Quicktime doesn't switch to external audio

Hey guys,
The problem I have is with QuicktimeX on ML is it not sending any audio to my external soundcard and my external speakers. If I turn my soundcard ON then iTunes, Safari, etc. will all play audio to my external speakers (switching over properly even). Quicktime only will send audio out if 'internal speakers' are selected in the audio section of system perfs.

  • Switching on external audio ejects external hard drives

    Hi folks. Weird problem here.
I have an iMac (27-inch, Late 2012, 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5, 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3) with a regular 3.5mm line-out jack going from the audio out port to an external speaker/subwoofer system.
Whenever my mac is on and I have forgotten to power up the external speakers, once I flick the switch on the system all the external Hard Drives attached to my mac eject (750GB WD USB2, 4TB Seagate USB3, 5TB Seagate USB3).
Normally they reappear after a minute or so but sometimes they don't and I have to restart in order to have them show up.
I am beginning to think that it is related to an issue I have had ongoing for a number of months (since upgrading to Yosemite actually) 27" iMac randomly reboots whereby I would have messages appearing throughout the day saying "external Disks have not been ejected properly", and then having 2 HD's terminally fail on me.
I have seen other threads talking about glitches with their audio when using audio in/out devices but I have seen nothing about hard- drives being ejected.
I suspect that the Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack) is susceptible to power surges, such as a connected device being switched on and this somehow causes the ejection.
Anyone else have similar problems or know of a possible cause?

  • Quicktime doesn't play video or audio

I'm working of a brand new Macbook with OSX 10.4.9 and I just upgraded to Quicktime Pro 7.1.3
I have a bunch of movie files that I've saved over the years that won't play. They're AVI files, and they open but all that's there is a white screen and no sound.
    Any suggestions?

There is no single codec for movies that have .avi extensions. AVI is a container format, not a specific type of file. An AVI movie may use one of the Indeo codecs (there are at least four that I'm aware of, none of which have been ported to Mac OS X) or one of the various flavors of DivX, among other possibilities. You'll have to find out what codec was used for the movies you want to view to determine what you need. Note that not all codecs for the various .avi movies are available for QuickTime.
If you want to try "hit and miss", you can try the codecs at http://www.divx.com/ and http://www.3ivx.com/ and see if one of them will work for you. Perian, which rolls several codecs into one package, might also work.
If you just want to play the movie any way you can, you can also give this player a try:

  • Record Video+external audio+system audio

I need to record a movie with:
    - Input from my firewire Camcorder
    - Input from my external audio interface
    - Input from GarageBand output
Till now I just find two ways of doing it:
    1.
    - Record audio in GarageBand and video in Quicktime at the same time
    - Sync both recordings (with Quicktime or ImovieHD)
    2.
    - Open a Quicktime movie recording
    - Start a screen video capture applicaton (with option to record system audio) and select the quicktime window to record
    - Start recording
    - Go to GarageBand and start playing
    - Switch to Quicktime screen and realy start my recording
    - Trim the unwanted initial video recorded.
Unfortnately both workflows are just tricks to do something that is no directly achieved by the applications. In the end it takes double the time to record a movie than it should take.
Is there any way to record with Quicktime a movie and at the same time both internal and external audio?
Is there another application to do it? I have search many applications and it seems that only screencapture apps can record internal sound. I have heard of wirecast but is too expensive (400$).

Although the application seems very interesting how can it help me since it does not record video?
I have no problem in recording audio in GarageBand, the problem is recording in sync audio and video so I don't have later to mix and sync both flows.
Maybe my question is not clear.

  • External audio set detection issues on Alienware M17x R4

I can't seem to get working the automatic detection of headphones or external speakers being plugged in (i.e. sound output doesn't switch to headphones and remains on the built-in speakers) on my M17x R4 laptop (Arch Linux x64, kernel v3.8.7-1 at the time of writing this). As far as I understand, the problem might be with incorrect parameters being passed to snd_hda_intel (mine are options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=alienware) but I can't seem to find any answers as to what the correct ones may be and perhaps I'm thinking in the wrong direction to begin with. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. hints, or tips.

robbiedobbie wrote:Hmm, those entries were in alsa 1,5 months ago on my laptop. About the quit and terrible sounding sound. I do recall having those problems, however I'm not completely sure how I solved them. First of all check your mixers in pulseaudio (You were using pulseaudio right? At least, this is default in gnome...). Also, please check that gnome did not switch the audio to headset (you can see this in pavucontrol). If it did, switch it back to speakers, since the soundcard makes the switch, not pulseaudio. Pulseaudio switches to the Speaker Channel, which is not meant for audio output.
If by check the mixers in pulse audio you mean check pavucontrol and alsamixer, the mixers are set properly, and in pavucontrol under the output devices tab the built in audio analog stereo is set to headphones, but even if I set it to speakers the audio is still very quiet and barely audible at 100%. Do I need to mess with the configuration tab?

