Question Pertaining to User Input

I'm have trouble figuring out how to prompt for user input and then use that user input as part of my code. For instance, I want to declare two variables that will hold complex numbers. Then, I want the user to input two complex numbers. After this, I want to place those two newly inputted into the variables that I created. Then I want to determine which of those two has a greater norm/modulus. Finally, I want to print those results out.
Here is my code so far:
Normalizable m1 = new Complex();
Normalizable m2 = new Complex();
         System.out.println("Enter the real and imaginary parts of a complex number: ");
         BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));Please point me in the right direction.

I was making two points at once - and in doing so I might have made it sound more daunting than it really is.
The first point was a direct answer to your question: use readLine() to get the user input, String methods to break it up and parseDouble() to obtain numerical values to create your Normalizable/Complex.
I really don't think there's a more straight foward way of approaching things. Try it and see if you can sucessfully read in a single complex number and display it.
{noformat}
Enter the real and imaginary parts of a complex number>12 -5
You entered 12.000 - 5.000i
{noformat}You will need the API docs for the relevant classes and have read them. Post what you've come up with for this first part of the problem if you get stuck. (I doubt if anyone here will actually write the code for you, since that would take all the fun out of it.)
Regarding the second point, you're right: by suggesting an auxillary method to read and parse the input I was adding some complexity. Feel free to ignore that suggestion. Personally I prefer a little complexity if it reduces complicated code to managable pieces. Complications will grow into a tangled mess (and are a place for bugs to live in); complexity can always be dealt with one small well documented chunk at a time.

  • How can I make my user input on the same line as the question?

    The only way I know of doing it is
    System.out.println ("Please enter an uppercase letter of the English Alphabet: ");
              letter = dataIn.readLine ();But that makes Please enter an uppercase letter of the English Alphabet:
    **User input here, a line down**So how can I make it all fit into one line with this sort of layout:
    Please enter an uppercase letter of the English Alphabet:  **USER INPUTS HERE, SAME LINE**

    change your call from println to print.
    check the API docs for this stuff, it tells you everything you need to know.

  • Taking user input in a PL/SQL block

    Can someone tell me if it is possible to to take user input from within a PL/SQL loop? I mean I want that for each iteration in the loop, the program first take user input, and then based on that input, it perform specific operations. Then it repeats this process for each subsequent iteration of loop.
    If it is not possible in PL/SQL, is there any other alternative?
    Thanks.

    > I'm afraid I have no idea how to get the server to ask questions of the user,
    especially when it essentially operates in a kind of batch mode.
    Yep. To expand a tad on what Hans mentioned here.
    To accept input, the process needs to be able to read from this input device. Let's make it a keyboard. The PL/SQL process needs to read keyboard input.
    The keyboard is attached to a PC 1000km away in a branch office. The Oracle server process, running on a server in the data centre, executes this PL/SQL code.
    So now this PL/SQL process has to automagically hack its way across the network. It needs to remove the keyboard plug from that client PC. It somehow must get that keyboard rewired, across that 1000km, into the server platform at the data centre. And only then can the Oracle server process running that PL/SQL code read from that keyboard input device and accept user input.
    It is important, when developing in Oracle, to grasp just what client-server is and how it works. And not to confuse something like a SQL*Plus Client Process (submitting PL/SQL code) with the Oracle Server Process (parsing and executing that submitted PL/SQL code).

  • How to validate user input

    Hi,
    I am new to Form design
    I am designing an offline form I just want to validate the user input
    whether user has entered Character or Numric.
    if user enters characters in phone no I have to give an error message.
    can you please give the pice of the script to validate the user input.
    Regards
    Bikas

    Instead of finding what is the type of input, you can restrict the user not to type characters in Phone No field.
    Place the below code in Change event of the Phone No field with Java Script as language.
    // restrict entry to digits
    if (xfa.event.change.match(/[0-9]/) == null)
         xfa.event.change = "";
    Note: You have placed the question in the wrong forum.. You might need the Designer ES forum.

  • How to validate user input field?

    I need to validate a user input field against a table. This field is not part of an EO but is used to update an attribute on an existing EO.
    My question is, where would I place the sql that would validate the user input value against the table?
    Is there an easy way to do this?
    I'm at a roadblock and really need some help. Thank you.

