Quicktime 7 pro export h.264 better than iMovie quicktime setting?

Hi, wondering if anybody knows if Quicktime 7 pro will export h.264 files (mp4) with better quality than going thru iMovie 11 and using the Quicktime plugin? The results are ok with iMovie but wondering if Quicktime 7 Pro would export better as a standalone unit? Looking to make super small files from chopped up dvd's that will play on all mobile devices..Been using baseline profile setting in iMovie Quicktime plugin so it plays on iPhone 3g as well..  Thanks everyone!

I am trying to create very small files from a DVD , just simple chopping the DVD up into sections...when I use Handbrake to rip the DVD to a small h.264 (mp4) file the quality is surprisingly good...if I rip a higher quality mp4 to use in iMovie the export to smaller h.264 files don't look nearly as good when trying to get files sizes equivalent to Handbrake...I have tried ripping the highest quality video from DVD to use in iMovie '11 but when trying to export using QuickTime plugin to get h.264 (mp4) files they don't look that good...basically if Handbrake had editing capabilities the chopped up files would look better from there...
You are experiencing a process of diminishing returns by continuously re-compressing the video from less efficient codecs to more efficient/same efficiency codecs at the same or lower data rates which tends to degrade quality with each re-compression. My recommendation would be to purchase the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) and use it with MPEG Streamclip for your work flow. (Note: If you are using Lion, the component installer won't work correctly and you will either have the use the Squared-5 beta utility to install the package or install the codec manually.)
A better work flow would be to load the DVD titles (VOB file data) to MPEG Streamclip and edit the content there in its native MPEG-2/AC3 or MPEG-2/PCM compression format. You can set in/out points the same as using QT 7 Pro and save the segments as separate files using an alpha-numeric filename convention denoting the order in which you later want to merge the segments. Once all segments are saved, just drop all of them simultaneously back to the MPEG Streamclip work window and they will be merged in the proper alpha-numeric order. You can then fix "timecode breaks" and export the final product to your targeted compression format. Since you only re-compress the project once, depending on the codec/settings you use, your final file should approach the quality achieved in HandBrake. I.e., this is the main benefit of editing in the original "native" codec used in the DVD content.

  • Custom Quicktime pro export settings for iPhone

I want to custom export from Quicktime Pro, using h.264 in an mpeg4 container with a low data rate (about 400kb) and smaller size (400x220)
It imports into iTunes fine, but won't sync to my iPhone (error message: 'xxx' was not copied to the iPhone 'xxx' because it cannot be played on this iPhone.)
I've tried the Quicktime Pro preset called 'movie to iPhone', and it works fine: the movie copies to my iPhone. The filesize though, is far bigger than I know I can get it down to with custom settings.
I just can't get it to load onto my iPhone.
    What am I missing?

You've got Tiger and Automator! Learn how to use them help you make some "presets".
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/
You could also "hack" the .plist files found in the QuickTime Player.app and edit away.
Control-click on the QuickTime Player and choose "Show Package Contents". Inside the resources folder are a number of .plist files for presets. If you have the Developer Tools installed a double click on a .plist should open the Property List Editor. Change the settings to your liking, but beware.
I use Automator as either a "workflow" on a stand alone "application". Workflows can be triggered by a control click on a file where the "apps" act like AppleScript "Droplets". Drag a file to the droplet and let the application do its thing.
QuickTime Pro stores the "Most Recently Used" settings for many exports. These would be easy to re-construct or edit to allow you to create dozens of different "presets". Save each as an application (naming them may be troublesome) using Automator.

