Raid mode and Win 8 features

Once you enable raid mode and win 8 features in bios, you will notice you no longer see the raid controller bios. The raid controller is now operated inside of uefi bios. You are able to create and handle the raid arrays from there. This is found in uefi bios > Settings >  advanced
The screen shots below were taken on a z77a-gd80 as a reference.

That is a screen shot of the bios from my old z77a-gd80.

  • X79A-GD45 Plus wont load windows with RAID mode

Hi all, I have this issue,
I have use this mobo for a year without any problems. I have attached C: system in port 0, and a 5 disk in the following ports (1-5) in RAID0, I dont remember the Intel i7 processor model. But like I said never had a problem
Yestarday I change the box from coolermaster to silverstone, so I took the mobo, i7, power supply, HDs, etc, and I did a fresh install windows 7 64 ultimate on the new silverstone
My problem is after the new win7 install, all MCI drivers from the original DVD, all windows updates, create RAID0 (ctrl I), bios in RAID mode, and everything configured OK, windows wont start, I get to windows logo, then the machine crash and reboot again
Also today I did a new win7 64 professional install and this time I use all the update drivers from MSI website and still can load windows, keep crashing when win logo appears
This happens in RAID mode with all 5 disks connected, even when they are not connected
AHCI and ide load windows and works perfect
I cant understand what is the problem, I will appreciate is some one can help me
    Thanks in advance
UPDATE: I think i did the win7 install when BIOS was on RAID mode, can this cause not loading windows? should be done on IDE or ACHI ?

I'm sorry, here is the complete info:

    Raid Card: extenal card NO
    Sound Card: NA
Any Additional hardware plugged into your system: Non
    OC: (Yes / No) NO
    Operating System: Win7 64 professional
I have installed windows 7 ultimate, professional, home premium , in IDE mode, ACHI and RAID mode and nothing is working
Windows is keep crashing when windos (logo) is loading, the only way I can load windows is in IDE mode, raid and achi mode I can't.
    Thanks in advance

  • Z87 g45 gaming...raid 0 and an ssd. Not sure i understand

I have been reading up this while my part are on a ups truck somewhere. Not sure i understand.
I realize that for the ssd the Sata needs to be set to achi before I install windows. Then Install windows 7 pro on the ssd.
Then I am lost. I bought this board because of the feature of inboard raid setup. Maybe all boards have this? This is all new to me. Trying to learn.
If the Sata is set to achi, will that screw up the raid?
Planned on raid 0 with two WD 1tb blue drives.
I read the manual, but didnt make sense.
Will this show up as ONE drive +\- 2tb in My Computer?

Nope. You Should set your MB SATA controller to RAID otherwise your OS dont know how to control it if you turn it to RAID mode after you have installed it in AHCI mode.
    - In RAID mode it controls drives at RAID array(s), like they are set (RAID 0,1,5,6,10,...) and those that arent in any RAID array it controls like AHCI and so on OS installation it installs drivers and register for it like so.
    - In AHCI mode it controls all drives like AHCI and so on OS installation it installs drivers and register for it like so.
Edit: So easyes thing is to set your SATA controller in RAID mode and install your OS thatway. Because, then you never have to worry about it as it has controllers to hole thing.
    - But if you Install OS (Windows) in AHCI it wont have correct registery or drivers for that same controller if you someday want to use other drives in any RAID and so you would get BSOD on loading/starting screen.

Nope it wont screw already existing RAID array, choose RAID to that controller again and you have your RAID array back. That is if you havent edit those drives in anyway.
Example: setting SATA controller back to AHCI is only way to upgrade drives Firmware if one is needed, as that software need to see the single drive in that array to do it.
Edit2: Seeing problem is on drives that are in RAID array and those that arent set in any RAID 0 array or so, should get thrue FW update just fine (there can be some exceptions on here) .

