RAC x Multiplexing files

Hi,
I am planning a new RAC installation and wondering how to use multiplexing in such environment.
As far as I know:
- Control files must reside on a shared storage system -> I can multiplex them between storage groups;
- Log files must not be shared -> Therefore, I can place log files for each instance in RAID disks (RAID 1, for instance) at participating nodes (not at the shared storage).
- SPFiles must not be shared -> Therefore, I can place them at local disks on participating nodes (the same way of log files).
Is that right?

Is that right?1) Yes control files would be on a shared storage as all the instance will be running over them.
2) Not entirely correct. They can lie on the shared storage as well. Theonly thing that you need to make sure even if you put redo and undo on seperate nodes as well, that they should be accessible from all the nodes as they would be required in the case of the recovery.
3) As a good practice , its good to put the spfile on the shared storage.

the "Potential blocker (pid=9871) on resource TX-0019001D-000037FF" part in the logfile caught my attention and I was not sure it's a block or enqueue contention.
The database instance is the only running instance in a 3 node RAC and I was wondering how it still may be affected by enque process?
    Any suggestion will be welcome!

  • Multiplex files won't drag from source to edit window

I have .mov files from the SLR, the audio can been seen and played from the Source window.  However, and this has occured withing past couple of days, I can not grap the file from the window and move it down to editing.  The video will drag, but I can not get the audio to come down even as a seperate file.  There must be something I did unknowingly a couple of days ago.  I have been all over the menus and can't find a solution.

I'm seeing exactly what you show, Steven. ....
However, if source patching is enabled for only a video track, then on dragging from the Source Monitor only the video gets added to the sequence. And, naturally, vice versa if source patching is enabled for only an audio track.
Thats what I am talking about too. ..and it suits me perfectly.
The anomally is that with neither A1 V1 selected ...audio and Video is styill both dropable.
I am fine with that too even though its a little illogical. (Dont fix it on my account)
Thanx for doing the great Vid Steven... you just missed out the important extra option but that was a good way to point out the difference in the discussion... before Jim and I came to blows!.
BTW - nice voice you have.
FWIW: Expanding on why it suits me to only drag one , the other or both by using the Source Selector.
In the case of a shoot (edit) where I have Synch scenes as well as MOS.. that selector is the fastest workflow for me because I can choose quickly on the fly what I want in the Timeline. (audio, video, both)
On a shoot (edit) with all MOS...I map all the clips to No Audio Channnels at the out set and never have to make the decison again.

  • Rac to non rac standby file name convert option

    Hi,
Rac to non rac with ASM both, please find the below details.
    Primary Setup.
diskgroup NAME for all files for both primary and standby +DATA
    pmon,unique and service name at standby-rac1, rac2
    db version -11.2.0.1
    platform - HP -UX
$ ps -ef | grep pmon
    oracle11 22329 1 0 22:33:55 ? 0:28 ora_pmon_rac1
    oragrid 23522 1 0 Jan 2 ? 1:30 asm_pmon_+ASM1
$ ps -ef | grep pmon
    oracle11 22329 1 0 22:33:55 ? 0:28 ora_pmon_rac2
    oragrid 23522 1 0 Jan 2 ? 1:30 asm_pmon_+ASM2
database and Unique name - RAC, so all files on ASM created under +DATA/RAC
    Stanby setup
diskgroup NAME for all files for both primary and standby +DATA
pmon, unique and service name at standby- racdr
$ ps -ef | grep pmon
    oracle11 22329 1 0 22:33:55 ? 0:28 ora_pmon_racdr
    oragrid 23522 1 0 Jan 2 ? 1:30 asm_pmon_+ASM
database name and unique name is racdr, so all files on ASM created under DATA/racdr when cloned with RMAN from primary backup. (by settling log_file and db_file covert from DATA/RAC to +DATA/racdr )
so now everything ok... but how do we create a new datafiles at primary for the above setting success, ??? and reflect on standby ???.
    1.create tablespace tbs size 10g;
    2.create tablespace tbs datafile '+/DATA/RAC/test.dbf size 10g; ??
    3.create tablespace tbs datafile '+/DATA size 10g;???
    4. directories name on asm and specifying on the convert options is case sensitive ???
    Thanks in advance...

    thats fine john,
    log_file and db_file covert from '+DATA/RAC', '+DATA/racdr'
    my primary is rac
    my standby us racdr
so i mentioned above folders on convert option, so if i created datafile with or without specifying a diskgroup like mentione below, with or without specifying the directory like below
will all create on under '+DATA/racdr' diskgroup ??
create tablespace test DATA size10m; --> not specidying a full path as DATA/RAC' so will it go to DATA/racdr' ?? or creating under DATA ?diskgroup on standby????
    Thanks,

