Question On 16x9 Aspect Ratio

I set Easy Setup to DV-NTSC Anamorphic and captured my 10 hours of underwater video from Mini-DV that was shot in 16x9 (not HD).
I then created my video, including stills, title text etc.
When I watch my project, my titles and still pictures take up my entire 16x9 widescreen monitor as well as my widescreen TV. The video, however, does not take up the full widescreen. There are black horizontal bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
What am I doing wrong? How can I make it so that the video also takes up the entire widescreen display, like the stills and the titles do?
Thanks for any suggestions... Brad

Thanks for the reply.
The camcorder is a Sony DCR-HC30. I checked the manual and it says "You can record a 16:9 wide picture on the tape to watch on a 16:9 wide-screen TV. With this function ON, your camcorder offers even wider angles when you move the power zoom lever to the W side than recording in OFF". So I believe it is recording in real 16:9 anamorphic.
I checked the item properties of a video clip (not in the my final sequence) and it says:
Frame Size is 720x480
Pixel Aspect is NTSC-CC12 601
Anamorphic is checked
Composite is Normal
I checked the sequence properties and it says:
Frame Size is 720x480
Pixel Aspect is NTSC-CC12 601
Anamorphic is NOT checked
Composite is Blank
When I watch the sequence on the Canvas this is what happens:
Video appears 16:9 with black bars above and below
Photos appear 4:3 and full screen
When I watch a video clip (outside of the sequence), video appears 16:9 with gray bars above and below.
When I export to iDVD for burning to DVD, I did the following:
File / Export / Quicktime Movie
Markers set to None / I tried both self contained movie checked and unchecked
I told iDVD to make a 16:9 project.
When I play the DVD on my widescreen Toshiba LCD TV the following happens:
Video appears 16:9, looks great but has black bars above and below.
Photos look great and take up the entire 16:9 screen.
Any thoughts? I really appreciate your help!

  • 16x9 aspect ratio quicktime movie switches to 4x3 in idvd

I have a quicktime movie that has a 16x9 aspect ratio. In Info the dimensions show up as 720x480 (853x480) and when opened in Quicktime it is opening in the correct aspect ratio it was created. After bringing the Quicktime movie into an idvd project that was set up for 16x9, when I click on the movie, it shows up as a 4x3 movie, and the images are noticeably distorted. Any ideas on how to resolve this? Thanks.

A solution is to use something called Anamorphizer that sets the file's widescreen flag so that it is recognized as anamorphically squeezed widescreen.
    Get Anamorphizer at http://homepage.mac.com/sith33/FileSharing34.html
Make sure Quicktime 7 is open before you try Anamorphizer. (NOTE: You MUST use Quicktime 7 and NOT Quicktime X)
Place a copy of your movie clip in a new folder and drag that clip over the Anamorphizer icon. This should create a second file in that folder that start with Anamorphic- This is the reference movie you drag-and-drop into iDVD. Note that your clip in that folder (which is the movie the reference movie points to, must not be moved or deleted).

  • Losing 16x9 aspect ratio after compression

After exporting an anamorphic 16x9 DV (standard def) sequence to Compressor and encoding with either H.264 or mpeg 4, my sequences end up being squeezed and not having the 16x9 aspect ratio.
    - I make sure I click, "correct for pixel aspect ratio" in the viewer. I pull up the Geometry tab in the Inspector and there I get confused.
For preserving the 16x9, what do I set the following in the geometry tab?
    Source inset:
    Dimensions:
100% of Source? or one of the other options in the pulldown menu?
    Output image inset:
I have been successful in the past with encoding 16x9 sequences but something has changed and I have no idea what it could be. Have tried just about everything.

I work 99% in DV anamorphic and all my Applications are set this way. It bothers me however that I lose my anamorphic aspect ratio when I export from FCP to Quicktime movie. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
No, you're not doing anything wrong - this is a quirk in the way that FCP writes anamorphic QT movies when using the DV codecs.
As you've discovered, the flag is not recognized by QT Player unless you export via QT Conversion and either set the display size manually or, in QT 7.1.0 or higher, select 16:9 output in your Movie Settings.
    Sorry if that's no help...

