Random disconnections... Without being notified?

I'm experiencing a very frustrating problem. I can never really seem to stay logged on to AIM for very long regardless of the client I'm using. Here's the kicker, though: I'm never notified that I have been logged off, or that I have lost my connection. I can be in the middle of a conversation with somebody to find that they stop responding. I then log off and log back on to be told that I had logged off long before I had noticed that they stopped responding to my IMs. I have reviewed the forums to see people complaining of being logged off with some sort of error alert along the lines of "Connection lost." I'm given no such notification, in fact nothing appears different. Sometimes it deceives me to the point where I am "logged off" while they are typing, so I'll be sitting there being told my buddy is typing for five minutes, amazed at how long an IM this must be, before I finally realize that perhaps I'm not actually online. Another important thing to note is that my connection to the internet is not an issue, I surf the web without any problems while this whole ordeal goes on. I'm using a wireless router; Netgear to be specific. This is so irritating. I've tried switching ports (to 443); it did me no good. Please help!

Hi,
It is most likely caused by micro breaks in the wireless connection.
This tends to be caused by interference by other electrical equipment such as Microwave cookers, power bricks for other devices, electrical cabling in walls, those walk about phones (wireless) that are on the same frequenecy and the like.
Changing the channel in the router can help. As can engaging "Interference Robustness" in the System Preferences > Network > Airport > Airport tab.

  • Increase in monthly charge, without being notified!

Hi. I have an academic individual CC subscription. It automatically renewed last October (2014), however the monthly rate increased from €19.99 p.m. to €30.74 p.m.
I was not informed beforehand of this increase, as per my contract, which states that:
"the price is valid for a full 12 months. After that, we'll renew your contract automatically unless you cancel. The price is subject to change, but we will always notify you beforehand."
This is very dishonest of Adobe, and furthermore breaks the terms of my contract. Has anyone else had this problem?
    Many thanks in advance.
    A.

    What Mylenium said.
There's no dishonesty here but perhaps Adobe's admin could use some improvement e.g. email to notify you of what happens in month 13 when the auto-renew kicks in.
When you signed up originally, it was for the promotional pricing for the first 12 months which auto-renews.
    Terms and Conditions | Adobe
The Terms of the offer say:
"$19.99/month Creative Cloud Introductory Pricing – Save 60%
Eligible  students 13 and older and teachers can purchase an annual membership to Adobe® Creative Cloud™ for a reduced price of $19.99/month for the first year. After the first year we will renew your contract automatically for another year at the then-current standard monthly price (currently at $29.99/month), unless you cancel."
So, in short, you were notified 12 months ago but a reminder 12 months later would have alleviated this confusion for you.

  • How can i sign into icloud on my pc without being notified every time?

I appreciate Apple's efforts to protect my account. However, since iCloud has built into its system the ability to access my account from my PC, I don't think it is necessary to notify me by e-mail each time that I do so. Is there a way of somehow turning notifications off? Or at least request that they leave a cookie on my PC so they know its really me?

  • Shift key randomly gets locked without being pressed (mbp 13" retina, late 2012)

I've been looking everywhere for answers for this problem, with no success (although many people raise similar questions on older models).
My MBP 13" retina 10.8.2 is new, clean, nothing spilled on it.
Ocassionally I connect it to external keyboard and mouse (USB or BT).
Regardless of that, sometimes the SHIFT key gets randomly locked - Without being pressed (whether the native keyboard, or when connected to external).
I could just be browsing the internet or be viewing a document in Word or GDocs, and suddenly - while mouse-scrolling - things will get selected, and the mouse-click becomes SHIFT-Click only.
When it happens, disconnecting/reconnecting the external keyboard or mouse has no effect - the problem persists.
The only workaround I found is to put it to SLEEP when it happens, and immediately wake it up.
The problem started a few weeks ago, and the behavior is completely random (it can happen twice in 10 minutes, or once a week).
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Randomly Disconnecting iPod

My 120GB iPod, when connected to iTunes, will randomly restart. iTunes tells me that it was disconnected without being ejected, and to keep it hooked up to my computer, so I do. When my iPod does come back to life, iTunes says that it can't read anything and all of my music and videos are gone. I have tried using a new USB connector, and the same problem still occurs. This has also happened when my iPod was connected to a different computer! Any way to fix this??

