Raid Driver and Kernel Module

I am having trouble getting the kernel to recognize the raid drivers which my card uses. The install of arch is fresh. The raid card is a HighPoint RocketRaid 2300. I browsed the AUR and found a PKGBUILD for an older version of the driver written by LoneWolf. I updated it to fit my needs.
The PKGBUILD I have is:

build() {
mkdir -p $startdir/pkg/lib/modules/${_kernver}/kernel/drivers/scsi/

The post install script I used is:
# This is a default template for a post-install scriptlet. You can
# remove any functions you don't need (and this header).
# arg 1: the new package version
pre_install() {
/bin/true
# arg 1: the new package version

# arg 1: the new package version
# arg 2: the old package version
post_upgrade() {

# arg 1: the old package version
post_remove() {
KERNEL_VERSION='2.6.35-ARCH'
depmod -v $KERNEL_VERSION > /dev/null 2>&1
op=$1
shift
$op $*
Executing the PKGBUILD with the makepkg command creates a .pkg.tar.gz file. Installing the package with pacman -U nameofpackage.pkg.tar.gz reports that the package has been installed. Running pacman -Qs reports that there is a package, local/rr231x-0x on the system.
The raid card is still not functioning. Instead of seeing a raid array I see the individual HDD's which are connected to the raid card which is something I could see even before running makepkg. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I have rebooted the PC but that has done nothing. Also running modprobe rr230x_0x or modprobe rr2310_00 returns FATAL:Module rr230x_0x/rr2310_00 not found.
Any help is appreciated.
Zlatan
PS. The md5sums in the PKGBUILD example I provided above is not the same one as the one in the PKGBUILD which is actually compiling on the server. The PKGBUILD above I recited from memory; however, I do not remember the actual number which I obtained by running makepkg -g. I will update as soon as I have access to the server again. I have updated the PKGBUILD above to exactly match the one im using on the server.

Oh, wow I didn't even notice that.
Modprobe was able to load the modules now; however, now I see the HDD's and the raid array. In other words running fdisk -l shows all of the HDD's connected to the raid card, /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, /dev/sdc as well as the raid array /dev/sdd.
The raid array has not finished building, so is it a possibility that that is why it is showing up. I will post updates when the raid array has finished initializing.

I think the new xorg-server is the problem as it isn't supported by this nvidia driver yet.
You could try to install the nouveau driver until nvidia comes with a new version of the 173 branch that supports xorg-server 1.10, see: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nouveau for information. As lower-grade options, you might also consider xf86-video-nv and xf86-video-vesa.
Should i uninstall nvidia driver, then install it?
I think thats the easy way yes, else you have to blacklist the nvidia kernel module.. check the wiki link of nouveau for details.

  • Can I pull out a RAID drive and use in an external enclosure?

    Hi everyone,
I have a Quicksilver with two identical drives formatted as a RAID setup (mirrored) and the G4 has reached its EOL (won't boot). Can I pull one of the RAID drives out and use in an external enclosure? Does the RAID formatting render it unusable in any other configuration? If that is the case, can I put the two drives into an external RAID enclosure?
Thanks in advance for any advice the community can supply!
    Cheers,
    James

    Hi-
Can I pull one of the RAID drives out and use in an external enclosure?
Yes. Not as the original RAID setup, but as a drive, or part of a new RAID.
Does the RAID formatting render it unusable in any other configuration?
No. Just reformat the drive, and it's a regular drive, ready to go.
If that is the case, can I put the two drives into an external RAID enclosure?
A RAID set does not have to be internal. External RAID sets can be created, and successfully used.
Use firewire, or, if SATA, an eSATA connection to PCI controller.....
If the drive is, as you say, EOL, I would write zeros to the entire drive before reformatting.
Give Disk Utility a chance to map any bad sectors......

  • Backup Software For backing up Raid Drives and main hardrive system

i'm, looking for the best software for backing up raid drives. i have rocstor raids. they said retrospect was best but after reading reviews they were not that good. i use super duper but they said for raid drives you need more than a free program
    any ideas
    thanks

I use Time Machine in conjunction with SuperDuper for my backups. I tend to use the simplistic of >the restores in Time Machine for restoring files whereas I like the speed of SuperDuper if a clone is >required. I also like the redundancy of multiple backups by different techniques.
Yes I think its a good strategy. Time machine is great for "undeleteing" if you see what I mean but a clone gets things working again very quickly after a disaster and even if you don't have time to restore you can still boot your computer. I have CCC do an incremental backup every evening at 3am.

  • RAID Driver and Firmware updates?

