Raptors won't format (Win XP) on Intel ICH5R

I have the 865PE Neo2 FIS2R board and 2 WD Raptors that I want to run in a raid0 stripe. I thought the Intel raid controller might be faster than the promise controller (does anyone have raid 0 specs for both controllers). I was able to create the array on the controller and start windows and supply the driver but when windows went to format the drives, it gave an error to check the cables or power. I thought this was a problem w/ the driver. I tried several different intel drivers with the same result.
I now have the raptors running in a raid0 stripe off the promise controller. Just wanted to know why they don't work off the Intel Raid controller....
thx!

Some people have simply NOT been able to get these drives working on the ICH5R controller. If you have the latest Bios and are certain everything is connected(sounds like you do) then I can't think of anything else to try. There were some problems with earlier versions of these drives. Look on the chip near the IDE to SATA bridge. The ones that had the string "...B3P.." and some of the B4P had trouble. The newer B5P's are supposed to be better but at least one person here posted that it made no difference for him.
As for performance, I think you'll get similar speed on the Promise controller. If you use Aida32 benchmark, I'd be interested in seeing a bench of those drives. You can see performance I get with 2-80GB seagate SATA drives on the Promise controller Here
The comparison drive in green on the graph is a single Raptor on the Intel controller.

  • Disk Utility won't format my WD Elements 1TB Hard Drive.

I've searched the forums for this and have seen several questions addressing this but none of the solutions are working for me. Here's my problem:
My IMac died on me the other day and would not reboot. Spoke with Apple support and they decided my OS had become corrupted and that the only solution was a complete reinstall. To save my data the rep walked me through installing the OS on an external HD. This has worked great and I'm currently working off that drive and have managed to pull a lot of my data off the IMac's HD to that external drive. But I've run out of space; it was only 120GB and I've got about 144 GB of data left to retrieve. So I purchased a WD Elements 1 TB external HD and want to do the same thing that I did with other drive...install the operating system on it and pull all the data off the original computer HD to it. But I cannot for the life of me get anything to work. Unfortunately I purchased a drive that is formatted for windows (NTFS). I've gone through the steps found in this forum, and they're the same steps the rep walked me through with the first drive: launch Disc Utility, select the drive, click Partition, give the volume a name, click options to choose GUID Partition Table, and then under Volume Scheme: choose Partition 1, click apply.
But what happens with this drive is the minute I change the Volume Scheme from "current" to "partition 1", all the options and buttons go grey. So I'm unable to click apply to make the changes. I've tried several different times and nothing is working. I've even tried to just format it using the "current" volume scheme but that gives me an error...something about partition failed...permission denied.
At this point I'd be happy with just formatting the drive so I can just drag the files I want off onto it...but I can't seem to find any solutions. I took the drive to a Windows XP machine I have and tried to format it from NTFS to Fat32, thinking maybe the Mac would work with it then but my XP machine won't format into Fat32...only EXFat. Tried that but the Mac wouldn't even show the drive then. Have reformatted it back to NTFS now.
I'm probably going to end up calling Mac support again but they're closed now I'm just curious to see what you folks might be able to come up with.
Good thing I shave my head as I'd have probably ripped it all out by now.

den.thed....that's interesting. The drive I have been having problems doesn't say anywhere on it that it has that Smartware software on it. Didn't see any files on the drive at all. After tech support at both Western Digital and Apple said they'd never heard of this before, I'm returning the drive and buying one that's preformatted for Apple. The drive I ordered does have that software on it, but since I have no fancy plans for this drive other than just backing up files with Time Machine I'll probably just install their software and be happy if it works. If it causes a problem I'll look into that link you suggested.
The Mac support guy I spoke to thought that if I could get the drive formatted into Fat32 it should be able to be reformatted by my Mac. But after having to download software so that I could get it formatted into Fat32 (My XP machine only gave me the option of ExFat), it still wouldn't work. As soon as I tried to assign the partition under the volume scheme all my options greyed out and I could proceed no further. Very frustrating.
So we'll find out tomorrow if the new drive does the tricks.
So even though my problem was not solved, I appreciate the feedback and advice.

  • I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format"

I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format". Can someone please help me sort this problem, it's so frustrating!!!!!!