does it disconnect after auto updating? because that is what it is suppose to do

  • Mavericks Time Machine volume disconnects without eject on sleep

Since upgrading, it has now happened three times that I let the MBP go to sleep on its own, and when I come back in the morning find a message that my Time Machine External Drive was disconnected without being properly ejected. In each case, one more backup was performed after I had left.
When waking up the machine, the drive was not being shown at first, but after a minute, it showed up without me doing anything or changing anything about the setup.
    Anyone else? Any thoughts?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Firefox will randomly try to save pages without being prompted too

I'll be browsing the web and left-click on a link then firefox will bring up the "save box" without being prompted too. It happens most often in Facebook, Escapist Magazine and Youtube, but will happen when I use Google.

Most links are to web pages that Firefox handles itself. Some are to other kinds of files and if the server tells Firefox to handle it as a download, it will display the Open/Save or Save/Cancel dialog. If this happens with files that clearly are supposed to display in Firefox, then there could be an issue with your settings for that kind of page or file in: Tools > Options > Applications.
I realize that's a very general answer, so if you can post a couple URLs to pages and indicate which links have the problem, people can take a look and make more specific suggestions.
By the way, the Skype add-on can make changes to pages that cause them to behave differently, so you might try disabling it except when you need it.

  • HT201250 can a time capsule be used as just a backup for data without being connected to a home network?

This is the explanation for my my question about whether a time capsule can be used as a backup without being connected to a network.  I had to disconnect my time capsule when I upgraded my landline to a wireless home phone in order to go to a wireless security system that would work with my 2WIRE router. The time capsule blocked the usage of my camera on my security system, not allowing the camera to connect to the 2WIRE router. Once I disconnected the time capsule,  the camera was able to connect wirelessly to the 2WIRE.

As you can read, you can do what you want. You just have to set up the Time Capsule network in AirPort Utility without connecting it to the router and ignoring the messages, and connect to the Time Capsule network. You will have to switch between the Time Capsule and the other router's networks

  • Network drives randomly disconnecting, unable to reconnect

I have been having an issue with network drives randomly disconnecting. When I try and reconnect using the Connect to Server dialog, the share is greyed out. My current workaround has been to open up terminal and run umount /Volume/Share_Name, and I am able to connect again afterwards. This is happening multiple times a day, and across multiple servers. I have poked around the forums and seen some people with similar issues, but the solution of connecting with cifs:// instead of smb:// has not made any difference.

which ultimately means apple didn't do enough testing before releasing the last patch
This is not always, and may not be, the case. What many don't realise is that many 3rd party developers stray from the 802.11 series specifications in an attampt to boost speed and get one up on their competitors. For instance D-Link, amongst others, use a short preamble setting by default in some of their routers to improve performance. However, this is non-standard and when it comes across wireless network adapters that don't support this then you have problems. They assume that their network adapters are being used for "maximum speed and compatibility". Whether Apple should or should not support a short preamble is another subject altogether.
However, I do agree with you in that Apple should put more work into their Airport software.

  • I have two problems with my 2012 13" MacBook Pro. 1. Gray screen shows at startup  2. Randomly disconnects from network. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have two problems with my 2012 13” MacBook Pro.
    Gray screen shows at startup
    Randomly disconnects from network.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

First, open Terminal in your Utilities folder and paste this into the prompt line:
    sudo update_dyld_shared_cache
Press RETURN. You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed to the screen. Press RETURN again.
Next, boot the computer into Safe Mode.
    Next, do the following:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Random disconnections

Since the beginning of December I have been getting what seem to be random disconnections with my broadband. Pages won't load for 30 seconds or so then it all goes back to normal.
Some times it will happen only a couple of times a day and other times (like tonight) it is every ten minutes. I have a HH3 and modem and all the lights stay on as they should be, just pages wont load, at the bottom of my browser sometimes I get the message "cannot resolve host"
I got on to @btcare via twitter and they have been brilliant, sent me a new HH3 and arranged for an engineer visit who found a line fault, fixed it but half an hour after he went, the disconnections started again.
It affects my PC (wired) 2 laptops and mobile phones (wireless) and also my Youview box (the internet channels will freeze, then come back about 20 seconds later)
I have fitted a new cable from the modem to the phone socket to no avail.
@btcare are phoning me back Saturday to see if the disconnections have stopped.
Most of the time it is just a small irritation and can be lived with, but times like tonight it is a royal pain in the bum!
does anyone here have any ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