  • MB switches to external display upon closing the lid - instead of going to sleep... what to do?!

Since I updated to Mountain Lion (from Snow Leopard 10.6.8) my MacBook doesn't go to standby mode anymore, when i close the lid with an external display attached.
Instead it switches the external display to be the primary display and keeps on running.
It seems to me there used to be an option to choose how the MacBook reacts on the lid being closed. But as desperately as I looked fr it i couldn't find it.
Is there still any way to tell my MB that it should just power down, when i shut it, even with another display attached?
Hopefully it is just hidden away somewhere in the preferences... would be really stupid if Apple had taken that feature out...

  • How do I get Logic to sync to external audio device?

Here is what I am trying to do:
I have a Big Ben which I want to use to sync everything together. I have Lynx Aurora converters on the way but for now I need to use a 002 rack with a Presonus DigiMax for audio i/o. So basically, I want to connect BIg Ben to 002 with SPDIF cable and to Digimax with Wordclock cable and that all seems to work fine when Logic is off. However I can't get Logic 8 to sync to the Big Ben through the 002 which is used for ins and outs. I can get everything synced by setting Logic to Internal sync and then sending SPDIF from 002 to Big Ben (which syncs externaly to that) and then connecting wordclock out of Big Ben to Digimax. There has got to be a better way.
I have tried setting Logic to external sync ( not exactly sure which method to use since nothing in the manual says that a particular setting is to be used with the i/o except maybe External or Free in Core Audio under Audio Tab on Sync settings - anyway this didn't work). I can use Digidesign CoreAudio Manager to set 002 to SPDIF but whatever I do, Logic doesn't not reflect changes to the clock rate. I someone could guide me on getting Logic to respond to Clock changes from 002R, I can probably get it going from there.
    Thanks,

This is what I have figured out so far. If I turn off Logic, the 002 and Digimax clock just fine from the Big Ben. When clocking Logic from an external audio source (by using external or free under the audio tab of Sync preferences), that when I change timing of Big Ben, the audio changes to indicate it is receiving word clock. Logic throws up errors saying that there is a mismatch from external sync to project settings or some such error message. I can then change the clock in Logic to match what the Big Ben reads and errors go away and things indicate that it is clocked correctly. This seems to work, I am just used to other programs that when I change the clock setting on the Big Ben that they reflect those changes right away.
And yes I can synch the 002 to the Digimaz but it still doesn't work correctly until I manually change the clock setting in Logic as well. I just wonder if this is how things are supposed to work in Logic or if I am doing something wrong? The 002 is just a temporary solution to get me through a session tomorrow. After then I will have a Lynx Aurora 16 connected with the Firewire option and then use the Lynx AES16 PCIe when it is available in a few week (or hopefully not months). I am just trying to get a handle on how Logic syncs to an external converter. And while Syncing and wordclock are maybe not the same thing, under the sync menu is the only spot where I have found wordclock even mentioned (at least it is in the manual when describing what some of the options allow).

  • Firefox doesn't play video and audio, cann't download anything!

A very strange problem occurred a few days ago. I didn't pay attention on it at first ( I thought it was caused by my provider) but now I found that it's a real problem. Firefox doesn't play video or audio. For instance, it starts loading and that's all. The same is with playing music. In addition, I can't download any files and view a big image as quick as early.
What is more interesting sometimes Firefox just begins to work in ordinary way.

  • "Autoplay" doesn't work for playing audio in mobile Safari (iphone)?

I have 2 problems that would like solve, please help me. The first one is I've noticed that QuickTime doesn't play audio automatically when setting attribute "Autoplay" to true. The second my problem that I need playback audio in background mode, that is without opening Quicktime player window. Below my code how I try doing it...

Thanks all in advance and waiting replies.
    Valeriy.

QuickTimeKirk, thanks a lot for your answer, but I'm interesting in Mobile Safari, not IE, FF or Opera This is these problems appear only for iphone browser, for others ones it works fine, even in Safari for Windows. So, autoplay still doesn't work... And please consult me about quicktime player browser's plugin, I mean why I cannot play sound with javascript function [documetn.getElementById("qtplayer").Play()] without opening sound track in plugin window? I really need playback in background. Or is it feature of quicktime?
    Thank you in advance,
    Valeriy.

  • Buzzing in external audio when charging

I have a fairly loud buzzing sound coming through my external audio when my MBP (mid 2010) is charging. I've tried switching speakers and headphones, outlets, between the two and three pronged chargers, and between individual chargers themselves. Nothing I'vetried has fixed it.  The only thing that helps is my own physical contact with my MBP.
    Anyone have any ideas?

It sounds like some problem with grounding your laptop. Sometimes peripherals will create a hissing sound when they don't have the same ground potential. Maybe try getting a new adapter cord, as the ground prong (The big round one if you're in the US) may be broken. If you go to an Apple store and be extra nice, they may give you a new cord for free, and save you 60 bucks.

