Random stalls caused by khugepaged?

I have a fairly beefy Arch Linux computer, kernel 3.7.7-1-ARCH. However, recently it's been having random freeze ups. Never common, but it'd freeze for a good 15 seconds where no program is responsive. Sometimes the mouse freezes with it and the cursor doesn't move. After this happens, it'll usually happen 2 or 3 more times until I decide to just restart my computer.
It just happened again a few minutes ago and this time I traced it using top. Whenever my computer would freeze, khugepaged CPU usage would randomly rise to 100%.
I run VMWare with 7 gigs of RAM assigned to it, however, my computer has 16G of RAM. When this last freeze up happened, I had 6G of RAM free. To give an idea, heres the header of top
KiB Mem: 16394208 total, 10194584 used, 6199624 free, 4 buffers
KiB Swap: 8388604 total, 103916 used, 8284688 free, 8788952 cached
I've seen some ways to disable khugepaged, but what bad effects could this cause? How can I just get it to behave better?

  • Safari 6.0.5 randomly stalls on loading pages which eventually load after hitting refresh several times. Also youtube videos will not play (blank window).

For the last few days, I've been experiencing problems with Safari 6.0.5 stalling while apparently trying to load a web page. It seems to occur randomly either when manually entering a URL address or clicking a link on a loaded web page or web search results. Using the URL bar to enter a search term is also subject to the same random stalling.
The problem is usually resolved by repeated reloads of the page (or re entering the search term or manual URL address). However the frequency with which I have to do this has become really quite annoying.
Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and knows the cause/solution?
    Thanks
    Toby

<edit: youtube issue resolved by uninstalling all my extensions. still testing safari to see if it continues to stall randomly>

  • IBook Randomly Stalls/Cycles Down

The problem started roughly a week and a half ago, where my iBook will randomly cycle down (making the same noise as when it shuts down) and ultimately stall, forcing me to manually shut down via the power-button and reboot in similar fashion.
However, more recently the frequency of occurrences has increased, to include occurring most often in the middle of start-up. There are now instances where it takes up to 30 minutes of manual-shutdown and reboot in order to get the unit just to cycle completely through startup.
I've had this laptop since 2005 and did not purchase Apple Care, much to my dismay since this individual unit has managed to torch 3 hard drives and 4 logic boards since purchase. And for the past 6 months, the battery has decided to no longer hold any charge and thus the unit will only run if connect through the adaptor, and immediately shuts down if unplugged.
First question is whether there is any explanation as to what is causing these random stalls/shutdowns? Is it relevant to not having the battery available as a power source? I suspect the lithium battery has simply outlived its viability.
However, before I spend the $$$ to replace the battery, as it is only available online now, I want to figure out if this is just a time to scrap working with this unit and purchase a new one.
Though I have to tell you that after the massive amount of data I have lost due to the numerous hardware failures I experienced in the first two years of ownership with this current unit, I'm extremely reluctant to purchase another Apple brand laptop, as tech support essentially shined me on due to the fact that I didn't purchase Apple Care, and only chose to plug in new parts, so it seemed without investigating the cause of the problem.
Thanks in advance, everyone. Here's hoping the unit allows me on to even be able to read responses.

How old is your battery? Even modern batteries have a finite number of charge cycles, then the chemicals become exhausted and they won't be able to hold much power, until they eventually die. In constant use, my experience has been that you'd be lucky to get 2, at most 3 years out of a NiMH or even lithium battery.
Do you have the same problems if the charging plug is in?