  • DVD looks different/better than imovie

I did a quick search in this forum to see if this has been discussed before. I'm sorry if it has; I'm new in this forum. Anyways...
I'm trying to edit video that I dumped from a video camera and DVD onto my powerbook g4 1.33ghz w/1.25ghz ram. I'm not having any real issues with the editing process itself. My problem is that, when I burn a DVD of the movie (using iDVD) it looks entirely different than on the laptop. I've even tried using a secondary screen to do the editing on (regular computer monitor). The secondary computer monitor looks the same as the laptop. But, again the burned DVD looks totally different. On the computer, it looks kinda like it's in dropframe but I'm using 29 (or whatever that higher setting is). But when I burn the DVD and play it in a regular DVD player, it looks much crisper, smoother and less pixelated. Will it help if I max out my laptop RAM to 2ghz or is this just a problem inherent in the preinstalled 64MB video card? If it's the video card, I'm thinking about upgrading to a macbook. Will a macbook video card be powerful enough not to have this problem? Any help/suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

    definitively YES.
as widely known, iM08/09 has this little *skip-field problem* with interlaced sources (miniDV imports are always i, independently, what camcorder marketing says), plus a gamma-prob.
    details on our website:
    http://sites.google.com/site/theimovieoutputproject/
you avoid these probs by using a 'real' dv-editor, as iMHD6 or FCE ..
sidenote: settings in the editor, on transfer and iDVD have to be correct for best quality. as: sequence settings 'fit' to camcorder, NO 'Export using QT conversion', iDVD is set to same standard as camcorder (PAL vs NTSC); project length <60min (=for highest bitrate in iDVD).

  • Better than iMovie

I'm busy editing my 3 month holiday in South Africa with iMovie (first time - new to Mac's), but the program seems a bit limited. Is there another piece of video editing software for a Mac that's alot better than iMovie?
(I know you get the really expensive ones like Adobe, but I'm looking for something that will equal Nero 7 for Windows, maybe something a bit better or expensive)
    Thanx

    define 'better' ...?
iM is excellent to import from miniDV, trim&crop material, add some simple transitions & titles... that is 95% of consumer level (.. and editor's) work..
'better' in means of 'more options':
    Final Cut Express
$$ (=cheaper than FCP) but a steep learning curve too ...

  • Quicktime Pro Export Issue (No Audio Track)

    Hello,
After I purchased and installed the MPEG-2 component into Quicktime Pro 7, all of a sudden when I export from one video file format (.MP4) into another (.MOV), there is no audio track exported into the .mov created.
I should add that I installed the MPEG-2 component to view a TIVO-to-go recording that I had been able to strip out of the .tivo shell. Once I played the .mpg file though, no audio track played either. Thoughts? Is there a way to uninstall the MPEG-2 component from Quicktime Pro?
    Thanks,
    Tim

    No audio export.
Use MPEG Streamclip (free) to export with audio.

If you can view a ProRes 4-2-2 video at all, then you either have the independent ProRes422 Playback component installed or the FCP "Pro" video components installed.

Check your "~/Library/QuickTime" folder for your various "Pro" components. If in doubt that you have them all, re-run the FCP installer and it should add any missing components, apps, or utilities.

  • Why is my QuickTime Pro exporting image sequences in the wrong order?

I am making timelapse films and using QuickTime Pro to export the images as a movie file. I have all the images in a folder named numericaly. I go file>import image sequence click on the first image and import. The images are in the correct order in the source folder I have also checked the resource files under show movie properties and they are in the correct order there. I then export as a QuickTime movie file at 1080p H.264 the film is stepping and the frames are out of sequence in the eported movie file. Why is this? Has anyone come across this before?

Is there anything else I could try.
Not sure. I would likely test an x264 export of the image sequence from QT 7 Pro or MPEG Streamclip (or from HandBrake if your system is not configured with the x264 codec) and see if the result was any better. This is not a problem I run into very often and, even then, the files were sent to me with no real indication of how they were originally encoded.
Or do you know how I can analise the exported file?
Not really... but it would be nice to have a tool which indicated the current frame type and listed pointers to frames/stacks of frames used for rendering reference.

  • Quicktime Pro export trouble

i recently bought quicktime pro (or so i thought) and i cant seem to get any of the special features to work properly.
    1) i cannot seem to download quicktime videos from the internet via the small "down arrow" in the bottom corner of the player. i dont have a down arrow to click on. my friend (who has QTpro) went to the same video, and was able to download it. how can i take QT videos off of the internet/ how do i get a "down arrow"?
    2) when exporting to ipod or MPEG-4, the movie loses its sound. When setting up to export as an MPEG-4 i go into the settings menu, where i can mess with teh video options, but when i go to the audio options, everything is gray and cannot be accessed. i just want to get a small home movie onto my ipod. (the movie is in MPEG format)
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

I'm assuming that you have gone to the QuickTime registration and entered you name and serial numbers, so I really am not sure why you can't save from the internet, unless saving has been disabled. As for the export settings, I believe QuickTime is nable to demux the audio from and mpg and then compress it for your iPod- you really should try to get the original file and compress from there, rather than recompressing the mpg.

