Random mail arrival failure. SMTP log reports arrival, user never gets it

Our 10.5.4 Mail server has become progressively less and less reliable over a period of months. I can reproduce repeatable (but inconsistent) instances of mails sent to us and failing to arrive. The weirdness even extends to emails sent from outside to multiple recipients on our server *in the same email*, and where some of the recipients get it and the others don't (while the non-recipients are randomly receiving other mails OK). Or, an external sender sending an email while I'm on the phone with him, it failing to arrive (and never does), and then a resend half an hour later arrives immediately.
Needless to say, confidence in our mail server is plummeting.
The OS-X Server mail log *actually records a mail arrival event* even when the user never gets the email, thus:

...and the upstream mail filter (sonar in this case, our virus and spam filter) corroborates that an email arrived as well. But, as I said, the user (me) +never got this email+. Numerous other users report the same experience. Some mails arriving at our mail server simply never get put into inboxes and disappear. Poof.
The only lead I have is multiple instances of the following message in the console at (roughly) the same time as the mail arrival failure:
*6/08/08 1:15:00 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (0x11a220.cron[14553]) Could not setup Mach task special port 9: (os/kern) no access.*
I have taken to rebooting the server twice daily to reduce the frequency of these occurrences. The machine is a G5 XServe hosting 700 accounts in a School.

In the log example quoted above, ignore all the http:// references. Apple's discussions software is assuming the square brackets in the log mean "insert URL"

    hi,
really having trouble with my .Mac email account.
I have set up my outgoing server in Mail to smtp.mac.com, have my username and password correct, and when I send emails they leave my out box and go to my sent email box. Swoosh sound and all.
HOWEVER. No emails ever reach their destination. I've tested a few different email acocunts......
anyone have any suggesstions?? much thanks
    Luke

In the meantime, you can always check your e-mail with another service like http://www.3wmail.com/ or http://www.mail2web.com/
They have their own sendmail servers that are independent of dotMac.

  • Smtp log entry, bounces, or does the mail server send bounce backscatter?

Today, I received two bounces from mail I did not send, and they reference a subdomain of a virtual domain on my machine that doesn't exist...
server is set up with domain:  server.domain.com
web and mail services are available for virtual domain:  service.com
So, I got what I at first thought were phishing bounces, but then when I looked in my mail logs today, I found my first ever SMTP log entries:
Feb 16 07:33:42 server.domain.com postfix/smtpd[----]: warning: hostname #.#.#.#.reverse.someone.net does not resolve to address #.#.#.#: nodename nor servname provided, or not known
I have four of those at various times this morning.
I've checked the mail logs and seen that there are connection attempts, particularly people trying plain text.  I have used mxtoolbox and a few other relay checkers to be sure there is not an open smtp relay.  none.
I have one site on the service.com and it has its own malware checking (wordpress install).  It reports that it is clean and feeling good.
The default sites are unaccessible without http authentication.
Do those SMTP log entires mean someone has gained access?  or was my server trying to process backscatter spam?  I'm lost on how this could happen.

What do the bounce messages say? Was the mail rejected by a remote server? If so, which one? What are some of the other log entries in the mail log? Does MX Toolbox say your email server is or is not an open relay? Are the IP addresses in your log post an internal or external address? Someone might be using your domain to send spam email but they may not be using your email server and when the messages bounce they get returned to your server.

I am getting the following error in the SMTP log of the mail service, Anybody might have any suggestions:
postfix/master[87670]: fatal: open lock file /var/lib/postfix/master.lock: cannot open file: Permission denied.
The permissions of the master.lock file are as follows:
    -rw-------  1 _postfix  mail  33 Jul  7 10:25 master.lock
The Mail service stops after a few minutes from starting it
    I appreciate your feedback

I found the problem.. the executable job was referring to a none existing batch file..
I have refreshed the database from production some time ago and the jobs I have setup are referring to production scripts and paths (which we didnt have on dev)..
    This is now resolved.

  • /usr/bin/mail buggy or smtp server picky?

