Quicktime issue or bad hardware?

When using apps that depend on QT, I'm getting some real weirdness in the video display and also in audio as well. This behavior started about three days ago and without any known change or updates to the system.
EXAMPLE1: In Final Cut Pro (v5.1.2), when viewing footage in the timeline, the playback stutters on a single frame from that footage. I can move the playhead back and forth, but the browser will not update. The video frame is also corrupted with random horizontal lines throughout (about 3-4 pixels high and 20 pixels across) Video playback directly in Quicktime (v7.1.3) has no problems.
EXAMPLE2: In Final Cut Pro (v5.1.2), when exporting to MPEG via Compressor (v2.3), the video encodes fine (most of the time), but the audio will have a high-pitched squeal at around 4Khz. This squeal will cut in and out and will never be in the same place in subsequent attempts at export. Exporting via QT directly has worked but I only tried this a few times.
EXAMPLE3: In DVD Studio Pro (v4.1), when viewing video in the track preview mode, the video will not display and the application will freeze and a Force Quit is necessary.
ACTION TAKEN THUS FAR (in order):
- Trashed Prefs (all pertinent, FCP, QT, DVDSP,Compressor)
- repaired disc permissions and ran crom.
- Uninstalled, re-installed and updated application(s).
- Uninstalled and re-installed application(s) with NO updates.
- reset NVRAM/PRAM
- Re-installed OSX
- removed all third-party hardware from system (Decklink SP, Wacom tablet, ext. Firewire drives, network cable)
- Wiped HD, did clean install of OSX, updated OS, intsalled ONLY Studio apps.
- Ran G5 hardware test (quick test) - All passed.
- Running G5 hardware test (extended) - still running after 4 hours (fans cranked)
OTHER STRANGE BEHAVIOR (That may or may not be related but started happening around the same time):
- Sometimes fails to wake from sleep if in that state for more than 30 minutes.
NOTE: This system is used about 10 hours a day and had a power supply replaced and a processor replaced under warranty about two years ago. Since that time, it has had no problems. It is no longer covered by Applecare.
SYSTEM:
OS 10.4.8
Machine Name: Power Mac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac7,2
CPU Type: PowerPC 970 (2.2)
Number Of CPUs: 2
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 4.5 GB
Bus Speed: 1 GHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.1.5
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE:
I've ruled out the hardware issue as I have changed out the hard drives to another identical G5 and the problem still exists.
I am getting a process error "compressord (not responding)
I am posting about that separately.
SUMMARY:
Wiped hard drive to HFS+ (journaled)
Installed 10.4 and updated to 10.4.8
Installed Final Cut Studio and updated to latest release
SWITCHED DRIVE TO ANOTHER COMPUTER (Identical G5 w/ 4GB RAM)
Still crashing.

  • ITunes skipping during audio while browsing the web - Quicktime issue?

iTunes 11.1.2 for Win 7 is skipping during playback of audio when I am browsing the web.  Is this a Quicktime issue?  I tried changing the audio output device latency but it didn't do anything different as far as skipping goes.  Any suggestions?

Actually, that doesn't work either.  Here's the solution that is working consistently:
Go to iTunes, and Preferences > Playback tab > Play Audio Using > Windows Audio Session instead of Direct Sound.  There we go, that works!!

where do we post issues about bad apple customer support?

Well, these are user-to-user forums. I'm not sure that posting complaints about Apple customer support here would be a) productive (what can we really do?) and b) acceptable under the terms of use, though I'm not sure. My inclination would be to write a letter directly to Apple. Even in this email age, "real" letters seem to command more attention.
    Best of luck.

  • Embedded Quicktime Issue

I know someone else had a similar quicktime issue, but I
didn't want to hijack their thread since mine is a little
    different.
My QT videos work, they are embedded on page and play fine,
the exception being they do not autostart as they should.
The QT files were exported with the fast start option
enabled. When the page loads, you can hear the video playing, but
the screens black until you click on it or press enter as notified
by the alert. I thought you could prevent this using the
    autostart=true parameter.
Can someone look at this page and let me know what I am doing

Works fine for me in Win FF 2.0006 with QT browser plug-in

  • The wifi: No hardware installed issue is bad, I hv both my Mac Pro 13 and 15 inches affected. Can assist?

