RAID 0+1 using ExpressCard/34 with double eSata

I have a problem, and maybe someone here can help me a bit. Many thanks in advance.
I am doing a lot of RAW photo editing and also sometimes video processing. I want my pictures and video to be stored on an external hard drive connected to my MAC BOOK PRO using ExpressCard/34 and at the same time I want to have continuous backup of my files. I am thinking of playing a bit with RAID 0+1. Here is my plan:
I am planning to buy two WD My Book® Studio Edition™ II 1TB external drives (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=409). The drive itself operates as RAID 0 (striped) build from two drives 500 GB each - I understand that this way it is faster than one 1TB drive. I think of connecting these two drives to my Mac Book Pro using eSata Interface using eSATA II 2-Port ExpressCard-M form SIIG (http://siig.com/ViewProduct.aspx?pn=SC-SAEE12-S1 - seems to be recommended by WD). Then, by using Disk Utility, I plan to create a RAID 1 (mirrored) set consisting of these two external drives.
What I am expecting is to have something like RAID 0+1 and I expect this to be a better (faster) solution than buying one big WD My Book® Studio Edition™ II 2TB (2x1T internally) and using it in the RAID 1 configuration (which can be set by using the software provided by WD with the drive).
If anyone have some experience with RAID (main is close to 0) then I would be very thankful to read your comments.
I expect the configuration with 2 external drives connected via eSata to be faster than one 2TB (2x1TB) drive working in RAID 1 configuration. I am also wondering if my "RAID 0+1" will be much slower than one WD 1TB external drive (which is 2 drives working as RAID 0) or this is still comparable.
Thank you for your help. Much appreciated !
Marcin

Hi Danny,
Yes, I did read it, but it did not address my particular situation - i.e. all four drives connected to the promise controller.  The bits that do seemed to be saying "look at the manual", which isn't helping me.  Last night, I updated the mainboard bios to 2.4, which didn't make any difference, so I'm still stuck.
Thanks for taking the time to reply
Tony

  • How to use ExpressCard slot with MPB Pro?

    this questions may sound a little strange. I bought the MBP 15'' mainly because of the larger screen compared to the 13'' and the faster processor/graphics. It comes with a ExpressCard slot as well. How should I use the slot? I mean, which Card/Application/expansion is most recommended? Additional memory...? TV...? Where can I find such cards? Thanks for your comments/suggestions.

    there are loads of different types on amazon for sale

    however be careful as the macbook pro will only take express card 34 so dont buy anything that is express card 54- as they are bigger and wont go in the slot.

    The apps in the multitaskbar should appear like pages on the whole display. To close them, just swipe from the bottom to the top. you can select single apps for closing, when you swipe them like you would swipe your homescreens.

  • If I use Migration Assistant to transfer files a second time from my iMac to my Macbook Pro, will I end up with doubles of files on my Macbook?

    I used Migration Assistant from my Time Machine for my iMac to my Macbook Pro (I'm pretty sure) when setting up my new laptop to transfer files I wanted from my desktop; now I have new files on my iMac that I'd like to transfer, and I'm wondering if Migration Assistant will send files that I already transferred to my Macbook again, thus creating doubles of files on my Macbook

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    Migration Assistant creates a new account to transfer files from another Mac, so you will end with doubles of files on the MacBook.
    To avoid this, you can go with the easier way: get an external drive, copy all the files you have on your iMac to the external drive, connect it to the MacBook and copy the files on the external drive to the folder you want to.
    Another way is to transfer them through your network. If you have OS X Lion or Mountain Lion on both Macs and they are connected to the same network, use AirDrop to transfer your files. Simply open a Finder window on the iMac and choose AirDrop in the sidebar. Then, drag the files you want to transfer to your MacBook Pro's icon.
    Finally, if you have FireWire in both Macs, you can use Target Disk mode on your iMac (hold the T key while your iMac is starting), so your MacBook Pro will detect your iMac's hard drive as an external drive and you will be able to transfer whatever you need

  • Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE

    There's often a bit of confusion about this terminology: +*Time Machine+* vs. +*Time Capsule:+*
    _*Time Machine*_ is Apple software that performs backups, to an external HD, a Time Capsule, etc.; and also allows you to browse and restore from them. It comes with Leopard and Snow Leopard, but cannot run on any previous versions of OSX.
    A _*Time Capsule*_ is a piece of Apple hardware that combines a wireless router and hard drive, that can be used for Time Machine backups and/or other data.

