Questions about tiger install

hello,
i am wondering if some nice person could help answer a few questions and walk me through this process. i am a final cut pro editor and recently very naively upgraded the OS (to 10.3.9) and quicktime (from 6.5.3 to 7.0.3) on my g4 tower. i've since read that you should never upgrade mid-project because you never know what kinds of weird things will happen to your system, but i did not know this at the time.
so these upgrades have pretty much wreaked havoc with my fiinal cut - log and capture no longer works at al in fcp, i have a deadline, and the situation is a disaster. i've spent 20+ hours troubleshooting already, doing every fix i can find online for this apparently known bug. but nothing seems to work (i've reinstalled quicktime every way imaginable, downgraded back to 6.5, reinstalled final cut, thrown away quicktime receipts). nothing helps.
so now i want to try reinstalling the whole OS. but - the bad news is that i don't actually have an installer disk for panther. my g4 came with os 10.2, and i've lost the panther disk i used to upgrade. and panther is no longer on sale anyway.
so here is my first question: i also have a laptop, an ibook g4 that came with tiger. can i use the OS on the laptop installer disk to get tiger onto my g4 tower? or will that not work. or is there some other migration-type process i could use to get the OS from my laptop to the tower?
next, i know there is all this stuff about the correct way to upgrade the OS - backing everything up first, then wiping clean your drive, then doing a fresh install of the OS. i'm a bit confused about this process. i used carbon copy cloner to make a backup copy of all the stuff on my internal drive, but am not sure what to do next - do i just erase the drive now? then what? if the tiger installer from the laptop works and i get tiger installed, then how do i move back all the stuff that i've backed up (without overwriting the new OS)?
hope someone can explain all of this to me - i'm a big confused. thanks!

First, you cannot use the Tiger installer that came with your laptop to install on the tower. Although it may work (or may not because OEM versions are most often machine-specific) it constitutes a violation of the license agreement to install on more than one CPU at a time.
Second, you say you used Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of the tower. I assume the backup is of the system that was working before you upgraded to 10.3.9. If so, you may be in luck. If this backup is on a bootable Firewire drive, then you should boot the tower from the Firewire drive with the cloned backup. Then use Disk Utility to erase the internal hard drive and use Carbon Copy Cloner to restore the backup to the internal drive. Of course be sure that you have set the CCC preference option on for Make Bootable.

  • A question about Tiger installation via firewire

A friend of mine took her A1055 14.1" 1.33Ghz iBook G4 to someone to have a bad hard drive replaced.  Before he returned it, without asking her, he removed Tiger and installed Leopard on it.  Her base memory is only 256MB, storage 60GB so, as might be expected, once she reinstalled all the necessary apps she has to use in her line of work, her iBook became sludge.  It constantly freezes up; something it never did before he installed Leopard.  She can't afford, at this time, to move up to a MacBook, so she's asked me if I can help her get back to TIger.  (The guy who installed Leopard isn't interested in correcting things.)
This question, before I begin:  I don't have retail TIger disks (and she doesn't, either), but I do have the bundled disks that came with my old pet, an A1054 12" G4.  Both iBooks do have DVD drives, but, of course, these are bundled disks.  Should I be able to successfully skirt the "bundled" issue and install Tiger on her machine via firewire?  I plan to save her important files to a flash before I begin but, since she's running Leopard (if you can call what it's doing "running"...) I'll have to erase her hard drive.  I'm hesitant to do this, if someone here knows any reason my 12" bundled software won't work with her 14.1" iBook, even though it was running Tiger before.  Since I primarily use a MacBook, I'm a bit reckless when it comes to erasing my own iBook's hard drive, but I'm reluctant to do so to hers, if all I might potentially end up with is an empty iBook.
I've never been afraid to ask a stupid question; see how brave I am.

Getting around to answering the question about my own iBook:  the one I keep next to me is model is A1133.  Entering its serial number into this site confirms that TIger was its original OS, so those particular bundled disks are to be expected.  But my old A1054's serial number reveals, as you pointed out, that it's OS was 10.3.3.  This begs the question:  why, when I purchased it as a re-furb at my local Apple Store, several years ago, did it come all neatly boxed, not only with user manuals and stickers, but bundled Tiger disks?  I suppose "Apple re-furb" is the short answer, but the "bundled" part is a bit fuzzy.
Well, back to the original question, Ronda, regarding my friend's iBook and the fact that the guy who worked on it installed Leopard, without her consent:  Yesterday, I was mulling it over, and, remembering that her RAM was only 256, decided that, before I did anything else, I'd up her RAM to see if this helped Leopard run any better.  I pulled a 1 GB card from my "parts" iBook and popped it in.  I'm running it through its paces, today, to watch its behavior.
If it continues to object to having Leopard as its OS, then would the bundled disks that came with my A1133 allow me to install Tiger onto her HD, via firewire, since its production year was more recent?  (I apologize that, at the time I originally posted, I'd not remembered that the A1133 also came with disks.  If you could see all the Macs stacked around this place, perhaps you could forgive that oversight.)

    hi,

  • General question about tiger

    hello,
i was wondering being a new mac user, how much disc space does Tiger and all its applications take?
i also have iLife '06 and iWork (not the newest one, one before it) and is there a way to "clean" the system?
thanks a lot to the responders...
    Roy.