  • Quicktime Pro export  does not work

I am trying to export a streaming movie to a MP4 or other to play it on my Ipod touch. The particular movie is located on http://multimedia.slowfood.it/index.php?method=multimedia&action=zoom&id=37
I have experienced this with other movies too:
When saving it from my browser it saves 1 1KB link, which I can play in Quicktime pro.
However exporting it to MP4 results in a 4 MB file, which when played only shows the quicktime logo. Exporting it to one of the other formats does the same. I am new to this. Any ideas?

It's a streaming video. You can't save a streaming video. Streaming videos stay on the sever and aren't cached on your computer. Most videos that you see on the internet are progressive video's. A progressive video can be save to your computer.

  • Quicktime Pro - export as mpeg-4 works in iPod Touch but not iPhone 3G

If I use Movie to iPhone / iPhone (cellular) the quality is pretty dismal considering I use the component cable to pipe it out to HDTV.
So, I tried using movie to mpeg-4 as that allows options. However, the resulting video can be transferred over to an iPod Touch (latest hw/fw) but iTunes (latest version) complains the mp4 cannot be played on the iPhone 3G and thus did not transfer the file over.
Any ideas what settings I can use under Movie to MPEG-4 that will work for both iPod Touch and iPhone? I would like resolutions up to 720, 25 fps and at around 768kbits/sec.
Right now I'm using ffmpeg.exe and I do get great quality, but would like to use QuickTime Pro if possible.

I've tried Movie to iPhone but like I said I do watch movies piped out from the iPhone to HDTV via the component cables. I don't recall the bitrate and resolution offhand, but I know it could be better. Also why iPod Touch can take the Movie to MPEG-4 but not iPhone 3G?

  • Background audio too loud in QuickTime Pro export

I created a movie in QT Pro 7.6.6 with a background audio track and voiceover for each photo. It sounds great in QT Pro, but when I export it (mov and wmv), the background music drowns out the voiceover. I am desperate to finish this for my niece for her dad for Fathers Day. Need to get in the mail today! Any help would be greatly apprciated. Thanks.

Not sure what work flow you were using to change relative volume of individual tracks but suspect any export action would automatically force a "reset" of the audio levels/settings before flattening during export. A better approach would likely be to create the file using GarageBand which allows you to set relative audio levels for each audio track independently and then set the final level of the "master" audio track separately. You can also split and duck individual audio tracks and/or "rubberband" the master track if desired before the final export.

  • QuickTime Pro Export freezes up.  Help!!

I'm trying to export a couple full resolution .mov's to web compatible versions (half-resolution, H.264 Compression, Fast Start). I just upgraded to Pro yesterday (and have QT 7.1.3), and have had several problems...
The movies play back fine when I open them in QTPro. Following the directions in the User's Guide, I go to File>Export. When I click on Options, the Movie Settings dialogue appears. When I move my cursor over the buttons, they light up (like usual in Windows), but if I click them, nothing happens. I cannot toggle the check boxes, and the only thing I can do is change the selection in the "Prepared for Internet Streaming" section. At this point, even clicking "OK" or "Cancel" at the bottom does nothing, and I have to CtrlAltDelete to close QT.
I have also tried skipping the Options button and simply using one of the presets offered by QT in the Save Exported File As dialogue box. I set it to Streaming-Medium and hit Save. At this point the Export Progress box pops up but remains in the "Initializing" state indefinitely until I close it, because it displays no sort of progress in the export whatsoever.
Any idea why QT is freezing up and not allowing me to export?

    Hello again
problem is solved. Nothing to do with the MPEG-2 component download. I had moved the QT launch icon from Applications folder to a Video Apps sub folder. All videos could be read OK, but export failed. I moved the QT launch icon back to Applications folder and everything is fine now.