  • Random stalling

    Evening, mornin' all,
this is the first post from a somewhat frustrated switcher.
Didn´t know in what forum to post. Since the problem arises in most applications I figures this is the right place.
My 2 month old mac mini´s OS is acting weird.
I first noticed it when Itunes stuttered. And I mean heavy stuttering. Every 4 seconds a 1 second stall, in every song. On PC speakers as well as through airport. CD´s are self imported. BTW, radio stream does not stutter!
After that, I noticed that i.e. when clicking on the apple menu, it took a second or two before it to come active (beach ball playing up)
Hovering over the menu (showing pull down menus) showed stalling as well. For about 2 seconds. The pulldown menu of one item will stay down, while I can point the pointer anywhere I want. This phenomenon takes about 10 seconds of hovering before to pup up.
"Closing" an app (red button) takes a second or two. On a lot of occasions
Safari gives me on various occasions faster typing than my shadow. First typing then letters appear. Three windows open and switching between them often takes 3 seconds after clicking the said tab.
Other apps show about the same lag.
I did an exstensive hardware check (holding D on startup) leading to no appearant problem
SMART test shows about 65 reallocated bad sectors, leading to a "Fail" status
Used the disk utility program as well.
Monitor log only shows the hangups in safari. Not in other apps, although it happens there as well.
Wanting to use the mini as a media center, this hickup renders it useless to me.
By bying a mac, I wanted to get rid of the windoze hassles with various disk preformance control programs around, registry cleaners and what have you not.
FWIW, Besides office for mac (sorry folks, it´s for the wife) I have no other programs installed. No movies either (I have the thing barely for 2 months)
    Anyone having the same experience?
    appologies for the lengthy post!
    cheers

Well I'm back and so is the problem. It seems that the new harddrive did not solve anything at all.
I've just typed the previous sentence with nothing being displayed for 4 seconds. Beach balls come up all the time. The mac hangs at frequent random intervals. Filling in spotlight search window, clicking sent items in mail,... a lot of clicks result in a 4 second wait before the mac starts action. I'm getting very frustrated with my new mac. I do not notice any extreme cpu use during these frequent stalls. I have no clue what is causing them. It also happens when Safari is not running. Maybe I should claim a new mac mini in the store. I've used time machine to reinstall the data on my HD. But besides my CDs and MSoffice for the wife, there's no progs or data installed.
    cheers,

    Hi,
In order to assist you, we will need the .DMP files to analyze what exactly occurred at the time of the crash, etc.
If you don't know where .DMP files are located, here's how to get to them:
    1. Navigate to the %systemroot%\Minidump folder.
    2. Copy any and all DMP files in the Minidump folder to your Desktop and then zip up these files.
    3. Upload the zip containing the .DMP files to Onedrive or a hosting site of your choice and paste in your reply. Preferred sites: Onedrive, Mediafire, Dropbox, etc. Nothing with wait-timers, download managers, etc.
4 (optional): The type of .DMP files located in the Minidump folder are known as Small Memory Dumps. In %systemroot% there will be what is known as a Kernel-Dump (if your system is set to generate). It is labeled MEMORY.DMP. The difference
between Small Memory Dumps and Kernel-Dumps in the simplest definition is a Kernel-Dump contains
much more information at the time of the crash, therefore allowing further debugging of your issue. If your upload speed permits it, and you aren't going against any strict bandwidth and/or usage caps, etc, the Kernel-Dump is the best
choice. Do note that Kernel-Dumps are much larger in size due to containing much more info, which is why I mentioned upload speed, etc.
If you are going to use Onedrive but don't know how to upload to it, please visit the following:
Upload photos and files to Onedrive.
After doing that, to learn how to share the link to the file if you are unaware, please visit the following link -
Share files and folders and change permissions and view 'Get a link'.
Please note that any "cleaner" programs such as TuneUpUtilities, CCleaner, etc, by default will delete .DMP files upon use. With this said, if you've run such software, you will need to allow the system to crash once again to generate a crash dump.
If your computer is not generating .DMP files, please do the following:
    1. Start > type %systemroot% which should show the Windows folder, click on it. Once inside that folder, ensure there is a Minidump folder created. If not, CTRL-SHIFT-N to make a New Folder and name it Minidump.
    2. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Performance > Settings > Advanced > Ensure there's a check-mark for 'Automatically manage paging file size for all
    drives'.
    3. Windows key + Pause key. This should bring up System. Click Advanced System Settings on the left > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > ensure there is a check mark next to 'Write an event to the system
    log'.
Ensure Small Memory Dump is selected and ensure the path is %systemroot%\Minidump.
    4. Double check that the WERS is ENABLED:
Start > Search > type services.msc > Under the name tab, find Windows Error Reporting Service > If the status of the service is not Started then right click it and select Start. Also ensure that under Startup Type it is set to Automatic rather than
Manual. You can do this by right clicking it, selecting properties, and under General selecting startup type to 'Automatic', and then click Apply.
If you cannot get into normal mode to do any of this, please do this via Safe Mode.
    Regards,
    Patrick

  • MacPro Randomly Stalls

My MacPro stalls randomly in the middle of tasks. I have to "force quit" and then just close the force quit window and not actually force quitting an application. I have run Disk Utility countless times to repair the disks finding nothing and yet the problem continues. Can someone please shed some light on my problem? I am currently running OS 10.5.4.