If you don't use GarageBand you can toss it, plus all the space the files take up, in fact I wouldn't even install GarageBand with only a 40GB hard drive. If you do want to use it I would recommend getting a second drive. There is a way to install its files on another drive (I've done that before I bought a 250GB drive and just had two 60GB drives). If you aren't using it you can toss the GarageBand folder from /Library/Application Support and also the Apple Loops folder from /Library/Audio. On my system those two folders alone are nearly 10GBs. You may additional sound files in your home Library/Audio folder. In my case these don't amount to much, a "mere" 300MBs. If you want to play with music you need some pretty spacious drives!

  • Question about unzipping/installing two-CD kits and installation bug.

Oracle Developer Suite 10g comes as two CDs and as two download zip files. Because it's in two CDs, file conflicts are possible and in fact occur. The only conflict is with the [unzip-root]\stage\disk.label file.
I can think of several possible procedures -- (1) unzip to separate folder trees; (2) unzip first CD, install and look for instructions to unzip the second; or (3) unzip them both to the same folder tree and rename or overwrite disk.label, because they are not used. My guess is the latter. There is nothing about this in the OUI documentation or the product release notes or installation guide.
The actual install (Windows XP) fails with:
java.io.FileNotFoundException: D:\[install-root]\stage\Patches\oracle.options.ano.ssl.owm\10.1.0.4.2\1\DataFiles\install_fg.jar (The system cannot find the file specified)
This folder has a file named install_fg.1.1.jar, so there is a mismatch between the installation script and the actual filename (no assumption about which is wrong). I would think this to quickly become a known bug and a fix provided, but I cannot find any information. That's my real problem.
Also, when the install stops, OUI returns to the initial install page, but does not back out the partial install. I now have D:\DevSuiteHome_1 and _2 folders and corresponding folders on my start menu, each with only icons for the Universal Installer and UI Concepts Guide. Is there a good way to back out partial installs, or do I just need to delete what I can see?
Thanks in advance for help. Cross-posted to various relevant forums.

I have a lightroom 5 license on CD and installed on my stationary computer. Is it true that I can install it on my laptop too? I want to use lightroom on vacation.

  • Simple question about missing install disk

Trying to help a colleague with her laptop.
She had 10.4 on the machine and mistakenly reinstalled 10.3. She seems to only have Install disk 1.
Can a basic install be done with only that disk? No apps or anything, just the essential OS? Don't want to get half installed and be stuck.
    Thanks.

Disc Two has mainly printer drivers and pre-bundled software. You can do a full install of OS X including some printer drivers without the need for Disc Two. You can order replacements by calling AppleCare (have the computer's serial number handy.)

  • Question about programs installed from AUR by pkgbuild vs. repo

    Hi,
Do programs that get installed from the AUR through pkgbuild's get updated on a pacman -Syu also?
    Thanks.
EDIT: i.e. unsupported software like gnome global-menu

and you don't /just/ use the PKGBUILD in AUR. You use all the files in the tarball. i.e: download *.tar.gz and then extract it.

  • 1 question about tiger

is there any way to defragment or clean the disk for better performance? this is my first mac and i am fairly new the the system, any info would help. thank you

Unless you regularly engage in video editing working with very large files, etc., using a defrag utility with OS X isn't necessary.
See About disk optimization with Mac OS X and Maintaining Mac OS X for recommended maintenance with OS X which isn't much focusing on the Maintenance Myths section.

  • Just installed iOS6, questions about "iMessage" and other things...