I have 2 Mac pro running on OS Lion and both faces airport down issues.

iTommy,  I have a MBP 15" new in February with the same problem.  It ran fine under Snow Leopard, which it came with.  I installed Lion and it worked fine for a few weeks.  It then wouldn't connect to any wifi.  I followed many forums and tried everything they suggested.  Deleted network settings, no change.  I deleted the wifi interface in a new location, no change.  Over the weekend I installed a new ssd drive in my laptop and installed the original Snow Leopard software that came with the computer and there was no wifi.  I installed Lion from the USB installer I bought from Apple to see if that did it, no.  Did the update to 10.7.1 with no wifi hardware still.  I deleted the Library/Preferences/Network folder to force the rebuild and it didn't work.  I just found this posting and this will be my next try.  Here is a link to the discussion...

  • Myriad Quicktime Issues - QT 7.5 and Mac OS 10.3.9 - RTSP, VLC, etc...

Alright, first I should describe the set-up. I have a Clamshell G3 300 running 10.3.9 on 320MB ram, accessing the INet via Airport. Overall, it runs surprisingly well. However, I've had a devil of a time getting video to load or display on QT 7.5. As I'm sure you are all well aware, an old G3 with a 4mb VRAM card simply isn't going to be competent with Flash. However (and I've used this trick on P3 Windows machines), m.youtube.com uses 240p and 360p 3gp files, which the ibook can handle without problem... when it actually gets them via RTSP. That has been very rare. I've gotten the below difficulties at home (WEP) and at school (unsecured).
The main problem I am having is: when I load a video (and I've tried many dozens of them in both normal and high-definition format) from m.youtube.com and my browser (I've tried this with Opera 10.10, Opera 9.64, Camino 1.6.11 and G3 Optimized Camino 1.6.11, Safari 1.3.2, and Firefox 2.0.20) attempts to open the stream, I get one of several errors. No one error seems to happen any more often than the others, and once in a blue moon, I do actually get the video (or the audio from the video), but that can't be more than 1 in 20, and is usually ONLY the first video loaded in a session. Sometimes, however, the first video does not even load after a reboot.
    1. Quicktime says "configuring..." and then says "Bad Request"
    2. Quicktime says "connecting..." and then says "Disconnected"
    3. Quicktime says "reading media (countdown in s)" and then nothing happens.
    4. Quicktime says "reading media (countdown in s)" and then it begins buffering and nothing happens.
    5. Quicktime says "reading media (countdown in s)" and then begins buffering and then an approproate timebar starts indicating playback but with no video or sound.
    6. Same as #5, except only sound plays.
    7. Reloading a video will often times result in the time clicking away with no sound or video.
    8. Quicktime says "Buffering (countdown in s)" and then begins playing only audio.
    9. Quicktime says "Buffering (countdown in s" and then plays blank media, like in #5-7.
I'm totally perplexed by this behavior. I tried 7.4.1 before this, and 6.5.2 before that, and had some problems, though I didn't stick with either long enough to really test out their relative merits, because I'd prefer to have the most updated and stable version my OS can handle. I even deleted every conceivable QT related file and reinstalled once without any change in the situation.
I'm also having a (potentially) unrelated problem. When I try to play files with VLC 0.8.6(any of the iterations, up through , have been tried), I run into an error message: QT does not support any appropriate chroma. While this issue does not pop up in VLC 0.8.4 (which supports fewer formats), part of me suspects some problem with my QT installation is to blame for this problem. And, yes, I've noticed that my particular error message with VLC is NOT unheard of, but most there blame problematic QT installs or something with QT. Given my extreme rtsp problems, I'm inclined to agree.
Any help would be much appreciated, and sorry for the length - just wanted to be detailed. QTKirk, come and save me!

