I have a feeling MODDESTDIR is wrong should be more like /usr/src/'kernel' ?
At the moment I have to rebuild module after reboot .....

Questions: On NVIDIA Kernel module and install process
Hi everyone,
I have a PCIe 7600 GT card, and trying to get it to work in its full power.
So far I have not succeeded, and condemned to run in VESA mode. But have one more try to do following the advisory of upgrading kernel and reinstalling the Nvidia driver.
I have few questions though:
- I know my kernel as 2.6.15-ARCH (from the dir in /usr/src), but in the above mentioned advisory, there were more digits after ("2.6.16.14-1"). Where in my system, I can locate those micro version numbers, if I need to?
- My not-yet-working Nvidia driver insrtall (from [testing]) left a kernel module with "agp" in the name. Is it the way it should be, taking into account that I have a PCIe card? Or is this pointing to an install problem?
- I have browsed the stuff in the 8756 vintage of the Nvidia driver, and noticed that there are references to X11R6 which I do not have (have an X R7 Xorg). Which one of the driver-install-script or Arch-PKGBUILD-file has the intelligence to place the files correctly in R6 and R7 installs?
- The 8756 text also refers to nvidia-xconfig utility, and I did use it in my 64-bit Gentoo install. In my Arch install it is no where to be found. Again, is this pointing to an install problem?

as an alternative to VESA :
pacman -S xf86-video-nv
this will install the open source nvidia driver. It supports only 2D acceleration, but should improve your screen a lot over standard VESA.

[S]Systemd can't start Load Kernel Modules after upgrade to Linux 4.0
After upgrading from linux 3.19.3-3 to 4.0.1-1 I've been having a bit of an issue. At that same time I upgraded readline (6.3.006-1 → 6.3.008-1), linux-firmware (20150206.17657c3-1 → 20150410.ec89525-1), nvidia (349.16-1 → 349.16-2) , wpa_suplican (2.4-1 → 1:2.3-1), and arpack (3.1.5-1 → 3.2.0-1). There may be some typos there since I'm copying by hand. Normally this wouldn't be much of a problem because I have been, priory to a few weeks ago, really good about back ups and would just roll my OS back 15 minutes. But things like that tend to fly out the window when the semester gets heavy. My last snapshot was on May 22nd, which I could still use, but would rather not. Also, it seems like a good idea to try to actual fix things for a change.

When I finished booting the system after the upgrade, I got an error message during boot “systemd[1]: Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.” When it finished booting I run “dmesg -l err” to confirm that I'm not having a bad day dream or something. I'm also still seeing the errors that I described in this thread. Don't know if the two are related. I also noticed, when I was logging in, that it said that my stystem was still using the old kernel. Indeed, according to “uname -r” I'm still using 3.19.3-3-ARCH.
The closest thing to experience I have with this is when I forget to mount /boot before upgrading linux, so I made sure /boot was mounted and rand “sudo pacman -S linux” to reinstall, but this didn't help. Just to check I ran “ls /lib/modules” and see the directorys “4.0.1-1-ARCH” and “extramodules-4.0-ARCH” as I would expect after a succesful upgrade of the kernel.
Running “systemctl –failed, shows that in addition to systemd-modules-load.service, lm_sensors.service has also failed. I somehow expect lm_sensors depends on systemd-modules-load. I tried “systemctl restart systemd-modules-load”, but was rewarded with a message telling me that it failed. The “journalctl -xe” log has the lines