  • Multicam and external audio workflow ?

    Gents,
I'm starting a new project and for the first time I have to combine footage from two cameras and an external audio recorder, I just need few hints about the correct workflow to make sure I won't waste time with wrong methods. The event is about 1 hour long (wedding).
CamA has almost the full event, divided in 3 large files (fixed camera, rec always on, divided in 3 because of 29 minutes per clip limitations in EU), I used CamA to fill the gaps between CamB clips.
CamB has more than a hundred clips
Both cam A & B have internal recording but I also recorded the entire event with an external recorder, creating a single .mp3 file.
I need to create a 20/25 minutes video,
What is the best workflow to sync Cam B clips with Cam A ? How would you work with two camera files and the external audio as main and only good audio ?
    Thanks

It doesn't look as though the audio file synced with the other angles.
Open the multiclip in the angle editor from the event broswer. Is the external audio present?

  • Syncing External Audio with Video on iMovie

If syncing external audio with video on imovie, once successfully syncing the 2 is it possible to permanantly merge them so that I can continue trimming and rearranging clips without having to continue to re-sync the audio and video after every change I make?

In Final Cut Pro X, yes. In iMovie...no.
The workaround in iMovie is to sync your external audio to the video clip. Mute the audio on the video clip so all that is left is the good audio. Then use SHARE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME. Choose Movie to QuickTime Movie and under Options choose Apple Intermediate Codec as the Video Codec.
Then save this clip in a place you can find it. Finally, import this new clip back into your event.

  • Why Quicktime doesn't recognize my camcorder HVR-A1 on a smaller Macbook but does on the 17" one?

Why Quicktime doesn't recognize my camcorder HVR-A1 on a smaller Macbook but does on the 17" one using 400 Firewire adapted to 800?

I'm baffled why the mic works fine with Dictation but not with QuickTime.
QT likely uses core routines which are compatible with your Lion OS and what can be seen in the "System Preferences" window. On the other hand, Dictation may be using an alternative workflow which can still see/use your mic. To add to the confusion, it appears Lion included changed audio handling routines which, according to some, were released before proper test had been completed and finalized with the release of Mountain Lion. (I.e., Snapz Pro X and WireTap from Ambrosia are still scrambling to update their system audio capture software for these changes but ScreenFlow's routines seem to work already.) In any case, I suspect your problem may be related to the Lion/Mountain Lion audio handling modifications but have no way to confirm such at this time.

  • Exporting Quicktime Slideshows with Music Playlists-No audio

I am using iPhoto 7.1.3, Quicktime Pro, OS 10.4.11 on a MacBook Pro. I made a slideshow that has 300 photos and attached it to a playlist of four mp3 songs (all the same format, I believe). When I play the slideshow in iPhoto, it runs fine: all four songs play through from the selection of the playlist. However, when I export the slideshow as a Quicktime movie, there is no audio.
If I choose one song, the file works fine, repeating the music over and over.
If I go to the hassle of opening the individual songs in Quicktime and copying and pasting the audio together into one large track, imported back into iTunes, then I can "hack" the four songs into my Quicktime export.
It doesn't seem like this should be a problem. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jack

If you can't find a solution try Join Together, a free application for joining multiple tracks into one. It's reasonable fast, I'm joining audio CDs together as I type, and would make it much easier that doing it manually.
That being said, try reinstalling the intel 10.4.11 COMBO installer and the latest QT updater, 7.4.1. Follow that by a repair of disk permissions. All bets are off if any of the tracks are protected tracks from the iTMS.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Best way to sync 3 angles without external audio?

Just installed FCP X today — coming off of FCE 4, so I have lots of learning to do, but am liking it so far.
My first editing project is a concert of Bach's music I shot on Canon dSLRs a couple months ago. We had three angles, and while I will eventually be getting a copy of the professionally-recorded sound from the concert, I only have my on-camera audio to work with right now.
So my question is, how does one go about using the syncronization feature to sync three camera angles, without having external audio?
Each camera has several clips for the whole concert (because of record time limits). I was able to sync up the first clip from each angle by extracting the audio from one angle, importing it as a file, and using it as the sync reference, but there doesn't seem to be a way to add and build onto the syncronized clip (i.e., adding another extracted audio file and syncing it with previously synced footage). Perhaps I'm missing something?
Thanks in advance for any help!

And, yes, I did search the forum before hand.
Oh, and another thing I should mention:
My DSLR (canon 5d Mark 2) Actually records the DATE and the TIME of when I hit the record button. This is located under the "Date Created" meta data which is viewable in the windows media browser(explorer). AND, it also says "Date Modified" to indicate when I stopped recording. This is very useful,
but is this a good way  I can multiple cams synced in time?
    Thanks!
