Quicktime Audio - discrete channels vs. assigned audio tracks

Hello everyone,
I just recently started using Quicktime 7 Pro's audio options.
Now there is an issue I need help understanding:
A partner sent me a mov file with 8 discrete audio channels (l,r,c,lfe,ls,rs,lt,rt). When I play the mov, I only hear ambience/background audio. I hear no dialog. When I assign each channel using cmd+j -> audio settings I can hear every audio track correctly (atleast I think so, is there a way/software to check whether every single track has output?).
I tested playback with VLC and it plays the audio fine, without any adjustments (also only tested by hearing).
I start distributing digital movies to cinema operators. Is there an audio standard for digital cinema ProRes movs? Are cinema operators okay with 8-ch discrete audio mov files? Do their players ignore or use the lt/rt? I guess it depends on the cinema operator but maybe there's a standard. I'm keen to learn.
Thank you in advance, cheers
Loki

What are you doing with these clips after you digitise, and before you export them? Make sure that if you edit your clips into a Sequence, you are not re-establishing them as a stereo pair (in the Timeline, if the clips display with a little 'bowtie' icon, they are enabled as a stero pair). Also, don't forget to check how you're monitoring your audio.
The process you've just done should absolutely create what you need.

  • Quicktime Video Conversion Not Preserving Multiple Audio Tracks

    Hi All,
I'm trying to convert a H.264 video file to a ProRes MOV using quicktime pro 7.
This is a video file that was created using Handbrake.
In Handbrake I am able to rip several audio tracks from a VOB. In this case I need to rip both the 5.1 audio and 2.0 audio. Instead of splitting this up into separate exports, I can attach both audio tracks to the H.264 mov. I can view and edit them in the Properties window of the video in quicktime.
So what I'm starting with is a video file with two Audio tracks:
    5.1 Surround: C,L,R,Ls,Rs,LFE + 2.0 Stereo: L, R
What I'd like to do is unite the two audio files to create an 8.0 track: L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs,Lt,Rt
By changing the naming of the stereo track from L,R to Lt,Rt in the properties windown, an option appears in the audio export settings to use the SMPTE DTV audio output (L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs,Lt,Rt). But when I use it, assuming it will recognize my naming structure and rearrange the tracks according, the export results in a stereo file.
What am I doing wrong?? All logic makes me assume that this should work...
I should note that when I open the H.264 in quicktime the 5.1 audio track is not enables (or clicked on) in the properties tab. I must turn it on for quicktime to recognize it in the inspector window. However, when I try to save the video it requires me to save my file in an MOV container.
When I try to simply export the file as a 8 discrete channels, it will export with 8 channels, but the first two are a stereo pair and the other 6 are silent tracks.
The only way I've found to keep these audio tracks together is to extract each audio unit separately (5.1 and 2.0) and then add one of the audio tracks to the other using the copy and "Add to Movie" feature. This is not my preferred workflow since I'd like to keep the audio and video together. I'm creating a workflow that will be repeated several times so the more I can streamline this process the better.
Please help. Any ideas would be great.

I don't think Quicktime Pro is able to export individual audio tracks.  It sounds like Handbrake create an AC3 sound track and a 2.0 channel stereo track.  I don't think iMovie will handle multi-track audio and Final Cut Pro X won't let you assign audio channels to individual outputs.
If you have the original VOB file, DVDxDV Pro will break it out to individual audio channels into separate AIFF audio files which you can then import into Final Cut Pro 7 and remix the audio that way.

  • Export to Quicktime with multiple Audio Tracks?

    Hi all --
I am on a tight deadline (48 hrs!) to deliver a Quicktime Prores file with 6 audio tracks: ch 1+2 dialog, ch 2+3 music&effects, ch 4+5 stereo mix. I'm working with FCP 6.
Now, I have figured out how to export the FCP 6 project to a Quicktime file with multiple audio tracks (in the Project settings, I specify 3 stereo channels, then I assign each audio track to one of the channels and export everything to a Quicktime file).
However, how can I send a stereo mix to channels 4+5?? FCP only allows me to assign each audio track one but not multiple output channels, and I didn't see a way where I could create a bus.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Something is being miscounted here. You say you have dialog on 1+2 and then say you have M&E on 2+3? I think you meant to say 3+4 and the stereo mix will be on 5+6. The easiest way to do this is to copy tracks 1-4 to tracks 5-8 by shift-option-dragging them there. Holding option will copy the tracks instead of moving them and holding shift will insure that the tracks will not move earlier or later. Then send 5+6 (dialog) to the 5+6 output (using the info in the above referenced discussion) and send 7+8 (music&effects) also to the 5+6 output. Done.