    _*Q1. How do I set up Time Machine to back up to my Time Capsule?*_
    |
    First, set up your Time Capsule via +Airport Utility.+ Keep the name you assign to it, your Computer, and your network short (under 25 characters), and avoid embedded spaces, special characters, and punctuation (see item #P1 below for details). Make sure your Mac can connect via an Ethernet cable, if at all possible, as well as wirelessly.
    The setup and first backup (of your entire system) will be much faster if you connect via Ethernet.
    |
    a. If the +Time Machine+ icon isn't already in your Dock, drag it there from your Applications folder. See below for more about it's use.
    b. Right-click it and select +Open Time Machine Preferences,+ click the +Show Time Machine status in the menu bar+ box (see below), then click +Select Disk+ (on Leopard, this button will be either +Choose Backup Disk+ or +Change Disk).+
    c. A list of possible destinations will appear. It should include your Time Capsule (with the name you gave it via Airport Utility), and may show other internal or external drives as well. Select your Time Capsule and click the +Use for Backup+ button.
    d. A prompt for your name and password will appear. In some cases there won't be a Name field, but if there is, enter your short user name. Also enter the password you set up for the Time Capsule via Airport Utility, then click the Connect button.
    e. A 120-second countdown to the start of your first backup will appear in the +Next Backup+ area of the TM Preference panel.
    |
    Note that this first backup will copy the entire contents of your system, except for a few things that are skipped automatically, such as system work files, most caches, your logs, trash, etc., and anything else you may have excluded (see #10 and #11 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum). So it will be rather lengthy, depending on how much data is on your system, whether you're connected via Ethernet or WIFI, and if WIFI, how good the signal is.
    You can continue to use your Mac while TM is backing-up, and you can even cancel a backup if necessary, but to make this first full backup as fast as possible, try not to overload your Mac or cancel the backup.

    _*Q2. How do I set up Time Machine to back up to a USB drive connected to my Time Capsule?*_
    |
    Mostly the way you set it up to use the Time Capsule's internal HD.
    But first, attach the drive directly to your Mac, and erase and format it per the instructions in #5 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum. Note, however, that it doesn't matter whether you use the +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ or +Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, journaled)+ Format, since Time Machine will put your backups in a sparse bundle that's case-sensitive. You cannot change that.
    Unlike the Time Capsule's disk, you can partition the USB drive. That's highly recommended if you're going to be putting other data there, so the backups don't completely fill the disk (but be aware that Time Machine cannot back that "other" data up. See question #Q6 below).
    If you're backing-up multiple Macs to the same drive, you can make one partition for each, but it's not as helpful on a network drive, because each Mac's backups will be in a separate sparse bundle. So you can let them share the disk or a partition.
    Also note that if you've been doing backups to an external disk connected directly to your Mac, you cannot continue the same set of backups when you connect it to your Time Capsule. They are stored differently, and Time Machine will put them in a sparse bundle, alongside but *completely separate from* the backups made locally, and the first backup will be a full backup of your entire system.
    Once the USB disk is set up the way you want it, use the setup procedure in question #Q1 above, but in step (c), select the USB drive/partition, not the Time Capsule's internal HD.
    *RAID Sets connected to a Time Capsule:*
    |
    Time Machine will back up to a +Hardware Mirrored RAID set,+ also called +RAID 1,+ (sold that way, with multiple drives in the same enclosure). However, if you partition the +Hardware Mirrored RAID set,+ once you start using it with TIme Machine, you cannot change the sizes later and continue to back up to the same set of backups.
    While you can connect multiple USB drives to a Time Capsule via a USB hub (a powered one is best), Time Machine +*will not+* back up to a +software Mirrored RAID+ set (where you combine the drives into a single volume via Disk Utility).