Run Disk Warrior instead, don't trust Apple First Aid, it doesn't do a thorough job.

  • Ath9k slow an unreliable; carl9170 randomly stalls

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) for months to get reliable wireless on a desktop. I have tried three different cards, each with different chipsets.
The one I would like to get working most is the D-Link DWA-556, which is based on the ath9k chipset AR5416+AR2133. (http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=549) I specifically bought this card after looking online for what seemed to be the most compatible wireless N card for Linux after having problems with my previous cards. Everything seemed to point to the drivers being of decent quality and having it work without too much effort. Boy, was that wrong.
Most of the time it will fail to grab the address from DHCP. Sometimes it will connect successfully, but it is incredibly slow. Running online broadband speed tests will typically show speeds of around 0.5 Mbps, and local file transfers are around 500 KBps.
Looking online, I saw this kernel bug (https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31452), but the fix was committed in 2.6.38.5 and I am currently on 2.6.38.6. There were other posts online recommending disabling hardware encryption with the ath9k module option "nohwcrypt=1", but that didn't seem to fix it. In fact, after disabling hardware encryption it seemed to make it more likely for DHCP to time out, and that persisted even after re-enabling hardware encryption and even rebooting. I also tried to install compat-wireless-patched and compat-wireless-patched-daily from AUR to no effect. (normal compat-wireless fails to compile...)
Here are the messages in everything.log when it fails to connect:

My fallback is what I was using before, which is a USB wireless N dongle based on the ar9170 chipset. (http://www.iogear.com/product/GWU623/) It mostly works alright, if a little slow for my tastes for local file transfers, (around 2.5 MBps) but the big problem is the network will sometimes stall for a couple minutes. There don't appear to be any messages in the logs when this happens, and iwconfig and ifconfig still say that it's connected, but any attempts to access the network fail until it comes back in a couple minutes.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. To say this has been frustrating is a great understatement.

A little more information: Here's the output for iwconfig
    wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"d20"
    Mode:Managed Frequency:2.417 GHz Access Point: 00:18:E7:EF:EA:9E
    Bit Rate=104 Mb/s Tx-Power=19 dBm

    Link Quality=40/70 Signal level=-70 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
    Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:64 Missed beacon:0
Despite this decent looking output for bit rate and signal, scp is currently transferring at around 60 KB/s. However, the "Invalid misc" part seems to be increasing at a fast rate when transferring data. (after around a minute of letting scp run, it had an additional 100 "Invalid misc") This seems to be similar to the kernel bug that I linked to, but it happens regardless of hardware encryption and the version of the kernel I am running already has the fix, though it's possible it's a separate bug related bug.

  • Random crash caused by URLLoader

I'm trying to debug this extremely weird crash that we keep having which is being caused by URLLoader. For some reason it will spit out an error message "Error #2044: Unhandled ioError:. text=Error #2032: Stream Error..." but when I add an IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR it goes away and the event handler never gets called. Any idea what the hell is going on? Because this is really damn weird and confusing as hell. Is this event handler required or something? Because that's what it seems like.

