Question of State of Java RTS

While reading recent Java blogs and the likes, I stumbled across a [post on improvements to Java|http://paulhammant.com/blog/at-least-one-unilateral-improvement-to-java.html]. In it, it mentions a [presentation |http://www.adacore.com/wp-content/files/attachments/PaperPresentationAE2006-Brosgol.pdf]comparing Java and ADA, that talks about concerns about Java in the RTS sense in context of DoD 178B.
It indicates the need for "named parameter" and related concerns.
Since this presentation is a few years old...I am curious, are these concerns still true? Would these be suggestions for improving Java RTS?
Eric

The presentation is not very old - only 2006. The concerns are still true as the Java language and the RTSJ have not changed - neither Java or the RTSJ are compliant with DoD 178B. As the presentation indicates a new JSR (now known as JSR-302) was put together to define "safety-crtiical Java" which is a subset of Java and the RTSJ. There are different levels in 302 and depending on the level different language/runtime/API features are disallowed. JSR-302 is still under development.
Re the comment about "named parameters" - Java doesn't have them and is not likely to ever have them. They prevent certain classes of programming error from arising eg: method declared as foo(int x, int y) and is accidentally invoked as foo(my_y, my_x) thus passing the parameters in the wrong order. Named parameters require the call to be made as foo(x=my_x, y=my_y) and so the order is irrelevant. It's hardly foolproof though, you can still do foo(x=a, y=b) when you should have done foo(x=b, y=a).
Edited to add: Having just read that blog entry I don't think he's talking about the same kind of "named parameters" - at least I couldn't recognize them from the blog.
Check out JSR-302 via the jcp.org website for more info.

    Hello,
    Just a quick question: can we have an official position from Sun regarding support of earlier releases of Solaris with Java RTS 2.1? Our customer is currently running Solaris 10 Update 3 with current Recommended patches, and the 2.1 beta cyclic driver supported this version of Solaris. However with the official release version of 2.1, support for U3 disappeared (only U4 and U5 are now supported). Aside from "rubber stamping" the Solaris build via /etc/release, is there a technical reason why U3 is no longer supported? As long as our kernel is up to date, can we safely use 2.1? Or is it just a case of being unable to officially support and test so many releases of Solaris?
    Is this a general rule-of-thumb we can expect in future: only supporting the last 2 updates of Solaris 10?
    Your advice is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave.

  • Convert a logic from SQL statement to java

    Hi.,
    I m using jdeveloper 11.1.1.5
    I had used one sql statement as gievn below
    (SELECT max(decode(LENGTH(fy_year),4, fy_year + 1,6,SUBSTR(fy_year, 1, 4)+1||SUBSTR(SUBSTR(fy_year, 1, 4) + 2, 3, 2)))YEAR from fin_years)I need to use this logic in java
    Could anyone pls help me

    "wilhelm,"
    I've seen some ridiculous questions in my life. This is one of them.
    There are just so many things wrong here. So, so many.
    SELECT statements get data from databases; they are not "logic."
    Do you really expect us to parse your SQL and try to guess what it is supposed to do?
    Do you really believe that when converting a Forms app to Java that you "convert" SQL statements to Java?
    Do you really believe that going through your forms app and "converting" it to ADF is a sensible approach?

  • How to Dynamically construct the conditional IF statement in java

    Is there a way to dynamically construct a conditional IF statement in java?
    For example:
    Suppose i have a 2D array like:
    Array[the actual values to search for][the column number in the table to perform the search on].
    e.g.
    Array {
                 {"x"} , {1},
                 {"y"} , {2},
                 {"z"} , {3},
    }How can i construct the if statement like:
    Looping over table rows (tableRow) {
        Looping over array {
            IF ( {"x"}. equals( tableModel.getValueAt( tableRow, {1})   &&
                   {"y"}. equals( tableModel.getValueAt( tableRow, {2})   &&
                   {"z"}. equals( tableModel.getValueAt( tableRow, {3})  )
            return true;
    }The array can grow or shrink based on the values in it so therefore IF statement will grow or shrink. How can i achieve it?
    If not then how can i achieve this?

    My understanding (feeble at best) is that a sieries of && elements will be evaluated in order until the first false value is encountered. So, in an "if a && b && c" statement where b is false c will never be evaluated and the conditional executable will not run. Is that what you mean?
    Yes, logical expressions will not evaluate unnecessary operands. So you can safely write the following, for instance, without getting an error,
    if ((anArray != null) && (anArray.length > 0)) { ... }because the second operand of the '&&' will never be evaluated if 'anArray' is null.
    Also, is there a difference between & and &&?
    & is a bitwise operator, && is a boolean operator.

    its executing ??? Look at reply #3 in your other thread:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=713289&messageID=4126346
    Notice the similarity? You've now asked "How to delete a record in Java" and "how to execute a select statement in java". You may have noticed that, aside from the SQL and the call to execute and executeUpdate (for delete) it's the same code. This is because you don't so much do these things in Java, you do them in SQL. The Java code simply asks the Driver to execute whatever SQL you write. So, I really hope your next post isn't "how do I execute an UPDATE statement in Java".