    _*Q3. Can I use my Time Capsule for Time Machine backups and other data?*_
    |
    You can put other data on your Time Capsule's internal HD, but there are three major considerations:
    Especially for things like photos and videos, access may be too slow for convenient viewing, and worse for editing. So test this a bit before you decide what to put there.
    Time Machine cannot back-up that other data, so you'll need some other method. See question #Q6 below.
    Time Machine will, by design, fill up all the space available to it, so there may be a conflict between the sparse bundle it puts your backups in, and the other data. There is a workaround, to "reserve" some space there, by creating a disk image of the desired size and storing your data there, but it's a bit cumbersome, and two Macs can't share it at the same time.
    An alternative is to connect a USB drive to your Time Capsule. Then you can back up to the TC's disk and use the USB drive for other data, or vice-versa. But note that Time Machine cannot back-up the USB drive while it's connected to the TC (see question #Q6 below).
    If you want to reserve space on the TC's internal disk, here's how:
    |
    a. Start the +Disk Utility+ app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Click the +New Image+ icon in the toolbar (or select +File > New > Blank Disk Image+ from the menubar). If the little arrow to the right of the "Save As" box points down, click it so it points up.
    b. Give it a name in the "Save as" box. This name will appear on the TC's disk, with ".dmg" appended. (Similar to the way the sparse bundle containing your Time Machine backups appears, with ".sparsebundle" appended).
    c. Click your TC in the sidebar. It may take a few moments for Disk Utility to recognize it, and show it in the center pane.
    d. In that center pane, select the blue Share folder for your +Time Capsule+ (you may need to scroll down, or enlarge the window, to see it). Once selected, you'll see any existing disk images in the right pane.
    e. Give the Image a name. This name will appear on your desktop and/or Finder sidebar when you mount the .dmg by double-clicking it, if you have the +External Disks+ box checked in +Finder > Preferences > General+ or +Finder > Preferences > Sidebar.+
    f. Select the Size for the amount of space you want to reserve, either one of the pre-sets or Custom which allows any size. Avoid taking all the remaining space for the disk image, as Time Machine needs a bit of room to operate. Also note that if very little space is left, it will begin deleting old backups very soon, to make room for new ones.
    g. Select the desired Format, probably the default of +Mac OS Extended (Journaled).+
    h. If you want it encrypted, select the desired type.
    i. Select single partition, either GUID or +Apple Partition Map.+
    j. Select +Read/Write disk image+ for Image Format.
    k. Click the Create button. The larger the image size, the longer this will take.
    |
    When complete, the new disk image will be automatically mounted on your Mac's desktop, ready to receive the files you want to move into it. (When you first open a disk image, there may not be a sidebar and/or toolbar; if so, select +View > Show Toolbar+ from the Finder menubar.)
    To access this disk image from another computer, you must first eject it from this one, since only one can mount it at a time. Otherwise, the other one will see a message that the disk image is "Temporarily unavailable."
    Note that you may be able to change the size of the disk image later, via +Images > Resize+ from the Disk Utility menubar (while the disk image is not mounted or selected in Disk Utility's sidebar).

    _*Q4. My Time Capsule is too small to back-up my Mac(s). Now what?*_
    |
    You can attach a USB drive to your Time Capsule. Then you can back up to the USB drive instead of the Time Capsule's internal HD. If you have multiple Macs, you can back some up to the TC's internal drive, and others to the USB drive.
    If you need even more space, you can connect multiple USB drives via a hub (a powered one is usually best), and back up different Macs to each. What you cannot do, however, is have one Mac's backups continue from the Time Capsule's internal HD to a USB drive connected to it, or have the backups for any one Mac "span" two drives.
    The exception is, you can connect two (or more) drives that are in a +concatenated RAID+ set (sometimes called +RAID 0).+ In that configuration, all the drives in the set are treated as a single volume (see +Concatenated RAID+ in the Help for Disk Utility for details). This configuration may cause some other difficulties; once they're in a RAID set, you cannot connect any drive to your Mac separately -- it's all or none. And if one drive fails, you risk losing everything on all the drives in the set.
    See question #Q2 above for setup instructions for backing-up to the USB drive.