    In my continuing "learing activities"
I found that when Vista SP1 installed the RAID Drivers were V6.xxxx from sometime back in 2007
I found V 8.7.0.1007  of the RAID drivers on the intel site.
    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2101&OSFullName=Windows+V...
After I installed them I did get a nice GUI manager program showing all the drives and staus and so on and
at boot up a item shows up on the task bar for a short time indicating RAID status... then the icon disappears again...Anyway...
On to my real question... Lenovo offically has the drivers at 7.6.xxx
    http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-69823
These would match my (as-delivered) RAID firmware level which is also at 7.6.xxx
I recall times when miss-matched firmware vs. driver levels can cause issues on IBM server machines.
I'm wondering if that is the case here, and if so I can not see a place to download the FIRMWARE upgrades....???
    I was miss-matched before with s/w level 6.x and firmware 7.x now I'm still miss-matched...
Wondering if I should drop back to Lenovo V7.6 software drivers so that I AM matched up...
(This is still a "test" config so no harm done in any event ... I'm just playing....)
     Thanks,
    Jim

A valid drivefrom an array IS recognized if plugged into a different port on the motherboard
a rebuild is automatically kicked off.
if the drive rebuilds when moved then the system is assuming a failure.   afaik, drives cannot move ports without the system assuming something has failed, even if the drive itself is healthy.
yes, it did kick off a rebuild, I was just a bit surprised that it recognized it as HD member of the array since somewhere in the docs I read that the SAME port must be used when replacing a drive  ... I had just "assumed" (yeah, I know about the "assume" word   ;-)  ....) that the manager was doing it's thing JUST based on port assignments --  I guess there is a RAID signature on the actual drive somewhere...
The SATA port numbers on the motherboard do NOT correspond to the numbers reported in the RAID manager s/w. Motherboard numbering starts @ 1 while RAID mgr starts at 0.
socket 0 is the FDD socket.   i believe the RAID manager starts the first drive of the first array at 0 regardless of which sockets the array populates.
Hmmmmmmm that's not what I'm seeing .. I have a "regular" 34-pin cable connection on the MB for the FDD... which I am not using.. as I have the mult-card reader. I plugged my 2 optical drives into the two SATA ports on the front edge of the MB ( labeled #1 & #2) then plugged my two 1TB drives into MB ports 3 and 4 (which I have in a RAID1) and have the 250GB drive on MB port #5  with #6 being empty.
The RAID Mgr s/w reports that ports 0 & 1 are optical, ports 2 & 3 are used for the RAID1 port 4 is the 250Gb and 5 is unused. Not a big deal ... just not what I expected.
Since there is no easy way to tell which drive in an array has failed (no blinking LEDs like on the big server boxes) one needs to be careful to swap the correct drive in the event of a failure....
that's a feature i'd like to see in future models.   some sort of visual (and audible, for that matter) indication of drive status using simple red and green LEDs would be great.
in my case, without the LSI MegaRAID Storage Manager software, i'd have no idea what any of my five SAS drives were doing.   i found it on LSI's site purely by dumb luck.   in the event of a drive failure, it's set up to show a visual warning on the screen, email my personal account, and send a message to my blackberry.   if something happens, i'll definitely know about it.
    (edit: fixed formatting error)

    Oh yeah... you'll know ... either that or you're on a south-pacific atoll and don't care  ;-)

  • HT4833 logic files on external hard drive and kernel panic

I was using 2 external HDs via the Sonnet sata pro express34 card in MaBookPro. One ext. HD had only Logic project files, the other had plugins. Logic 9.I.7 installed on the MBP i7 late 2010 (OS 10.6.8), with Motu 828 audio interface via FW400. All this worked for a number of projects (simple stereo masters). Then Kernel panic damaging one ext HD with plugins. Then with just the other extHD connected, problems began. Trying to bounce a song, it stopped and froze, kernel panic with damage to the ext HD.
Seemed Logic could no longer work with the files on the ext HD. Don't know if this began before or after the HD was damaged.
First HD couldn't mount so turned off journaling, mounted and enabled journaling again. Have been backing up all on that HD via FW800, then will erase and format it.
    Second HD had
    "...Keys out of order
    Rebuilding catalog B-tree.
The volume ONETB could not be repaired..."
I backed up the files, erased and reformatted it. Waiting to try the setup again until the problem is figured out.
    1) I see there is also a Logic folder on the MBP with 3 projects in it. Did this confuse the program to have this on the internal drive plus a Logic folder with projects on the external drive?
Can I set up the program so all projects always stay on the external drive, instead of a default which created these early projects on the MBP drive?