  • Any way to export QuickTime w/ multiple audio tracks?

I remember seeing QuickTime movies where on playback you can select which audio tracks to listen to. Kind of like director's commentary or different language versions for the same video stream...
Is there a how-to guide for making a movie like this in FCP? We have one video file and multiple audio files that we've placed in different tracks in the timeline but when we export to a QuickTime movie they get all merged together. We tried setting it up with multiple audio channels and then control-clicking to get that menu with each audio track and putting them into the different channels, but there must be something we're missing...
Is this something only FCP 6 can do? I think we have version 5.
    thanks!

I'm a little rusty on this - and without access to FCP 5 at the immediate moment - but I think the key is to set your sequence to have multiple (as in more than 2) audio outputs, then select Channel-Grouped for audio during the Export via QT Conversion.
If that doesn't work, you could always paste additional audio tracks onto your movie in QT Pro. After all, you'll need to tweak your language settings for audio track in QT Pro.
But where have you seen this implemented to do a Director's commentary-type option? I've read that multiple (discrete) audio tracks work only if they're tagged as different languages and the user's playback system is setup for one of those languages. (But I've been wrong before...)
    And welcome to the forums.

  • Export Quicktime with 4 channels of audio

I'm running Premiere 5.5. and I cant seem to figure out how to export a Quicktime with 4 channels of audio(2 stereo pairs), any ideas?

  • How do I send audio tracks to an Aux channel

I want to send 3 channels of back up vocal to an Aux channel.
An Aux channel has Sends, which a Bus does not. I EQ and set the levles on each channel. Then after I have a good blending mix, I would like to send them to an Aux channel and use a compressor & limiter.
The point is to send the processed vocals from the Aux to a Bus that has a good reverb and then turn the send knob depending on how much of the backup vocals I want to send to the reverb on the Bus channel, and also that I can assign other channels to that bus too. When I click under the I/O on one of the channels, there are only Bus options.
How can I get vocals in to an Aux channel and control the volume, compression, and limiting and then send them to a Bus?

Route your audio track to bus 1 (for example) . . . now on an Aux object, set it's input as Bus 1. Now you are free to use the Sends on Aux 1 (to a different Bus) as you see fit.

  • Choosing audio track in a multi audio track video (Quicktime or WMV)

    Morning all,
Quicktime and Windows Media support multiple audio tracks in
a single .mov or .wmv file. I have a couple .mov's and .wmv's with
4 different audio tracks in each one (such a space saver). On my
menu in director, i have 4 buttons which point to the same video.
how do i have it so that if i press "audio 1" button the video will
play with the first audio channel from the video..., or if i press
"audio 2" button the second audio channel will play, etc etc.
Think of a DVD with multiple language tracks, but instead
    it's a quicktime/wmv file.
I tried using the setTrackEnable but no matter which button I
choose, it's always the first audio track in the video. maybe I'm
scripting it wrong? Here is the codes I've tried
chances are i did this all wrong...but why not
    on mouseup me
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(2, false)
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(3, true)
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(4, false)
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(5, false)
    end
(note: for each language, I change from true to false)
    I've also tried
    on mouseup me
    sprite(5).setTrackEnabled(X, true)
    end
    Where X is replaced with a track number (ie 2, 3, 4...)
Any ideas? I can use either Quicktime or Windows Media, so a
code for either would work for me.

Unless you've created an archive iDVD project file the audio is only linked to the project from wherever you kept the files when creating the project.

  • Exporting quicktime with 4 audio tracks for broadcast

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to do this? i need to get a program out to a broadcast quicktime file with sync on 1&2 and M&E on 3&4, i have the sequence setup correctly as did a digi playout for the same thing which was fine. However, if i do 'export quicktime' with sequence settings i only get two audio chanels. If i go to quicktime conversion then all the drop down menus for multiple audio chanels are greyed out.
    Any ideas?
    Best,
    GK

if i do 'export quicktime' with sequence settings i only get two audio chanels
how are up you assessing this? QT Player has only 2 playback channels and additional channels will be mixed down to those ... but if you press Cmd-J to open the movie properties you should see all 4 channels are there, or if you reimport your exported file back into FCP you'll see it contain the 4 audio tracks as exported ... if not then your export settings are not correct :/

  • Exporting Quicktime with discreet audio tracks

How in FCP do you export a quicktime file with more than two channels of audio that are discreet?