    _*Q5. Should I delete backups? If so, how?*_
    |
    It depends on exactly what you want to do, and why.
    Under normal circumstances, you shouldn't have to delete anything. TM automatically "thins" (deletes) backups every time it does a new backup, on the following schedule:
    "Hourly" backups after 24 hours (except the first of the day, which is a "Daily" backup).
    "Daily" backups after a month (except the first of each week, which is a "Weekly" backup.)
    "Weekly" backups are kept until TM needs the space for new backups; then one or more of the oldest weeklies will be deleted.
    However, TM will never delete the backup copy of anything that was on the disk being backed-up at the time of any remaining backup. So all that's actually deleted are copies of items whose originals were changed or deleted before the next remaining backup.
    But if you do need to delete backups, here's how:
    To delete individual backups, or all backups of selected item(s), see #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
    To delete everything on the Time Capsule's internal HD, use +*Airport Utility.+* Select +*Base Station > Manual Set-Up+* from the Menubar, then Disks in the tool Bar, then Erase.
    To delete everything on a connected USB drive/partition, you can delete via the Finder, but that may take a very long time. It may be faster to disconnect it from your Time Capsule, connect it directly to your Mac, and use Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to erase the disk/partition.
    To delete all the backups for one Mac, without disturbing anything else on the Time Capsule's internal disk, open the TC via the Finder and delete the sparse bundle associated with that Mac.
    To delete all the backups for one Mac, without disturbing anything else on a connected USB drive, either open the USB drive via the Finder and delete the sparse bundle associated with that Mac, or disconnect the drive from the TC, connect it directly to your Mac, and delete the sparse bundle from there.

    _*Q6. How do I back-up my Time Capsule and/or attached USB drive(s)?*_
    |
    That depends to some extent on what you want to back up, and where it is.
    It's generally not a good idea to try to back-up your Time Machine backups. If there's a problem with them, it will be copied to (and perhaps magnified on) the copy.
    A better solution is probably to use either Time Machine or a different application to make separate, independent backups of your Mac, to a different destination. A portable external hard drive is great for this; you can periodically connect it to your Mac, make a backup, then take it to a secure off-site location, so you're protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike on your power lines, etc. If you use Time Machine for this, you'll have to use the disk selection process each time you want to switch, via +Time Machine Preferences.+
    Many folks use the CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! apps to make "bootable clones" of their internal HD to an external HD. While these usually don't have "archived" copies of previous versions of things you've changed or deleted, you can boot and run your Mac from them if your internal HD fails. Your Mac may run a bit slower, but it will be usable. Both are easily found via Google.
    Since Time Machine cannot back up your Time Capsule's internal hard drive, or a USB drive connected to it, if you have other data there, you'll need a different method to back up that other data.
    In a pinch, you can disconnect a USB drive from your Time Capsule, attach it to your Mac, and copy or back it up that way.
    |
    There is a procedure that will let you "archive" the TC's internal disk to a USB drive connected to it.
    But it's not quick, since since the data must be read from the TC's internal disk to your Mac, then sent *back through the Time Capsule* to the connected USB drive. And it's "all or nothing" -- you can only use this procedure to copy the entire contents.
    All users will be disconnected from both the internal HD and the connected USB disk (but the network will remain usable).
    Attach a USB drive with at least as much free space as the total amount of data on the TC's internal HD (see #5 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum, for formatting instructions).
    Turn Time Machine "Off" via +Time Machine Preferences.+ Stop all processes that may be accessing the Time Capsule's disk. If possible, connect your Mac to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable -- it will still be slow, but faster than WIFI.
    Then follow this Apple procedure: Using AirPort Utility 5.3.1 or later to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk.

    PROBLEMS

    _*P1. The Backup disk image could not be created.*_
    |
    Oddly enough, Time Machine can be rather picky about the way certain things are named.
    Check your +*Computer Name*+ at the top of the System Preferences > Sharing panel.
    It must not be blank; it should not be more than 25 characters long; and you should avoid punctuation, spaces, and special characters.
    After changing it, click the Edit button and make the corresponding change to the +*Local Hostname.+*
    If that doesn't help, apply the same rules to the name of your Time Capsule and Network, via +Airport Utility.+
    +Go to Top+
    _*P2. Time Machine could not complete the backup .. sparsebundle could not be accessed. (Error 109).*_
    |
    The sparsebundle containing your backups is corrupted.
    Try Repairing it, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
    If the sparsebundle is on your Time Capsule's internal HD, and Disk Utility can't fix it, your only option is to delete it (or erase the TC's disk), and let Time Machine start over. You may be able to prevent this from happening again by changing the names per problem #P1 above.
    If the sparsebundle is on a USB drive connected to your Time Capsule, and Disk Utility can't fix it, it's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party +Disk Repair+ application, such as +Disk Warrior+ can. (You'll have to connect the drive directly to your Mac.) These are not cheap, and there's no guarantee they can fix it. Be certain whatever you use is compatible with your OS. For Disk Warrior, you need at least version 4.1.1 for Leopard, 4.2 for Snow Leopard.

