RAM Cache Disappears

Hello,
I've been having an issue where the RAM cache disappears as soon as the RAM playback is stopped.  Just to be clear, I'm referring to the green indicator along the top of the timeline so you know which frames are cached.  This happens on various computers in our facility.  It seems to be more common when multiprocessing is enabled.  It also happens if you tell After Effects to RAM preview and then switch to another application.  After Effects will complete rendering the RAM preview in the background, the icon will bounce in the dock to let you know it's ready, but nothing is cached when you switch back to After Effects.  This is something that I've noticed for a couple of years over multiple versions of After Effects both at home and at the office.  It seems to happen fairly consistently with specific comps which makes me wonder if it's related to any of the effects that have been applied in that comp.  Any information regarding this behavior would be very much appreciated.  Thanks!

We have seen this ocassionally happen when Render Mutliple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing is on. If you have a specific case or cases where this is happening, please submit bugs.

  • Games crash when RAM cache goes over to swap.

I'm not sure if this is the right subforum, but it was the most relevant available.
I have 6gb of RAM, which is plenty for me even though i use alot. There's an issue however, and that is that many heavy applications such as games like Garrys Mod or Elder Scrolls Online under Wine crashes when the RAM cache exceeds those 6gb. It's supposed to go over to SWAP, but heavy applications simply just crash instead which is very annoying. I do not know why it just crashes, since i always have at least 1500mb of free swap available, and since it's just for cache and not reserved memory that should be fine. Sometimes an excessive amount of cache is used, and i'm not sure what is using up all of it which makes me have to reboot my computer to be able to play games without crashing which is very annoying.
Here's a pic and a ps aux of one of those times where excessive cache is used for unknown reason

Not a fix, but got my system to be more stable atleast.
Wrote a bash script that simply clears cache every minute. Very dirty, but it's better to have a stable and slow system than a system that crashes from time to time.
    while true; do
    echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches
    sleep 60
    done
simply execute as root and you're good to go.
Will continue to try to find the root of the problem though.

  • Ram cache access problems

I recently installed some new RAM in my 17inch iMac iSight. The new 1Gb of RAM was recognized by the computer and worked fine for about 1 hour, then crashed. Since then, on restarting all I can get is a grey screen, and after 20 seconds the cooling fan goes ape and I get a message saying I need to shutdown.
I guess there's a problem with the new RAM, but I can't open the cache to take it out ! The screws undo, but won't come free (after coming out a few mm they just turn without effect) so I can't get the plate off to access the RAM - any suggestions as to how to get in ?
    Cheers

    Hi
    Alex
Thanks, but I managed to open the cover without problem to install the RAM, (as you say the screws are designed not to fall out or get lost) but now I want to remove the RAM, the screws are not playing ball - It's very strange, in that they come loose but won't allow me to take the cover off.
I'm afraid to force them too much in case I can't get them back in after.
I might have to resort to opening up the iMac, and that seriously worries me.

  • Near caches disappearing on cluster leave then join

In the situation where a node gets dropped from the cluster, either because of GC pauses, network problems or whatever, normally it will manage to join back into the cluster and all of the distributed caches come back. However it seems that near caches are not recreated when the node rejoins the cluster. This is very problematic as although the system seems to be healthy, its performance is dramatically reduced.
Why are these caches not being recreated? Is there some configuration to ensure this happens?
This is using Coherence 3.4. I haven't tested the 3.5 behavior yet.

    Hi CormacB,
I guess you are referring to the fact that during "disconnect" the content of the front tier of the near cache is cleared. It is done to prevent the client using stale data. After the re-connect, the front map will start "refilling" from the back tier as the application gets the data, which is no different with what happens upon the near cache initialization.

  • RAM keeps disappearing

I keep re-seating a 1gb stick and it randomly keeps disappearing on my 20" 2.1 G5. Anyone encounter this problem.
Since 2gb sticks are cheap enough, I'm considering upgrading but, given the dead slot in my PBG4 I wonder if this has occurred on this Imac?