Yes, on your setup, that SSD would show as one drive and that RAID array as one drive. So you would see 2 drives where choose your os drive if you have them already setuped before OS install.
    - Every drive you add to RAID 0 array adds space without losing it and allso you get more speed after everey add to point where you get limits of cotrollers speed. That is, if you get there before you have populated all ports.
    - Every drive you add to RAID 1 array would add more secure of your data, but you would get only the space to use that your smallest drive have as all drives have 1 to 1 copy of every file.
P.s. when you install the Windows I recormend to have only that drive installed where you want your sytem be in! or your files can be stripped in every drive and then if one drive fail you may get weard BSOD's that are hard to get to!
Most likely this mess happends when one of the drives has already have OS in it on onetime of its life (formating the drives wont make difference).
Edit3: i personaly have used RAID 0 years and never have hade a problems. But if one of those drives fail, then i lose all my data on that RAID 0 array and thats why i go with oldsaying from the time when PCs start to make in the homes "Allways backup your files ! "

Two days ago, I loaded Light Room 6. Today I went back to Light Room 5. LR 6 corrupted an entire folder of images, and caused errors on my Raid 5 causing win 7 to run "Chk Dsk" and fix the errors to the operating system. LR 5 has not shut down for the last 5 hours. LR 6 has a serious bug. Anyone else experiencing this problem. Yesterday I was on tech support, waiting for 3 hours, finally they picked up and informed me there department was closing and someone else would call me on Monday. So, I'm working today and all day Sunday to make up for the down time using LR 6.
I don't know if the bug exists in the program or the "Creative Cloud.
Question: Does anyone know why if I bought Light Room 6 [NOT Light Room CC with the monthly rental], I have to enter my serial number if I want to use it?

Entering the serial number is probably part of the registration process.
Just out of curiosity, what were you doing on LR6 when the folder of images became corrupted?

If you are trying to install Windows on your Mac, that way won't work.
Read the entire manual before proceeding >   manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.8.pd f\

  • Ibm x60s and Win 7 - third mouse button plus nipple will not scroll in FF4

I have an IBM x60s notebook with Win 7. On previous versions of Firefox I believe I could scroll down a web page successfully using the laptop's centre mouse button and the red nipple mouse.
This seemed to have stopped working in Firefox 4 (main release) which I downloaded yesterday. The IBM mouse's scrolling action is enabled and works on other programs, so I suspect a possible bug.
    Your comments are appreciated :)

Some of you might not be satisfied by the OSX zoom behavior, but rather would like Ctrl+"mousewheel up/down" to increase/decrease content size per app. Like in Windows.
To be clear let's differ between the two features: OSX's whole screen (OS UI aswell) zoom and increase/decrease content size.
    Solution:
This is the solution I came up with, which allows you to use Ctrl+"mousewheel up/down" to trigger the latter feature, the content zoom.
    1) Make sure you aren't using Ctrl as a zoom key modifier in Settings -> Accessibility -> Zoom (I use Cmd instead)
    2) Download and install BetterTouchTools (BTT) it's free and updated regularly. http://www.boastr.net
    3) Open BTT Preferences, switch to advanced mode and chose "Magic Mouse"
Q: "But I don't have a magic mouse" A: "Doesn't matter, Normal Mice pane won't recognize mouse wheel scroll, so follow this guide".
    4) Press "Add new gesture", select Magic Mouse Gesture "Scroll Down (modifier key needed)"
    5) Set Custom Keyboard Shortcut to "Cmd + +" (don't be confused here, press Cmd and the button on your keyboard with a "+" (plus) sign)
    6) Do the same with "Scroll Up (modifier key needed)", this time of course add Custom Keyboard Shortcut to "Cmd + -"
You might have to do this per specific app to counter some unforeseen consequences using applications that already try to counter this (like MS programs, virtual machines and the like.)

  • Drag and drop feature is not working in Maverick?

what can i do when the Drag and Drop feature is not working in my I Mac Using Maverick 10.9.4, it will not do it at all i must do copy and paste.
reading from earlier forums this has been a problem in earlier versions for the mac.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • 890FXA-GD65 - Windows 7, RAID 0, and DVD Drivers

Howdy, first time poster, and first-time computer builder. I recently put together my first computer, and I'm having/I've had some issues that I wanted to get some expert consultation on.
First, I made a serious mistake the first time I assembled it: I screwed the motherboard directly to the case without the spacers. It would start up, but inevitably hard-crash after an indeterminate interval, probably because the vibration of the fans was enough to make the leads touch the case and ground the mobo, which crashed it hard. I've since put in the spacers, and the motherboard doesn't appear to have been permanently damaged; it still boots up, detects all SATA and RAM, and so on. Is there anything I can do to check if I've ruined anything in a subtle way?
Second, I have a couple of hard drives I want to stripe together as RAID 0, but when the MOBO is in RAID mode, Windows 7 lacks the drivers to communicate with the DVD drive. I think I have those drivers... on the DVD that came with the mobo, which Win 7 can't read. I've got a bit of a catch 22 here. How do I get those drivers on to the system?