I don't see how to edit my post above. I did not intend to title it "HT4833", that was just a page I'd looked at in the learning about Logic stuff, and this showed up in my question title. Strange there seems not to be a way to edit posts.

  • Alsa-driver and kernel from testing

    Hi!
This morning I ran pacman -Syu and there were question:
replace alsa-driver with kernel26 from "testing"
Are alsa drivers included now in the kernel, please?

lucke wrote:As tpowa indicated, alsa-driver was only used by kernel24 - as introduction of the new kernel26 drops kernel24 support in Arch whatsoever, alsa-driver is obsolete as well.
Thank you and tpowa too .
    Arch is better and better...

  • Using additional bays for a RAID drive, and an eSATA RAID question too

I'm thinking about getting a Mac Pro soon, and my hope is that I can use the main drive bay for the OS and apps, and then use two of the remaining 4 bays to install two drives that I can set up as a striped RAID array. It appears that this can be done without having to buy the $1000 RAID card, but before I dove in I wanted to check. I'm not worried about losing data, because I'm good about external backups, but rather need to handle many thousands of large photo files quite quickly.
Also, I've got an eSATA RAID set up on my G5 now, and I understand that there are two more SATA ports on the main board of the Mac Pro, and potentially I understand I could plug that in there. But I dread getting the message "you've inserted a drive that isn't recognized, etc.." Anyone know what problems I might encounter here? OWC offers a patch cord that plugs in to them and then goes in to one of the expansion card slots as a kind of extension cord.
    Thanks.

Right now on my G5 I have an external SATA two-drive RAID 0 enclosure (basically, just two 500gb drives in an OWC Mercury Elite Pro enclosure) that hooks up to the G5 by 2 SATA cables that plug in to a PCI card slot. My plan was, when I get the Mac Pro, to use the Newer Technology eSATA extender cables from OWC to hook up this drive box to to new machine. (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/MPQXES2/) From what I've read in these fora it appears this is possible, and it seems also to be possible to just use the RAID tool in Disk Utility to set up the internal drives on in slots 1-4 on the Mac Pro.
Primarily I'm needing improved speed for handling lots of large photo files in CS3 and Lightroom. Just from using the RAID setup I have now I've noticed some speed improvements, and with the extra processing power of the Mac Pro I'm hoping to see even more once I make the leap.
Thanks to all of you, by the way, for your input.

  • Systemd, pacman and kernel modules

Just a thought, once Arch has transferred to systemd, would it not be pretty easy to get pacman to install a conf file under /etc/modules-conf/ automatically, and remove it on uninstall?

That's already the case for several modules, e.g. tp_smapi, and is independent from systemd. Also see Tom's mail.
    Okay, so why the inconsistency?
    Tom's mail
The reasoning being that an admin is almost certainly not going to
want to install a package and then not follow the post-install
instructions. Conversely, on un-install (s)he is likely to want to
    revert these changes.
    Totally agree.

  • SATA Raid 0 and Overclocking Issues. Help!

I'm building out a machine that doesn't seem to want to overclock in the slightest bit.  I think my Serial ATA RAID 0 array seems to be the problem with OC'ing.  Each time I change the CPU FSB settings, when I boot up, it tries to detect my array.  Then it reboots after it fails.
Does anyone know what's going on?  Someone mentioned PCI Bus settings to me...???
On Anandtech they OC'd this chip to 2.6 Ghz (290x9) with an 8.3%+ in voltage.  I can't even get to 220.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!
    ======================
    System Setup:
    Athlon 64 3000+ Socket 939
    K8N Neo2 Platinum
    2 Hitatchi 80 gig SATA HD's
    Leadtek Winfast 6600 GT (AGP)
    Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu Heatsink
    Seasonic Super Tornado 400W PS

Ok, I switched it to SATA 3/4 and then I couldn't boot.  I kept getting some error which would cause it to boot again.  It happened right after it detected the array successfully.  The warning message happened so fast the first couple times I didn't even notice it.  It would flash some sort of blue screen like error (only it was a black screen) and then reboot itself.
Frustrated, I decided to start from scratch again.  I wiped out the discs and re-created the RAID 0 Array and put my WinXP CD back in.  Now while setting up WinXP I hang at the "Setup is starting Windows" screen.
It won't go anywhere from that.  It happens after I copy over the RAID Driver and Controller from the Floppy.  It copies more files after that and then hangs...
I also reset the CMOS with the jumper settings, un-did and re-did my SATA connections, even unplugged the little MB battery... :(
Any suggestions? This is so frustrating.
    TIA.