    Can someone help me?How do I take the zoom feature off my MacBook Pro? I have already went to System Preferences and turned "zoom" off in the Universal Access. I saw where someone said to use THREE fingers to double click... ??? Double click what? And 3 fingers?

    What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
    What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
    What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
    And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.

  • Open file from table with double click

    Hi all,
    I use adf faces and JDEV 11.
    I want to open a file by double clicking on row in a table. (file is stored in the database).
    I first tried it with a button to open the file, with this code:
           System.out.println("Double click!");
           BindingContainer bindings = this.getBindings();
            DCIteratorBinding iter = (DCIteratorBinding)bindings.get("XxahelpBezoekRapDocView1Iterator");
            Row row = iter.getCurrentRow();
            FacesContext fc = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
            HttpServletResponse response = (HttpServletResponse)fc.getExternalContext().getResponse();
            response.setHeader("Content-Disposition","attachment; filename=\""+row.getAttribute("Filename").toString()+"\"");
            response.setHeader("cache-control", "no-cache");
            try {
                InputStream in;
                in = ((BlobDomain)row.getAttribute("Bijlage")).getInputStream();
                ServletOutputStream out = response.getOutputStream();
                writeInputStreamToOutputStream(in, out);
                fc.responseComplete();
            } catch (IOException e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
            } This is working fine.
    Now I wan't to open the file with double clicking on a row.
    For opening the file I use the same code in the backing bean and this code on the page:
          <f:facet name="metaContainer">
        <af:group>
            <trh:script>
               goEditRow = function(event) {
                    AdfCustomEvent.queue( event.getSource(), "doubleClickOnRow", {}, false);
            </trh:script>
        </af:group>
        </f:facet>And a clientListener and serverListener on the table:
    <af:clientListener method="goEditRow" type="dblClick"/>
    <af:serverListener type="doubleClickOnRow" method="#{backingBeanScope.backing_pages_EditTicket.doubleClick}"/>The only thing that happens when I double click is that I see "Double click!" in the console. But I can't save the file :S
    What is the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    What we do is to pick a table column for downloading the file.
    We change the component in the column to the an af:commandLink and add an
    af:fileDownLoadActionListener to the command link.
    The user clicks on the link to download (open) the file.
    Its not exactly the same as what you requested (double
    click on the row) but it might be another solution.
    Regards
    Paul

  • Unable to close open apps with double clicking the button and when I tap screen does not respond?

    Cannot not close open apps with double clicking the button Since downloading iOS8.

    What happens when you try? Does double clicking the ?home button bring up the Task Bar of recently used apps? If so what happens when you flick up on the preview screen for the app you want to close?
    To quit an app double click the Home button to reveal the row of recently used apps. Flick up on the page preview and it will fly away and disappear. That quits the app.

  • How to use CMS Users with SAP BOPC NW 7.5

    Hello,
    I have problems importing and using CMS Users with BO PC 7.5 NW.
    I am trying two types of CMS-users
    1. CMS Enterprise Users created in CMS and using "Enterprise" authentication
    2. SAP BW Users imported into CMS using their SAP authentication "secSAPR3")
    but both don't work:
    In the BOPC Admin Client, I can succesfully select Security->Users->"Add new Users". Both CMS "Enterprise Users" and CMS Users that use SAP authentication are displayed in the "Everyone" Group.
    The CMS Enterprise Users are displayed as <username>, e.g. "Miller".
    The CMS users with sap authentication are displayed as <SAPSystem><Client>/<SAPusername>, e.g. "KBE100/Smith".
    Now If I try to import a user...
    1. CMS Enterprise Users
    If can successfully import CMS Enterprise Users and add them to the ADMIN Team, e.g. "Miller".
    The problem is they can't be used to log in to the Admin Client and Excel Client:
    E.g. I enterUser-ID "Miller" and his CMS-Enterprise-password under password after starting Excel Client, an error message shows up: "The UserID, Password or Domain cannot be authenticated. Go back and make sure you entered valid credentials" ... (same error message as if the user wouldn't exist/wrong pw.).
    Seems the user wasn't added as BO PC user. Or do I need to use any prefix before the "user ID" for CMS Enterprise users in the User_ID field instead of just "Miller"?!
    2. CMS Users which use SAP-authentication (users imported into CMS from BW and use SAP-authentication)
    In the BO PC Admin Client, I can't import them: I go through "1. User Setup" select "KBE~100/Smith", "2. User Detail", "3. Assignments", but if I am in "4. Finish" and click on "Apply", the following error shows up:
    "Failed to create directory \root\Webfolders\<AppSetName>\<Appname>" for "KBE~100/Smith".
    My guess is that the operating system doesn't like the "/" in the Username - but I guess this can't be changed  bc. these Users from CMS and are already displayed with the "/" between SAPSystemID~ClientNummer and username in the User-list in BOPC Admin Client!
    side remark: if I create a SAP CMS Enterprise user which contains a "/" in the username (on pupose ), I am getting the same error message.
    Any help, explanations and workarounds are greatly appreciated - Any solution will be awarded with maximum points!
    Best Regards and thanks a lot for your help!

