RDBMS integration

Hello,
Anyone has already implemented a link between SUN IDM and an oracle database that has multiple tables ?
How read/write be performed on a relationnal model ?
Thanks for you help

Richard,
Yes, it's coming. The beta test should be available this Fall. I don't have more specific dates, but it is definitely in the works.
Thanks,

If you are using a cluster you need to make sure the connection pool and data source are deployed on the admin server. I have had this problem many times before.

  • Rdbms adapter for Weblogic integrator 7.0--Query

I am trying to configure RDBMS Event adapter (version 7.0 sp2) for Oracle 8i database.
We have gone through the full cycle of configuration, installation as specified
    in the product
    documentation without any error
But when we are trying to test the event we are getting a response as "Timed out"
If anybody has ever encountered similar problems and has been able to successfull
    solve it
    then your suggestions are welcome.

Which was the event you tried to test?
If it is timestamp event then the Weblogic server system date and EIS system date
    should be in sync.

We're trying to integrate Discoverer with Portal unsuccessfully.
We made many things in accordance with oracle's documentation until add discoverer portlets (worksheet and list of workbooks) in a test page.
In view mode, the worksheet portlet shows the error:
"The portlet has not been defined. The publisher must define the portlet by clicking on Edit Defaults for the portlet on the edit mode of this page. Please contact the publisher of this page."
We think we have to edit properties before. Is this? Anyway edit worksheet portlet crashes between step 1 and 2. The error is: "The listener returned the following Message: 500 Internal Server Error".
We have a public conection created in EM and a discoverer application which can be viewed using plus or viewer.

    Hi there,
Have you applied any patches to 9ias since it was first installed? We had the same problem and had to apply a couple of patches to get the portlets working.
    1. Apply the 9.0.2.53.16 one-off patch for Oracle 9iAS Discoverer which takes Discoverer up to 9.0.2.53.16. This patch appears to be password protected and you need to get someone at Oracle support to give you a password.
    2. Apply the Discoverer Portlet Provider: 9.0.2.53.00c patch (patch no. 2595444) which gives you a new discportal.xsl file that actually works. It's this second step that solves your problem but you need to do step 1 before this. This is password protected as well.
    3. As you've upgraded Disco on the server to 9.0.2.53, you'll need to upgrade Disco Admin & Desktop within your 9iDS installation using patch no. 2555265. This is because Disco 9.0.2.53 uses an upgraded EUL that Disco Admin & Desktop need to be patched to use.
This was the course of action Oracle support advised us about nine months ago. Of course they may have released a further patch to Disco that does 1 & 2 in one go, but we regularly carry out steps 1 and 2 on servers we use and we can use the Disco portlets successfully.
    Hope this helps

  • Install instructions for Search Modeler and integrating with Apps 11i

Below are all the steps I took for creating integrating Search Modeler with an Oracle E-Business Suite 11.5.10.2 ATG RUP 7 instance called ERNIE.
Much thanks to Oracle Support ( Rajesh Ghosh, Vikas Soolapani and Roger Ford), as this simply wouldn't have been possible without them.
There are a few things in this document that may not be pertinent to your environment if you're doing this. I've made attempts to clarify those possibly optional sections in the documentation.
I've broken the document down into the following multiple parts
o Setting up a new RedHat 4.8 x86 server called ausSEARCHdev (The server is in AUStin, TX, is dedicated to SEARCH, and is for our DEV environment)
o SES (Secure Enterprise Search 10.1.8.2 install
    o SES 10.1.8.4 patchset install
    o SES CPU patch apply
o Standalone OC4J and ADF installation
o Search Modeler installation and configuration
o Configure ERNIE Apps instance to be on valid self-signed SSL certificate
o Import ERNIE SSL certificate into SES and Search Modeler
    using aussearchdev initially

we're going to go with the standalone OC4j 10.1.3.3 and Oracle ADF 10.1.3.3 method
The URLs for these products are
    http://blogs.oracle.com/ebssearch/2009/10/available_now_oracle_search_modeler_11_for_oracle_e-business_suite_11i.html
    and specifically
    OC4J - http://download.oracle.com/otn/java/oc4j/101330/oc4j_extended_101330.zip
    ADF - http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/jdev/htdocs/adfinstaller10133.html
    OC4J install
First you need to have Java 1.5 on the machine. Latest is 1.5.0_22. Package is in /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES
    as root on aussearchdev
    cd /usr/local
    cp /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES/jdk-1_5_0_22-linux-i586.bin .
    chmod 700 jdk-1_5_0_22-linux-i586.bin
    ./jdk-1_5_0_22-linux-i586.bin
    yes
install OC4J just by copying over the directory