  • VFAT kernel module won't load [SOLVED]

I'm running kernel version 3.7.5 and after the update that got me to that version, it appears to have completely borked VFAT and kernel modules in general. My system still runs fine, but the vfat module is missing and cannot be loaded with modprobe or insmod. Oddly, the kernel object exists in /usr/lib/modules, yet my system seems to be ignoring it. Upon further investigation, it appears that it is impossible to load or remove ANY modules using modprobe or insmod. I recently did a reinstall of Arch, following exactly the steps in the Beginner's Guide, if that makes any difference.
Help? Please? I need the vfat module loaded before I can compile a custom kernel (my next big project)

  • RAID DRIVE WON'T WORK IN LINK MEDIA BROWSER

I have a RAID 5 drive connected to my MACPRO (MacPro5,1), OSX 10.9.2. Its working fine on OS. In Premiere Pro CC I can import files from it no problem, everything seems to be fine until I try to link media from it. The link media browser won't access it. I can see it, I can see the RAID drives icon, but it won't access the files.
In the link media browser it won't show on the Local Drives list on the left pane. When I double click on local drives, on the right pane I can see the RAID HD icon, but when I click on it it won't open it. It knows its there but can't access it. I don't get it. I can import files from it, etc, but not link files. I would have to redo the whole sequence with files from that RAID drive and its days of work.
I would appreciate enormously any help with this issue.

    Adobe CC 2014 v8.1
    iMac 27"  3.4GHz w/12GB Ram.
    OS 10.9.5
    OWC Mercutry ELite Pro Dual.
    RAID 0
    Thunderbolt.
No adapters or daisy chaining going on.
The RAID is new and only has about 700GB of data on it.
I read on Creative Cow that alexojedav522 was able to figure out that the size of the drive was his issue:
    https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/3/954245
After reading that I tried repartitioning my RAID into two sections of 2tb each (let's call them Partition1 and Partition2).
So Partition1 is just the original partition (which was 4TB) shrunken down to 2TB.
Partition2 is the brand new partition.
Oddly enough, I can access Partition2 via Media Browser just fine.
And when I move media onto it I can relink it as well).
But Partition1 is still not accessible via Premiere at all.
I am currently moving everything off of Partition1 and onto Partition2, so that I can at least relink my project and get to work.
But obviously that isn't a permanent solution.

  • Mirrored RAID drive removal.

I have 3 drives in my Xserve G5. 1 is 80GB and running as the system drive. the other 2 are 500GB drives which are both mirrored. I want to sacrifice the data redundancy and gain the extra 500GB for storage. I do not have a location to store the 400+GB of data that is stored on the mirrored RAID while I delete the raid. Is there a way to delete the RAID and then recover the data from one of the 2 drives and then format one of them to be blank? So far from what I am reading deleting a RAID set will make me lose my data I think... I am running the raid through Disk Utility as a software RAID.

    Chris
If you delete the RAID1 with disk utility you will lose the data, I can only think of one way to do this-
Pull one of the RAID drives and let the RAID become degraded, data will still be there on one drive
Insert the pulled drive and format with disk utility
Transfer all data from degraded RAID to freshly formatted single drive
Once transferred, delete degraded RAID and format drive to use as extra space
Now doing this without a backup would be very dangerous, and I would suggest that all data should be moved to another drive before doing any of this.
I use software RAID configs all the time and would not recommend that anyone run a server without some form of redundancy, they have saved mine and my client's bacon many times.

    Ed

  • Mac not reading RAID drives

I have been having problems with my ATA VideoRaid drive of sometimes the computer not recogning it and not mounting it to the desktop or finder. I go to the system profiler, and it recognizes it there. It is connected through a SCSI cable connection. I go to Disk Utility and it recognizes it also, it recognizes the ATA RAID drive, and it also recognizes it as the name I have given it, MediaExternal. But the MediaExternal portion of it has like a blank document image next to it.
The MediaExternal is the way I formatted the drive, Mac OS Extended. I have been having problems with this RAID, with it loosing sync during a video capture. I use this RAID with Final Cut Pro editing system. I have fixed the problem with the sync loss, mostly after buying Disk Warrior and basically erasing the whole drive, and trashing the preferences in FCP.
But now my problem is with the drive not mounting on the desktop or finder. Any advice!

It won't allow me to verify permissions or even repair them. It will only allow me to verify disk and repair disk, in which both of those came back ok. I really can't back anything up, because it won't even allow me to access the files.