Ive been getting random disconnections since infinity was installed. Wife complains, kids complain. Ofcourse since it doesn't usually last long by the time I phone customer services (who are useless) they think there is no problem. Cant wait until my contract is up and I can get back to a proper broadband supplier. No signal even when all three lights are blue on the router.
I would strongly advise anyone contemplating getting bt infinity to reconsider. Worst broadband I have ever had. Great when it works just doesn't work for long enough periods without dropouts. At least 10-20 a day.
What if anything have you tried to remedy this? Are you connecting by wireless or by Ethernet.  Do you want suggestions of what to try or are you just wanting to pass on your experience?

  • Mac Pro randomly disconnecting USB devices

    Hello All,
Am hoping someone out there will be able to advise me. I have a 1TB external SATA drive connected directly to one of my Mac Pro USB ports, (that is, not via a USB hub). The Mac Pro has a habit of randomly disconnecting the drive during file transfers. It seems to particularly do it when the screen saver initiates itself. I've disabled the screen saver but unfortunately that hasn't resolved the problem. The problem itself doesn't seem to be isolated to the external USB hard drive either. The Mac has on occasions disconnected other USB devices too.
Any suggestions or ideas on what the cause of it is and how I resolve it?
    Many thanks
    GPJ007

Yes Grant, I've exchanged the power suppply, cables, the HUB and also the HDD and checked them on my MBP - they work fine. The only USB slot that's working fine is the one on the PCI-E Card. All internal Ports do eject the USB HDD's and also have problem with Printercommunication. I can mount the USB HDD without Problem, until I want to access a larger File or transfer data from or to it, then it ejects itself - well after freezing the Computer for 5min first, until the unmount message appear.
By the way: Sorry, was a bit frustrated. I'm working as an Freelance Editor and really need to have a working USB. But the only thing I found were a huge amount of questions to the same problem, but no solution. And from apple side the only advice was to not use third party device or use only powered HDD's and HUB's. That's not really helpful...
GPJ007:  Ok, I hoped to not have to make a new Setup of the OS and all the program. Well in a few weeks there is a gap in the order chain, I'm going to reinstall the OS then and let you know about sucess or not.
    Thanks in advance

  • Bonjour Gateway - Airplay / AirServer - Random Disconnects

I am experiencing random disconnects during an Airplay session to AirServer. Airserver disappears from the screen and Airplay session is gone. Here is the details of my setup:
    WLC 5508 7.5.102.0
    1142n APs
AirServer (1.9.4) installed on wired PCs.
Wireless clients (iOS Devices 7.x and 6.x) use Airplay to mirror to the PCs running AirServer.
APs are in mDNS mode and snooping the vlan the PCs reside in.
Wireless clients in separate BYOD WLAN.
Enabled bonjour gateway and mDNS AP (trunk mode)
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/technology/bonjour/7.5/Bonjour_Gateway_Phase-2_WLC_software_release_7.5.html#wp44311
    Enabled videostream
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10315/products_tech_note09186a0080b6e11e.shtml
Verified via packet capture the client traffic is being marked for QoS (and Gold enabled on BYOD WLAN)
Differentiated Services Field: 0x80 (DSCP 0x20: Class Selector 4; ECN: 0x00:  Not-ECT (Not ECN-Capable Transport))
This is an intermittent issue. I can play a YouTube video for 60 mins with no issues sometimes. Sometimes the disconnect happens. WLC mdns error debug output does not look significantly different when the crash happens.
    Any thoughts? Similar experience?

Alright, long story short: Got a wirless repeater, set the printer up to connect wireless, now everything works fine, including AirPrint.
Btw.: Even though it says it is not possible, it is actually possible to access the printer via WLAN and LAN (wired) simultaneosly.
Thanks anyway. I think this can be marked as solved