It will work, but at the 4200 speed. This is what is spec'd for the the various iMac models:

  • Disappearing RAM Previews

Uh oh.  Is it my (Windows Vista) machine going downhill or is this an After Effects CS4 thing?  I'll do a RAM preview - standard definition, maybe 10 seconds, no biggie .. and after I get a green solid line I'll play the preview.  Once I play the preview - POOF - part or sometimes all of the RAM preview disappears and I have to re-render the region.
    Preferences:
I don't have Multi Processing on.  I am not writing to a disk cache.  I have Prevent DLL Fragmentation on.  32 levels of Undo.  Files are local on the drive - nothing external.
It seems like a recent thing too, and I haven't changed anything.  I also find that I'm waiting more and more for the dreaded Locking Existing Frames in the Info box.
    Version 9.0.2.42
My misery would love some company,
    Thank you,
    Marc

Any recent updates on the graphics card or audio driver?
    No.
    Media Player?
As in do I have Windows Media Player?  Yes.  Version 11.0.6002.18065
    Any alternate video players installed?
Just Windows Media Play and Quicktime.  I even tried upgrading
Did you do some system maintenance - cleanup with CCleaner, defragmentation, scandisk?
No.  I have plenty of space too ... 55GB.
    What source footage?
Doesn't matter - it happens with everything and anything.  From just Illustrator parts to timelines that are just cuts of Quicktime movies to AVCHD .mts files.  Each has the same Locking Frames delay and then disappearing sections of RAM previews.  Operative word by the way is SECTIONS - not ALL of the preview will disappear.
    What effects are involved?
Nothing specific.  It even happens on layers that even feature NO effects.
    OpenGL?
    Nope.  Off.
I know ... it's a real humdinger.  There doesn't seem to be anything that screams out, "You have the 'erase RAM previews' checkbox checked".

  • Why Itunes doesn't cache the played file in ram?

Maybe this question would fit better in the developer forum,
but I hope to get some hint from users here:
I noticed that when you play a file in Itunes,
instead of putting the file in the ram and read from there,
Itunes reads continuously from the hd, at a rate of about 30 kb/s,
some more some less depending on the bitrate of the currently playing mp3.
I think this is really a far-from-ideal way to go,
it would be much better to store the file in ram cache when it starts playing and read from there,
so the hard disk usage would be spared, and power comsumption as well.
Could simply an option be added in the Itunes preferences, sorta "Pre-Load file in ram"?
My hard disk would be happier and see many more moons I guess, as well as my laptop battery.
Maybe you think it's irrelevant for the hd life-cycle, or that they're so cheap now that
"who cares, I'll just buy a new one when this gets cracked",
but think in a larger scale and you'll see how much energy and waste could be avoided.
All the fuss about ecology shouldn't be just a marketing tool.
If anyone is with me, let's make a feature request to apple,
    bless ya all,
    kk

also, when I did the show parameter I got the following results:
    SQL> show parameter spfile
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    spfile string
    SQL> show parameter pfile
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    spfile string
I did startup the db with pfile and open it with resetlogs. I created spfile from pfile. Why I'm not seeing the location of the pfile or spfile? Could you please help me understand this?

  • Bridge memory leak/using too much ram

I just built a new PC tower for business use and installed PS, ID, LR, and BR CC trials.  I already have all of these (CS5) on my personal laptop, all work fine.  Bridge on the new tower has been using WAY too much ram/caching too much and crashing everything.  I'd changed cache preferences, purged the cache several times, and within days it is back at it again.  PC specs: 8 core AMD processor, 16GB ram, 2x 3TB HDD
This is being used to show photos, edit, burn and print at events.  I cannot keep closing bridge every half hour to keep my computer running.  Right now bridge is NOT keeping 100% previews in cache, exporting cache to folders, cache size is about 25,000.  If bridge is going to crash every half hour on a machine with 16GB of ram, while CS5 ran fine on my laptop with only 4GB something is seriously wrong.  At this point I don't know if I should actually subscribe to CC or just move my CS5 to this new computer.

I have tried to analize better what happens. In the dashboard I only have a calendar, a calculator, a clock and one postit (but there is nothing writen on it). If I use something in the dashboard, for example, the calculator, and I do some multiplications, after a couple of minutes the use of memory of the dashboard starts to increase. I closed any other program and in some minutes I have sen how it increased until I stopped the process when it was using more than 2GB! (you can see it in the picture). It's very strange! (Thank you very much for your help!)

  • I have more ram than about my mac shows...