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

  • Windows won't format my iPod classic 160 GB

Hi, I’m having trouble formatting my iPod classic 160GB.
It started after I plugged it into a computer I don’t really use to put some new music on it, and then when I went to use the iPod the next morning I had to choose language and everything was gone. It worked fine the night before with both the new music and the old, but now it says in the settings of the iPod that I have 0 KB free, even though there’s nothing on it (all the space is filled with “other”, and I don’t know what that means).
When I connect it to the computer it says I have to format it to use it, but when I try to do so Windows can’t finish formatting. It also just shows up as “portable disc (E:)” instead of the name I’ve given it. I’ve tried putting it in disk mode and then it shows up with the correct name, saying I have 117 GB out of 148 GB left to use. Which is correct, but windows still won’t format it, or scan it for errors in error checking. If I try checking for errors when it’s not in disk mode a window pops up saying that they can’t access the disk.
I bought this iPod last year so it’s not old. I really have no clue what do to from here and I would appreciate help so much!!

I want to password protect an external dvd. I try using disc utility, but it won't format with encryption as it claims in the Help instructions. I am using Lion. Any ideas?
Using Disk Utility, I select the disc image that contains the data that I want to backup to a DVD and select Burn. The program asks that a blank DVD be inserted.  When I do that, no format pop-up appears as is indicated in the Help instuctions.  If I procede with the burn, there is no password protection.  Before I converted to Lion, I used to use Disk Utility to burn backup DVDs without any problems.

AFAIK, you create an encrypted disk image and burn that to DVD. There's nothing else to do, but I might be mistaken.

  • 2x 80gig raid0 Maxtor won't format

    Hey guys,
I've been searching around the forum looking for the same problem, I've seen 1 guy having the same problem, but without a solution given.
I'd reallly appreciate it if anyone could tell me WHY:
    My 2hd's won't format any further than 20% ???
I've installed the Promise Fasttrack drivers given on the MSI CD. I've put those on a floppy and my array was recognised right away as 1x 156Gb large space.
When I try to install windows in a new partition (no matter what size), the format section keeps hanging at 20% ... anyone knows the answer? ..  I'd realllyy like to know
    grtz,
    moi

Well my HD's are in a striped array, so they're getting formatted simultaniously, because they're setup in raid0. Together they make 1 big space of 156gb (2x 80Gb HD's)
They are connected to the promise raid controller and it's also beeing recognised, but the problem is that during winXP or Win2k or whatever - installation..  the format won't go any further than 20%..  I created a partition of 5gb ..  that also hung on 20%, just like when formatting the whole 160Gb.
I have installed the HD's on the PATA controller now, without raid that is, because I've seen on several forums that there are more ppl with the same problem with the same dongle.
So it's probably the Asus dongle (which should be universal) that makes it impossible to set 2 HD's in a striped array..  they apparently DO work in a mirrored array......... strange it is.
I don't think that putting these disks on the VIA controller will make this HD's format... and I'm not going to try untill I know for sure, because I've configured winxp and all ..  took me quite a while to make it as I wanted it.

  • Need Intel ICH5R Driver to boot in DOS.

Need to be able to access my Intel® ICH5R Chipset RAID0 in DOS to create/load GHOST image of my system. Does Intel® ICH5R Chipset have DOS drivers?

Aulex:  What version of Ghost are you using?  Does it use 2 floppies? and the first one is essentially a WIN98Se boot floppy?  and the second one is the Ghost recovery floppy?
If so, the boot floppy usually contains about 5 or 6 universal ASPI drivers some of them are SCSI drivers.  When I use drive image 5.01 to restore my system using floppies, the boot floppy loads these drivers.  (If the drives are formatted NTFS, DOS won't see them at the DOS prompt.)  When I put in the second floppy and run D.I. 5.01, it sees all the drives, whether they are formatted FAT32 or NTFS, including both my RAID 0 volumes, one of which uses the ICH5R.  I can do a backup or restore.
The reason I don't have to load 'DOS RAID' drivers is because the onboard (Promise, HighPoint) and onchip (ICH5R) RAID controllers are  fancy SCSI controllers and the universal drivers that are loaded from DOS boot floppy work.
So if your Ghost bootable floppy(s) contain these drivers, give it a try.
FYI:  Drive Image 7.0 askes you for the RAID drivers (the F6 prompt, like when you install Win XP).  You actually use the D.I. 7 program CD to boot, then it asks you for RAID drivers.