Looking at the Wiki for Systemd under troubleshooting it actually has an example of trying to work through this exact issue. Following that I tried

which I already mentioned. At this point that bit of the Wiki stopped being useful.
Looking up on Google Failed to look up alias 'nfs': Function not implemented returned this thread from two years ago. Running “lsmod |grep sg” or $lsmod |grep nfs” returns nothing, but it also returns nothing on this laptop I'm using as well, so I don't imagine that is useful. Also, “# grep nfs /lib/modules/4.0.1-1-ARCH/modules.alias” returns a “Nosuch file or directory” error.
Searching for something on 'sg' turned up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=165361, which was also not useful.
As a sort of last resort I tried https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … the_kernel
I reboot and boot into my fallback installation, running 3.19.3-3, mount the partition with my main Arch on it, and arch-chroot into it.
I downgraded linux, and nvidia, exited chroot, and rebooted hoping to the Great Bacon that I didn't do anything too damaging. After all, my back ups are more than a week out of date.
This worked. I'm still getting those annyoing (they are only annoying right?) error messages I mentioned earlier. My system seems fine, if somewhat out of date.
Still, the question remains, “why did that happen, and how do I actually fix it?”

There were two problems. First, my grub.cfg entry was pointing to the wrong UUID. I fixed this by regenerating it. Then I noticed the UUID in the grub menu itself (during the boot prosses) did not match what was in grub.cfg. To fix this I reinstalled grub.
Last edited by nstgc (2015-05-05 12:07:30)Well, I took snapshots, not back ups but they work well enough for this, and rsynced /boot/ to where it use to be, moved/renamed the subvolume boot, and commented out the appropriate line in fstab. I also deleted that other /boot from before. I unmount /boot, and regenerate my grub.cfg. If my machine still boots, I'll try for an upgrade.

[edit5] My /etc/modules-load.d directory is empty by the way, and "sudo /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-modules-load" returns nothing. Note, this is all while running Linux 3.19, but I believe it should demonstrate that I don't have any special modules running. Or so I believe.

Listing of All Linux Kernel Modules
I've been poking around, trying to find a list of all available Linux kernel Modules.. Does anyone know where such a list may be located?
Basically looking for something that gives the module name (like - nvidia) and then a quick explanation or description of it (like - nVidia Video Card Module).
If I find something, I'll stick it on the wiki; but thought someone may have already run across it somewhere.

I am newbe in STREAM module development and this question might be a concept error. If so, please could you give me some clues?
I would like to use the "libc" funcion "getpwuid()" in a kernel STREAM module.
I have Solaris 7 64-bit kernel.
�Can I do it? I have read that for 64-bit kernels, only dynamic libraries are available. Therefore in order ot use libc functions I would have to link dynamically the module relocatable object with the libc library in sparcv9. I have tried to link the kernel STREAM module with libc.so.1 (in /usr/lib/sparcv9) with no success so far. Everytime I trie to load the module it complains with the message: unknown symbol "getpwuid".
If it is not possible, why? . Is it not possible to use libc functions such us: memcpy() etc..from the kernel context?

How do I install / update a specific kernel module?

I'm trying to update an existing kernel module. I can download it and it comes with a pretty easy to use Makefile based on http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation … odules.txt. The Makefile installs the newly created module into /lib/modules/$kernelversion/extra. I have some questions regarding this behavior:
* The Makefile creates a *.ko whereas arch uses compressed *.ko.gz modules. Do I have to compress the built module before installing it?
* Is the default install path (/extra) right? What about the module that already exists in /kernel/drivers/xxxx? Should I leave the new one in extra and remove the old one, or just replace the old one directly (backup not withstanding)?

canNever heard of the /extra dir in this context. AFAIK the correct way to do this is to place the updated module in /lib/modules/$kernelversion/updates (create the updates dir if it's not already there). This way, the older version remains in place, but the version in /updates takes precedence.

[SOLVED] nVidia 87.76 Drivers installer fails to build kernel module

I have a nVidia GeForce2 Integrated graphics card on my Asus A7N266 motherboard. According to the nVidia site, http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html, the most recent driver that supports this is the 96.xx series. Yet as shown here, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=87332, many people have found that the 96.xx series drivers cause graphical corruption when using a GeForce2 IGP.
Before coming to Arch, I had used Xubuntu 7.04 and managed to compile the last known working drivers, version 87.76, following the instructions here: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/03/25 … 20-12-386/
That all went well but now I'm using Arch. I tried using the nvidia-96.xx driver in the repos just for testing sake but I still got the same graphical corruption.
Thus I have been trying to install the 87.76 drivers on Arch, but it always fails at the kernel module building stage. I had first applied this patch here, http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ost1086669, before compling as the plain driver wont compile against recent kernels.