Alright, I've consulted with the hardware guru at my work, and he insists - emphatically - that it should be possible to turn RAID on and off for individual SATA ports, especially since this is an MSI motherboard. I have pored over the manual in some depth and I absolutely cannot figure out how to do this.
Can anyone tell me how to exclude an individual SATA port from RAID mode?

  • CUPC – Unable to go into deskphone control mode and unable to chat

    Home Lab – learning Presence
    CUCM 9
CUPS 9 (not 8.6 as virtually all of the help and discussion forums, documents, etc are for)
CUPC 8.6 (3 copies running on 3 different laptops)
4 users configured in CUCM for Presence capabilities
    No LDAP integration
    Current status:
Presence indicators for phones works fine, no issues
3 users can log into their CUPC clients and Presence information from their own associated deskphone displays correctly (ie if User 1 takes his deskphone offhook, the CUPC for User 1 shows as “On the Phone”
Users can place phone calls with each other by typing the DN in the “Search for name or number” field
I have two different issues that I have not been able to solve all day – they may be related to each other.
The first issue:  I am unable to go into deskphone mode.  Although the checkbox is visible – it appears to be greyed out and clicking in it does nothing.
The second issue:  I am unable to start a chat session.  I highlite a contact (that I manually entered), right click, and select chat.  I get an error message that says “Failed to start conversation.  Invalid parameter”
I have scoured the Cisco site for docs and most of them pertain to CUPS 8.6 and not 9.  There is a difference in that v9 does not have the Application -> IP Phone Messenger selection.
    My current configs:
    CUCM
4 application users – CUPS-AXL (with Stand CCM SuperUsers permissions), CUPS-Deskphone, CUPS-CTIGW, and CUPS-PhoneMSG (all with Standard CTI Allow control of all devices).
3 end users – From top to bottom, all users have passwords and digest credentials.  Under Service Settings, all users have the “Enable user for Unified CM IM and Presence” checked.  This is the replacement for the assigning license capabilities from version 8.6.  Also under Service Settings, all users have a UC Service Profile assigned.  The UC Service Profile has two UC service settings – a Presence and IM Profile and a CTI Profile.  Under Device Information – all user have been associated to two different devices (their hardphone and the CUPC client).  Under the Directory Number Association portion – each user has their own primary line selected from the drop down box.  Under the Permissions Information section - each user has Standard CCM End Users and Standard CTI Enabled permissions.
Devices – each user has a 7960 hard phone and a CUPC.  For each device (both types) at the Device Level -> Owner User ID, Protocol Specific Information -> BLF Presence Group, SUBSCRIBE CSS are all set.  Under the line for each device (both types) – Allow control of device from CTI is checked, in the Associated Devices window is the MAC and UPC<name> of the devices, Under Users Associated with Line is the correct user
Under System –> Application Server,  the CUP server is configured.
Under System -> Licensing, all users and devices are licensed.  There is no Capabilities Assignment in version 9
    CUPS
Under Diagnostics -> System Troubleshooter -> all green except for the things not configured, LDAP, 3rd party, etc
User Management -> End User -> are licensed for IM and Presence and have Microsoft RCC enabled.  They also show 2 devices
Under Application – this is where its different from v8 to v9.
Application -> Legacy Clients -> Settings.  I have set the TFTP server IP to the CUCM
Application -> Legacy Clients -> CCMCIP Profile.  I created a new profile, set the Primary and Secondary CCMCIP Host to be the IP Address of the CUCM Publisher.  For Server Certification Verfication, I selected Any Certificate from the drop down.  I assigned this profile to all 4 of my users.
Application -> Microsoft RCC settings.  Application status = on.  For Application Username and password, I have tried using CUPS-Deskphone and CUPS-CTIGW with their appropriate passwords.  There is not difference in using either one of them.  CUCM address is address of my Pub.  I assigned this Microsoft RCC service to all 4 of my users.
So, as I said, I have been working on this all day today burning my fingers and my mouse up on Google.  To no avail.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Jeff