I want to use mail to send email quickly from my terminal and decided to use msmtp as my smtp client to keep things light and straightforward.
However, when I use /usr/bin/mail to send an email to [email protected], my smtp server (mail.messagingengine.com if you are interested) queues the email that was delivered by my /usr/bin/msmtp client fine (I get an OK for queue message), but after a couple of hours I get an NDR (Non Delivery Report) saying that my message couldn't be sent and will be retried until ultimately I get an NDR that my message couldn't be delivered.
After some debugging, I realized that the reason the smtp server was having trouble is that my message didn't contain the From: header. Since the from address is already specified in the envelope upon SMTP-initiation, it seemed to me illogical that the smtp server couldn't just use that email.
So I opened a ticket with those guys over at fastmail.fm, and they told me that the problem was not with the SMTP server, but with the mail client, which creates "invalid" messages (i.e. not sending the From: header). Since I trust my provider to know his stuff, here's my question:
How can I tell /usr/bin/mail to insert a specific From: header?
    Thanks!

    Hello fukawi2,
    my ~/.mailrc contains one line:
    set sendmail=/usr/bin/msmtp
Here's what happens when write an email using /usr/bin/mail from the mailx 8.1.1-7 package:
    [x@eee ~]$ mail [email protected]
    Subject: hello
    Another test
    EOT
Here's how /usr/bin/mail passes my email to msmtp:
    /usr/bin/msmtp -i [email protected]
    To: [email protected]
    Subject: hello
    Another test
Here's what my msmtp config looks like:
    #~/.msmtp
    account fastmail
    from "[email protected]"
    host mail.messagingengine.com
    auth on
    tls on
    tls_certcheck off
    user [email protected]
    password "*"
    logfile ~/msmtp.log
Here's what the msmtp log shows when I send the email:
    nov 18 00:28:41 host=mail.messagingengine.com tls=on auth=on user=[email protected] from=[email protected] recipients=[email protected] mailsize=41 smtpstatus=250 smtpmsg='250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as C3A00A7B7' exitcode=EX_OK
I will send the NDR from the SMTP server when it arrives (takes a couple of hours) if you'd like to inspect it.
Maybe ssmtp has a way to insert a From: header automatically, I haven't taken a look at it. Maybe even msmtp has a way to do that, even though I haven't found that option in the man pages.
What I am trying to say is, if the /usr/bin/mail program cannot be configured to create a valid rfc-compliant email, then using an intermediary mail transport agent like ssmtp would only be a workaround but not a permanent fix. Hence my suggestion to replace mailx with a compliant, working package in the arch core install.
Any ideas on how to proceed from here?

I have starred out some details for anonymity. I have other servers with a matching configuration file as above (although on a 2008 version of SSRS) that never have this problem.
The issue is intermittent and doesn't affect one specific report and on some occasions the retries work however quite often they don't work at all. I have had the network guys here monitor the port to see if the mail is even leaving the server and apparently
the failed attempts do not register any data in wire shark. I don't believe this to be a size issue with the reports as they aren't supposed to deviate much.
Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi behavedave,
According to your description, you have data-driven subscription failure randomly. Right?
In this scenario, there's nothing wrong on your subscription configuration. Since the issue happens randomly, we can hardly to figure out reason directly. Here are two articles about subscription monitoring and troubleshooting. Please refer to links below:

Sankar, your outbound send connector has an address space of *. So when you run "Get-SendConnector", you will see something like the following:
    Identity                                AddressSpaces
    Enabled
    Unix System Connection                  {SMTP:*.domfreebusy.contractor.hunti... True
    Outgoing SMTP Connector
    {SMTP:*;10}                             True
    Mailbox Journaling Connector            {SMTP:pdwastap01.huntington.com;1}      True
The middle one with the {SMTP:*;10} in my case (you may have a different number than 10 in yours) is my outbound connector. So yours will show an address space of {SMTP:*;<some number, 10 is the default>}. HTH ...