  • IMac7.1 (10.7.5) Random Sleep Cause:-100

I have an iMac 7.1 (2007) The OS is (10.7.5). It has taken to going to sleep periodically. When I click the mouse, it will wake back up. Of course whatever was processing is halted and the wireless connection is dropped.
Whenever this happens, if I check the console logs, I get a log statement such as:
                       kernel: Previous Sleep Cause: -100
This is not the power management settings, the computer is set to never sleep and to not dim the display for hours. The sleep will happen when using the system. I had thought it was related to graphics as it had happened more with the videos. It has since proven to happen even if just listening to music on iTunes. (I think I have noticed it happens more frequently when synching an iPhone/iPod but not all of the time.)
I haven taken into the geniuses twice and left it overnight. The issue could not be replicated at the store. The system diagnostic scan shows the components as healthy. I was encouraged to look for something environmental. There was some thought that it may be a power supply but this was just a guess and the power supply does not fail diagnostics.
    Virus scanning turns up nothing.
I have taken all accessorries off the system other than the USB keyboard and mouse and a single USB cable for iPhone/iPod. This includes disabling and unplugging the time machine.
I have put a UPS between the system and the wall with no other components on the UPS to rule out poor power input or low quality power. This shows the output remains between 121 and 125 V and 0.105 Kw at 60 Hz.
Using istat pro from bjango, i see no particular pattern on the system operating conditions when the failure occurs.
After the above, the problem has become less frequent but still occurs.

    Any suggestions?

  • Program Stalls Briefly causing test rig damage

I am using LabView and a C-DAQ 9178 to control a hydraulic test rig.  The C-DAq utilizes a USB connection to the host computer running Windows 7. The program is a closed loop setup utilizing a PID subroutine to control each of the hydraulic valves and pump.  The control can be based on either cylinder position or load.  I am using a 9219 module to read the load cells, position indicators, and valve spool position.  A 9264 module takes care of the voltage outputs to the valves, relays, etc.The program will run great for extended periods of time (the machine is a fatigue tester, so it accumulates load cycles on a test sample over time).  But every once in a while, it will miss. And by miss, I mean it stalls.  The program is writing certain paramaters to a text file for review later.  What we see is a major delay in the time component of the data file.
It will look something like this.
    Time:
    604.150
    604.200
    604.250
    604.300
    604.524
    604.554
    604.575
The problem with this delay is that if the test subject is fairly stiff, the program stalls, causing the valve to stop and stay in whatever position was it's last signal (normally open).  This causes the cylinder to keep moving and normally results in unwanted damage of the test subject.  The program has checks built into that will shutdown the pump, center the valves, release the load, and unload the system pressure if the cylinder moves out of a given position or force range.  However, because the program stalls, these checks do not work until the program resumes and it is too late, the damage is done.
What can I do to eliminate this stalling problem?  Any help is greatly appreciated.

First, you need to determine if this is a Windows problem, or if your LV code is responsible.
If your data files are large, and you are building the text file using inefficient LV methods, you may be making an unexpected call to the memory manager. This is just one possibility -- there may be others. (Restructuring the code, with the file save in an independent loop, may aleviate the issue to some extent.)
If you have eliminated the possibility of a LV-based problem, then Windows could very possibly be the culprit (as suggested by others in this thread). Windows optimization *might* get you there, but there is always some uncertainty if Windows is in the equation. In testing, it might appear to be fine, but then Windows decides to scan the DVD drive, and you experience the failure again.
Side Note: Back in the LV 2007/2008 days, I had a similar intermittent Windows problem. It appeared to be related to the DVD drive. The solution was simply to put a DVD disk into the DVD drive. This prevented Windows from scanning the drive at unexpected times, solving the problem.
If Windows system timing turns out to be the culprit, migrating to LV RT might be the easiest path forward. cRIO is a popular choice, but I personally prefer PXI or a desktop PC configured to run RT.
If your application doesn't require the user to engage other Windows applications (Excel, Word, etc), and additional hardware costs are the primary concern, one option is to configure your existing PC to run RT. This can be a cost-effective solution if there is some reluctance to purchasing additional cRIO or PXI hardware.
Here is a link to the requirements for running LV RT on a desktop PC:
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/8239/en/
We have successfully used LV RT on customized PC hardware when the application requirements exceeded the top-of-the line PXI controller, or when the cost for a capable PXI system has been prohibitive. In both of these situations, a custom LV RT PC makes good sense.
Anyway, good luck with your issue.