Thanks for that. That site must have changed how they code and deliver video over the last year, because I was able to stream it on old comps before using VLC and/or QT. However, I installed RealPlayer 10 yesterday (despite the awful memories of RP that most computer users rightfully have) and the site now works flawlessly with pretty decent quality and playback. So, all is well again. And, using an old version of mplayer (the port no longer being developed, from 2004 or 2005) instead of VLC, I'm now able to play 640p horizontal xvids smoothly!
To your last point, I definitely disagree. I have had brand new laptops over the last 5 years, and I'm disavowing them. I'm very utilitarian, and I feel it is wasteful to purchase new laptops when most of the development is in artificially wringing out 20-40% profit margins by dint of planned obsolescence (like Tiger "requiring" firewire for installation, or Snow Leopard making G5s obsolete only 2 years after they were being sold new). I feel like I'm wasting the labor and human cost involved in researching, designing, manufacturing, and promoting top-of-the-line computers. Considering what most users need, computers today are grossly overpowered, and it would have been far more environmentally and socially responsible to develop simpler and more efficient applications for slower hardware than to push consumers into a frenzy that in no way benefits them. Using a G3 optimized port of Camino (and Opera for other tasks), Appleworks 6.2.9, etc..., this 6/7th generation processor is easily capable of handling what 80-90% of users would ever need. The only things that injure it's usefulness are arbitrary and artificial - like docX format and the huge amount of AJAX clutter slowing web access for all parties. Their benefit is anywhere from negligble to non-existent, but their cost is high to consumers.
Put another way: I'm recycling in a very responsible way by keeping this computer alive, and I don't feel like I'm making any real sacrifice by doing so. Win-win!

  • Macbook Pro imposibility to sleep by itself, is an OS X issue..not hardware

I´ve already read evrey post about the issue of MacBook Pro´s not going to sleep by themselves. Mine got the same issue, I can make it go to sleep if I close the lid or using the Apple menu option, but by itself, the computer won´t sleep.
I know.... I´ve checked the Energy Saver Preferences, I´ve resseted the pre Ram, the PMU, deleted some preferences involving power management, preferences and.... nothing.
I created a new user, to check if there was any corrupted preferences in the user, and nothing, still my MBP won´t go to sleep by itself.
I even install Leopard in an extertnal firewire hd, to check if it had to do with 10.4.... and the same result. After that I erase this HD and installed 10.4.8, to see if it had to do with the latest updates ferom tiger...and the same...
At this point, and I´ve heard this in this forums, you´ll probably think it has to do with the hardware... But I´ve tried a third OS before sending my MBP to reapir... so I check what happens under XP using BootCamp...and Surprise! under XP my MBP manage to sleep by itself, as it should...
So by doing the maths, I guess there´s a problem with OS X, not with the hardware...
I´m not a programmer or anything like that, but I hope this experience help someone in this forum (or someone in Apple!!!) to find a solution to this issue and share it with us...who bought an extremely expensive machine that can´t sleep by itself!