  • FF 5.2 Send Log Report Execution Notification "YES"

I received the Firefighter Log Report.txt attachment via email successfully (only once) but am no longer receiving them.  The /VIRSA/ZVFATBAK and /VIRSA/ZVFAT_LOG_REPORT jobs are running and I can even run them manually.  Everything else is functioning properly (i.e.; reports, logs and the FF login notification email) except for this one item.  What can I look for that might resolve this issue?

SOLUTION:  SAP NOTE 1065048 - Superuser Log Not sent in Email to Controller
    1. Execute transaction SOST.
      a) Select Period, Send Status, Transmitted, Errors, Sender and execute to check emails generated for the firefighter log report.
      b) If no emails are generated with "VFAT Log Report" in the subject, then proceed to step 2 and check the settings. If emails are generated but not sent from your system, then proceed to step 3 and check the SAPCONNECT settings for the external email "Send Process".
    2. Execute transaction /n/VIRSA/VFAT.
      a) Click on the "Configuration" button and verify that configuration parameter "MAIL (Send FirefightID login notification) is set to "YES".
      b) Click on the "Controllers" button and verify that FF ID Controller has "EMAIL" as the usage flag.
      c) Execute transaction SU01 and verify that FF ID Controller has a valid "Email Address" and "Comm.Method INT".
      d) Repeat step c for the user under whose authorization background job for program /VIRSA/ZVFATBAK is scheduled. This can be checked by executing transaction SM37, selecting the job, clicking on button "Step" and noting down the ID under "User" column on the next screen. Also verify that
Superuser Administrator role is assigned to this "User".
    3. Execute transaction SCOT.
      a) Make sure external email communication method is configured for address type INT and "Send Jobs" are scheduled and active.
      b) Check output format for SAP documents for address type internet is set, for example "TXT" for "RAW Text", "PDF" for SAPScript/SmartForms, etc.
      c) Do a routing test with Firefighter background job user as "SENDER", Recipient Address Type as "INT" and controller's email ID from SU01 as recipient.
      d) Refer to SAP Notes 183465, 171698 and 377602 for further information on setting conversion rules at the INT / SMTP node.
NOTE: Please work with an ABAP developer / BASIS to identify the cause of the issue and apply any necessary kernel / ABAP patches if required to resolve the issue.

  • Random mail delivery delays - stuck in queue for extended periods of time

I'm really hoping someone can help me out here. I'm setting up a new OS X Mail server (upgrading from Tenon Post.Office). I'm using accounts from Active Directory and everything seems to be working great... except (you knew there was an 'except' didn't ya?) that I'm randomly getting long delays in email delivery.
From what troubleshooting I've done so far, basically the emails are coming to our domain, hitting our Symantec anti-virus / anti-spam server and then getting forwarded to my mail server fine. I can look in the SMTP logs and see the emails showing up...
But then, completely randomly, there is sometimes a long 1-6 hour delay before it transfers from the SMTP to actually being able to get the email in our clients. I can see these emails sitting in the queue, but clicking the 'Retry' and entering some of the commands I've seen on this board don't seem able to kick the queue into gear.
We're just in testing right now, so only have about 6 users on this machine, but there is going to be about 1000 when I'm all said and done, so the fact that I'm getting these delays already concerns me. Network and CPU activity are barely even showing (this is a quad Xeon server, so lots of power), so I don't think things are being overloaded, which makes me suspect some kind of configuration error.
Looking at other requests, I'm assuming I'm going to be asked for postconf -n and the output of some of the logs, so let me add that now:

A wealth of information on configuring/troubleshooting your email server can be found at:
    http://osx.topicdesk.com/
I know your issues isn't particularly with SPAM, however I would try to following this tutorial on "Frontline SPAM Defense":

This fixed many of my email server issues. I would try this first.