I've been a satisfied iOS4 user since I bought my iPhone4, but I was forced to install iOS6 tonight in order to download a "free" app. I found a few new icons on the screen along with about 200 percent more "Settings" I'd like to ask some questions about. I'm sure a few of these could be answered by doing a frantic and thorough search through weeks of posts but I'm a little short on time right now.
First, what exactly is iMessage? Looking at the page for it, I can't see any difference between it and regular text messages. The info page says its to avoid charges, but between my data plan and not being charged for text I don't see where theres any other benefit. The one person I text with the most recently asked me why I had not installed iMessage yet, and didn't have an answer when I asked him why I should. I guess he just wanted to see text replies in blue instead of green.
In a related bit, flipping through Settings>Messages>Send & Receive I find a "2 addresses" section, with my phone number in there as well as my email under "You can be reached by iMessage at:" and "Start new conversations from:". What good does it do iMessages to have my email address? Does the Mail app handle text as well as email addresses? That seems to be the only explanation, and also very odd to think I'd be trying to text through my Mail app.
Second, looking through the Settings>Mail I see now that I have an icloud email address as well as the mac.com address I've been desperately hanging on to for the past 10 years, and the me.com address they've been trying to force me into since those came out. (I was happy to see I could delete the me.com address from the phone. I wish I could delete it from the universe.)
I wasn't even aware there was a such thing as icloud.com addresses. When did this happen? What is it used for?
Third, under that icloud Setting I see a long list of apps with buttons labeled "Off" under it. What are those for? Under the Mac.com settings I see switches for "Mail" and "Notes", with Mail on and Notes off. The Notes app (which I haven't used since my old iPhone 3) still opens, regardless of this setting.
Fourth, I now have an item called "Facetime" under my Settings. It is off, but underneath it says "Your phone number and/or email address will be shared with people you call". I understand caller ID normally sends caller number info to the receiver, but why would someone need my email address if I call them?
Fifth, I now have a "Music" setting, at the bottom of which I see a "Home Sharing" item, which when clicked brings up my AppleID and asks me if I want to Sign Out or Cancel. What is Home Sharing? Its also at the bottom of the "Video" settings.
Sixth, now I have Twitter and Facebook settings? For what? I don't have accounts with either of those companies. So why have settings, especially since it asks me to create accounts and download apps for those companies right in the Settings?
Seventh, there is a camera icon on the unlock screen. Touching it causes the screen to bounce up about a quarter inch, almost but not quite revealing something behind it. I should probably just quit asking about this stuff already, but I'll take the bait - what is this now?
Finally, what is the Notification Center used for?
If I got a text under iOS4, it would put an alert on the Unlock screen. Scrolling through this huge list of things under the Notification settings I'm really blown away by all the apps set up to yell at me. I can see having an alert for a text message but Game Center? What the heck is that, and why is it set up to hit me with a "Badge App Icon" (whatever that is) when I get alerts from "Everyone". Similarly, the phone is set to alert me to something called a "Photostream Alert"? What is this? Why is there a Phone section for the Notification Center? So they can put a Notice on my screen to tell me the phone is ringing? Holy cow! The phone is set to send me alerts from the "Weather Widget". So if I miss the fact its raining there will be a message on my screen to let me know? Whats next - a buzzer to tell me I'm listening to music?
There's a lot more, like what would I need Passbook for when I have the actual movie tickets, gate boarding passes, coupons, etc in my hands, but we'll leave that for another time. Many thanks to all who can offer some answers to my questions above.

  • The question about the sharepoint server 2010 install

    Hi Friends,
i have a question about the sharepoint server 2010 install.
my computer is used the windows server 2008 service pack 1. in order to install the sharepoint 2010 server, i need to choose to windows server 2008 service pack 2. my question is when i install the windows server 2008 service pack 2,whether the inside
of my computer  information will be lost or change?
    thank you in advance.
    Qearl

    Hi ,
No data will be lost either from your Windows program files or other drives as long as it is an upgrade.
After upgrade you will still be able to see your old program files under windows.ol folder in the C: Drive of the new OS.
The data will be lost only when you perform a clean install like complete formatting the HArd disk and installing from scratch.
As mentioned it always good to maintain a backup preferable important files in a skydrive as there is a good chance of external drives crashing.

  • Easy question about install time

    Hello,
I have been having a lot of problems with my MacBook and after posting on the forums it seems a re-install might help. This is my firt time doing a wipe/install so I backed up my files and booted from my Tiger install DVD and did a wipe/install and I am staring at in installing right now. It seems to be taking forever! It has been going for about 2 hours now and is about 1/3 of the way finished and says it has 3 hours 43 minutes to go. Is it supposed to take this long?

    Hi,
I haven't installed Tiger on an Intel Mac but have installed Jaguar, Panther and Tiger a number of times on PPC Macs. It never took more than 30 minutes to complete.
I would suggest you let the installation run its course and then see how the computer is working.
It might be that your HD needed repairing... did you check it with disk utility before starting the installation ?
One more thing... after the first boot (where you set up accounts, etc) you should boot from the install DVD check the disk with disk utility and repair if necessary.

  • About to Install 10.5 - Suggestions/Questions?

About to install 10.5 onto two Duo2Core white iMacs. Also going to 10.5.1 on 3 new Macs I just ordered. Other than the usual - backup data, repair permissions, turn off all updates, run no apps - any other suggestions for success in the install of 10.5 and the upgrade to 10.1?
Should I boot into Safe Mode when doing the 10.1 update after installing 10.5?
Also - I've heard but can't get any confirmation that Repair Permissions in 10.5 is very slow. Is that correct? What's the duration? Usually 30 seconds or less with 10.4.10.
    Message was edited by: pcbjr

For me, repair permissions is about 10-15 minutes now, even after installing 10.5.1 from the website. It also took 30 seconds in Tiger.
I didn't boot in safe mode after installing Leopard. The install took about 1 hour and was ridiculously simple.
If you have APE products on Tiger, such as Cleardock or Shapeshifter, you MUST uninstall before installing Leopard.
I upgraded about a month ago, having done only the uninstall listed above, and Leopard has worked beautifully for me, except for the increased permissions time.