    mkdir -p /d01/oracle/oc4j
    cd /d01/oracle/oc4j
    cp -r /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES/oc4j/* .
    ADF install
    vi /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES/adf/adfinstaller.properties
    change the following
    OracleHome = /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES/adf
    DesHome = /d01/oracle/oc4j/
    type = OC4J
    as root
    cd /usr/bin
    rm java
    (yes)
    ln -s /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_22/bin/java
    su - oracle
java -version     should now return 1.5.0_22
    export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/jdk1.5.0_22
    cd /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES/adf
    java -jar runinstaller.jar -version
returns The version for the ADF libraries being installed is 10.1.3.41.57 - yes, that is apparently 10.1.3.3.
    java -jar runinstaller.jar adfinstaller.properties

So, creating a self signed SSL certificate for ERNIE EBS instance (this will not work if you use an SSL certificate for another server like say, PROD)
    doing this on ausernieapp
    openssl genrsa -des3 -out ausernieapp.key 1024
    PEM key is ausernieapp
openssl req -new -key ausernieapp.key -out ausernieapp.csr

    Organizational Unit Name Information Technology
    Common Name ausernieapp.domainname.com
    Email address [email protected]
    No challenge password
    No optional company name
Now let's remove the passphrase from the key
    cp ausernieapp.key ausernieapp.key.orig
openssl rsa -in ausernieapp.key.orig -out ausernieapp.key
    Now let's generate a self-signed certificate
    openssl x509 -req -days 1000 -in ausernieapp.csr -signkey ausernieapp.key -out ausernieapp.crt
Install the private key and certificate
    cd $IAS_ORACLE_HOME/Apache/Apache/conf/ssl.crt

Below are all the steps I took for creating integrating Search Modeler with an Oracle E-Business Suite 11.5.10.2 ATG RUP 7 instance called ERNIE.
Much thanks to Oracle Support ( Rajesh Ghosh, Vikas Soolapani and Roger Ford), as this simply wouldn't have been possible without them.
There are a few things in this document that may not be pertinent to your environment if you're doing this. I've made attempts to clarify those possibly optional sections in the documentation.
I've broken the document down into the following multiple parts
o Setting up a new RedHat 4.8 x86 server called ausSEARCHdev (The server is in AUStin, TX, is dedicated to SEARCH, and is for our DEV environment)
o SES (Secure Enterprise Search 10.1.8.2 install
    o SES 10.1.8.4 patchset install
    o SES CPU patch apply
o Standalone OC4J and ADF installation
o Search Modeler installation and configuration
o Configure ERNIE Apps instance to be on valid self-signed SSL certificate
o Import ERNIE SSL certificate into SES and Search Modeler
    using aussearchdev initially
    rh4 x86, default oracle build

we're going to go with the standalone OC4j 10.1.3.3 and Oracle ADF 10.1.3.3 method
The URLs for these products are
    http://blogs.oracle.com/ebssearch/2009/10/available_now_oracle_search_modeler_11_for_oracle_e-business_suite_11i.html

    ADF - http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/jdev/htdocs/adfinstaller10133.html
    OC4J install
First you need to have Java 1.5 on the machine. Latest is 1.5.0_22. Package is in /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES
    as root on aussearchdev
    cd /usr/local
    cp /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES/jdk-1_5_0_22-linux-i586.bin .

    change the following
    OracleHome = /mnt/oraclebackup/deathstar_patches/SES/adf
    DesHome = /d01/oracle/oc4j/
    type = OC4J
    as root
    cd /usr/bin
    rm java

    ln -s /usr/local/jdk1.5.0_22/bin/java
    su - oracle
java -version     should now return 1.5.0_22
    export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/jdk1.5.0_22