  • Trouble with DVCProHD 16x9 aspect ratio in iDVD

I'll probably get flamed for this, but I've scoured the discussion boards and read thru the manuals and I just cannot figure out what the problem is or find the right answers. Okay...
I shot a short with the Panasonic HVX200 in 720p24PN. I cut the film in FCP 5.0.4 and would like to export it to make a DVD with iDVD 5.0.1. (Note: this is not the final version of the film I'm going to be making. I simply need to make a copy of my rough cut to give to my composer). I exported a Quicktime movie using the "current settings" and unchecked the "make movie self contained" box. I created a project in iDVD, dragged the QT movie in and burned it. When played on my computer and my DVD player displayed on my 32" HD widescreen TV, I get small bars on the right and left and the image is squeezed giving it a squashed from the sides picture. So my first question is, can iDVD 5 create a DVD from this source material and maintain the proper aspect ratio (16x9) or is the software too old? In other words, would I have to upgrade to iDVD 8? Or am I missing a step in the process that fixes this? Or is it a case of a plain QT movie not being the proper tool? Do I need to export it using QT Conversion or Compressor and make the aspect ratio custom? I have messed around with this and I don't seem to be getting the magic numbers here. I have a feeling I have the right applications, but I'm mixing and matching the wrong ones to achieve my goal. I know the people I'll be giving the rough cut to will view them on widescreen TV's so I'd love for it to play in full 16x9 for them.
Thanks in advance for your help!

I didn't really feel it was a specific iDVD question since so much of the work begins and involves what you do in FCP first. I posted the question in that forum as well, but I'm just wondering if this is a common situation or rare. Doesn't seem like it would be a rare situation, but that's why I'm asking. Is what I'm trying to do too advanced for a "consumer" grade program like iDVD. And that's not meant as a slam on the program. Anyway, enough about me. What about me?

Once you've exported your QT Movie (using the same method as before), open it QuickTime Player (7.1 or later) and confirm that the Conform Aperture property is set correctly. (Actually, from what I remember of FCP 5.x, it did not set that property for QT exports at all.)
For DVCProHD material, the setting you'll want to use is Production, which should adjust the display size to 1280x720 (from the current 960x720). Encoding with Compressor or DVDSP after that point - be sure to save your changes in QT player, of course - should produce the correct DVD-Video image.

  • Tryin to keep 16x9 aspect ratio & down resize for Qt encoding ?

    Hi all,
Im trying to take my sequence clip resolution thats at 1440x1080 (16x9)
and do a QT conversion (keeping the same 16x9 AR) and bring it down, so as to send the file in an email. I want to keep the aspect ratio
I did the division by 2 and the division by 4, but its coming out 4x3 ?
I'm sure Im doing something wrong here.
Im looking to get the 16x9 clip down to around 360-ish, give or take.
    Any formulas
    Thanks to all replies

    Yo Patrick,
    Compressor.
(I'm referring to the latest Compressor here ... an earlier version might be slightly different.)
If you use Compressor it is SO easy. Export your HD clip to Compressor. In Compressor in the Batch Window click the 'setting' and choose (down at the bottom) the Web 'size and format' you want.
In the Inspector window click the 5th icon over from the left (at the top) and choose 'Constrain to display aspect = 16:9'. You can also juggle and fine tune your clips details in the Inspector window.
Back in the Batch window set your Destination\Source to the folder you want to store you new Web clip in.
Click Output File Name and rename your clip to what you want.
    Click submit.
Your web clip will be 16:9 at whatever size you've chosen.
    Best of luck,
    Ben

  • A Little question about Pixel Aspect Ratio

This doubt has been bugging me since I started edit HD formats. It's about pixel aspect ratio.
Let's supose I have received some material in HD format, for instance. But I will deliver this material in another format, DV NTSC,for instance.
The Pixel aspect ratio format of the material what I received and the way how I will deliver are different. What can I do to avoid this problem? Do I need to apply some plugin to solve this problem or when I export the final sequence Final Cut does this automatically?
    thank you

The software takes care of it for you.
As long as your conversion maintains the overall aspect ratio (ie 16:9), it is irrelevant what the individual pixels are doing.
For example, if I convert DVCProHD 720p to ProRes 720p, it will look fine even though the DVCProHD started out with 960 pixels in the x dimension and the ProRes will have 1280.

  • 16x9 aspect ratio lost after FCP export to QT movie

I initially complained about the same problem when exporting from Motion to QT movie, then importing in FCP. This was fixed, and I really enjoy it.
I work 99% in DV anamorphic and all my Applications are set this way. It bothers me however that I lose my anamorphic aspect ratio when I export from FCP to Quicktime movie. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
I hope this will be fixed in the next patch as it waists a lot of time correcting it manually. I often export from FCP and into QT Pro, fix aspect ratio and then off to the web. If anyone knows of a better way, I would appreciate the help.

  • Preserve 16x9 Aspect Ratio

Hi - I am trying to create a wmv file using the current size of my show (720x576). I can make an anamorphic version but I'd like to preserve the 16x9 proportion for my client. How can this be done?
    Thanks very much!

Are you saying you want to convert it to square pixels?
If so, you'll need one of the higher level versions of Flip4mac. I don't believe the basic Pro version allows for custom settings.

  • 16x9 aspect ratio life's mystery ???

While doing transcoding (in AE) I wondered why half quality of 1440x1080 is 720x480 and not 720x540.
Does anyone has the answer to this puzzling question ?
    Thank you.