    Hi Florian,
    The problem seems indeed the file system on the bw not being able to handle "/". The automatic user import from the bw role into the CMC does not give you an option to replace the "/" character with anything else.
    This should solve it:
    - Go to the CMC double click the user. Delete the server part "KBE100/" and click save. Make sure the default system is set to "KBE100". The user should now be able to login from BPC with the user Smith.
    Good luck,
    Martin

  • Bug with double division ??

    Hello,
    first sorry my bad english...
    I am trying to convert a C program in java and i had a big problem with double division.
    For example, my program needs to do that :
    double d = 2. * 3.1415926 ;
    double d2=511;
    double d3=d/d2;
    The value in memory of d3 is 0x3f892e92965e074e whereas with my original C program, for the same code) the value in memory is 0x3f892e92965e074d !!!!!! (the last byte is different)
    So what is the problem ? Is the double division in java different with the C language or is it my code which has a problem ??
    Thanks a lot

    It could be different than (some implementation of) C, but that doesn't mean it's a bug or a problem. Java is supposed to implement an IEEE floating point specification; if you can demonstrate that it's not following that spec (I think it's IEEE 754) then report it as a bug. Incidentally, do Java and your version of C implement 3.1415926 the same way?
    (Also, if that number is supposed to be pi, then the inaccuracy you claim in Java is much less than the inaccuracy you made by using an approximation to pi.)

  • LightScribe SuperMulti DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support is no longer able to read all lightscribe discs(Blank or Containing Data)

    Hi,
    The product Name of my computer is: HP Pavilion dv6-6093ex Entertainment
    Notebook PC support
    The number of my computer is : LM610EA#A2N.
    Could anyone please at this splendid forum take some of their precious time
    out to really reply my questions and solve my problems?
    FIRST OF ALL:
    My HP Pavilion Laptop is about 3 years old.
    My
    sister's Dell Inspiron laptop is 3 years old.
    My HP laptop is well-cared, as opposed to my sister's Inspiron Dell laptop, which is always thrown in dust without caring at all. Also, its battery is always inserted even when it is fully charged while the laptop is plugged in to the main power supply.
    However, my laptop is either used on only battery, or on plugin. Also, it is kept from the dust. But, I really found that the battery of the Dell laptop still lasts about three and half hours, and there is no problem cooling fan is not properly properly.
    I only remember one thing differently done on my laptop battery which is I charged it fully, then I stored it without using it for about four months, then when I reused it, I found it got worse over time. I.e. first time of using it after storing,I found
    it empty, then I charged it again fully, however, then it lasted about 2 hours, then 1 and half hours, next an hour, now it is only lasting about 20 minutes without performance. If there is high performance, then
    the computer shuts down suddenly.
    My problem is follows:::
    First: Whenever I inserted any Containing Data OR  Data CD/DVD-RLightScribe discs, I found that HP optical driver was
    unable to read them. When clicking on the optical disc drive 'double-click' while disc was inserted, then I found that disc opened as this way(NOTE: With a CD/DVD player is grayed out)