  • Java API's supported in the Jdeveloper, IAS, and RDBMS product components

If there are any technical errors or "mistatement of the facts" in this posting, please let me know about them ..
This article is being delivered in Draft form and may contain
errors. Please use the MetaLink "Feedback" button to advise
Oracle of any issues related to this article.
    PURPOSE
This article describes the "Enterprise Java Beans" (EJB), "Java Server Pages"
(JSP) and servlets Application Programming Interfaces (API) supported by the
Oracle products, Jdeveloper, Internet Application Server (IAS) and the Oracle
RDBMS release 2 and release 3, also known as Version 8.1.6 and 8.1.7,
    respectively.
    SCOPE & APPLICATION
All parties interested in the Java API's supported by these products.
Java API's supported in the Jdeveloper, IAS, and RDBMS product components
    JDEVELOPER
JDEVELOPER is Oracle's Java development tool designed for coding / development,
testing / debugging, and deployment of Java Applications to the IAS and
    RDBMS platforms.
With the java software api's being in a constant state of evolution, each new
release of Jdeveloper adds support for the "then current" version of the java
software api's, if it does not already have it implemented.
JDEVELOPER SERVLET API JSP API EJB API
    VERSION VERSION VERSION VERSION
    3.2.X.X 2.2 1.1 1.1
    3.1.X.X 2.1 1.0 1.0
    NOTE :
Sun Microsystems and their advisory teams (Oracle is on it) is working on
"draft" specifications for the next version of all of these API's

    JSP -------> http://java.sun.com/products/jsp/index.html
    Servlets --> http://java.sun.com/products/servlet/?frontpage-javaplatform
It is anticipated that future releases of Jdeveloper will continue to be
upgraded to include support for the next version of each api.

    IAS
IAS is Oracle's next evolution of the web server and application server
product technology superceeding the Web Application Server (WAS) and Oracle
    Application Server (OAS) product lines.

    8i(1.0.0-UNIX) 2.0 1.0 1.0 816
The IAS product contains two Java Virtual Machines (JVM) within it's
    architecture.
    They are called :
    1) APACHE JSERV servlet engine
    2) ORACLE ENTERPRISE JAVA ENGINE (EJE)
    APACHE JSERV servlet engine
The APACHE JSERV servlet engine is an EXISTING product licensed from the
apache group which supports the servlet api 2.0.ONLY.
The APACHE JSERV product does not support ANY JSP's unless the customer
installs a third party jsp engine.
The IAS 8i/9i which has the APACHE JSERV product embedded in it, comes with
Oracle's JSP engine (OJSP) already integrated into it. OJSP supports JSP's up
to the specific JSP engine version documented in the Oracle Universal
Installer (OUI) for the 8.1.7 RDBMS or the IAS products. It is also documented
    in the product's release notes.
    Oracle ENTERPRISE JAVA ENGINE (EJE)
The EJE formerly known as :
    1) Oracle 8i Java Virtual Machine (JVM)
    2) JSERVER component,
    3) Aurora JVM
was originally releas ed in the RDBMS 8.1.5 database with jdk 1.1.6 based java
    support.
The currently supported versions of the Oracle 8i RDBMS, versions 2 and 3,
also known as Version 8.1.6 and 8.1.7, respectively, provides a jdk 1.2.1
    based java virtual machine support.
    "EJE" Version 816
This EJE, found in rdbms 8.1.6 and IAS 8i, contains support for the ejb
api 1.0, corba, and java stored procedures.
    "EJE" Version 817
This EJE, found in rdbms 8.1.7 and IAS 9i, contains support for the ejb,
corba, and java stored procedures as well as the Oracle Servlet Engine (OSE)
which provides support for the servlets 2.2 api and JSP 1.1 api.
    Note :
EJB support in the "EJE" Version 817 has been upgraded to comply with the EJB
1.1 api specification which includes "entity beans" support.
What is the bottom line ??
    1) Servlets deployed to the APACHE JSERV must comply with servlet api 2.0.
    2) Servlets 2.1 or higher are only supported in EJE's OSE component found in
the rdbms 817 or ias 9i products. Servlets api 2.0 can also run in the OSE.

