Transferring Old Films

Hi!
I have a Sony Handycam Hi8 video camera (Product # CCD-TRV128). I want to transfer the films to iMovie to edit them and transfer them to DVD. The camera has an S-Video, as well as an analog input to watch the films on a TV. Is there any way to link the camera to my Macbook? I don't want to spend too much money, I would prefer a cable over an expensive converter.
Thanks for your help!

Hi, I did this with some old cine film from the seventies. If you can transfer the footage from your camera to vhs by connecting the camera to your tv then recording it so you have it on a vhs tape.My camera came supplied with a cable with the yellow/white/red at one end and an audio/video plug at the other end which plugs into the camera input. ( I guess you could by one if your camera didn't come with it).Once you have it on vhs tape, record it onto a blank tape in the camera using the pre mentioned cable, then connect it to your mac book via firewire. Then you can edit and burn in the usual way. Just one thing though, the footage will be imported as one continuous clip so you may need to manually split it once it's in. Worked for me, hope this helps.

  • Mixing Frame Rates and Creating Old Film Look?

Hello, I'm working with AVCHD footage which is 59.94 fps and have made my sequence settings at this frame rate. I've dragged in a few clips 23.98fps, 24fps, 25fps and 29.97fps, I'm attempting to give it a old film look so was going to render out at 14 fps as this is what 8mm is filmed at, I've never worked with mixed rates so any advice as to whether this is going to work? Should I have my sequence setting at my highest frame rate and the majority of the video is 59.94fps? would it work exporting at 14 or 16 fps?

I've never worked with mixed frame rates, but for the old film look, I like the Posterize Time effect set to 18 (one of the two standards for Super 8 that my camera had) and use Magic Bullet Misfire.

  • Import old film photos as tif, capture date set to 12/31/03 (1903)

Lightroom 5.5 on Mac Mountain Lion, 8gb memory, files on external usb 2.0 hard drive.
Imported old film images as tifs.  Looking in metadata the capture date on all images shows as 12/31/1903 (12/31/03?).  Where did this come from as there is no capture date in the original film tif image.  Is there a setting someplace I missed?  Is this a bug?
    TIA for assistance/answer provided.
    Milt

The date created metadata within the document is hosed, I've seen this with files in the past, not sure what causes it. Why that old date, who knows but it's a common issue:

You'll have to use LR's Edit Capture Time command to fix it.

  • How many frames should I cut out each second to get a old film look?

    Hi,
What is the general rule of thumb (if their is one) of how many frames should be cut every second to achieve a choppy old film look? Or maybe it's not every second? What do you guys do?

you will get a more realistic look if you chop out frames manually
dump the playhead arbitrarily on the time line insert a cut nudge the playhead either i or 2 frames on and cut again discard the frames and either leave the black or butt the clips up for a "skip".
this really doesn't take long to do and is better than a predetermined sequence of chops made by a filter.
CGM do a free filter for aged film to add the hairs, navel lint, boogers etc . .

  • Creating appearance of old film?

Is there a free plugin out there for creating the look of old film?
    Thanks.

There is this thing called Google. And if you type in search terms it produces all sorts of wonderful links.
For example, when I typed in old film look , there were hundreds of useful sites and articles found.
And, if I use the search function in the FCP forum, I can even find all the threads on this topic that dozens of other posters have already asked.
    Searching is an amazing resource.

Try using Auto Color and adjust the temporal smoothing as needed.

  • Intro numbers to an old film or TV

I'm looking for some reference images or info that deals with old school film.
What are those numbers called that you sometimes see at the beginning of an old movie. Where the numbers tic down 3...2...1 and then a beep or something and the movie starts.
It's for a design project I'm working on.
    Thanks

It's called Leader or Academy Leader and it can be found in a number of places. Final Cut itself comes with an Academy leader project in the Extras folder of the install disk. If you are looking something that looks more old fashioned, you can find old film leader from any number of Film footage/stock art companies.

  • Transfering old documents and the helvetica bug

Is there any way of avoiding the helvetica bug when transfering old documents?
I have thousands of documents created on an I book power PC G 3, 500 MHz, OS 10.3 and AW 6.2.9. These have chicago script and when transfered to mac book 1.83 GHz, OS10.4 and AW 6.2.9, they now have helvetica text which I find difficult on the eye. It would a pain to individually change them to another text. There does not appear to be chicago text on the macbook. The AW on the I book was upgraded from clarisworks to the latest version but the AW on the macbook was a new version out of the box, then upgraded to 6.2.9.
I aplogise in advance because I think this is question may already be answered but I couldn't find it in discussions.
    Eamonn Lim

    Hi Eamonn,
I think the key line in your post is this one:
"There does not appear to be chicago text on the macbook."
If that;s the case, then what you're seeing may be font substitution, rather than the Helvetica bug. This could be good news or bad.
If you still have your iBook G3, you may be able to transfer the Chicago font from it to your MacBook. If that's possible, If the MacBook recognizes the font, and If it's not the Helvetica bug, just having the font avbailable should cure the problem.
The bad news? If any of the three conditions above aren't true, you may be stuck with changing them individually.
Even the bad news isn't all bad though, if are set entirely in Chicago. You'll only need to change each document once, and won't need to change it at all until the first time you open it.
Open the document, press command-A to Select All, choose the new font, click anywhere to deselect, then Save the document. Then carry on with reading the document.
If it IS the dreaded Helvetica bug, a search of the forum on "helvetica" will bring up instructions on solving.
And I suspect it's possible to do a batch change of the documents' fonts using an AppleScript, if the 'do as needed' approach doesn't fit your needs.