I have to assume that since HDV is 1.33PAR, they decided that half would be DV AVI size, and therefore instead of going to square pixels. they went to the standard 0.9PAR that DV uses.

  • Question about aspect ratio...

    hey all,
Just got my Apple TV last night and I'm loving it so far.
My question is about aspect ratios and "filling up the screen". When I watched some documentaries and some episodes of "The Office" (from iTunes Store) - the rntire TV's screen was used and looked beautiful.
However, when I watched the latest episode of "LOST" from iTunes, it was having big black areas to the left and right of the 4:3 content in the middle, and I was unable to choose any "stretching" or "panorama" effects using the TV's remote as I do with normal non-HD TV signal usually.
    a) Am I doing something wrong? and/or b) are the iTunes TV show sizes and aspect ratios different from different shows?
    Any help appreciated...
    /// martin

HDMI and DVI do have signal length limitations. it is digital, so should result in a perfect reception of any transmitted signals... if it works at all, including error checking / dropped packets. i generally choose component over HDMI / DVI for medium to long runs, just because it is the only real option without using very expensive cabling or active repeaters / transcoders. usually we are running lots of component video sources anyways, so just go with component all the way around. HDMI / DVI is used for local sources, right adjacent to the TV, only if it is very convenient.
Here is my beef with HDMI:
    1) the HDMI consortium took a perfectly good format, DVI, and ruined it with DRM controls... it takes from 15 seconds or more for the handshake to arbitrate, leaving users with a black screen as they switch sources.
    2) unprofessional connector that easily falls out... up there with the people who designed the S-Video connector - acually worse.
    3) incomplete initial specs and now various emerging specifications and lackluster adherence to the specifications by different manufacturers...
    4) completely random and unexplicable incompatibilities between different sources, displays, cables, and switchers.
    5) the licensing arrangement that the HDMI consortium has for manufacturers to pay money for the right to use.... a revenue generating function that has sort of took over the reason for the consortiums existence versus advancements in consumer electronics technologies.
i think that DVI/HDMI is better, but that has to be qualified. the current output thaty ou see on set top boxes and Apple TV is highly compressed. in the case of the ITMS, most of it is not even "DVD quality" yet, let alone "close to DVD quality". this is a limitation in the content, or ITMS selection of content, more so than the architecture of the store.
asking whether HDMI/DVI is better than component with respect to Apple TV is like asking if it is better to use an Apogee Digital DAC versus a Radio Shack DAC when listening to MP3s at 64kbps. in other words, don't think about it too much.
the 10% of people that are having problems with HDMI can probably eliminate most all problems by switching over to component and don't need to fret over image quality.

  • Crop tool Aspect Ratios

I have question regarding the Aspect Ratios of the crop overlay tool. Lr comes with a number of crop aspect ratios - for example 5x7, 16x9 and 16X10; where 5 and 16 apply to the width, and 7, 9 and 10 apply to the height. There does not seem to be a way of creating customer aspect ratios like 7x5, 9x16 or 10x16. If i try creating 9x16 Lr, says it 16x9 and does nothing.
Is this by design? Am I missing something?

    Just one more question about this: why do 4x3, 16x9 and 16x10, default to 1024 x 768 pixels, 1920 x 1080 pixels and 1280 x 800 pixels? I have enough pixels to do a 16x9 crop with 6016x3384 pixels.
I am skeptical of this statement. When you select 4x3, this means a 4x3 aspect ratio, and not a specific number of pixels
Fully agree with you but this how my crop aspect ratios look like; I can assure you that if select 16x9 it automatically defaults to 1920 to 1080 pixels. I am assuming that the custom ratios are below "Enter Custom ...".

  • Choosing aspect ratio in iMovie

Hi, I have been importing video from mini DV and also the mini VHS cassette tapes. My question is, What aspect ratio should I be using for this? I have been choosing 4.3, because, most of it is from 1999 to 2005. My thinking is that, the widescreen format was not around at that time. Thanks for any tips or information on this matter, I appreciate it!

Thanks, yeah I figured. I haven't noticed any issues.
So, what about iPhone footage...that would be 16:9 correct?

  • Video asset in button cropped - Unable to match aspect ratios

I am using the Apple "Light Frame" button and linking an mpeg2 video asset to that button to look like active, mini 16 X 9 plasma televisions for my scene selection menu. Unfortunately it insists on cropping out much of my mp2 video image. Following the instruction in DVDSP4 manual on pages 275-76 only moves my image L to R and never shows me the whole image. The same seems to be the case using the "Light Frame" drop zone template. Am I completely going about it using the wrong method? How can I successfully match the aspect ratio of both the button's area and the associated asset?
Thank you for helping this poor forum newbie!
    Dual 2.5 PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   2.5 GB SDRAM

I have found that if I drag & drop a video asset to the menu and select "Create button and track" then I can correctly resize the thumbnail video to fit inside the frame of the button template while keeping the 16X9 aspect ratio. That works out very well except for the desired animated effect of the "Light Frame" television turning on and off becomes covered. Does anyone know of a better solution for creating a television thumbnail menu effect?
I'm new to this and would appreciate any help available. I've searched the forums over and found no posting on this.