  • Time Machine Erratic/Stalls

Add me to the list of people experiencing major troubles with Time Machine. I've been trying to use it for over two month, and have been going crazy trying to troubleshoot the difficulties. The trouble is that TM randomly stalls during the backup process. It just stops backing up; it doesn't freeze anything, or cause any other noticeable problem, and it doesn't produce any error messages in the Console application. Occasionally, it will, after very long periods, pick up and produce a completed backup once or twice a day. Now, however, it is trying to do its initial backup (after a re-formatting of the external drive), and will not complete it (it stalls at about 120 GB of 197 GB).
I had a one-week period, where it actually worked the way it should--performing hourly backups. That was, I believe, after I did a reinstall of Leopard--an archive and install, to solve other problems Leopard was having (the new Photoshop not working, the disappearance of the PDF print button, etc.). But for some reason it stopped working on the hour.
In the process of troubleshooting, I've tried Time Machine with two different, new 500 GB external drives--a LaCie, and a Western Digital MyBook, the first a USB drive, the second a firewire/USB (I tried modes of connecting for MyBook one). I've reformatted both drives various times, using both the APM and GUID partition map schemes. I've tried reformatting each drive several times, even zeroing out the data once when erasing the disk. I've done various maintenance scans of both external drives and my internal drives using both Disk Utility and Disk Warrior 4.0, and have corrected whatever errors have appeared.
It's very frustrating, but apparently not restricted to me. Any help out there?

Thanks for the tip Matthew - I can't say definitively that this has solved my Time Machine woes long-term, but I can say in the immediate, it has solved the problem and aloud a successful full backup.
I have been plagued by TM issues since the last update to 10.5.2. It will go days working perfectly, and then all the sudden stop working and report either that it could not create a file, could not write to the disk, could not read the disk, or even couldn't find the disk. Other people have reported success with various formatting/partitioning solutions - all of which I have tried and provided immediate resolution, but then TM fails back again after a couple of days. I have attempted to use various drives and connection methods all with the same result. This has become very frustrating and made Time Machine about as useful as my old Dell sitting in the corner.
I hope this fixes the problem long term, I will update at a later time after it has been successful for more than a few days. I also hope Apple is listening!
I just recently switched to the Mac and am very happy with it - save this one on-going and rather large issue.

  • CSMA/CA NAV/Duration field and random backoff timer - Process

    Hi guys,
Gotta a quick one for you.
    Pls see text below
As a condition to accessing the medium, the MAC Layer checks the value of its network allocation vector (NAV), which is a counter resident at each station that represents the amount of time that the previous frame needs to send its frame. The NAV must be zero before a station can attempt to send a frame. Prior to transmitting a frame, a station calculates the amount of time necessary to send the frame based on the frame's length and data rate. The station places a value representing this time in the duration field in the header of the frame. When stations receive the frame, they examine this duration field value and use it as the basis for setting their corresponding NAVs. This process reserves the medium for the sending station.
An important aspect of the DCF is a random back off timer that a station uses if it detects a busy medium. If the channel is in use, the station must wait a random period of time before attempting to access the medium again. This ensures that multiple stations wanting to send data don't transmit at the same time. The random delay causes stations to wait different periods of time and avoids all of them sensing the medium at exactly the same time, finding the channel idle, transmitting, and colliding with each other. The back off timer significantly reduces the number of collisions and corresponding retransmissions, especially when the number of active users increases.
So, if all clients in a WLAN see a frame come from station A, and station A has set the duration field, all other stations set their NAV and wait until it expires.
THEN, i would expect all stations to start to contend for the medium at exactly the same time.
BUT you have the random backoff timer.
The question is does the NIC add a random number to the NAV field, ie, once it sees station As duration field value (lets say 300us) it adds 47us to this and the NAV is 347us? -- or do all stations decrement the NAV field to zero and then start a random backoff timer?
    Many thx for the help,
    Kind regards,
    Ken