which jvm is used by jserv ?? EJE or a separate jdk ?
The Jserv servlet engine is running in a separate jdk JVM external to the EJE jvm which is embedded within the "database" component of ias and the RDBMS.
See the reference below for more details ...
if jserv only support old apis, why it is in oracle's products ?
i would assume that the oracle servlet engine was under development when ias 8i was released and became available in time for the ias 9i and rdbms 817 products.
looking back in history leads me to believe ias 8i was a migration path to get to ias 9i or rdbms 817.
Based upon the long history of new releases of every oracle product being upgraded with new features, it's reasonable to assume that these products will continue to evolve.
when I deploy a jsp how to deploy in the right servlet container ("EJE") ?
as documented in the reference below, you can deploy JSP's to either the apache jserv jvm or the EJE since the ORACLE JSP engine functionality is in both jvm's.
there are many posts where you can see that people have deploy in jserv and they have problems because they don't use the right container (servlet 2.0 instead of
    servlet 2.2) http://technet.oracle.com:89/ubb/Forum2/HTML/006349.html
when ias 8i came out this was clearly an issue since servlet support was at api 2.0, and the current servlet api was probably at 2.1.
oracle clearly made every effort to get ias 9i released quickly to supply a servlet 2.1 and 2.2 capable engine to resolve this issue.
since ias 9i and rdbms 8.1.7 are available this is no longer an issue.
The reference below explains the architecture and understanding it would eliminate a lot of "deploy to the wrong ias 9i component" issues.
so why jserv is bundled with oracle 8i/9ias since EJE support the right api version ?
if in ias 9i release , oracle had removed the jserv component without any advance warning, many customers would have been very upset since oracle makes every attempt to give advance notice before removal of functionality.

    Hi Peddi,
I gave TRUNC to both of the dates. But still the same issue. I think the problem is in returning the BolbDomain.

  • E-business suite R12 and webcenter integration

    Hello,
We are integrating E-business suite R12 with webcenter.
We followed the steps from the white paper: https://support.oracle.com/CSP/main/article?cmd=show&id=1074345.1&type=NOT
We successfully completed step 1 through 4 and we are stuck at step 5 ( Configure E-Business Suite for WebCenter Integration )
We edited the AutoConfig Context File ($CONTEXT_FILE) to Specify WebCenter host in variable "List of nodes that have access to Portlet Producer URLs"
    Here is the sample change:
<trusted_portals oa_var="s_trusted_portals" customized="yes">ap123sun.us.oracle.com ap456sun.us.oracle.com</trusted_portals>After doing this, when we try to access WSDL URL: http://[Release_12_host]:[port]/OA_HTML/portlets/WSRPBaseService?WSDL, we are getting '403 Forbidden' error. Also, accessing http://<EBS_HOST>:<PORT>/OA_HTML/providers/OAFrameworkProvider is returning '403 Forbidden' error
Please let us know if we missed any step.

    Hussein,
Database Version is RDBMS 11.2.0.2; Oracle EBS Version is R-12.1.3; OS is HP-UX Itanium 64-Bit Version 11.31 (for DB and Apps Tier).
We bounced the application services after doing the above changes and running AutoConfig.
We checked access_log and the only information that we can find there is
    [29/Nov/2011:15:15:05 -0600] "GET /OA_HTML/portlets/WSRPBaseService?WSDL HTTP/1.1" 403 242 0 "-" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; Trident/4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; SLCC2; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E)"

  • Portal Integration with Product Orenge ?

    Hello !
We Have a cust. who is interested in using iDS and
iAS. They are trying to build up some Authoring-
    Software.
For intelligent search in there data content they are
using a third party product called "Orenge".
I suggested to use Oracle Text option, which is available
with the RDBMS, but cust. insists to use his product.
    (Don't ask me why )
With this tool they are able to connect to the database
and do searches. To make this web-enabled, they are building
up a JSP to use this 3rd party product.
    How to integrate this ?
    1) Simply get the url of the servlet and display it in
    Portal.
    2) Include this product as an external application.
But these are only very basic integration methods.
Has anyone out there heard about this product called
    "Orenge" ?
Does anyone know if there are plans for
a further integration into Portal, for example as
    a portlet ?
This would bring a great selling opportunity for us with a
    great institute in Germany.
    Hearing for your answers.
    Cheers