sorry. I was feeling too lazy to type in a full explanation. Well this might still not be a full explanation to newbies but I'm going to try my best.
In Tiger or other classic operating systems, Apple used to set up each and every macs in such a way that when user puts them into sleep, the RAM will stay powered on. It will not turn itself off, which is why the computer won't have to write RAM's content onto your HDD and waste some valuable 3-4 GBs of space. However, failing to write RAM's content onto HDD will cause Macs to enable SafeSleep. So, therefore, in classic OSs, either SafeSleep was entirely disabled or not even integrated into old macs.
So, when the RAM stays powered on, doesn't sleep, computer doesn't and can't write data onto HDD, disk space doesn't get wasted and SafeSleep is disabled or doesn't exist, it's called hibernate mode 0. Since the computer doesn't have to turn off RAM, write its content on the Disk and turn on safe sleep, it can drastically reduce the amount of time it takes to both go into sleep mode and wake up from it. In my case, it takes no more than 6 seconds in total on average to sleep and wake up. Before, it used to take 12 seconds and computer too often failed to properly wake up from sleep causing me to go frustrated and reboot forcefully, which was bad for the computer, as pros claim.
However, it has a drawback. If your computer is sleeping, and you disconnect it from the external power source and remove the battery and swap it with another, you will lose all the data you have been working on. For example, if you were working in Adobe Flash and then decided to put the computer to sleep before saving your work and your computer is set to hibernate mode 0, if you swap the battery when the computer isn't plugged into an external power source, you will lose the unsaved work. It doesn't mean that all your data will be lost. The computer just won't be able to get you back to what you were working on. That's all.
With safesleep enabled, RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically. this has been introduced to machines produced on and after fall 2005.
Always remember that if you change to sleep mode 0 on a MBP, you lose the ability to do a battery swap without plugging the machine in. I wonder if doing so is really necessary and honestly speaking, i have never been in a situation where I had to do a battery swap at all, let alone doing it without plugging the computer into a power source. i'm carrying the magsafe adapter with me all the time in case my battery goes low and I have to make use of electricity.
And here's the final warning: you must disconnect all your bluetooth devices and turn off Airport before putting the mac book pro to sleep. I'm exaggerating a little but this would give you 95 percent guarantee that macbook pro would perform an uneventful awakening from sleep.
Try it and report back. And use the last sudo command to get back 3-4 GBs of space that were previously taken up by mode 3.

  • ITunes wont open - Quicktime issue

Ive tryed to reinstall itunes at least half a dozen times now and nothing will fix this issue. If i try to open itunes, the process (in task manager) starts but gets to about 38000K then nothing, never opens no matter how long i wait. Im unable to end this process either, so it just sits there taking up memory. Following the advice of someone else in another thread i tryed changing the compatability of quicktime and itunes to windows 2000 and this gave me the error message that "quicktime is required to run itunes" despite the fact that i do have it installed. Reinstalling both itunes and quicktime have no effect on the problem, does anyone have any ideas?

    Hello BaconSquishy.
First thing I would do is turn compatibility mode off if you have it on for iTunes and Quicktime. As this will not really fix anything except under rare and special conditions.
Next thing I would do is Basic uninstall in the following order. And installation in the following order. If this does not work proceed to last link below for assistance.
Uninstall the following Apple Applications in the following order.
Launch Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs or Programs and features if you have Vista.
    -Apple Mobile Device Support
    -Apple Software Update
    -Bonjour
-Windows iPod Updater (Name might be different but look for anything with the word iPod)
    -MobileME Control Panel
    -Quicktime
    -iTunes
    *Now reboot the computer
-Download and install Quicktime Standalone. There will be 2 options. Click the Quicktime Standalone
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
-Download and install iTunes once Quicktime is installed
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
*Launch iTunes. Depending on the speed of your machine. Give it 4 min tops to load. Should not take that long. Pay close attention to fire wall alert messages as they might be looking for approval to launch the App.
*If you still can not launch it check the link below

  • CS6 dyamiclinkmanager.exe and QuickTime issues

First, I'm on a Windows 7 service pack 1 machine, i7-4930k 3.4 GHz with 32 GB RAM. Motherboard is an ASUS P9X79LE. GPU is an Nvidia GTX 770. I just installed QuickTime 7.7.5.
I've recently installed Production Premium CS6. Previously, I was successfully using Production Premium CS5 on the same machine but with a different motherboard and processor: ASUS P6T and i7-960.
Anyway, I installed CS6. Tried to open Premiere, but the program would always hang up when it reached "export quicktime host."
AE would hang up on "Initializing Media Core."
Encore would hang up on "loading importer quicktime."
    1. To address the Premiere issue, here's what I tried:
    a) As per directions from an Adobe support page, I allowed connections in my firewall for:
    AfterFX.exe
    Adobe QT32 Server.exe
    dynamiclinkmanager.exe
    PProHeadless.exe
    This had no effect.
    b) I then moved the Adobe QT32 Server.exe file from the "32" folder into another folder. Premiere then loaded correctly.
    2. Since (b) worked for Premiere, I tried the same technique with the QT32 Server.exe files in the "32" folders in AE and Encore.
Encore now loads properly. BUT after AE loads I get a message saying that QuickTime is not installed on the system. QT is proving problematic. Not only is it not recognized by AE, but I can't open QT. For some reason it seems incompatible with my Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1. I changed the compatibility settings for QT to XP Service Pack 2 and the software opened when I clicked on the icon. However, QT is still not recognized by AE.
Note: I found earlier in my investigations that when I ended the dynamiclinkmanager.exe *32 process, each of the programs would open.
    So:
Any suggestions as to how to get AE to recognize QT?
Is ending the dynamiclinkmanager.exe process a good idea? Will this disable dynamic link for Premiere and AE?
I'm beginning to pine for my old CS5 days, when everything worked fine. Thanks.