  • Transferring camcorder film from pc

I understand that I now have to transfer my camcorder film via my old pc laptop with a firewire, but I have hours and hours of film. How do I then transfer these huge files to my macbook!
    Any advice would be great
    Many thanks

Those programs would not run under OS X. You need either OS X versions or you would have to install windows and even then transferring them may not work. You would probably need to reinstall them in windows on your MacBook.

  • Transferring old photos from one iPhone to another.

I've recently upgraded to an iPhone 4S from a 3GS. The 3GS has several problems including not charging and not syncing with my macbook/iTunes. I've backed up on iCloud and when i got the 4S I used that to transfer all my apps and stuff.
Anyway, only 57 photos have transferred over out of 356. How do I get the rest? I've tried doing another back up from iCloud on both the 3GS and 4S to no avail. I don't want to lose the photos and I can't transfer them to iPhoto either because my old phone won't sync with my macbook. Help?

  • Transferred old apple settings, now no Internet connection

I just transferred all my old settings from my old Airport Extreme to the new Dual Band one. I then followed the prompts and unplugged the old AE, and plugged the WAN connection into the new AE.
Now, I have no internet, although my new AEDB shows green light... Anyone know what I can do about this?

I have solved this issue. It was a combination of two problems. When I migrated the settings from the old machine, I also created a Guest Network for a friend that was visiting. My Macbook Pro joined the Guest Network which for some reason was NOT sharing Internet connection.
The solution was to turn off the Guest Network and allow the MBP to connect to the correct IP range.
Chances are that not completely restarting the machine was a reason for not being able to join, but I did restart the machine yesterday a few times and wasn't getting any help.
Anyhow, for whatever it is worth, my situation is solved. Not sure what will happen when I need to re-enable the guest network.

  • Transferred old mac to new mac and now some applications not opening

Just bought a new mac pro and transferred from my old mac pro via time machine back-up/migration assistant when setting new computer.
Both old and new running snow leopard and had issues with opening imovie, etc. but has since been resolved. I am trying to open my photoshop and won't open...same with illustrator. Do not have back-up disks of both programs to reinstall, so cannot go that route.
    Help, please.
Phone help through apple suggest me to wipe new mac clean and start all over....have done that already and not working.

Photoshop and Illustrator have to be activated through Adobe on the new machine, and of course they are only licensed to be activated and used on one machine at a time. If you have legitimate licenses for them, call Adobe for advice on de-activating them on the old machine and activating them on the new one. If you don't have legitimate licenses for them, as your lack of installer discs suggests may be the case, then tough luck.

  • Settings for old film look

I'm new here and need some help, or I mean lots of help. I am sure these are simple but....
    1) I have a Canon XHA1S and Adobe Premiere CS4 and need to know how to get the lines effect in the film to make it look old and scratched?
    2) How do I get the old yellowed look from the color correction, right? Or do I need a filter?
    3) One last question, How do I get black and white if i wanted?
    Thanks and appreciate your time.

Digieffects has been coming out with some sweet, very cheap moduals based on plug-ins they bought from Buena Software and Walker FX.
Camera Mapper is amazing, it makes camera projection a snap (even better than PS's Vanishing point). You could build amazing 3d Matte Paintings and backgrounds with it.
The equally amazing photoreal Falloff Lighting fills a huge gap in AE's light/3d system. Having the option for inverse/square (in plain english: it gives you option to make AE's light actually work like a real light does).  A bargain at 50 bucks.

  • Transferring old text messages

I just got a new iPhone 4S and I want to transfer my old text message conversations from my iPhone 3 over to my new phone. Is there any way to do this. I have transfered my apps, songs, videos, pictures, but I can't figure out how to transfer the text message conversations.

    Hi @bkenny13 ,
The messages are stored in database files as explained in
    http://discussions.nokia.com/t5/Nokia-Suite/Where-Does-Suite-Store-Sync-d-Messages-amp-in-What-Forma...
Videos and pictures are in the folders that you or Windows decided to use
Upgrading Windows can be a scary thing, especially if you do a clean install and restore manually afterwards. It is the best way to get a smooth running Windows, but please make sure that everything is copied to an external hard drive first, that way you have a way to find and restore things that you didn't know you were going to miss!