  • Problem creating user in RDBMS realm Using com.bea.wlpi.rdbmsrealm.RDBMSRealm

    Hi,
I am currently using WLI 2.0 SP2 installation. Here is a very unusual thing I
noticed. Can somebody tell me what is going on ???
1 : I have set up the security realm as indicated in the config.xml file. As far
as I understand, the caching realm entry has attribute pointing to the wlpiRDBMSRealm,
which is a RDBMS implementation from the WLI 2.0 SP2 distribution.
2: I start the server, open the WLS console, and create a new user through the
console. I get no error message and it seems to work fine. ( I also click on the
save it to database link, and it returns with msg that cache is refreshed ).
3: I see an entry in the fileRealm.properties file, but no record is inserted
in the WLSUSER table in the database.
Since the RDBMS realm (from WLI distribution) is defined as basic
realm implementation, should it not insert entry into the database, instead of
    the file realm.
Is this a general problem ( any RDBMS realm ) or is it specific to the WLI ?
Is there anything that I have not configured here that is causing this behavior
Is it just refreshing the cache instead of inserting record in DB ?
Why should it insert entry into fileRealm.properties ?
    Thanks,
    Girish

from the RDBMS implementation class (from WLI 2.0 SP2 distribution).
Here is the msg that I get while WLS server boots (the WLS server boots ok, but
    WLPI does not initialize) ....
Unable to initialize WebLogic Process Integrator:
SQL Exception: ResultSet not open, operation 'next' not permitted. Verify that
    autocommit is OFF.

    Hi,
I am currently using WLI 2.0 SP2 installation. Here is a very unusual
    thing I
noticed. Can somebody tell me what is going on ???
1 : I have set up the security realm as indicated in the config.xml file.
    As far
as I understand, the caching realm entry has attribute pointing to the
    wlpiRDBMSRealm,
which is a RDBMS implementation from the WLI 2.0 SP2 distribution.
2: I start the server, open the WLS console, and create a new user through
    the
console. I get no error message and it seems to work fine. ( I also click
    on the
save it to database link, and it returns with msg that cache is refreshed
3: I see an entry in the fileRealm.properties file, but no record is
    inserted
in the WLSUSER table in the database.
Since the RDBMS realm (from WLI distribution) is defined as basic
realm implementation, should it not insert entry into the database, instead
    of
    the file realm.
Is this a general problem ( any RDBMS realm ) or is it specific to the
    WLI ?
Is there anything that I have not configured here that is causing this
    behavior
Is it just refreshing the cache instead of inserting record in DB ?
Why should it insert entry into fileRealm.properties ?
    Thanks,
    Girish

Tomcat does not support EJB deployment as it is a mere servlet engine. But it can be integrated with with JBoss, an app server which is freely available.

  • How to create an RDBMS event generator using wlst on weblogic 10.3

how to create an RDBMS event generator using wlst on weblogic 10.3, i got a code fragment needing class "com.bea.wli.management.configuration.RDBMSEventGenChannelConfiguration"
but i can' t find this class in classpath on weblogic 10.3, pls help me, thanks. code sample is better.

    Hi,
RDBMS Event Generator Channel Rule Definition
When you are creating channel rule definitions in the WebLogic Integration Administration Console, it is recommended that you do not use the Back button if you want to resubmit the details on a page.
You should always use the navigation links provided and create a new channel rule definition.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13214_01/wli/docs85/deploy/cluster.html
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13214_01/wli/docs81/relnotes/relnotesLimit.html
    http://otndnld.oracle.co.jp/document/products/owli/docs10gr3/pdf/deploy.pdf
This problem has been seen in the past when defining the channel rule for an RDBMS Event Generator if schema name was specified with the incorrect case (i.e. lowercase when it should have been uppercase or vice versa). To that end, it is suggested to change the case of the schema when creating the channel rule

  • Define a Standalone Download Integrator with an Additional Where clause - SQL error