The backup into the ASM diskgroup can be done online.
For the switch to copy and the following recover datafile, the datafile needs to be set offline, though.
The amount of Redo, generated during the Online Backup determines the time the recovery will need.
    Kind regards

  • I open .mpg file using QT and there is sound...NONE in FCP

I have an MPEG2 file on the computer, and opening it in Quicktime there is sound accompaning it, like it should be. When I drag the clip into FCP, there is no sound? What is going on here? What can i do to get the sound back? I checked the properties and the audio is demuxed under QT.

It probably means you have a muxed (multiplexed) file. Use a program like MPEG Streamclip to demux the file and convert it to an editable format before importing it into FCP.
MPG is a delivery format - not an editing format.

  • Backup - ASM vs regular cooked file system

    Use Oracle 11g on Linux.
The disk system is ASM. For instance, the FRA is configured based on a ASM disk group +FRA (along withe multiplexed logs and control files).  This is one place for the backup and multiplexing.
Now, I intend to place the multiplexed files also to a second location (disk). For this disk, I have two choices: 1) Use the ASM diskgroup 2) Use the regular datafile (/u01/oracle/oracdata/back).
Good thing about the cooked file system ( I can think) is that I can see the location of the file by going to the file manager and locate the directory of the files, kind of transparent.
For doing so, will it incur the opertion cost in the future? (As compared to the ASM diskgroup, though files somewhat hidden from the view, but Oracle will take care of "everything").
So, any comment on the file system of the second disk? (Oracle ASM vs regular cooked file system).
    Thanks

I suggest you continue using ASM and use the ACFS feature.
From 11.2.0.3 I don't use FRA on ASM only, I'm using FRA under ASM/ACFS mount point.
Oracle Automatic Storage Management Cluster File System (Oracle ACFS) is a multi-platform, scalable file system, and storage management technology that extends Oracle Automatic Storage Management (Oracle ASM) functionality to support customer files maintained outside of Oracle Database. Oracle ACFS supports many database and application files, including executables, database trace files, database alert logs, application reports, BFILEs, and configuration files. Other supported files are video, audio, text, images, engineering drawings, and other general-purpose application file data.
Starting with Oracle Automatic Storage Management 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.3), Oracle ACFS supports RMAN backups (BACKUPSET file type), archive logs (ARCHIVELOG file type), and Data Pump dumpsets (DUMPSET file type).

  • Oracle Streams on a Rac Environment

    Hi
I have some questions with respect to Setting up Streams on a rac Environment.Would appreciate a quick response as I need the answers by tommorrow.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here are the questions
1> Do we have to create capture process for each active instance on only 1 capture process will do?
2> If yes then do they need to have a seperate queue for each one?
3> How will the apply process access multiple capture process and the propogation take place?
4> can only 2 tables in the source be replicated instead of the entire database?
5> In case if we use a push job if both the primary and secondary go down how can we move to the third instance and use it?
6> If the instance goes down do we have to restart the capture process once again?
7>What is the best suited for rac - ASM/RAW FILES with respect to Streams?
    Regards
    Shweta

Streams in 9iR2 RAC environment mines only from archive logs not online redo logs. This restriction is lifted in 10g RAC. If you choose to go thru the downstream capture route in 10g then you can only mine from archive logs in 10gR1.
Having said the above here are my answers:
1> Do we have to create capture process for each active instance or only 1 capture process will do?
You can run multiple capture processes each on difference instance in RAC. Unless you have a requirement to do so, a single capture process would suffice. The in-memory queue should also be on the same instance as the capture process is running from.
2> If yes then do they need to have a seperate queue for each one?
    YES
3> How will the apply process access multiple capture process and the propogation take place?
Propagation is from a source queue to the destination queue. If the destination is a single instance database, then you can direct propagations for all of your capture(s) into a single apply queue. If the destination is also RAC then you can run multiple apply processes on each node and apply changes for specific set of tables. Maintenance would be something to think about here along with what happens when one node goes down.
4> can only 2 tables in the source be replicated instead of the entire database?
YES. Streams is flexible to let you decide what level you want to replicate.
5> In case if we use a push job if both the primary and secondary go down how can we move to the third instance and use it?
In theory propagation is a push job. There are certain things you need to configure correctly. If done, then you can move the entire streams configuration to any of the surviving node(s).
6> If the instance goes down do we have to restart the capture process once again?
In 9iR2 you have to restart the streams processes. In 10g the streams processes automatically migrate and restart at the new "owning" instance. In both versions, Queue ownership is transferred automatically to the surviving instance.
7> What is the best suited for rac - ASM/RAW FILES with respect to Streams?
Streams is independent of the storage system you use. I cannot think of any correlation here.