The name of the directory you placed the driver in contains spaces. That is why you get the no rule to make target GLX error.
It would be better not to circumvent pacman. I am using the following PKGBUILDs for the 8776 driver:

Is a kernel DSDT like a Loadable Kernel Module?
Hi all. In the middle of trying to resurrect a (shhh)Mandriva distro,,, well the data and programs from it.
During archLinux install there is a prompt "Do you need support for booting the lernel with a custom DSDT file?
Poked around the web and found some scraps of info that suggest a DSDT may be like a Loadable Kernel Module?
Anyone clarify this?
And is there a problem if I say "YES"?
Reason I ask? I replaced a failed mobo and the new one has an Attansic L1 Ethernet adapter which appears not supported in the current kernel.
There is a driver available at http://atl1.sourceforge.net - does this need to have DSDT enabled?A dsdt is not a kernel module. It is an acronym for Differentiated System Description Table. It is used by acpi to retrieve informations about your system (in particular those aspects involved in power management). In most cases, the default DSDT file is fine, and you do not need a custom DSDT file. However, ACPI is broken for some systems and fixed or experimental DSDT tables are provided as a replacement of the default one. You can also find howtos to make your own DSDT table fixing common mistakes. One of these howtos is in the gentoo wiki. However, you need to fix it only is if it is broken, and if you have no symptoms just answer 'no' at that question, which is related to the inclusion of the custom DSDT in an initrd. However, also if you answer 'YES' nothing will be broken for this.
There is no relation with modules-drivers external to the default kernel.

Delaying a service until a kernel module has loaded and "settled"
Hi,
I have a problem: a certain program is started too soon before a kernel module has had time to settle down. That means that the program needs to be restarted manually after each reboot, otherwise it won't detect the hardware.
The service in question is tvheadend (from aur) and the module ddbridge, which I've installed from outside of the kernel tree (since the one in kernel is out of date). That is a beta driver so probably it should settle sooner, but it doesn't.
From the recent boot (and others) I can see this:

Any ideas how to 'delay' the service? Is there a .target or service (or similar) in systemd which can see if the kernel modules have settled down?
Is my only option making a dirty script that will check that the device nodes are there, or hard-coding a delay in the unit file? How would one do that?

[Unit]
Description=Delaying tvheadend start
[Timer]
OnStartupSec=20
AccuracySec=5
Then:
# cp /usr/lib/systemd/system/tvheadend.service /etc/systemd/system
# cd /etc/systemd/system
# vim tvheadend.service
# diff /usr/lib/systemd/system/tvheadend.service tvheadend.service

Finally:
# systemctl disable tvheadend.service
# systemctl add-wants multi-user.target tvheadend.timer

This timer will start the 'tvheadend.service' 20 seconds (+~5 seconds) after systemd start time.
To my opinion, this is the easiest way to do that (no udev rule to write with the systemd device unit features which is much more complicated).

Automatic recompiling of kernel module after kernel update.

i tried to search for it but without success...
my question is - is it possible to set it up somehow that aur package would recompile after kernel update?
The package I would like to rebuild is rt3090 which is module for my wifi card. It is very annoying to rebuild it manually. I know that my fglrx module does it automaticaly but how to set it?

BTW: I use catalyst mainly because of saving energy management, which is of course better for my netbook. My card is too new to be fully supported by the opensource driver.
EDIT:
I solved the situation by upgrading my system, I tried in-kernel module rt2800pci. In the previous kernels it didn't work well with my crappy ralink rt3090 wifi card, but that's been improved :-) so I do not need rebuild the package anymore even because this module isn't compatible with newest kernel.
I also learnt how to write my own hook from archwiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mkinitcpio) so if the new module didn't work I would try it.
The final solution = replace module rt3090sta by rt2800pci.