    Hi,
I am trying to create a standalone integrator with an Additional Where clause. Followed the steps mentioned in the metalink note 360105.1. When I run the integrator, I get the following error message.
Please resolve the following error to continue.
SQL error: ORA-00936: missing expression occurred
processing stored SQL for Content 20007:GENERAL_441_CNT.
When I look at the log file, here is what I can see:
    10/22/14 10:50 AM AJPRequestHandler-HTTPThreadGroup-15 TRACE          BneHrSQLControl - SQL:SELECT  FROM PER_PEOPLE_V where last_name=$PARAM$.last_name
10/22/14 10:50 AM AJPRequestHandler-HTTPThreadGroup-15 TRACE          validateSQLStatement value of sqlStatement is: SELECT  FROM PER_PEOPLE_V where last_name=:RSQLP1
    10/22/14 10:50 AM AJPRequestHandler-HTTPThreadGroup-15 DETAIL         BneHrSQLControl.validateSQLStatement() paramName: last_name
    10/22/14 10:50 AM AJPRequestHandler-HTTPThreadGroup-15 DETAIL         BneHrSQLControl.validateSQLStatement() error in SQL: java.sql.SQLSyntaxErrorException: ORA-00936: missing expression
So, clearly, the SQL statement that is getting built internally is wrong. Ideally, I would expect the statement to be something like this:
    SELECT *  FROM PER_PEOPLE_V where last_name=$PARAM$.last_name.
    RDBMS : 11.2.0.3.0
    Oracle Applications : 12.1.3
Any pointers towards the resolution of the issue would be of great help.
    Thanks in Advance!
    Lalitha.

  • RDBMS-requirements for usage of  XI

    Hello!
Could some one help me by RDBMS-requirements for XI?
    a) for XI is either Oracle 10g or Microsoft SQL 2005 required (Yes/No)
    b) SQL, JDBC, and ODBC drivers available for Oracle 10g and/or MS SQL Server 2005 (Yes/No)
    c) use DBMS enforced referential integrity or program enforced referential integrity of data
    d) standard pre-defined SQL queries and related calculations provided for use with industry standard reporting tools (Yes/No)
    e) database monitoring tools be used to manage impending maintenance needs and potential problems and performance impacts (i.e., tool will monitor and detect prior to real problem occurring) (Yes/No)
    Thank you!
    Regards

    Hi Peter ,
    1. Its up to you weather you prefere oracle or SQL server(available in both) . The last XI I installed at client site with SP 16 was using Oracle 9.0 not 10.0.the required RDBMS is always bundled with netweaver(XI) suite so you do not need to bother about it and its version.
    2. For JDBC connectivity (JDBC Adapter) you need to add driver for respective dababase to XI server. they are not shiped from SAP. you need to download them from vendors ie. Microsoft or Oracle website.( free download).
    3. for database integrity, it is upto the driver what it support what no. For JDBC adapter features and limmitation read SAP note.
    4. for point (d) and (e) I can just say that you can use stanadard SQL , can call procedures, use DML statements  and trasaction.Normally XI access data from RDBMS using interface tables.
    Hope this will help..
    Thanx & Regards

  • Explanation - Why are IAS 9i and an RDBMS both needed ?

Why are IAS 9i and an RDBMS both needed ? After all, IAS 8I/9I does contain a "database" in it -- but Oracle calls it a "data cache" !!
    Here's why ...
The IAS 8I/9I "data cache" is intended to be a "performance enhancment" mechanism to avoid network round trips to the back end rdbms (called the 'origin' database in IAS terminology) for "rarely changing" data or application code accessed/used in the IAS 8I/9I mid-tier.
The IAS "data cache" was initially extracted from rdbms 8.1.6 to use in IAS 8i (aka IAS 1.0.0 or 1.0.1) and now rdbms 8.1.7 to use in IAS 9i (formerly referred to as IAS 1.0.2).
This was because the complete architecture and functionality needed to provide the IAS 9i's "performance enhancing read only" cache functionality already exists in the oracle 8i rdbms.
(talk about o-o wanting to have high reusability !!)
How about a practical application of why would you do this ??
Think of the web site activity of a major online order system, for example, a ".com" that sells books. We can all think of the famous ones who would be ideal users of this type of design.
Most of the transaction activity in an online order system is customers "browsing" the product catalog, looking at the
descriptions of the books they might consider to buy. When a customer identifies a desired book, the customer can place an order.
This typical customer behavior looks at the description for each book which is "rarely changing" information that is normally accessed in a "read only" mode.
To improve performance for this online order system, the "rarely changing" information can be stored (or "cached") on the mid-tier in IAS 8i/9i's "data cache".
How do this improve performance ??
With the information available in the mid-tier "data cache", network roundtrips by IAS 8i/9I applications to the 'origin' rdbms are avoided, reducing the workload on the network and the 'origin' rdbms.
Why do i still need a back-end or 'origin' rdbms along with ias 9i ?
You still need the 'origin" database as the "master repository" for your books, their inventory system, and orders placed with your business.
You also have the other necessary business systems they may or may not take advantage of the IAS design -- like shipping, payroll, Human Resources, etc.
What happens if the data changes ?
I kept repeating "read only" -- so - the next question is what do you do with "new or changing" data - like placing an order or updating the inventory ?
Since the "master copy" of the information is retained on the origin rdbms, then all changes will occur there.
When a new book is added or an existing book's information is updated or a book is dropped from the inventory, these changes are applied to the origin database.
This information is then "refreshed" on the IAS 8I/9I "data cache" using the "management policies" available within IAS 8I/9I.
These policies controls how and when to "refresh" the IAS 8I/9I data cache.

