2010150380+1035915133&srchInDesc=&MinPrice=&Max Price=&PropertyCodeValue=359%3A15133&PropertyCodeValue=3097%3A33643&PropertyCode Value=3097%3A40009&PropertyCodeValue=355%3A7777&PropertyCodeValue=355%3A7776].
Also don't forget the [2% cash back|http://www.ebates.com/rf.do?referrerid=DMMneqKtzskNampKdYmMZA%3D%3D] if you buy from Newegg.

  • X220 upgrade to 500gb hard drive?

Has anyone upgraded their X220 to a 500gb HD? I see that the current 320gb i have is a "seagate momentus thin" drive and the space for the HD does not fit a standard thickness laptop drive.  Any input on whether there are HD's that would fit and if they would get me to the bigger drive i'd love to have?

I have one Hitachi Travelstar Z5K500 working in this laptop I am using now. Perfect match. The performance is no good as 7200rpm ones, so consider it first.
But it is not as bad as the storagereview benchmark. I guess they may forgot to align the drive since it is a Advanced Format one. I get a 90MB/s sequential write and 97MB/s sequential read normally.

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

  • After creating a new login (bought computer used) and deleting the old one the 500gb hard drive only shows up as 320gb.

So I've just purchased a mid 2011 Macbook Pro 13" used via eBay. Was advertised as having 500gb hard drive and 6gb ram. I checked the ram and it was all legit, checked the hd capacity and it was all correct as well. So I made a new login for myself and deleted the previous owner's. Now my hard drive shows up as 320gb. Even in disk utility and terminal.

One more place to look is SYSTEM PROFILER>HARDWARE>SERIAL-ATA.  If it says 320, you have a 320GB HDD which I suspect it probably will.  They are easy to replace.
    Ciao.

  • I've just upgraded to Iphoto v9.4.1 and cannot import photos from my hard drive

I've just upgraded to Iphoto v9.4.1 and cannot import photos from my hard drive. no matter what method I use, either click and drag or through the File menu. All I get is a message 'Preparing to import' - file size is less than 300 kb

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want to move those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again to another external hard drive 1T. My question is:

I had a windows laptop, and I save files like photos, documents, videos and other things on an external hard drive, and now I want tomove those files to the Mac book Pro, and then move those files again toanother external hard drive 1T. My question is: Is it possible? Doing this willnot affect the files that I had in windows? No information is lost? or how cani do it?

Connect the external drive to your Mac and drag the files from it to your Mac's internal drive. Then dismount and disconnect the external drive, connect the 1TB external drive, and drag the files from the internal drive onto the external. Nothing will have been deleted from any of the drives up to this point; the files will only have been copied. Verify that the files are readable. There's no reason they shouldn't be; this is just a precaution.
Now if you wish to delete the files from any of the drives, drag them to the Trash, and Empty the Trash while the drive from which they came is still connected. If you disconnect the drive before emptying the Trash, the files you were trying to remove from it won't be deleted. They'll remain in the Trash and continue to take up space on the drive.
Note that if your external drives are in NTFS format, you won't be able to write anything to them or delete anything from them, though you will be able to read and copy the files they contain. The NTFS disk format is read-only to the Mac OS, unless you have a third-party NTFS driver installed. To make your drives cross-platform readable and writable, you must reformat them in the FAT32 or ExFAT format.

Are you now using a different username from the one you used prior to migrating? If so that is the reason for the problem. You might, then, give this a try:
    To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

Whether or not you are able to recover the data off the drive yourself will depend on if the drive suffered any impact damage in the crash. You can buy USB SATA or IDE adapters (Intel and almost all G5 use SATA) that will let you connect your hard drive to a computer (like a flash drive) to see if you can recover the data. If the drive has suffered physical damage if may not mount.
If you know someone who has one of these adapters you could try using theirs, otherwise you could buy one but you take the risk of the data on the drive being non recoverable. Regardless, both are much cheaper than $1699!
(Alternatively, if you know of someone with a Mac Pro or PowerMac G5 they may be able to install the drive in their machine and try to boot from or mount it and copy the data off.)

Depending on the year of the MBP, the hard drive may not be considered a user replaceable item...but you can check the available 1 TB drives at good sources such as OWC, http://www.macsales.com they are great to deal with and have on-line videos showing how to do most installation tasks.

Yes the Mac can read that drive but you would need to Copy the data off of it to the Mac as apposed to Move, which implies Deleting them from the drive as they were transferred from the external to the Mac. Since the Mac can Not Write to NTFS drives it can't Delete anything as that is really a Write operation, IE Making changes to the NTFS formatted drive.
Once you have that Data on Both your New Mac and you Older Windows PC you can format that drive to work on both system.
If you want to and plan on doing that post back and I'll explane how, it is simple but should be done on a Windows PC.
If you only plan on using it on the Mac from now on that is fairly simple also and is done on the Mac, Once you have the files from it stored on the Mac.
Yes you could burn those photos to DVD but that is just a waste of DVDs, you don't need to.

  • About to upgrade my Macbook hard drive - what steps to ensure TM works?

