RAC upgradation 9i to 11g R2

Hi,
I have been given the requirement to migrate a 9i RAC 3 node database( 9i cluster) to 11g R2 RAC database iam looking for a document or steps to do this activity. any help on this is highly appreciated.
should I upgrade the cluster first and then upgrade each node one by one or I should upgrade the cluster and upgrade all the home in one go ?
Thanks,
Satish Abraham.J

Hi,
Since you are using RAC database , you need to upgrade Clusterware (11.2.0.3) first , then RAC database upgrade(11.2.0.3).
For RAC Upgrade to 11.2.0.3 we have following options/upgrade_methods available:-
+1.Manual Upgrade (using catupgrd.sql script)+
You have to do this in two steps:-
9.2.0.3 ---->9.2.0.8 ----> 11.2.0.3
+2. Using DBUA (Database Upgrade Assistant)+
+3. Export / Import+
If you have MOS access, then you can refer following Note:-

How to perform 10g RAC upgrade to 11g with Dataguard in place?
    OS=LINUX
    RDBMS=10.2.0.4
    DG=PHYSICAL STANDBY
    Below is my understanding
    1)Install 11g CRS in NEW_CRS_HOME
    2)Install 11g in NEW_ASM_HOME
    3)Install 11g in NEW_RDBMS_HOME
4)Export the new NEW_ORACLE_HOME and start up the database with startup upgrade.
    5) Run the catupgrade.sql script.
Are there any other steps involve?
In case I have to rollback then how to rollback CRS.

Personally I would use DBUA instead of catupgrade.sql, but make sure you follow the upgrade documentation for pre-checks etc. You will also need to use netca to recreate the sqlnet listeners in the 11g homes and register with 11g CRS.
CRS is generally fairly quick to re-install and re-register databases, and this is cleaner than trying to restore OCR and VOTE disks etc. If you prefer to rollback be sure you backup the OCR and VOTE disks (e.g use dd), backup /etc/oracle, CRS_HOME, /etc/init* scripts etc.
The dataguard standby database should roll forward through the upgrade, but you will need to manually register the standby with 11gCRS. Make sure you have your DB and Log create_file_dest's set, as well as standby_file_management=auto. Personally I would manually recover the standby after the upgrade in case I need to use it to fallback.

  • Upgrade ERP database 11g and ATG7 with SSO integation

Please let us know how to Perform Upgrade ERP database 11g and ATG7 with SSO integation .
    Regards .

We have completed to upgrade ERP database from 9.2.0.6 to 11.2.0.1 and also apply ATG 7 on Test instance.
And user finish testing , there is no issue after upgrade and application can work as normal.
On Test instance we didn't implement Single Sign On
But on Production we have Single Sign ON.
Now we plan to upgrade on Production instance. But we afraid that we will found any issue on Production relate to SSO. Becase we don't have a chance to test it.
    My question is:
Are there any spacial step we need to do if we have implemented SSO After upgrade DB 11g and ATG 7?

  • Upgrade 10g to 11g

We are upgrading 10G to 11g on the same box(UNIX). I just wanted to what are files I have to take back up before Upgrade. Below are the files I know..Please let me know if any extra
    RPP
    Catalog
    NQSconfig
    Instanceconfig
I need to replace those files after installing 11g or edit according to 10G files...
Also wanted to know that, we should install obiee 7.9.6.1 on top of OBIEE 10g so does 7.9.6.1 installs in same folders where 10g installed or it creates separate folder? and
does it creates separate configuration files and catalog path for it it uses the existing 10g files?
    Please reply with some suggestions.
    Thanks in advance..

Thanks Bala for your useful links..also please let me know does 7.9.6.1 installation creates new path for its installation or it installed with 10g installed folder. I mean to ask 7.9.6.1 installation creates new configuration files and catalog?

  • Upgrade database to 11g with Application Express 3.1.2.00.02

What is the recommended procedure to upgrade to a 11G database while running apex 3.1.2
We recently upgraded our development database to 11g - the steps followed were to create a new 11g database and export from 10g and import our schemas into
the new version. while creating the database our DBA selected the install Apex option. Well this caused APEX to downgrade our version to 3.0
Of course nothing worked. It's been over a week now and through many posts and other googled articles have made several attempts to rectify this. I've uninstalled and reinstalled apex many times but my real concern at the moment is......
Well now management is ready for the next 11g environment - yikes! I'd like to know some steps to take to keep this mess from happening again.
    I appreciate your advice
    Moe

As you mention in your post, installing Apex as part of 11g is optional. If you are concerned about staying with the version of Apex you have (especially if it is later than the version that comes with 11.1) then just ask your DBA to not install Apex with the 11g installer. Apex can be installed separately and can be which ever version you need (within limits).
Likewise, when upgrading from 10g to 11g, you can either upgrade the database in-situ (which would preserve your Apex database installation I believe) or create a new instance and import your schemas and redeploy your apex apps (having installed Apex manually).
As an aside, 11.2 (out for Linux/Solaris) seems to come with 3.2.1.
    Good luck.