  • If iPhone 4 is bad hardware, will a new phone be exchanged for this one?

After reading all the problems people are experiencing with the iPhone 4, I still have hope and have yet to give my final judgement on it's competence. I will tell you that I too have been experiencing the same signal issues and dropped calls, even with the phone in a case. The other serious problem is with the bluetooth headset connection. Just like many other people, the iPhone 4 can't keep my headset connected more than 7 or 8 feet away from it and everyone tells me they can't understand what I am saying. The same headset, paired with other phones (including my 3GS) is working great.
With all that said, if Apple can't fix these problems with software and has to redesign the phone, will they swap our iPhone 4 (first generation) with the new iPhone 4 at no charge to us????!???
I love this phone, but I am having too many connection and bluetooth problems to just say "oh well, I'll just learn to live with it!"
Can someone from Apple please tell us, when they know, what is going on.
I and many of us will be as understanding and patient as possible, but we would like the truth as is discovered. Please.

Can someone from Apple please tell us, when they know, what is going on.
I and many of us will be as understanding and patient as possible, but we would like the truth as is discovered. Please.
Let's go through all your concerns one by one.
    1. Not everyone is experiencing problems with the phone. If you read these forums over the years, when a new Apple product comes out, there's all these "issues" that pop out. Most are bogus. Many are user errors. When the iPad came out a few months ago, you should have seen the garbage being said. Now it's quiet, with people asking legitimate questions. It's the same here.
    2. As for the antenna problem, it is not a vast majority who is experiencing it. With over 2.5 million iPhones sold across the world, if even 10% have a problem, then the noise level would be overwhelming. This forum is one of the first places people come to figure out an issue, and you're not seeing thousands of complaints, just a few. The problem is rather random, which leads me to believe it's a manufacturing defect, but Apple and others claim it's a software bug. Who knows. It seems a good case or bumper cures the problem, and I always use a case, so I think it's easily cured.
    3. As for the bluetooth issue, again, it's not an overwhelming issue. For example, my iPhone 4 connects to every Bluetooth device I have, including a 5 year old car with a Bluetooth system. I don't use a bluetooth headset (I don't like the sound quality, and I want to listen to my music in high fidelity, which bluetooth is singularly unable to perform), but I tried it, and it worked. I am a statistical sample of 1, so take it for what it's worth, which, in a statistical sense is useless. But so is anyone else describing their anecdote. You need to try it yourself. Some older headsets just seem to fail with newer bluetooth standards. If it doesn't work, get another iPhone, Apple is good for that.
    4. If there is an issue with the phone, whether, software, firmware or hardware, Apple will do the right thing. They know, as do most corporations who sell products, what constitutes whining and what constitutes a real problem. But they aren't going to say anything, until they say something.
    5. No one from Apple reads what you're writing. If you want to voice a concern, this isn't the place to do it. And once again, even if they did, they will do what they need to do to make everyone happy. Let's just say my personal experience with a MacBook Pro last year was dealt with in the most professional way possible, and they made me extremely happy. And that was a $3000 item.
Just relax. If Apple is going to treat its customers unethically, which is not indicated by its past behavior, then I'll be the first to bash them.
Go buy one (but there's a three week wait, so you'll really have to be patient). If it has a problem, walk, run, drive, bicycle to your local Apple Store, and get it replaced. They'll make you happy. If you return it four times, I'd ask to see the manager. They'll really make you happy, I promise.