  • HELP! INTEL ICH5R Controller/S-ATA - "No RAID"

Hi to all who gave me advice for setting up two S-ATA drives on the Intel ICH5R controller with "NO" RAID.  I really need some help.
Well, I got my two "NEW" S-ATA drives this afternoon and after following the advice given by several users in this thread, I'm having ptoblems trying to install Windows XP and I'm getting messages like "missing operating system", "Invalid system disk, (when XP CD is in CD drive) replace the disk and press any key", so I need some help please.
Ok, I setup the BIOS settings in Integrated Perpherals/On-Chip IDE Configuration to:
    Mode: NATIVE
    ATA Configuration: S-ATA Only
    Keep S-ATA Enabled: YES
    Keep P-ATA Enabled: YES
    P-ATA Channel Selection: BOTH
    Configure S-ATA as RAID: NO
BTW, given that I will have two Seagate S-ATA drives on SER1 & SER2 and one P-ATA drive (LG CDRW) on IDE1 as Master and the other P-ATA drive (LG DVD) on IDE2 as Master, I was just wondering if the "other options" in "On-Chip IDE Configuration" may be causing my problems and need to be altered and if so, what to?
I.e. "Combined Mode Option" and S-ATA Ports Definition"
I then switched off the computer and connected my two Seagate S-ATA drives
    (ST380013AS 7200.7 80GB on SER1 & ST3120026AS 7200.7 120GB on SER2).
I turned on computer and drives were shown on POST screen as "Third IDE Master (80GB) and 4th IDE Master (120GB). I then entered BIOS to check if they were shown and they were and I selected the "ST380013AS 7200.7 80GB drive" as my 3rd boot device with the CD as my first boot device and the floppy as my second.
BOTH drives were already set to "AUTO", but the label on the physical drives states that you should choose "AUTO" and enable "LARGE BLOCK ADDRESSING (LBA), but I could not see an option for this. I did not get any software with the disk but the drive label states that you chould use "Disc Wizard" but I did not have this so I used an updated Boot Floppy that works with drives up to 137GB. I FDISK'd the 80GB drive and formatted it to FAT32 (although I would not normally do this because XP setup always finds my new partitioned ATA133 drives and starts setup and then formats it).
Note: During format, the drive was shown as "Formatting 10,780.56M" and for an 80GB drive, this did not seem right but after formatting, it showed as 76,297,91MB total disk space. FDISK showed the drive as 76,317MBytes.
Also in the BIOS, the 80GB drive is shown with "CYLINDERS:38309", "HEADS:16", SECTORS:255", MAXIMUM CAPACITY:80GB and "WRITE PRECOMPENSATION:(nothing was shown for this - what is this and should there be a reading for it)?
I then restarted the computer with the XP CD in the Master CD drive and the cd was found and showed "Press any key to continue......" but this was quickly followed by "Invalid System Disk - Replace the disk and press any key".
I tried this many times but always get the same message. Can anyone who has setup S-ATA drives on ICH5R with "no RAID" and then installed a fresh copy of XP, please help, or anyone who can help with this, I would be very grateful.
    Regards