    Hi -
    For FCP 7:
    Click on your timeline.
Type Command - 0 (Zero) and click on the Audio Outputs Tab.
Change the number of outputs you want, and set the track pairs up as stereo or dual mono, as you want.
Click OK, a warning dialog box will come up that you can dismiss.
On the timeline, Option-Click on each audio track right below the auto-select toggle icon, and from the drop down menu, route the track to the desired output track.
When done, export the Quicktime movie.
The only way you will verify that all the tracks are there is to either open the exported quicktime in Quicktime pro and menu Window > Show Movie Properties. You'll see the additional tracks listed there -OR- just import the exported movie back into FCP and bring it up in the Viewer, you'll see all the audio tracks.
Make sure you restore your sequence back to two channel ouput, if you want, when you are done.
    Hope this helps.

  • Channel strip plugin setting attaches to all audio tracks -- why

Hi all, an interesting thing happened today. Put down bass/drum/rhythm guitar trax. Rhythm guitar used a NI Guitar Rig 3 plugin -- a Vox amp with spring reverb.
    So far, all is well.
Then I create a new audio track, for the lead guitar. Much to my surprise, it took on the settings of the rhythm guitar track -- the NI GR3 Vox amp with spring reverb.
I tried clearing the channel trip settings. I tried bypassing the plugin in the rhythm track. I created new audio tracks.
All to no avail -- all audio tracks retained the settings of that first track, that is Vox with reverb.
I finalyl created a new project and moved my tracks over. All is fine now, but does anyone know what might have caused that? And how to avoid in future?
I really enjoy Logic, but I have to wrestle with fear every time I open it -- a "what the f's gonna go wrong this time?" sorta feeling. I've started pricing out Pro Tools systems to be honest...

It sounds like you don't understand the concept of Logic - tracks and track objects.
You can have for instance twenty tracks, all set to an Audio Channel 1 object. The tracks themselves are independent, but all audio plays through that Audio Channel 1. This is great for, for eaxmple, comping up a vocal part. Note that audio channels are themselves monophonic, so you can have only one audio region playing at any one time.
This is different to independant arrange tracks that play through different audio channels..
So when you hit your "next track" key command, make sure you are using "Create Track with next object", and not "Create Track". Create Track just creates a new arrange track assigned to the same track object. The other one creates a new arrange track and assigns the next track object, so everything's fully independent.
This is a complexity in Logic that other DAWs don't have, but it's a great feature once you get your head around it. One reason I like Logic over other DAWs.
So arrange tracks and audio channels are not inextricably linked, as they are in other DAWs.

  • Quicktime file with corrected audio track not working with iWeb Gallery

    Hello Everyone,
I shot a video and accidentally recorded on one audio track only (posted in another post). I've fixed the audio in Quicktime Pro by selecting the audio track (track 1) onto track 2 and hence I've got "fake" stereo or mono audio. The QuickTime file plays perfectly on my desktop. The audio is coming through both channels, as well.
Now, my problem is that when I've tried to upload the file to my iLife '08 iWeb site, the audio is back to one channel again. The video plays beautifully, however. I even uploaded the QuickTime file to my iDisk and from there to my web gallery through iLife '06. Still, the audio is only coming through on one track.
Hmm, is there a setting in QuickTime Pro that I might have missed after I "fixed" the audio? Like I said, the file plays perfectly on my desktop. I've even burned the file to DVD and it plays perfectly on my home DVD player. Somehow along the upload process the 2nd audio track is dropped. Any advice is very much appreciated.
    Frustrated in Texas,
    -Jack

    Hello QuickTimeKirk,
Thanks for all of your advice and to the others who have chimed in with their input. My audio problem is solved. The problem with one of the audio tracks getting dropped once the QuickTime file was uploaded to my Web Gallery has been fixed. I had to re-export the original QuickTime File and somehow the tracks corrected themselves. I believe they were canceling themselves out the first time. Weird.
Now, however, I see that I'm getting the blue Quicktime symbol when I open the URL. It takes about a minute (at least with my cable connection) for the poster frame to show up. I did flatten the file and have it set to play automatically. See what you get on your end: http://web.mac.com/honeybear7/Site/Movie.html if you don't mind. This is just a test page, so this is not the final presentation. The window size of the movie, however, is set.
What is the best possible setting I can have the file set on for it to play the quickest? I know much of it is dependent on the connection speed. This also is not a small file. It's 214 Mb, but it's a 40 minute movie and looks okay on the web. Having burned it on DVD as a 2.9 gig file it, of course, looks much better with no blocking. I originally shot it with an HD Canon camera.
Any more advice is greatly appreciated. Have a great weekend.
    -Jack