Sorry chaps, but I think you've got this wrong...
The whole point of a NAV being transmitted by the TX & RX ends is to stop hidden node issues - with both ends transmitting the NAV, you are guaranteeing that every 802.11 device within range of either end of the transaction is quiet for the duration of the NAV.
Lets say we have a TX (A) and an RX (B), and another device (C). Lets say that (A) can hear (B), and that (B) can hear (A) and (C). (A) and (C) cannot hear each other.
    (A) <<>> (B) <<>> (C)
    Applying that to your scenario...
    <>
it now counts down to 310, it checks the air, and sees the same packet still being transmitted
    309, 308, 307 .............
gets down to 12us, checks the ait, NOW DOES NOT see a packet being transmitted.
you count down to 11, it check the air, you donot see a packet being transmitted.
    <>
The part where it jumps down from 312 to 11 is wrong. Just because (C) can't hear anything, doesn't mean that (B) isn't receiving something from (A).
    What actually happens with NAV's is;
[Lets say (A) is transmitting to (B)]
    1. (A) transmits NAV, value = "NAV-A"
    2. (B) receives packet, along with everything else in range of (A), on the same channel as (A)
    3. (B) responds to (A) with "NAV-B". "NAV B" = "NAV-A" [minus] "Elapsed Time"
    4. (A) receives packet, along with everything in range of (B), on the same channel as (B)
At this point, every device on that channel will be silent for the duration of the NAV, regardless of whather or not they hear anything during the NAV countdown duration.
When the NAV expires, the Random Backoff Timer begins, and the lowest/ quickest client to get to zero then gets to transmit, and the whole process starts again.
Let me know what you think, but I'm pretty sure that's how it actually works.
    Rgds,
    Richard

  • Random Questions (Scorm Limitations)

I'm battling with Captivate and my LMS as to what is the
problem with some of my quizzes. I have several quizzes that were
created in Captivate 1. Just recently I started randomizing the
questions using Captivate 3. The first one that I tested in my LMS
worked fine until I exited the screen to return to the LMS (after
completing the quiz). The score in my LMS wasn't correct. After
tons of research and discussions with my LMS, I was told that there
is a Scorm spec that limits the amount of suspend data to 4096
characters. Although this 50 question quiz worked fine not
randomized, captivate adds something to the file when it gets
randomized that causes it to go over the 4096 character limit.
Captivate seems to know nothing about the limit. Anybody have
any ideas as to how I can work around this (other than separating
the quiz into 2 quizzes)? Please help.
    Thank you,
    Rhonda

You might want to ask your LMS administrator if they can tell
you what Captivate is storing in the suspend_data value to make it
    go over the limit.
A guess is that Captivate is trying to store the values for
each interaction (the "Report interactions and the score" option in
Quiz Manager ), which would get big pretty quick on a long test.
If that's the case, your only option aside from creating
smaller tests would be to either not randomize the questions, or
forgo tracking individual interaction information and just store
    the user's overall score.

  • Minecraft server causing java to overload?

So I run a minecraft server from my computer. iMac 21.5 inch 2.8 i7 quad core processor 12 gigs of ram. My server has been growing strong for almost a year and this problem started happening a few months ago. Almost everyday I look at my Activity monitor and see that the percentage that java uses is about 700% and it makes the "User" portion of the activity monitor go up to 98% of user 1% of system and 1% Idle. Normally the server only uses about 20-60% of the user portion and everything is running smoothly. But when this happens at random it causes severe lag and i have to restart my computer to fix it. Any suggestions would be great.
I am also using something called McMyAdmin so I can monitor my server from my iphone. That uses something called Mono. I'm not really sure if that has something to do with it.
    Thanks.

Minecraft is a very compute-intensive application. When running an application for a longer time, there could be memory leaks which slows the application down, when running for a long time (like a server usually does!).
Your only solution is to make scheduled restarts. Using McMyAdmin schedule tools this is very easy to setup.

  • Why does my iPhone 4s randomly disconnect with airplay?

I have tried using two different wireless routers but no luck. I have my Apple TV hardwired in to my router and when using an iPhone 4s on AirPlay it will randomly stall/disconnect. When this happens the airplay option usually goes away for a bit and then comes back. I have used it over a Motorola wifi with wireless g speeds, then I plugged it in to a wireless n Dlink network, and same issue. I've also tried more than one iPhone, relocated the modem so there is nothing but about 10 feet of air between the modem and the phone, and still have the issue. Interestingly enough, the iPad 2 does fine. Any ideas?

The multi task bar as you call it does not show apps that are running but rather shows recent apps that you have used.  These apps do not use bandwidth because they are not running. Check your notifications to see which apps might be sending information because they might be using data.  The native apps that came with the phone periodically use data and there is nothing that you can do about that