  • Driver issue-problem installing hardware

I installed the latest update to iTunes yesterday. Now, when I connect my IPod to my PC, I get the following error message:
"There was a problem installing this hardware-apple IPOD USB driver-An Error Occurred During the Installation of this device. The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request."
I have searched for an updated driver, but I keep getting the same error message as above. The iPod shows up in device manager, but with a yellow exclamation point next to it. It says "The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)." I've also reinstalled the driver.cab file from my Windows installation disk, but none of this has resolved this issue.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I've resolved this issue. I used SYSTEM RESTORE to find a restore point from before I upgraded iTunes. When I went to start iTunes after restoration it didn't want to start, so I had to go to the Apple web site to download and reinstall iTunes. It seems to be working now though some of my music didn't initially sync from the library to my iPod because my computer wasn't "authorized" according to the error message. All I did then was attempt to play oe of the songs that wouldn't sync and I got prompted for my iTunes password, plugged that in and everything seems to have synced just fine.

  • Quicktime Error -37, bad filename or volume name error

This appears to be bug in Quicktime for windows -- if the filename of a .mov is longer than ~60 characters, quicktime throws this error and exits. Making the filename shorter and it works. Completely different name that's long -- breaks... Playing the same file on OS X works fine.
Do the developers know of this issue?
    Matt

Do the videos play in iTunes? If they do not then your videos may need to be converted. You can use iTunes to convert them or you can use a 3rd party converter like....
    Videora
    Squared5 iPod Video Converter

  • Touchscreen issue - especially bad on games

I first noticed this on a running game where you have to hold down either the left or right side of the screen to move in that direction. It would usually register the first press, but not that I had held my finger down so I wasnt moving properly. I thought this was due to the game it's self rather than my phone.
I've just downloaded Naugh where you have to rotate the screen by touching either side of the phone, and again the same issue. It's really unresponsive - It will recognise the tap but not that i've held it, it will stop working. Occasionaly this will also happen when scrolling a page.
I turned on the option to display touches, and  have recorded a video that shows what I mean. In the video you can see I can press and hold right no problem, but if I press left it bugs out.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UW2gCWpThWc
Has anyone else experienced this? Or if not, any suggestions on figuring out whats wrong?

Just my two cents, but I had similar issues with using two thumbs on games (one to move and the other to attack, etc.) and it wouldn't register my movements each time... it would be hit or miss. Since I was within my 15 day return period with tmo, I just had it replaced... that resolved my problem. So, for me, it was hardware related.
BTW, doing a factory reset did no good.

  • Imac7,1 freezes with severe graphics issues after bad-tv filter

firsttly, sorry, this could be a double post, i think i forgot deleting the old one in the wrong category.
well, i don't really know if this is a common issue or whether this is firmware or snow leopard related: if i apply the bad-tv filter in fcp7 (fcs3) my screen is going crazy after a few seconds: squares and dots in all kinds of colours etc...then snow leopard freezes and i have to force a reboot. everything else is working great! any ideas or related problems out there?
i've got the 1.3 firmware update. clean install!

I was teaching an FCP class today, and I had the same problem with the Bad Film filter on four new 24" iMacs, each with 256MB ATI Graphics Card.
They were all running SN 10.6.1 and FCP 7.0.1

  • Quicktime issue

I went to purchase a movie last night on iTunes and was informed I needed to upgrade quicktime. I go through the process and when I restart my computer, iTunes will not open. It says I need to repair or reinstall quicktime. I reinstall it, restart the computer again, and get the same message. I do store iTunes on a seperate hard drive from the laptop and installed it on the hard drive, AND laptop, and still get the same answer. Any suggestions would be helpful since I cannot open iTunes at all now.

    Hi,
Try the General installation troubleshooting tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1926
The steps under *Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer* will likely resolve the issue.