I just updated from 10.4.6 to 10.4.9 after bringing my computer home from the studio to hook it up to the internet. When I updated to 10.4.9, I went to about this mac from the apple menu, and it showed 10.4.9, dual 2.5 powermac g5, and 3.5 gb of ram. But I have 4gb of ram. I have 4 1gb ram modules. Unless, I opened it up and didn't see 4 other ram modules in there.
I'm not sure why the OS update would cause 512mb of ram to disappear. I read another post where someone mentioned the ram not showing correctly in about this mac and having to replace the logic/motherboard. I don't know why that would coincide with an update, unless it was just bad timing.
I also had to move the system and thought maybe a ram module got jostled loose in the ride over. Are there four ram slots in the powermac g5 2.5 or eight? Could there be a loose 512mb module?
    Please help.
powermac g5 2.5ghz dual   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   updated from 10.4.6 and this happened.

  • What Exactly are the Benefits of More GPU RAM for PP, AE, PS ?

What benefit is there to having, say 4gb GPU RAM over 2gb ?
I have read numerous conflicting, and perhaps misguided, claims regarding when/why one would rather have a graphics card with more than 2gb RAM.
Does this impact effects render, multiple monitor resolution, CUDA, Mercury Playback Engine performance, other areas, etc. and how?
    Thanks for your response.
    A Ajar

2GB of video ram is more than enough for the Hardware MPE engine and 1080 media with effects. Essentially the greater the ram space on the video card the greater ram caching available for the Cuda acceleration to buffer data ready for GPU processing. The Application memory management ie caching profiles though effect this based on each codec and resolution ie data per frame. However along with this you have to have enough system ram to create the buffers used to cache the data down to the GPU ram since that data shadows down for GPU processing and then back again for final encoding. This means that not configuring enough system ram will limit the amount of GPU ram used. Hence why you want atleast 16GB of ram for HD and the hardware MPE engine. 3GB+ ram spaces on video cards are for 2K to 4K + frame sizes ie R3D and Raw/CinemaDng. This is because the data per frame multiplies significantly when at 4K resolution. This require far greater ram space which is why you look for the 3GB+ ram space cards for those workflows. The Effect data will also increase because there is far mroe resolution data to alter. This is on top of the drawing out data which is what you see on the screen. That is when the differences for the cards show.

  • OBIEE 10g: Presentation Cache in Second Instance of Presentation Server

    Hi everyone,
I've been having an issue with my presentation cache disappearing every couple of minutes.
I'm working with OBIEE 10.1.3.4, on Oracle Application Server on a Linux RHEL 5.4 32bit. I've spun up a second instance of the presentation service using the commands from RNM1978's blog here (http://rnm1978.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/multiple-rpds-on-one-server-part-2-presentation-services/). The reason why I have a second instance of the presentation service is for mobile reporting purposes. We have lots of executives using iPhones and the Oracle Business Intelligence Indicators application. The second instance defaults all charts to be PNGs, it also uses a separate, clean catalog, so that the executives don't get lost in all of the out of the box BI Applications content that is in our main catalog.
Everything is setup and working properly, both presentation services are accessible and use the same RPD but different catalogs. The only thing that isn't working is the presentation service cache. A lot of these reports are QTD or YTD so it takes a few minutes to run some. We were hoping to use iBots to create BI Server cache at the beginning of the day. That seemed to help a bit but it seems to clear after a few minutes.
Additionally, before we went to do demos to end users, we would run all the reports from a demo iPhone. Go to do the demo and within five minutes, the presentation cache would have already cleared. I confirmed the same by looking in the Session Manager of the second presentation service.
Does anyone know why this would be happening? I have cache turned on in the bi server and I also have the following settings in my instanceconfigMobile.XML:
    <Cache>
    <Query>
    <CacheMaxEntries>1000</CacheMaxEntries>
    <CacheMaxExpireMinutes>720</CacheMaxExpireMinutes>
    <CacheMinExpireMinutes>720</CacheMinExpireMinutes>
    <CacheMinUserExpireMinutes>720</CacheMinUserExpireMinutes>
    </Query>
    </Cache>
Are there other settings I need to investigate?
Is this just additional commands I need to run when launching the additional presentation service? Here's the command I'm using:
    . ./common.sh
    . ./sa-init.sh
    sawserver -c /home/oracle/OracleBIData/web/config/instanceconfigMobile.xml >> /home/oracle/OracleBIData/web/log/sawserverMobile.out.log 2>&1 &
    Thanks!
    -=Joe

    Hi Joe
I can't say I've tried Robin's technique to run two presentation servers but from my basic understanding of it, both versions will share the same cache as defined in a single nqsconfig.ini file. Maybe these 2 are conflicting somehow?
I see that a separate instanceconfig.xml is used for each presentation server. I know there are a bunch of advanced, largely undocumented, cache properties you can set in there. I can send you a document listing the various properties if you want to play with it - contact me via my website.