    Update –
Well, I finally bit the bullet and stood up a MS AD domain in my lab.
I integrated CUCM into the LDAP and imported the users from LDAP
I also stood up a DNS server.
I reconfigured CUPS to the new domain, joined all of the endpoint laptops to the domain, and retested.
Same place as I was before with the deskphone mode – however, my ability to IM is fixed (as was expected).
Using CUPS, I am not able to go into deskphone control mode.  The option box is still greyed out.
However, I installed Jabber for Windows on the same laptops.
In Jabber, I am able to select the option at the bottom of the window to use my deskphone for calls, and then I can move it back to the Jabber client.
So, anyone have any ideas why CUPC refuses to let me go into deskphone control mode?
All features and functions of the JFW work great.  No problems.

  • Why is ipad2 still online and active when supposedly in lost mode and locked?

    hey all,
i need some help regarding a situation i'm in!! the overview is i'm going through a messy breakup at the moment and my ex has possession of my ipad2 (a wi-fi model that's running ios6)!! it's supposedly for my 7 year old son's use (he's autistic)!! anyway, since it's registered to me, i had restrictions enabled with a 4 digit pass code where i had location services turned on, and i disabled my mail account and other things that would not be appropriate for my son to use or access, such as skype, facebook, etc!! basically, all that was on it was his game apps, safari, youtube and our photos of days out etc!! my ex was paranoid i was spying on her through the location service....... i explained that it was a security feature that would enable it to track it if it was lost or stolen!! she even thought i was listening to her conversations and watching her through the camera!! i explained this was absurd and paranoid!! anyway........
well, here's the problem!! after having the restrictions enabled for months, oddly enough after receiving a summons last week requesting her to attend court next week concerning the matter of my contact with my son, i noticed yesterday on my find my iphone app on my icloud account on my macbook the locations services was disabled and the ipad was online, being used!! realizing immediately she's obviously figured out my restrictions pass code and turned off the locations feature!! i immediately put it into lost mode (receiving an email confirming), and within minutes, it was offline for about 4 hours!! in the afternoon, i checked it again, lost mode was disabled and it was being used....... so i put it in lost mode again! 30 seconds later, it was disabled........ finally, i put it into lost mode and added a message that would be  displayed on the screen stating 'be warned: i am aware you are using my passcode and password without my permission, which is a criminal breach of my privacy! ignore this & i will report to the police!'! it went offline! 7pm i received a text to my iphone asking my my son couldn't access the ipad and why was there a request to phone her! i ignored, as i know this was a game!! whilst in work, i received an email to my icloud mail inbox stating that 'lost mode had been enabled'......... making me realize she must also have access to my apple ID to gain access to icloud to enable lost mode! it stands to reason that you cannot tell the device you are actually using it is lost and lock it down!! finally, i updated the lost mode with a new message stating i was going to the police and she freaked out!!
so, that's the situation! the questions i need answered are:
*aside from a lucky guess, how else could she get my pass code and icloud pass word? is it possible the ipad has been jailbroken, hacked or spyware has been used to get my pass code and password?
*how come, when in lost mode, it says on the find my iphone feature on icloud that it's active (green spot) and 'online: location services disabled'? should lost mode not render the device unusable? i monitored it for at least an hour last minute...... it kept changing it's status from 'online: location service disabled' to simply 'offline'!
*in the 'find my iphone' app on icloud, next to the lost device, there's a symbol of an orange padlock! what does this actually mean? if it means it's locked, then how can it be online and seemingly active?
just to cap off, i've requested the device be returned to me (my ex has ignored this, stating only she intends to replace this device so she's free from my control and spyware) and i've contacted my solicitor who has offered to send an official letter requesting it's safe return!! as the device is registered in my name and contains my personal information, i understand the implications for her is that she's committed theft and possibly used criminal means to invade my privacy!!
any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
    alex

just giving this a wee bump as time is of the essence here and i need advice/ answers quick!
apologies if i've broke any rules!