  • How do you combine audio tracks in quicktime 10.2

You don't. Use QT 7 Pro or GarageBand instead. (Video editors will also merge multiple audio tracks but they are likely more limited than QT 7 Pro which allows up to 99 data tracks.) GarageBand, also based on older QT 7 Pro technology, allows you to segment tracks, set track or selected track segment volumes to duck track or track segments, adjust or "rubberband" master track volumes, adjust stereo pan for track or selected track segments as well as, "slide" tracks or track segments along the time axis and apply numerous enhancements beyond my ability to even remember here.

  • How do I add a quicktime (10.0) audio track to imovie (8.0.6)?

I would like to add a quicktime (10.0) audio track to imovie (8.0.6). The audio is in .mov format. When I go to import it, it is grey and will not allow me to click on it.  I tried to put it into itunes and select it from there but I can't figure out how.

You might have more success converting it into an AIFF file.
Try this: Download MPEG Streamclip, it's a free utility that allows you to do a lot of different conversions on audio and video clips. What we're going to to try is save an AIFF to 48kHz and re-import it into iMovie and see if there's a difference.
Once you download MPEG Streamclip, open it and go to File Menu> Open Files... and navigate out to your AIFF file. Make sure the drop down list at the bottom of the window has All Files listed (instead of just Audio or just Video). If you don't show all files, it will gray out files it doesn't recognize. Once you have your audio clip selected, click Open.
From the File Menu > Export Audio... choose AIFF and under Sample rate: choose 48kHz. Click OK
Save the clip to the Desktop, maybe give it a different name (say #2 added to the end).  Quit MPEG Streamclip. In iMovie drag your new AIFF file to the project timeline.

  • QuickTime doesn't allow to choose each audio track of one language

    1) Before you tell me that I'm asking question in wrong community section, I can't enter to QuickTime section with new Safari 8.0 and it says that I have to download Safari.
    2) I have some videos in .mp4 format and it contains few English audio tracks, few other language audio tracks and when I chose one of multiple languages Quicktime always chose the very same track from this language. And QuickTime marks all audio tracks of this language with checkmarks. So there is no effect when you try to switch to another language
    3) By the way. iTunes playback has no error with this, but it's still in old Mavericks style. Thank you.

Many of my QuickTime files use Flash tracks for things like controllers and the only way they can be properly viewed is if "Enable Flash" is checked.
It's a completely different animal inside the MIME Settings options.
If you allow Flash in the Miscellaneous setting then the QuickTime plug-in is going to try and open the content and the Flash plug-in isn't used. Since QuickTime can only open very old Flash media the browser gives a ? over the file.
Turning it off allows the Flash plug-in be used.

  • Premiere Elements 13 (not Pro), recorded a video with mono mic input (left channel only), need to create 2-channel (left and right) audio track for finished product. Help?

The question says it all. I have been all over the tutorials as well as the menus inside Premiere 13 and cannot find how to edit the audio track beyond basic balance, volume, etc.
I can see the Audio 1 track, shows audio in left channel only, but it will not respond to attempts to select, cut/copy, paste, etc.
Basically I just want to turn one-channel audio into two-channel audio.

Sure you do not want to give the Fill Left and Fill Right another try?
According to the Adobe document Adobe Premiere Elements Help | Effects reference
    Fill Left, Fill Right
The Fill Left effect duplicates the left channel information of the audio clip and places it in the right channel, discarding the original clip’s right channel information. The Fill Right effect duplicates the right channel information and places it in the left channel, discarding the existing left channel information. For example, you might use this effect on footage shot with a monaural microphone plugged into only one channel of a camcorder, extending the voice of a speaker from one channel to both.
From what you wrote, your Premiere Pro video seems to be saying the same.
If that Premiere Elements Fill Left or Fill Right is no go, you might want to explore what you can do in this regard using the free audio editor Audacity.
Audacity: Free Audio Editor and Recorder
And, then import the Audacity edited audio back into Premiere Elements project as source media.
    Is the speaker system OK?
We will be watching for your results.
    Thanks for the follow up.