    You can execute a sql query or a function from <your>AMImpl.java, using normal jdbc.
    but I would recommend this, it is easier and cleaner approach
    1. Create a VO (<your>VO) with the sql statement
    Select client
    from client_table
    where resp_id = :1
    and client= :2
    2. Add this vo to the am
    3. In AMImpl, get handle to the VO (this.get<your>VO1)
    4. Bind params
    this.get<your>VO1().setWhereClauseParams(0,current_resp );
    this.get<your>VO1().setWhereClauseParams(1,user_input_value);
    5. Execute the query
    this.get<your>VO1().executeQuery();
    6. Get the row after the query is executed
    oracle.jbo.Row <your>Row = this.get<your>VO1().first();
    7. Get the value of the attribute from the row
    l_client = <your>Row.getAttribute("Client") ;
    8. So now you have what you wanted to do with the sql.
    Thanks

  • Dynamic change in the query name based on user input

    Hi Gurus,
    In a scenario, country appears as a user input variable.When the user specifies his country, the same query displays <b>Business trends</b>' data pertaining to his own country and rest of the world(international) in two tables.The reports are developed using Web application designer.
    Can the name(description) of the query be changed  so that the user input value for country gets dynamically reflected in the query name like <b>Business trends:Selected country vs International</b>?
    Regards,
    Balaji

    Hi Bala,
      ya this can be done by text variables. create a text variable( replacement path on the country infoobject) by going to the query properties on the description.
    if the user enters country value then it will be displaed on the description of the query .
    assign points if useful .

  • User Input in Dos Programs

    Hi, sorry for such as newbie type question but iv just started programming in Java (so im used to the simpleness of vb). I have a simple Java Dos program, and i understand the system. functions but was wondering how i could get the > user input prompt. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

    See if this isn't what you want:
    import java.io.*;
    // This program displays the user's input
    public class GetInput {
         public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
              // This is how we set things up to read lines of text from the user.
              BufferedReader in=new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
              // Loop forever
              for(;;) {
                   // Display a prompt to the user
                   System.out.print("Type something> ");
                   // Read a line from the user
                   String line = in.readLine();
                   // If the input is null or if the user types quit, then quit
                   if (line.equals("") || line.equals("quit"))
                         break;
                   try {
                        System.out.println(line);
                   // If anything goes wrong, display a generic error message
                   catch(Exception e) {
                        System.out.println("Invalid Input");

  • How to prompt for user input in Forms

    How do I prompt for user input in Forms?
    I am writing a piece of code where the user may choose, by clicking either of three buttons on an alert, to have the system assign a value to a variable, to input a value or to do neither?
    If the user chooses to input the value I want to update a set of database fields with the value.
    I have thought about showing a view where the value may be entered into a field displayed on that view. The value will be assigned to the variable by the user clicking a command button. The question I have in this case though, is whether, after the command button is clicked, control will be passed back to the code that called the view in the first place?

    Desgordon,
    This can be accomplished by displaying your message to the user using an Alert. I use 3 different Alerts (Note, Caution and Stop) in my forms and they are inherited from a central source file (such as an Object Library or a Template Form) so they can be used by all of my Forms. You can set the text of the Alert using the SET_ALERT_PROPERTY() built-in and capture what button the user presses with the SHOW_ALERT() built-in. Additionally, if you need more than one button to be displayed in an alert, you use the SET_ALERT_BUTTON_PROPERTY() built-in to rename the default button or to add up to a total of three buttons in the alert. Here's an example:
    DECLARE
       Alert_ID       ALERT;
       v_AlertType    VARCHAR2(10) := 'CAUTION';
       v_AlertTitle     VARCHAR2(25);
       v_AlertText    VARCHAR2(150);
       n_AlertButton  NUMBER;
    BEGIN
       v_AlertTitle := 'Title of Alert';
       v_AlertText := 'This is message to the user.';
       /* Code leading up to the decision point. */
       alert_id := FIND_ALERT(v_AlertType);
       /* Note: I only set the Label of Button 2 because the default button 1 label is 'OK' */
       SET_ALERT_BUTTON_PROPERTY(v_AlertType, ALERT_BUTTON2, LABEL, 'Cancel');
       SET_ALERT_PROPERTY(Alert_ID, v_AlertTitle, v_AlertText);
       n_AlertButton := SHOW_ALERT(Alert_ID);
      /* Now I can test the value of n_AlertButton for 1 or 2 to find out what button the user selected. */
      IF ( n_AlertButton = 1 ) THEN
         /* Do something, because the user selected 'OK' */
      ELSE
         /* It is assumed at this point that the user selected 'CANCEL' */
         /* Stop processing any further. */
         RAISE form_trigger_error;
      END IF;
    END:Hope this helps.