  • No SMTP log after upgrade to Server 4.0.3

I just updated my server to 4.0.3 and I initially had an error message saying that a script was not owned by postfix repeated in the SMTP log file.
First I tried to fix it with disk utility but it didn't work.
So in Terminal I did: sudo chown _postfix /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mta/./guid_device_maps.plist
Now I have no SMTP log showing in the server menu any ideas on how to get it back is very welcome.
    Kind regards
    Peter

Okay I reinstalled the Server from App Store and we're back to square one with the message:
postfix/postfix-script[2941]: warning: not owned by _postfix: /Library/Server/Mail/Data/mta/./guid_device_maps.plist
However, http://topicdesk.com/faqs/os-x-server-mail-services-faq/166-what-is-virtual-mail -hosting-or-are-virtual-mail-domains say the message doesn't matter.
So I apologise for the false alarm.
    Kind regards

  • Apple Mail Assertion Failure

    Hi,
My company uses Office 365 for hosted Exchange email. We have 1 user who uses Apple Mail on OSX 10.7 to connect to the server in Exchange mode (using EWS). This was working great until a few days ago where he has sporadic connection problems. Reproducable situation below:
    1) Select 100 emails in any given folder
    2) Drag/drop those emails into another folder to move them there
    3) They will start moving but it will fail at somepoint and give the message "Cannot execute move operation".
    4) After that message appears it is usually several minutes before he can try again or send any emails.
    5) Trying to send an email immediately after the error message results in the "Cannot send message using the server" dialog where you are prompted to select a different server to send the message. Choosing an SMTP server results in the message being sent but sometimes (and only sometimes) the message is resent a couple of hours later through the exchange system.
We are getting a million of the following assertion failure messages in the console:

We have tried deleting the account and making a new one. As well as removing the mailbox folder (~/Library/Mail/V2/EWS-*) and the Apple Mail plist file. We have also setup the email on a different Mac (also OSX 10.7) but we still get the same assertion failure message.
This user's email account works fine in Outlook on Windows and Mac (Outlook 2010 and 2011) and it also works fine through the online web portal. Outlook 2011 Mac uses EWS (the same protocol Apple Mail uses) and it's not throwing any errors and everything works properly so that is leading me to believe it's an issue with Apple Mail.
Perhaps related, perhaps not, but the user's iPhone and iPad have also stopped working properly with the account. They will sometimes connect but a lot of the time they give an error message about not being able to connect to the server. This leads us to believe it's an exchange server problem, but then why does it work in Outlook and the online portal without any problems? It's only the Apple products that are falling apart.

I ended up having to reproduce the problem in Outlook 2011 Mac before O365 support would help me. Apparently Apple Mail isn't one of the officially supported clients so they weren't going to figure it out for me. Once they ran out of ideas they just gave me the "Apple Mail is officially supported" excuse and stopped helping me.
Although we weren't initially having the problem in Outlook 2011 Mac it did start giving tons of errors during certain operations (with a -19907 error code) after a while. Not sure why it started doing that ... but it did. This was only happening with one of our user's accounts so it had to be something server-side that was the problem. I eventually got a support ticket in their system (despite being a P1 plan holder) so that they could call me. We did some Wireshark capturing to try to diagnose the problem but by that time the problem had fixed itself.

Since I can not log in bug report page, not even getting an error message, I'll write all my issues with ios8 here... I have an iphone 4S and I did the last update. Now I am in trouble.
    1. When I move the "sound on/off" button, I get it buzzing 10 times before the setting is changed and I can do anything else, just not reacting to the round button on screen touches.
    2. Impossible to copy text from most websites into notes.
    3. Impossible to delete an email account in settings.
    4. Uses up the battery twice as fast as before. I have "update apps" setting turned off, just reading a couple of mails, making a couple of photos and open maps apps twice a day, and the battery is dead well before the evening.
    5. Got extremely slow, and it was getting slower and slower with every system update.
I'm sure I forgot something... But well, that already a lot.

Well, actually number 3 in my list is not true any more, I just tried to delete my account 15 times, then I've written my post, then half an hour later my Settings finally updated my accounts list. Whohoo
I did not try restoring it yet, thank you for the link!