    I would like to embed interactive widgets in iBooks using iBookAuthor. The widgets in question started life in Java but GWT has allowed them to be converted to javascript and to run on web pages (for example, http://softoption.us/content/node/437 scroll to the bottom). In theory, iBookAuthor can bring in most html5, and much javascript. The technique is to wrap the html in a folder, with 2 extra files, a plist and a default png and then change the extension of the folder to ‘.wdgt’. This is the technique for making Dashboard widgets for the Mac, and Apple even have the Dashcode software to do it. So what you really do is to make a Dashboard widget, then iBookAuthor can import it.  So far, so good. And some  folk have been doing this, for example http://www.prweb.com/releases/2012/2/prweb9242432.htm http://www.panophoto.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=10417&p=158330#p158423 However, if you start with GWT and create a single page with one button and a Hello World, compile it, and get the WAR file (I use Eclipse here)… the Safari browser and others will run it properly (even on an iPad). Then if you wrap it, a proper Dashboard widget is created, which runs properly on a Mac. Then if you go to iBookAuthor and put a custom widget in the Text, then drag it in. It is accepted by the text and shown as being there. However, if you use Preview to look at it on an iPad, it is gone (or was never there in the first place). Anyone any ideas on this? [And iBook Author seems to give no warnings.] The widget is at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/46713473/Test6.wdgt.zip I have bells and whistles that I’d like to get into an iBook!
    Thanks for any insights.
    Martin

    I do have a little to add, which might help someone. Indeed, opening a blank page and dragging the widget straight in seems good in difficult cases. But, actually, I was also able to insert successfully from the Toolbar especially to blank pages. So, it may have been something to do with the columns and stuff like that. Anyway back then the insertion would show in iBooks Author but not in the Preview on the iPad. I moved on to actual Google Web Toolkit output javascript. Basically I had three at hand to try: a Hello World with a button which went straight it, one of moderate complexity, (for example with a built in Lisp interpreter), which also went straight in, and finally a more complex one that initially was rejected by iBook Author. Author complained that there was an unsupported media file (of course, Author does not tell you which one it is, that would be too easy). [Remember, this was a proper working Dashboard widget which could be installed on a Mac]. Among other things I had read remarks about .gif files. When looking through the GWT war directory at the actual javascript etc files, I noticed there were two gifs there one called ‘clear.cache.gif ‘  and a second one called  ‘0F89659FF3F324AE4116F700257E32BD.cache.gif’. (Now, there is obfuscation so the numbers here may be different from case to case.) The clear.cache.gif did not seem to be anything special. But the other one is an animation. It is three little boxes that twinkle (rather like a waiting spinning cursor).  So, I opened that file and saved it to itself (that picks the top frame of the animation and saves only that, leaving you with an unanimated gif). The resulting widget drags and drops into iBooks Author (and seems to work properly at a quick glance). So, if you are having trouble with ‘unsupported media files’ converting animated gifs into unanimated gifs might help in some cases.

  • INSERT statement in Java and MS Access

    Hi all,
    can anyone please tell me how to insert data to an MS Access table using JSP i tried INSERT statement of java but it is getting errors saying INSERT statement is wrong. I have no idea about MS access insert statement. i am totally tired of this. Please someone help me.

    Hello,
    MS Sql can cause problems where it goes off standard, however I dont think insert is any different.
    INSERT INTO table_name (column1, column2) VALUES (variable1, variable2)
    Make sure your table and column names are exactly right, Java is case sensitive, so make sure the case is correct also.
    The other common error is if you have a required field in the database that is not populated by your program, so, if for instance there was a column3 in the table for the above example, which was a required field, the sql would fail as there is no data being entered for column3.

    hi
    you can write a java class for DF.
    an instance of DF class have some EF objects.
    for example,
    samples/com/sun/javacard/samples/JavaPurse/CyclicFile.java
    implements ISO 7816 CyclicFile ( EF )

    Hi Nikita,
    Welcome to Workshop!
    The JWS classes used in Workshop are essentially Java classes with the
    additional capability to understand the JWS metatags in the comments.
    Hence you can use the import statements in the same manner as you use in a
    normal Java class.
    Please do let us know if you have any further queries.

  • How to isolate the Sql Statement from Java Code

    Hi
    I Need to know that can we segregate the Sql Statements and convert them to Stored Procedures so as to isolate the Sql statements from Java Code.
    So i have one static web page which uses four select Statements so what i want is to create a stored procedure encapsulating these queries. So that the Java Web Developer will simply call the Stored Procedure instead of using four different SQL Statements.
    Suppose the developer has these four Statements
    Select ename,empno,sal,job from emp;
    select empno,ename,mgr from emp;
    select deptno,dname from dept;
    select emp.ename,emp.empno,emp.deptno,dept,dname fromemp,dept;
    So can i encapsulate these four Sql Statements in one Procedure and the Web developer can call the Store procedure and dont need to write the Sql Statements in his code.
    Can Anybody guide me how to write this Stored type of Store procedure.