  • Pixel Aspect Ratio and ciphering type of footage-CS6

    CS6- updated 12\18\13  V-11.03
    Hi All,
    A few questions about:
Pixel Aspect Ratio and ciphering type of footage. Bare with me as I touch on two different aspects of what I feel are related:
    1. Setting up a Comp-
Having AE decide on the correct footage being used- Via >Import footage,.(to Folder) then drag it on, or into the 'make comp icon' where AE is supposed to do a 'best guess' for the comp settings. Be it square pix or otherwise. What are the second value in brackets ? See pic
    2. Interpolation-
When using two diff footage sources- If using two different source footages in a comp. Is this where I should interplolate my footage to match the existing footage and the comp settings (If I have choosen NOT to pre-comp that secondary footage?)
    3. Seperating fields-
How come footage that a camera manufacturer claims to be shooting in Progressive 30 or 24p is showing up as interlaced in my comp's CP? The manual to the cam says 30p or 24p or 60i The footage was shot at 30p (for sure)
Here is a screen grab of AE's 'best guess' of that footage, showing it with an UPPER field render; indicative of HD Interlaced footage and then in the inerpolate settings - 'kinda confirming it.
Now for the way out- Render:
    4. If that is in fact Interlaced and I then want to reduce the size of that 1920 footage to 66% size... Do I need to do anything in particular at this point?
For some reason I am getting an error on my end when trying to export as an AVI and reducing size to 1280
    5. Is this from the Field render of interlaced challenge?
I ended  up with a couple of errors and then aborted the whole file and re-imported to start over with this error. Which happend again after a redoux
So I sent it over to Prem Pro to export those MTS Files as a movie and noted AGAIN the reference to Interlaced video. "upper and lower" Prem Pro was able to use the same MTS files and export a working movie. (so those files were not corrupt BTW) Yet Note PP's output reference to that footage again as Interlaced would be...
Thanks for any clarity on those "5" questions... NC

    Thanks for the details Rick.
Thanks for the insight on  #1
Ref #2, You should never change the interpretation of Pixel aspect ratio on footage  unless you know for a certainty that it is wrong. For example, open Photoshop or Illustrator and create a new document that is 720  X 480 pixels and AE will always interpret the image as rectangular pixels because that is a standard rectangular pixel frame size.
Unless you specifically created the image in Photoshop with rectangular pixels it is square pixels so the interpretation must be changed to avoid distortion.
    --Did you mean to write:
Unless you specifically created the image in Photoshop with SQUARE pixels using  a rectangle layout?  I am not trying to bust your blz here, I am trying to understand the unknown. (for me)
So it may very well be AE mis-guessing the footage and the Upper first is a mistake on AE's part and I need to test it to find out? On that note...
Ref#3, Separating fields must be done right. Some 1080P footage is interpreted as having fields. This may be incorrect and if there is a question you MUST test the footage. Test the footage by making sure that the fields are being separated
How do I make sure the fields are being seperated? Does the window as in pic two from the top of my post confirm that or is there another test?
    Then I do the following:
then selecting the footage in the project panel and choosing Create Composition from Selection, then opening the Composition settings, doubling the frame rate and stepping through the footage a frame at a time. If the footage is really interlaced then each of the frames will be different.  (IE:  29.94 to 59.94fps) OK
If the field order is reversed then motion will be in the right direction then reverse, then go back to the right direction. ---I did not understand?  Are you referring to Upper and Lower reverse?   Direction, as in fwd and back in Time line? Sorry unlclear on my end...
Oh and HFR footage? HFR? High frame rate??
One last thing, Do all cameras shoot anamorphic, or could they as AE is showing my MTS files; are Square? (1.00) Pic #1
    @Dave-  You -
At 1080, a lot of footage is interlaced, and evidently your camera made interlaced footage
Me- How do you know? because of the 2nd pic and upper field first indication?
You-Even if you know for a fact that it was shot 30p, the camera captures the entire frame... but it records it as two fields. They give it a fancy name: Progressive Segmented Frame.
Me- Is this typical false advertisement of the sales divison of brands like not telling you what CMOS or CCD is in a cam just slapping HD 1080p on the side of the box?
You-AE will treat it as an entire frame if you interpret it as having a field order of None.
Me- Won't that be a problem mis leading AE on an interpret?
Thanks Gents for the precise details.
    Best