My question is what is wrong and how i can compile module?

How to use Corecrypto kernel module
Hi all,
I know that Corecrypto kernel module received a FIPS 140 vaulidation, but I can't find any document for this module.
My questions is: how can I leverge this crypto module? For example, is there any API exposed so that I can use it to do AES encryption?
Is it a replacement of CommonCrypto library, or totally different thing?It's an Apple internal one; They're slowly but surely moving stuff out of xnu and into kexts - corecrypto is one example, and pthread.kext is another (formerly all those psync functions). It's a totally different thing.
in the xnu's src - 2422, /libkern/libkern/crypto/register_crypto.h, you have the crypto_functions struct. This relies on the EXTERNAL_HEADERS/corecrypto headers, but that's about all the documentation you're going to get in the form of the function prototypes it registers (albeit for internal use). Other functionality in the kernel (most notably CoreStorage, and AppleKeyStore iOS has nke.tls, SEP, the dreaded AMFI, and others) then calls these functions, and visible exported one e.g. xts_encrypt (libkern/crypto/corecrypto_aesxts.c) call on the cc.kext. I doubt Apple will let you release a kext which ties to corecrypto.kext, since the latter is deemed private.
CommonCrypto is still very much alive, but that's the user mode API. That's /usr/lib/system/libcorecrypto.dylib, which is re-exported by LibSystem (like the rest of the .../system/ dylibs). That's safe to use (again, in user mode).
It's possible that at some point they'll create a UserClient so that libcorecrypto would actually go via IOKit to kernel mode and do the crypto there, but that's not how it is now. To parallel Linux, it also has a crypto directory in the kernel sources, which are used for kernel-mode sym encryption/hashes, but you still have a user mode libcrypt (part of openSSL) which takes no advantage of that. -

And it turned out to be fairly easy afterward too!
Just install these RPM-packages from an Oracle Enterprise Linux v5 i386 distribution (v5, NOT v5U1!) in this order:
kernel-headers-2.6.18-8.el5.i386.rpm
glibc-headers-2.5-12.i386.rpm
glibc-devel-2.5-12.i386.rpm
libgomp-4.1.1-52.el5.i386.rpm
cpp-4.1.1-52.el5.i386.rpm
gcc-4.1.1-52.el5.i386.rpmThese 6 RPMs and finally the
kernel-ovs-devel-2.6.18-8.1.6.0.18.el5 RPM, to be found on the VM Server-CD you've burned from the downloaded ISO.

I'm pretty sure my question is a bit newbish, still I haven't been able to found any information/solution to my problem in 3days.
The kernel I use doesn't come with the module I need for my hardware and I would like to know if there's a way to compile it without having to make a new kernel myself (since compiling the kernel takes ages on my machine).
Even if your answer is a "Let me Google that for you", I'm so desperate that I'll be happy to see it.

Unfortunatel most of what you find on the web talks about how to create new modules which can be compild against the installed kernel tree, not about how to compile one of the native kernel modules against it.
Actually, try what those links suggest.
Skip the configuration part, and just do:
make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video modules
(maybe `make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video clean` first )
EDIT: Meh, that uses your config and won't build that driver... there must be some way though

make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video modules CONFIG_FB_VT8623=m CONFIG_FB_SVGALIB=m
The problem though is, that they might have removed some of the dependencies of the module, so if it doesn't compile, you'll have to recompile the kernel.
Good thing is though, you can use their .config as base (found in /usr/src/linux-..../.config)
You can also check if your config "supports" your module by putting it into the kernel source tree, running `make menuconfig` and typing /8623 and pressing enter.
The last line in that screen should read:
Selects: <list of options>
As long as all of those options are either =y or =m, you're good. SVGALIB can be =n because it's part of drivers/video/ and you can compile it together with your module.