  • Controlfile lost in RAC environment

    HI,
One of my controlfile got corrupted in RAC where the file was placed in ASM directory...
I issued shutdown abort to database and removed the corrupted file from asmcmd prompt..
Now i am trying to copy the another controlfile which is healthy one to the failed controlfile..
But failing to do it,,, ..
Not aware of exact steps to be followed..
how to copy ASM controfile to another when database is in nomount state,,,
    Regards,
    TEJASWI

    Hi Tejaswi,
Duplicating a control file in ASM is a bit complicated and unfortunately requires downtime of all instances.
    Here are the steps:
    A) Backup your pfile (optional step)
    ex: create pfile=’/u02/oracle/admin/sid/pfile/initsid.ora’ from spfile;
    B) Add to control file parameter in spfile the diskgroup for FRA. In your case it mght be ARCDG.
    alter system set control_files = ‘your old existing control files’, ‘+ARCDG’ scope=spfile sid=’*';
    C) Backup controlfile (optional step)
    alter database backup controlfile to trace;
    D) Shutdown all instances
    srvctl stop database -d <your database>
    E) Startup a single instance in nomount
    startup nomount
    F) Connect to rman
    rman nocatalog
    connect target /
    G) Create new copy from existing control file
    restore controlfile from ‘ your old existing control file including full path’;
    H) mount and open your instance. Check for newly created control files.
    Select name from v$controlfile;
    J) Add the new name control file to control_files parameter in spfile.
    Alter system set control_files = ‘your old existing control file’, ‘your new control file’ scope=spfile sid=’*';
    K) Bounce your databases for verification
    srvctl stop database -d <your service name>
    srvctl start database -d <your service name>

  • Compress or reduce file size

This is a pretty basic question but I have never had this issue before. I have an mpeg file (mpeg1 muxed codec) of 18mb which is too big to email. What's the best way of either decreasing the file size or compressing it?
Also, I seem to think that neither iMovie HD or iMovie 08 can deal with an old mpeg file. . the sound gets lost?
    Thanks
    Tom

Also, I seem to think that neither iMovie HD or iMovie 08 can deal with an old mpeg file. . the sound gets lost?
This is normal. The QT structure is "playback only" compatible with multiplexed files (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VOB, Flash, etc.). Use an MPEG-base, third party conversion application (with required QT components installed if needed) here to transcode the content and retain audio. (I.e., the free MPEG Streamclip application will handle MPEG-1 content.)
I have an mpeg file (mpeg1 muxed codec) of 18mb which is too big to email. What's the best way of either decreasing the file size or compressing it?
There are two basic approaches here. The first is to re-compress the file using a more efficient codec (like H.264/AAC) using a lower data rate than your original file. Depending on your original video data rate, you may have a lot of "headroom" for re-compression or only a small amount. In the later case, you may have to also reduce the dimension of your export to preserve maximum quality. What you finally do may likely depend on what you can "live with" in terms of quality and file size.
A second, approach would be to upload your original file to an online server and then send the URL for the file, a reference movie, or a QTL (QuickTime Media Link) file which will play the online movie back on the recipient's computer. An offshoot of this approach would be to post the file to your own web site page using an application like iWeb and allowing the recipient to view and/or download the file directly from your site or subscribe via RSS if you plan to provide content on a regular basis (e.g., as a Podcast or Video Blog).

  • Solaris cluster, Oracle10g RAC

I just want to understand, which one is more favorable, most popular combination used by sun customers for Oracle10g RAC.
    1) Solaris cluster + VERITAS Storage Foundation
    2) Solaris cluster + QFS

Please refer to http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/820-2574/fmnyo?a=view for the supported options for Oracle RAC data storage. This is important because if you stray outside these you will not be on a jointly Sun/Oracle supported configuration.
Therefore, if you want to put Oracle RAC (tablespace) data files on a cluster file system, you must use shared QFS as that is the only supported option open to you. Furthermore, you can only run sQFS on top of SVM/Oban or h/w RAID - we do not support running it on VxVM/CVM.

    Tim