  • FDF Returns the entire form not just user input

    Using the properties dialog box on a submit button I set my form actions to return 'FDF Include' which according to the help menu will only return the results of the user input and not the entire filled out form. I only want user input because I plan to embed each results file in a website.Unless I am misunderstanding what should happen, it is not working. It is returning the entire form.  I would appreciate any help or tips anyone has to offer. If I'm doing it wrong and there is another way, please let me know. I just want to see the answers in the form fields, not the entire form.  Thanks!

    Thanks so much for your assistance. I made a form, and then set the distrubuted settings to email me the form when submitted. I posted it to our intranet and then tested it. The form I posted is the 'distributed' form that Acrobat made from my original form. I posted it on a public site so you can have a look. Here is a link.  This should allow you to download it instantly. If not, remove everything from the question mark to the end and then paste that link into a browser. I checked and double checked everything, but maybe I am missing something.

  • Where to validate user input from FPM_FORM_UIBB?

    I am supporting an ESS OVP app using WDA and FPM.
    This question concerns validating/changing user input from an edit page entered through FPM_FORM_UIBB
    In a form, on an edit page, we wanted to mask the initially loaded value of a field with asterisks.
    I used the feeder class get_data() method to accomplish this.
    The user may then overtype the asterisks with content data.  At times, the user leaves some of the asterisks there as well.
    I want to check the contents of the inpu field, and, if needed, compress out the asterisks.
    if not inputfield co '* ' .
    translate inputfield using '* ' .
    condense inputfield NO-GAPS .
    endif .
    Where can I put this code? Or, where, generally, do you code validations of form data?
    Thanks…
    …Mike

    Hi Mark,
    You should be able to catch the event in PROCESS_EVENT and GET_DATA. I would put the break-point in both of these methods and check for the field values and based on that decide course of action. So steps would be.
    1) Put in the break-points in the obove methods.
    2) Check the event and the field values you are intrested in.
    3) Code accordingly.
    Hope it helps.

  • Web User Input Form - in terms for DQ & DI

    Hi All,
    Thanks a lot for your excellent contribution on these topics.
    I have one question
    Is there a web user input form available for Business SMEs or User to input their rules/metadata which will get converted to equivalent code snippets into DI or DQ components automatically.
    If so, apart from Data Services Management console and Metadata reporting console, what are the other web services available to cater to this, kindly give us more insight on to this please.
    Regards
    Chandra

    Look at the top of this forum. There is a header that describes what this forum is for:

  • Producer Consumer & User Events with user input windows

    Hello All,
    I am planning to build Labview code using the Producer Consumer & User events pattern, the application needs multiple user input windows for things like personal data, feature selection etc, there could be around 15 or 20 distincts screen/panels required.
    The main question from me is... Is there a best practive approach to navigating/loading from one window to another etc, and also providing a way to to retrun to the previous window.
    Also I may need need to be running some slow logging and control hardware in the background while navigating some of the screens, this seems like the producer consumer vi will be running in the background while the user input causes a load/display window event.
    A simple Producer Consumer multiple winjdoow example would be very welcome. Thanks.
    Regards Chris

    I will second Mike's suggestion to use a central VI with subpanel(s).  It is usually less confusing than multiple windows.  Typically, the selection/navigation mechanism is on the left of the main panel, global info (like help) on the right, and the subpanel(s) in the center.
    The advantage of subpanels/subVIs is that you can launch your subVIs and keep them active in the background, even though they are not being used.  This means they will keep their state information and load into the subpanel almost instantaneously the next time you need them.  For a short tutorial on subpanels, check out this link.  Scroll down to the fourth reply for working code.  The original code posted is broken.
    Communication between your VIs or loops is typically done with either queues or event structures.  State information in each should be shift registers in the respective VIs.  If you have the time, I would highly recommend you learn how to use LabVIEW classes.  The command pattern is tailor made for this kind of application.
    Finally, avoid global data if you can.  Global data is anything that you can get to from anywhere (globals, functional globals, etc.).  Use of these can speed your development, but can also lead to sloppy design which will cause you major problems later.  If you really need globally available data, use a data value reference.  It is unnamed and requires a reference, which tends to enforce better programming practice.  Yes, there are instances where you truly need globally available, named data, but they are fairly rare.  You should only use them if you are experienced and really know what you are doing.