  • IPod Touch 4g stuck in recovery mode and lock button broken

A few days ago my lock button stopped functioning, and seeing as I'm not brave enough to try and fix it myself and I haven't been able to take it to get fixed anywhere yet, I just enabled the internal lock button feature and, frankly, hoped for the best. This afternoon I connected it to iTunes because after updating to iOS 6 too many things have been going wrong. There was an error message (I can't remember which one :S) but stupidly I decided to restore it (mainly in the hope that iOS 6 would sort itself out I guess). Once it had finished extracting files, there was another error message, which again I can't remember, but it was something along the lines of iPod cannot be restored basically. Then it went into recovery mode, and I've been unplugging, plugging in, shutting down my computer and all sorts of things all evening. As far as I can tell, the only way out of recovery mode is to hold the lock button and the home button down for thirty seconds ish until the apple logo comes up. Except my lock button doesn't work. I guess I'll just try and get it fixed this weekend but if there are any other solutions that would be awesome! Thanks!

    - Let the battery fully drain and try again to restore after charging for at least an hour.
    - Try on another computer
    - See if you can cycle the iPod in and out of recovery mode with:

  • Battery time and enhancement features

Smartphone’s are known for consuming a lot of battery power and depending on your configuration your phone might last longer or shorter than other phones. This topic contains some advice and info about what you can do to increase your battery time.
When using your new Android phone it will take approximately up to a week or so before the phone settles in its battery usage and power management, depending on applications installed and the amount of content in your phone. It’s worth mentioning that this evaluation that the phone runs in the background at first period of use will happen again after master reset or reinstalling/repairing the phone software. So if you have just reset or reinstalled your phone, this power management evaluation process will run again. So it might at first seem like your phone is consuming more battery power than before the reset, but its normal.
If you have been using your phone for a couple of week and still think that the battery time is a bit too low, here’s some advice that will increase the battery time.
First of all make sure that your phone is running on the latest version of the firmware. You can use PC Companion to check for software updates for your phone.
    http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/pc-companion/
Or Bridge for Mac if you’re a Mac user:
    http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/bridge-for-mac/
You can also check battery consumption via the menu; Settings > About phone > Battery use, or Settings > Battery, or Settings > Power management > Battery.
Things that can be disabled or reduced when you don't need them:
    Dim the screen
    Disable live wallpaper if used
Turn off 3G (WCDMA), 4G (LTE).
    Turn off mobile data traffic
    Turn off Bluetooth®
    Turn off Wi-Fi®
    Turn off GPS
By doing this you will increase your battery time. But if you're still experiencing a low battery time you can try the following as proposed by many users on the forum. (Only applies for phones using removable battery)
When phone reaches 50% in battery level turn it off and pick out the battery for a few minutes. Put it back and connect the charger, now charge the phone turned off for about 5 hours or overnight. Start the phone as normal and check if the battery life time has improved.
You can also let the phone drain the battery completely until it turns itself on and won’t start again.
At this point connect the charger but do not turn on the phone, leave it charging while turned off until the battery indicator on the screen is completely filled.
Also make sure that you’re using a Sony original charger.
    Battery enhancement features
    Extended standby mode
Use the extended standby mode to make the battery last longer. Your Wi-Fi® connection, data traffic and unused applications are then paused when the phone is in standby. You can still receive phone calls, text and multimedia messages. Once the phone is used again, all paused functions are resumed.
You can enable/disable Extended standby mode via Settings > Power management. (Depending on model)
    STAMINA mode
It has already been mentioned a couple of times that Smartphone’s use a lot of power, even when you’re not actively using them. All those app’s that you have on your phone may still be running in the background, draining your battery. STAMINA mode is a further development of Extended standby mode and saves wasted battery drain by recognizing when your display is off and turning off functions you don’t need, while keeping the notifications you want. As soon as you wake up your Android Smartphone, everything is up and running again.
    Get only the important notices.
With Battery STAMINA mode, Wi-Fi® and data traffic are disabled during standby, but you still receive incoming calls, texts, and alarms. And since everyone has different needs, you can easily customize which app's you want to receive push notifications from even in standby mode. Facebook notifications on or off? It’s up to you.
The STAMINA mode will constantly re-evaluate your usage and update the expected standby time accordingly.
This standby time will completely vary depending on your own personal usage. You may see that when you first start using your handset, the Standby time will be higher than what is expected after you have used the handset for a few days. This is due to STAMINA mode having no previous usage history to estimate from.
If you have a very high usage level, you may only see a slight improvement between having STAMINA enabled and disabled. STAMINA mode is more effective the more often the display is turned off as this is when the power saving features kick in. If the display is rarely turned off, you may not see much improvement in the battery performance.
You can enable/disable STAMINA standby mode via Settings > Power management. (Depending on model)