    In the following document:
    1) "Oracle9i Application Server Technical White Paper" located at :
    http://technet.oracle.com/products/ias/pdf/9ias_102.pdf
    don -- right
At the bottom of page 16 and the top of page 17 is the following....
'The Java engine inside Oracle9i AS is the Oracle JVM.'....
don -- right --- new name is Enterprise Java Engine (EJE)
'The Oracle JVM is integrated in Oracle9i AS, giving it the same advantages and benefits available to the Oracle Database ...'. '
don -- almost right -- you left the key phrase off of it ...
it is completed as follows : (CAPS - are mine for emphasis)
'The Oracle JVM is integrated in Oracle9i AS, giving it the same advantages and benefits available to the Oracle Database FOR EXECUTING JAVA BASED APPLICATIONS ON THE SERVER'. '
    STEVE --
that's why i made the comment in the previous post which i've copied below :
I don't think of it as a "database" even though some literature might refer to it as one in IAS 9i standard edition !!
The term "database" has a lot of extra functions with it that are not in IAS 8i/9i!!
for example, most RDBMS's have :
    1) updateable tables, etc.
    2) backup and recovery of data requirements
    3) etc.
That's what makes the EJE in IAS different from an RDBMS -- the extra rdbms functrions are not needed...
That's why I think of it as a "Java Code Container" that holds the Oracle Enterprise Java Engine(EJE) in it. I was stuck on this also - now i can mentally exclude all of that extra functionality by calling it a "java code container" and not thinking of it as a "database".
Since Oracle JVM is the common Java environment for both the Oracle database and Oracle9i AS,...'.
The above gave me the impression that 9i AS has a JVM independent of a database.
don -- 9i AS has a JVM independent of a database -- they are the same item -- a "stripped down" database or as i call it a "Java Code Container" that holds the Oracle Enterprise Java Engine(EJE) -- formerly called the oracle 8i jvm -- in it.
i think the term "database" in the literature is being used to emphasize where it came from (stable oracle 8i -- as opposed to totally new technology)
    but
i personally think the term "database" implies to many people, it is a "fully functional rdbms" ... so they assume they don't need a back end -- or in ias terms -- an 'origin' rdbms.
However -- i think this is where the confusion is ..
as people understand the differences between ias and rdbms, they soon realize they must have an rdbms.
However, the administrative instructions (that deal with setting up OSE) seem to point that the JVM is in a database.
don -- right -- it is a "stripped down" database or a a "Java Code Container" as i call it.
you still need to deploy the java code (servlets, jsp's, ejb's, corba, and java stored procs) to it.
The command line functions that you use to do that with the 8.1.7 rdbms -- still apply.
    Commands like :
loadjava, deployejb, dropjava, sess_sh, publishjsp, publishservlet, etc.
    Note :
Obviously ias 8i "EJE" or ORACLE 8i JVM (the old name), is based upon the rdbms 816 functions (no OSE in it), so you can't deploy servlets and jsp's to the ias 8i EJE just like you can't to the 816 rdbms.
I do find this subject (where is the JVM located) very confusing.
don - right -- but you are picking it up -- hang in there !!
    Steve you asked --
Don - is the EJE (OSE/OJVM) implemented through a database?
'The Java engine inside Oracle9i AS is the Oracle JVM.'....
    don - right
keep in mind from a java perspective -- the EJE is a "Stripped down" database that acts like a java code container that you connect to -- just like in 817 --- so you can deploy your code to it.
it's also a jvm -- and you execute your deployed java code in it -- just like in 817.
i hope this helps and i didn't confuse this topic further for you ...