I'm about to upgrade my 100Gb hard drive in my Macbook to a 320Gb drive and I was planning to use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone my existing drive to my new drive.
    Couple of questions:-
Will TM continue to work seamlessly or are there some tweaks I will need to do to get it to continue to work.
With the increase in size of my Macbook drive I probably need to increase the size of my TM drive for backup as well - can I just clone my current TM drive to a larger capacity drive or will there be tweaks required.
    Many thanks
    Mike

    Mike,
If you have a good Time Machine backup, you can just use that. You would install the new drive, boot to the Leopard install disk, then use the "Restore From a Time Machine Backup" utility. This restores your entire installation from the Time Machine backup of your choosing. Time Machine would then continue with the same backup where it left off.
Kappy will not agree with this, because he has not had the same success as I with Time Machine. For me, it has worked flawlessly, and I have used the above method several times to go from one machine to another, or to a new drive on the same machine.
I do recommend that you take a few precautions prior to trusting your Time Machine backup, however. First, I would verify the Time Machine volume with Disk Utility, to make sure there are no disk errors. Then, I would make a final backup and monitor it carefully. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console. In the Sidebar, under "Log Database Queries," select "All Messages." Then type "backupd" into the search field. Finally, choose "Backup Now" from the Time Machine menu.
Watch the progress of the backup in the Console window, and look for the presence of any potential errors. If nothing seems out of the ordinary, your backup should be safe to use.

  • How much does Premiere Pro and After Effects rely on the hard drive it's installed on?

This may be a really dumb question, but how much does Premiere Pro and After Effects rely on the hard drive it's installed on if all your video files, assets, disk cache, etc are on different drives than the one the program itself is installed on?
The reason I am asking is that I currently have a "relatively" slow Sata II SSD for my C drive that has just my OS (windows 7 64bit) and programs (adobe editing programs, no games) installed on it and nothing else. All of the files used in my projects are saved on either a very fast Sata III SSD or a slower HDD depending on what the files are. For example, disk cache on the Sata III, stills on the HDD.
Being cyber monday I have the opportunity to buy another very fast Sata III SSD to replace my current Sata II SSD C Drive (just OS and programs). Both synthetic and real world benchmarks show a near double in performance. I just want to know if anyone thinks the upgrade is even worth it because for all I know there won't be any increase in performance since no videos, still, cach, etc will be stored on the C Drive.
The alternative is to get a second monitor because I currently only use one 21" monitor.
I suppose another alternative would be to not buy anything on the cyber monday deals and just save money for something else.
Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks Alex! I think you are right about not being able to notice the difference between the SSDs. I ended up finding a deal to get about $80 off a great monitor that I've been looking at for a while and decided to pull the trigger on it. I thought about it and realized that there have already been a bunch of times where I want to watch a tutorial on youtube and follow allong in AE or PrePro, but have to keep switching windows. I also frequently want to have my video preview on a separate monitor so I can have a taller timeline window. This monitor will help a lot with that. Thanks again for your help!

  • Upgrading iMac Quad Hard Drive

I am finally going to place the order for the iMac 27 in Quad Core.
I am on the fence as to whether to stay with a 1TB internal or switch to a 2TB? I read somewhere that upgrading the hard drive is not a D.Y.I. Is this true? That would be a major bummer.
If I want to upgrade to a 2TB later on, roughly how much would an the Apple store charge me and does it matter if the hard drive was not purchase through Apple?
My iPhoto Library is growing and I also want to run Windows. Can I store my iPhoto Library on and external instead on the primary drive? How disk space would I generally need to install Windows?
Is a 2TB more like to fail than a 1TB?

The ideal solution is at least one & better two backups of everything important to you. How you do that depends on what's important & how much file space it requires. Nobody but you can determine that, but for example I favor one Time Machine backup plus one clone of my internal drive (which contains everything I care about).
The two backups are not equivalent. Time Machine archives every unique file, including those I delete or change, so I can for instance retrieve an early copy of a document I created a month ago or a version of it with changes made a week later. However, it is not a startup volume -- its files must be transferred to a startup volume to use them. It is in effect a series of snapshots of the startup volume at different moments in time. Because of this, it should be much larger than the startup volume for best results, or set to exclude some folders if that isn't practical. For example, because I typically store 8 to 10 copies of DVD's I own on my iMac for immediate access, I keep them in a folder I exclude from the Time Machine backup, since if anything happens to the copies I can make new ones from the originals, which are safely stored away elsewhere.
The clone is an exact copy of what's on the drive at one moment in time, so it does not let me retrieve an early copy of a document I have since changed. However, since it is an exact copy of the startup drive, I can startup from it if something happens to the startup drive. I can also use it to test things like updates or questionable OS hacks without risking the normal startup drive.
This works for me; something else may be better for you, especially if you plan on filling the internal 2 TB drive to near its capacity with unique files. Again, bigger is better -- the more capacity you have for backups the more options you have.

  • [Solved] Upgrading my current hard drive

    Hey guys
I'm having this MSI GE60-2OC which I find slow.
Last time I was seeking some advices on what I should upgrade, and I was adviced to upgrade my current hard drive with a SSD instead. I was recommended to go with a mSATA SSD, which is perfectly fine - however, I got one question.
Would it be a waste to get a mSATA SSD and then replace my current HDD with a SSD?
If so, I'm planning to buy the Samsung SSD 840 EVO mSATA 120GB and a Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB.
Is that possible? Would it be overkill?

You'll need at least two mSATA to have RAID 0, so it's not supported on GE60 2OC.
Just stick with the original BIOS you have and there is no additional settings needed in BIOS.
For how to do the OS installation onto the SSD, you can check on the post Svet share before.

"Burn and prepare MSI Recovery DVDs, then:
Disconnect/remove your HDD, and leave the mSata SSD installed only.
Then use the burned recovery DVDs to restore it over the SSD.
Once you can boot your OS from the SSD and restore is complete,
install again your HDD, and adjust boot prioroty 1st boot: SSD"
    How to adjust boot prioroty?
    1. After seeing MSI logo while booting up, press "Delete" button to enter the BIOS menu.
    2. Use keyboard to move to "Boot" tab.
    3. Set SSD to the Boot Option #1.
*You need to change the Hard Disk Drive BBS Priorities if you can't find your SSD in the Hard Disk item.