    I cleaned the drive, discs, and so on.
    I have uninstalled the all third-party data recording software.
    I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software
    which came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
    I have recovered my system from the HP Factory Recovery discs.
    I have tried opening all those LightScibe discs not opening on my HP optical drive, on a Dell optical drive, and all of them were opened well, although Dell optical drive did not have a lightscribe feature at all., nor  third party disc recording software.
    However, the problem is still with opening the discs LIGHT-SCRIBE.
    Thus, my questions are:
    How to determine if the drive is corrupted and needs to be replaced with another one.
    I think there something needed to be done on the BIOS Of my HP laptop[[[A similar problems happened on my Desktop computer's optical drive which is as follows (ALL discs are opened as empty by Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer) ---while
    my optical drive of my desktop was connected to the
    primary slave IDE, and the HDD was connected to the primary master IDE, the optical drive and hard disk are functioning well. However, I remember that while burning an image with Nero essential V: 5, something went wrong, and
    then the Optical Drive of My Desktop Computer (HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NP20) became NOTrecognised/Installed on
    BIOS, although it was still shown on the device manager as a recognised device. Also, it was listed on my computer, however, when entering a disc(blank or with data) into the drive, I found it was not recognised, and it opened empty(no files
    at it), although it contains data. Thus, I decided to boot to BIOS, and clicked on 'Autodetection for IDE', then I found that only HDD was still shown as installed on BIOS.  However, the optical drive was not. Th I tried clicking on it on BIOS and then
    clicking on 'enter' to try to let the device be re-recognized. However, that
    made no difference. I had to take part my computer ,and then reconnected the optical drive onto thesecondary slave IDE , and let HDD connected to the same
    primary master IDE. Then, I found that the problem solved and all discs were read normally. Aslo, optical drive became installed on BIOS.
    What is meant with with double Layer Support.
    How much does it cost?

    Could you please really concentrate with me, and really reply to me to finish this problem pending.
    If you had had a look again at my first post, you would have seen that I said that I have done some things, among of which is: I have uninstalled the Cyber DVD suite, lightscribe system software
    which came pre-installed with my HP pavilion Notebook.
    Yes, you're right the two threads below are concerned about one issue.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itpromedia/thread/5c1aa5e8-9728-492b-a5c3-387f29ee4b6e/#d6f63628-29a3-4adf-b33f-03b33c138910

    However, this thread contains more precise details and screen shots about the problem. I was not able to understand whether all lightscribs were not unable to be read or not. However, I now recognized that, and I recognized that only all LightScribe(empty
    or used) discs are unable to be read. furthermore, that other thread got far too longer to be followed.
    Moreover, I would like you to take some time out to answer my problem about Lighstscribe discs since I am going to purchase 'A battery, Cooling Fan' From the HP agent in Yemen, which is far away from me about 1000 Km. Thus, If my optical disc drive was corrupted
    as well, then I would be requesting the 'optical disc  drive' as well from the HP along with 'Battery, Cooling Fan' .

  • SSIS importing comma delimited with double quote text qualifier - Works in VS - SQL Job ignores text qualifier and fails (truncation)

    I've created an SSIS package to import a comma delimited file (csv) with double quotes for a text qualifier ("). Some of the fields contain the delimiter inside the qualified text. An example row is:
    15,"Doe, John",IS2,Alabama
    In SSIS I've specified the text qualifier as ". The sample output in the connection manager looks great. The package runs perfectly from VS and when manually executed on the SSIS server itself. The problem comes when I schedule the package to run via SQL
    job. At this point the package ignores the text qualifier, and in doing so pushes half of a field into the next available column. But instead of having too many columns, it concatenates the last 2 columns ignoring the delimiter. For example (pipes are fields):
    15|"Doe| John"|IS2,Alabama
    So the failure happens when the last half of a field is too large to fit into the next available field. In the case above _John" is 6 characters where the IS2 field is char(3). This would cause a truncation failure, which is the error I receive from the
    job history.
    To further test this I created a failure flow in my data flow to capture the records failing to be pulled from the source csv. Out of ~5000 records, ~1200 are failing, and every one of the failures has a comma delimiter inside the quoted text with a 'split'
    length greater than the next ordinal field. The ones without the comma were inserted as normal and records where the split fit into the next ordinal column where also imported, with the last field being concatenated w/delimiter. Example records when selected
    from table:
    25|"Allan Percone Trucking"|GI6|California --Imported as intended
    36|"Renolds| J."|UI6,Colorado --Field position offset by 1 to right - Last field overloaded
    To further ensure this is the problem, I changed the csv file and flat file connection manager to pipe delimited, and sure enough every record makes it in perfectly from the SQL job execution.
    I've tried comma delimited on the following set ups. Each set up failed.
    SSIS Server 2008 R2 RTM
    DB Server 2008 RTM
    DB Compat 80
    SSIS Server 2008 R2 RTM
    DB Server 2008 R2 RTM
    DB Compat 80
    SSIS Server 2008 R2 RTM
    DB Server 2008 RTM
    DB Compat 100
    SSIS Server 2008 R2 RTM
    DB Server 2008 R2 RTM
    DB Compat 100
    Since a lot of our data comes in via comma delimited flat files, I really need a fix for this. If not I'll have to rebuild all my files when I import them to use pipe delimiters instaed of commas. I'd like to avoid the extra processing overhead if possible.
    Also, is this a known bug? If so can someone point me to the posting of said bug?
    Edit: I can't ask the vendor to change the format to pipe delimited because it comes from a federal government site.