    Hi
Ok, I have some more information regarding the Intel ICH5R Controller and S-ATA drives.
I tried your suggestions of " Both SATA+PATA in "On-Chip IDE Config"...." and also a few others, but it made no difference and I still got "invalid disk message".  Some changes like "P-ATA only" made my CDRW/DVD drives not show up during POST or in the BIOS or My Computer.
I then used the original advice I was given:
    Mode: NATIVE
    ATA Configuration: S-ATA Only
    Keep S-ATA Enabled: YES
    Keep P-ATA Enabled: YES
    P-ATA Channel Selection: BOTH
    Configure S-ATA as RAID: NO
but also changed "Combined Mode Option" to "S-ATA 1st Channel and the "S-ATA Ports Definition" to P0-1st. /P1-2nd.  I then inserted the XP CD and restarted the computer and this time XP installation went ahead without any 'invalid disk' messages and XP was installed without problems but I have noticed a few weird things which I would like some help with please, especially Q1:
Q1:  During POST, both my S-ATA drives which are on SER1 & SER2, were shown as the Third and Fourth IDE Masters and as UDMA 5.  Surely this can't be correct?
I know ATA133 is UDMA 6 and the S-ATA drives are supposed to run at 150Mb/sec but I don't know if there is a standard for that speed at the moment but it should not be shown as UDMA 5 on POST and also in Device Manager?  At the very least it should be UDMA 6?
Q2:  In Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, it shows:
    Primary IDE Channel
Device 0 Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA 5  (S-ATA 80GB Drive)
Device 1 Current Transfer Mode: Not applicale
    Primary IDE Channel
Device 0 Current Transfer Mode: Not applicable
Device 1 Current Transfer Mode: Not applicable
    Secondary IDE Channel
Device 0 Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA 5 (S-ATA 120GB Drive)
Device 1 Current Transfer Mode: Not applicable
    Secondary IDE Channel
Device 0 Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA 2 (LG CDRW Drive)
Device 1 Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA 2 (LG DVD Drive)
??Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller?
??Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller?
?? After installing the Intel .INF Update, these entries changed to "Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers".  With my two previous ATA133 drives installed in the same computer, there was only one "Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers" in Device Manager, so with the S-ATA drives installed, why are there now two entries in Device Manager?
Q3:  In "My Computer", the total capacity of my Seagate S-ATA 80GB drive is shown as 74.5GB (80,015,491,072 Bytes).  Iknow that the CMOS value is considerably less that the purchased disk size, but where has the other 4.5GB gone?
Q4:  What is the purpose of the second "Primary IDE Channel" entry in Device Manager?

  • Intel Ich5r -- Promise Controller

    PROBLEM -
I have 2 SATA drives under the Intel ICH5R controller and one extra SATA drive running in slot 3 that is eing controlled by the probise controller.  The goal is to have all drives under one controller, Intel or Promise.  At first i wanted to have them all under the ICH5R controller but have found this doesnt work. Now i am wanting to know if it is possible to have all 3 drives running under the promise controller and if so then is it possible to simply transfer the current raid setup from the intel to the promise without having to start from fresh.

The purpose was not putting the 3rd drive intro raid but to have that drive run independently as its own entity under the same controller to eliminate loading up 2 controllers as it adds time to load up and also to resources..  Thats what im trying to reduce as this system takes a long time to load.

  • T420 GT1/GT2 Intel Video Driver Won't Install - Win 7

    Hello,
Last night I tried updating my video drivers to the latest Intel HD Graphics Driver (version 8.15.10.2769) and NVIDIA Optimus Display Driver (version 8.17.12.7658), both from Lenovo's website. Neither seemed to work. After trying to install the Intel driver I would get an error message saying my system does not meet the minimum requirements...I'm not sure how this can be the case when I downloaded the driver from Lenovo's site for my model (T420, model 4177-CTO).
Also, updating the NVIDIA driver seemed to work (the intsall finished and computer restarted), however, after rebooting no video driver showed up in device manager for the discrete card. I tried downloading the latest driver from NVIDIA's website and got an error saying it couldn't detect the hardware.
Another thing I noticed after attempting these updates was within device manager, the "2nd generation Intel(R) Core(TM) processor family PCI Express Controller - 0101" had a yellow caution/explamation point next to it, but device manager said the driver was up to date.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

I'm getting black screen in Win 7. This is very weird - the only help is uninstall intel HD graphics driver (everything is fine under standard VGA windows supplied driver- MBP i7 13.3') or use external display through HDMI. Any suggestion how to fix this?

    Hi,
    i have the same issue.
You need to restore Win7 before this installation
and install 260.99 version of the driver.
It seems to be the more recent one that works with Apple hardware at this time.

  • Windows 8.1 install, partition won't format / install

I'm having lots of problems installing Windows on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)
I've install windows on it before, but after a drivers issue I had to do a fresh install of windows... that turn into a fresh install of OS X because I ended up with freespace that couldn't formatted. That's fixed now because I formatted to one partition with a complete fresh install.
Now I'm running into the issue that started it all. Getting past the partition screen of the windows 8.1 installation. I'm stuck in the partition screen and it won't let me continue because of the format of my partition for bootcamp. I've followed the instruction very thoroughly. I'm using a fusion drive as well.
I've used several different versions of windows 8.1 ISOs. The checksum checks out. FileVault is off. No other usb's are installed. The usb I'm using is 2.0.
Any clues? I did a pram reset and disk repair after BCA.