  • Setting in BIOS to change RAM speed in an ATC-605?

Is there a way to enable or see the settings in the BIOS to alter RAM speed and timings?  I know a lot of things are locked away compared to a normal built system, but is there a way to do this?  Looking to see if I can enable XMP and up my RAM speed to its appropriate speeds.

Are you talking about the stock memory in your computer?  Or you've added some different memory? I think the max it can do is the JEDEC standard for the motherboard which is DDR3-1600 CL11 (I think).  Even if the BIOS did support XMP. I don't think it would do much good since you can't overclock the CPU.  Neither the locked Haswell CPUs or H81E chipset support overclocking on the TC-605s.  So wouldn't the performance gain would be tiny without the ability to overclock the CPU......? I was actually thinking about buying some 1600/1866 just for curiousity sake, but I get the feeling it would bump down to 1600 due to that JEDEC standard which is out of Acer's control.   I have the i5 4440 which says it only supports 1600 max. http://ark.intel.com/products/75038/Intel-Core-i5-4440-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_30-GHz I don't know though, I'm not an overclocker....so maybe somebody can give you a better answer. Anyway, the TC-605 is more of a mainstream desktop.  Don't get me wrong, you can max it out to 16GB ram and...... At this point, I've added to one of my tc-605s...a SSD with the ram cache enabled, and added some additional ram.  It's pretty quick.  Now I just have to pull the trigger on that gtx 750ti-sc (if it will fit in the case)    Edit:  If you're using CPU-Z or Speccy, and you're using the ram that came with the tc-605, it should give a frequency of around 800 Mhz.  Which would be 1600 since it's DDR=DoubleDataRate.  I think when I checked it said something like 798.1 Mhz...which is close enough to 800 Mhz.

  • CS4,  XP SP3 (32 bit) and over 4 gb ram

I have an XP SP3 system with quad power and 4gb ram at present.
I found this in Memory allocation and usage (Photoshop CS2)
If you have more than 4 GB (to 6 GB (Windows) or 8 GB (Mac OS)), the RAM above 4 GB is used by the operating system as a cache for the Photoshop scratch disk data. Data that previously was written directly to the hard disk by Photoshop, is now cached in this high RAM before being written to the hard disk by the operating system. If you are working with files large enough to take advantage of these extra 2 GB of RAM, the RAM cache can speed performance of Photoshop.
This seems to refer to 64 bit but I was told it applied to 32 bit and 8gb. Is any of this true for 32 bit XP?
    Thanks,

This is talking about a 32 bit app running on a 64 bit operating system.
The gist of it is that a 32 bit app, benefits indirectly from >4GB of
memory, only if the OS is 64 bit. Likewise, on 32 bit systems, there is a
similar benefit to having 4GB of RAM, even though Photoshop cannot see >
    2GB.
Re /3GB: normally the OS splits the 4GB address space 50/50 with
applications. The /3GB switch allows you to shift the balance. Photoshop
can handle a larger image, but, as Jeff says, the performance suffers.
It's useful though. If you have a large image that you must process by
hook or by crook, the /3GB switch allows you to do so without running out
of RAM. I do this occasionally when I get a very large image from a
customer - generally it's go have a cup of coffee, or lunch, while the
large image is being loaded and resized. When I get back, the image is
manageable and I can reboot without the /3GB switch. I've done this on a
system with only 1 GB of ram, processing images between 50 and 100
    megapixels.
FYI - the boot.ini that I use is:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
    Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
    Professional 3GB" /fastdetect /3GB /USERVA=2944 /NoExecute=OptIn
Warning: It's easy to brick your system when modifying boot.ini. Be
absolutely sure that you can boot from another drive and restore your
    original file.
Images are getting larger. 32 bits is a pain. Viva la 64 bits!