As part of the upgrade, you might research how new Oracle 11g features can help your system run better.
Your upgraded system can effectively start using extended statistics, a very powerful new 11g feature, immediately after the upgrade. I have a detailed blog post on how to do this with OEM - http://iiotzov.wordpress.com/2011/11/01/get-the-max-of-oracle-11gr2-right-from-the-start-create-relevant-extended-statistics-as-a-part-of-the-upgrade

  • Difference between Upgrade to Oracle 11g Exam and the OCP 11g exam

Is there a difference in the Oracle Database 11g exam and OCP 11g exam?
Say for example, i am an OCP 10g and I took the New Features Course for 11g. Then I will upgrade to OCP 11g
    or
I will take all the courses for 11g then take OCP (do not worry, money is not an issue in this case)
Is there a difference between the two in terms of the examination?
Will the exams for Upgrade to OCP11g and OCP11g the same?
Which one is harder? or easier?
Thanks. hope to see your feedback

I am sorry. But i din't quite understand the explanation.
Correct me please if i am wrong.
    As I understand you:
    1. I am on OCP 10g
    2. I will need to take the exams (no need to get additional training) that need to be taken to be an OCP 11g which includes the following:
    - 1z0-051: Intro to SQL 11g
    - 1z0-052: Admin I 11g (if passed then OCA)
    - 1z0-053: Admin II 11g (if passed then OCP)
Is this correct? Can I put it this way.
I apologise if i am being explicit here but I am just being able to cover all angles.
If a person is 10g OCP DBA (and has proof of this as a valid certificate from oracle or can see this on their certification status at certview.oracle.com .... I say this because some people with a 1z0-043 exam pass only may incorrectly claim they are a 10g DBA OCP) then the following routes from 10g DBA OCP to 11g DBA OCP are possible:
    1) By passing 1z0-050 ... the 11g DBA OCP should be granted with no further requirements other than the 10g DBA OCP
    2) By passing 1z0-052 and 1z0-053 ....... HOWEVER .....
..... It is possilble some 10g DBA OCP may not have passed an SQL exam in the past (1z0-051/047/-007/001) and if this is the case one of 1z0-051/1z0-047/1z0-007 will also need to be passed on this route (I would recommend 1z0-051).
( Essentially route (2) is valid for any DBA OCP; there is a 1z0-055 single upgrade exam for 9i DBA OCP's)
It is recommended to find and check your existing certification under certification history (+not exam history ... that doesnt matter for this purpose+) under certview.oracle.com before starting on this route.

  • Upgrading to OWB 11g

We are planning to upgrade the database to 11g, currently on 10.2 and we are weighing the pros and cons of upgrading to OWB 11g as well currently on 10.2 . I see that OWB 11g is still in its first release.
I have some questions and hope you can answer/advise:
    1) Should we consider going to OWB 11g release 1, or should we wait for a later release?
    2) If we should consider upgrading to OWB 11g, what are the features that would make it worthwhile?
    3) If we go to OWB 11g, should we upgrade before or after we upgrade the database to 11g? Is there any argument for upgrading both simultaneously?
    4) If we decide to stay on OWB 10gR2, are there any drawbacks/concerns to upgrading the database to 11g?
    Thanks in Advance
    Suresh

    Hi Suresh,
These question are hard to answer.
But my personal thinking is that unless you have some valid reason to go for 11g R1 do not.
Its in first release .So will be not be as stabilise as 10g R2.

  • Oracle 10g RAC to 11g RAC Upgrade on Solaris

    Hi,
We are planning to do a migration of a 4 Node Oracle 10g RAC on Solaris 9 to 11g with Solaris 10. We'd like know what would be the best path to take. We cannot afford any downtime!
Options: Are these feasible? Which option is best? Any documents links?
    a) Do a rolling upgrade of Oracle from 10g to 11g. Then take down individual nodes and upgrade the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 and bring them up back into the cluster. Is there any known issues taking this path? Is a rolling upgrade like this possible?
    b) Do an upgrade of the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 on each node and then bring them back up? Is this practical? Does Oracle allow different versions of OS running on different nodes?
    c) Use Dataguard with 2 different RAC environments (2 nodes each). How would this work? Is it the only possible way? Any steps please?
    Thanks

first of all i would not change several components (OS, database version) at a time. My recommendation is to make small steps and start with the operating system first. Seconds recommendation is to test and test everything in your dev or test environment prior doing the upgrades in the productive environment. Trust me: You will face problems :-) So you better try it beforehand!
    b) Do an upgrade of the Solaris OS from 9 to 10 on each node and then bring them back up? Is this practical? Does Oracle allow different versions of OS running on different nodes? As far i know you can run different operating system versions on different nodes if they are supported (Solaris 9 and 10 are).