    Just wanted to share my experience of this for anyone else since I wasted a morning on it today.
    I encountered the same problem where I could run the package fine on my machine but when I deployed to a server and ran the package via dtexec, the " delimeter was being replaced with _x0022_ and columns all slurped up together and overflowing columns/truncating
    data etc.
    Since I didn't want to manually hack the DTS XML and can't install updates, the solution I used was to set an expression on the textdelimiter field of the flat file connection with the value "\"" (a double quote). That way, even if the one stored in XML
    gets bodged somewhere along the way, it is overridden with the correct value at run time. The package works fine everywhere now.

  • What is best practice for using a SAN with ASM in an 11gR2 RAC installation

    I'm setting up a RAC environment. Planning on using Oracle 11g release 2 for RAC & ASM, although the db will initially be 10g r2. OS: RedHat. I have a SAN available to me and want to know the best way to utilise that via ASM.
    I've chosen ASM as it allows me to store everything, including the voting and cluster registry files.
    So I think I'll need three disk groups: Data (+spfile, control#1, redo#1, cluster files#1), Flashback (+control#2, redo#2, archived redo, backups, cluster files#2) and Cluster - Cluster files#3. So that last one in tiny.
    The SAN and ASM are both capable of doing lots of the same work, and it's a waste to get them both to stripe & mirror.
    If I let the SAN do the redundancy work, then I can minimize the data transfer to the SAN. The administrative load of managing the discs is up to the Sys Admin, rather than the DBA, so that's attractive as well.
    If I let ASM do the work, it can be intelligent about the data redundacy it uses.
    It looks like I should have LUN (Logical Unit Numbers) with RAID 0+1. And then mark the disk groups as extrenal redundancy.
    Does this seem the best option ?
    Can I avoid this third disk group just for the voting and cluster registry files ?
    Am I OK to have this lower version of Oracle 10gr2 DB on a RAC 11gr2 and ASM 11gr2 ?
    TIA, Duncan

    Hi Duncan,
    if your storage uses SAN RAID 0+1 and you use "External" redundancy, then ASM will not mirror (only stripe).
    Hence theoretically 1 LUN per diskgroup would be enough. (External redundancy will also only create 1 voting disk, hence only one LUN is needed).
    However there are 2 things to note:
    -> Tests have shown that for the OS it is better to have multiple LUNs, since the I/O can be better handled. Therefore it is recommended to have 4 disks in a diskgroup.
    -> LUNs in a diskgroup should be the same size and should have same I/O characteristica. If you now have in mind, that maybe your database one time will need more space (more disks) than you should use a disk size, which can easily be added, without waisting too much space.
    E.g:
    If you have a 900GB database then does it make sense to only use 1 lun with 1TB?
    What happens if the database grows, but only grows slightly above 1TB? Then you should add another disk with 1TB.... You loose a lot of space.
    Hence it does make more sence to use 4 disks á 250GB, since the "disks" needed to grow the disk groups can be extended more easily. (just add another 250G disk).
    O.k. there is also the possibility to resize a disk in ASM, but it is a lot easier to simple add an additional lun.
    PS: If you use a "NORMAL" redundancy diskgroup, then you need at least 3 disks in your diskgroup (in 3 failgroups) to be able to handle the 3 voting disks.
    Hope that helps a little.
    Sebastian