I recently purchased a Z68A-GD65 (G3) motherboard, i5-2500K, 8 gb ram, and a Crucial 64GB 4m SSD drive. The intention was to use the SSD drive for Intel Smart Response Tech.
Instructions tell me to place the SATA ports in RAID mode, which I did. During installation of Windows 7 (64-bit), I provided the "F6" raid drivers which installed. After that point, my hard drive (a WD 250GB SATAII drive) begins to perform incredibly slow. Once Windows 7 installs, which takes way longer than it should, Windows has problems booting and won't work properly.
I tried installing Windows 7 without the "F6" raid drive on install and that worked fine. Everything seemed to be working great. I then installed the Intel Rapid Storage Tech software and rebooted. Now my system is acting up again. It takes far longer to boot, it shuts down as soon as it boots, and it has even blue screened on boot. It is very unstable.
My SSD is unplugged during all of this. I'm just trying to get Windows 7 to run properly on my one mechanical drive in raid mode.
Do I have a bad motherboard? Anyone have any ideas?
Edit: I'm not using the Marvell ports. The hard drive works fine in IDE/ACHI modes... I've been using it for years.
    Thanks

So it turned out that the issue was the hard drive itself. It had been running flawlessly for years as my system drive. However, the Intel iastor driver exposed a hidden issue with the drive.
I decided to check the Windows system event log for any clues. In there I saw errors with event id 9 on iastor. They were lined up with the times of the hangs and blue screens. Solutions I found online for this issue did not help. Luckily I have two hard drives in my system, although they are both the same model. I moved my data around and clean installed Windows on the other drive instead. The hangs and blue screens are no longer occurring.

  • Mac Pro -- Installing XP and Win 7 on a SEPARATE Internal Drive

I would like to install Windows XP SP2 and Windows 7 onto the second Internal Drive in my Mac Pro. I am planning to install Win XP on the first partition and Win 7 onto the second Partition of Drive 2.
    Will this work?
    Drive 1 - GUID partition Scheme -- 1 partition -- Snow Leopard
    Drive 2 - MBR Partition Scheme -- 2 partitions -- WinXP -- Windows 7
    Drive 3 - MBR Partition Scheme -- 3 partitions -- Linux
Drive 4 - MBR Partition Scheme -- 1 partition -- NTFS Shared Data
Can I use MBR or do I need to use GUID Partition Scheme on my second drive holding Win XP and Win 7?
P.S. I do not plan to use Bootcamp assistant to install WIndows XP and Win 7. I only will be using the Mac OS X Install Disk to install the Bootcamp Drivers.
And What does this mean in the Bootcamp Guide:
"Note: If your computer has more than one internal disk and you want to install
Boot Camp on a disk that isn’t in the first hard drive bay, remove the drives in the lower numbered bays. You can reinstall the drives after you install Boot Camp."
What does Apple mean by lower number bays? Drive 1 or Drives 3 and 4?
And why do I need to remove drives?
    Rob

I thought it might be possible, and while you must use MBR, and while Windows 7 can install on its own without BCA, the same is not true of XP. People have tried, and the conclusion was a no go.
    Don't know what Linux requires.
GPT is fine for data drives though, and is required when you get into drives of 2TB and larger.
As long as you format the drive partition table as MBR you are fine.
The only time when you used GPT you have to also use BCA to add the MBR and have a hybrid partition. GPT actually includes an "MBR holder" to prevent XP and others from wrecking havoc on GPT volumes that they don't support.
Never used XP, and for one purpose alone I just used XP Mode instead.
Apple tech notes are full of misinformation and support for Windows on their own Macs is sadly missing.
BUT: remove any and all drives that are GPT or have OS X during the install of Windows (both XP and 7). Otherwise it won't install. Then put them back. And if you want to play safe, then use the drive bay #1 at the front of the Mac for Windows, yes.