Can someone tell me some good approach for upgrading a single instance 10.2.0.2 database of approx size 2TB to 11.2.0.3 rac 2 node db on linux.

    Hi;
    1. You can upgrade your db to 11gr2 first than convert it to rac
    2. You can use RMAN and restore it to new 11gR2 server
    3. You can use expdp/impdp to new 11gR2 server

  • RAC Upgrade

    Hi,
Currently our production is running on 10.2.0.1 RAC. I need to upgrade to it to 10.2.0.5 RAC. Do I test my application on 10.2.0.5 RAC ??? Or testing application on 10.2.0.5 stand-alone is enough??
    Need your valuable suggestion
    Regards,
    Saikat

    Saikat Banerjee wrote:
So, I understood from your reply that 99.99% (thanks you mentioned the exceptions where it may not work) cases the app will work for 10.2.0.5 RAC since its a same release..i.e, 10gR2.I have a major PL/SQL application originally written for 10.1.x RAC, that ran without problems on 10.2.x RAC, and is currently running on 11.2.0.1 RAC.
PL/SQL and SQL code are very unlikely to suddenly fail due a patchset upgrade.
If we would migrate the DB to 11g or new release then we should have tested it on RAC setup. Am I correct?Ideally, yes. But then is the test environment identical to production in order to perform a valid test? Same h/w, same storage, same operating system, same data, same configurations, same everything, except for a newer db version?
In my experience, this is never the case. Test and development environments never match production - so you cannot say with 100% confidence that the testing the application on development/test platforms mean not a single error or problem on production.
There is no such thing as a risk free upgrade. Despite what some (especially management types) would like to think and demand.
The issue is to identify what the risks are. What functionality is used? How complex is this? How well is it instrumented? Etc.
Once these have been identified, one needs to decide how to mitigate and manage these risks.
For a standard PL/SQL application (average complexity using common features), I would not be overly concerned to upgrade the database after minimal testing. For a complex PL/SQL application using web services, hooks into JMS via AQ, relies on X/Open distributed transactions using Oracle XA, and so on - this complexity increases the risk and the need for more extensive testing.

  • NULL and Unspecified in Dashboard prompts after upgrading 10g to 11g OBIEE

    Hi All,
We are working on OBI upgradation project from 10g to 11.1.1.6.5. We are facing one issue in Dashboard prompt level. If we can create Dashboard prompt on a column, its giving "NULL", "Unspecified" additionally. But, in 10g there are no extra values.
And the 10g, 11g instances are pointing to the same database and there are no NULL, Unspecified values in Database level.
Through some blogs and articles we found some solutions n are below.
    To remove NULL:
-->Go to the Physical Column properties in Physical Layer and Disable the Nullable option by uncheck the box.
-->Go to the Database Features in Physical Layer and disable value to NULL_SUPPORTED.
-->Go to Edit Dashboard Prompt, in Choice List Values drop-down list select SQL Results.
    To remove Unspecified:
-->Go to Edit Dashboard Prompt, in Choice List Values drop-down list select SQL Results, then write the SQL statements as columnname is not equals to "Unspecfied" ( In this way we can able to remove Null's also.)
-->Go to Content tab of LTS, in Where clause write an SQL query to restrict Unspecified values.
Note: CHeck with ETL, because if they maintains the Default value is Null when the Datatype is Character and they can maintain 9999 or #### if the datatype is Numeric. And check the Physical query and debug it carefully.
But, we have very big Repository and we have huge no.of Dashboard prompts. So, its not an easy thing to manage by using above solutions. Correct me if there are any mistakes in above.
    Any ideas on this...?
    Appreciate your help on this..!
    Thanks in Advance,
    Raghu Nagadasari

    Hi Frnds,
As of now, i found the only solution for the above mentioned issue that how to avoid NULL in dashboard prompt level:
Go to the Physical Column properties in Physical Layer and Disable the Nullable option by uncheck the box.
We have done this manually for all tables.
Appreciate if u have any other ideas.!!
    Thanks,
