Re-directing folders?

Running Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on  27 inch iMac with SSD (256MB) and HDD (1TB).
Hi,
When I moved across to my new iMac last year the migration process initially tried to put all of my files in the newly created user profile on the SSD. I found some advice that suggested I could moved the files to the more spacious HDD and redirect the home folder. I followed that advice and everything has worked okay until recently when I experienced keychain and permission problems.
The Apple advice suggested that my library folders should be located on the SSD and this was why I was having the permissions issues. In the end I created myself a new user profile that doesn't crash the iMac. The new profile is based on the SSD.
I still have the problem of accessing my old data on the HDD and would like to re-direct the pictures, movies, documents and downloads folders etc to the old folders on the HDD. So far I have added my new user profile to the list of users that have read/write access, but I cannot find a way of performing the redirect. The library files are still on the SSD as I was advised. Can anyone help?

  • Folders permissions are changing. Cannot find the cause.

I am running multiple Windows server 2008 R2. And the clients are running either Windows XP SP3 or Windows 7 SP1.
I have a folder to hold all of the users home folders. D:\Users\Staff In this folder are all of the users folders. Each server has a similar folder structure.
During the day folder User1 will change its permissions and lock out the administrators. After fixing the issue, it will happen again. It may be on User1 again or it may be different users. And it can be multiple users. The users do not have the ability
    to change permissions.
On the local server I turned on "Audit object access". When the policies refresh, the settings are turned off. So I have been unsuccessful in finding the cause. I have checked the Group Policies and nothing is turning off Audit object access. It
seems as if the change in the permissions on the folders happens at the same time as Audit object access gets cleared.
If I create a GPO with Audit object access turned on, the settings are locked and turned off but the winning GPO is the GPO turned on.
We started filtering out the desktop.ini file because it was making the folders all look like My Documents.
We started noticing this issue over the summer. I do not know how long it has been happening.
I have been trying to catch the offending process with Audit object access, AccessEnum, EventViewer, and ProcMon.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
I think we may not able to change that option directly once it is applied the change you make on Folder Redirection policy may not be refreshed to clients even it displayed as changed on server side.
Thus if issue still exists, test to create a new policy to replace the old one. You can create a new policy in a new OU and move users into the new OU, or create a new policy which "direct folders to new location" and folder redirection folders
will be moved to a new place once a user logged on.

  • Apple Templates and shapes, etc. are not showing up for me to select??

i did a search and came up empty-
i am using FCS, and have done all the updates, including the Proapps one, in the last 6mo.s, and have been religious about repairing permissions.
all the files for the Apple templates, shapes, buttons, etc. are in the proper folder(s), but somehow they are no longer showing up on my workspace to the right of dvd studio pro. to my knowledge, nothing has been moved or changed since i did the original install 6 mo.s back.
is there a way to do a "scan", or import them ALL back in (instead of one by one)?

thanx 4 your response-- i did what you posted, and it seemed as though it would do the trick, but when i did it, nothing happened. no loading, or anything. i even tried using the direct folders, but "apply" nor "reset" caused anything to happen. i even tried closing the app. and booting back up, but no chance.
i did, however, go to the top menu items and found a "import template" option. i did it and selected all the templates in the folder. same thing for "shapes". in the palette, they aren't in the "apple" section, but show up in the "custom".
i guess this will do, yet, i can't seem to be able to access the "patches" or the "transitions", by way of any of these methods.

  • Reader will not open

We have re-directed folders in our network and when we upgraded to Reader 9.3.3 I have had 3 people now recieving this error:
Application popup: Acrobat Instance Window: AcroRd32.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x012e43eb" referenced memory at "0x01942dc4". The memory could not be "written".
I have tried deleting regestry keys and the re-directed adobe folder but the folder never gets recreated. Does anyone know why I am recieving this error?
We are running Windows XP sp3 and Reader 9.3.3

Try repairing reader from Add/Remove Programs.

  • What is the easiest way to ensure correct permissions on multiple servers for folder targets (2008r2) DFS-R

I have 5 sites to manage and need to create replicated folders using a domain DFS on at least one server on each site. (2008R2)
My aim is to work out the most efficient (i.e. least work) of creating shares on each server and ensuring that permissions are consistent.
At the start there will notionally be one "master" share and all the other "satellite" servers will connect bi-directionally with this central one.
So if I ensure that when the folders are created on the satellite servers that administrators and system have NTFS full control, will those folders inherit the permissions from the source folder, or will I need to set permissions on each server?
    regards
    roga

After initial replication finished, there is no Primary server anymore
Hi Shaon, and thanks for your reply
I am aware that when you create the first 2 members of a group DFS-R asks you to select a master.
The situation I am now in is that 4 of 6 machines have finished replication and I have another 2 to add.
So when I add a new member to the group, will the group NTFS perms be applied to the new member target, or do I have to set the NTFS perms on the new target prior to replication?
If permission granting is automatic, are there any minimum perms on the new folder target, e.g. that the system has full control
Part of the reason why I am asking is this: sometime we put re-directed folders into DFS and these have complex NTFS permissions i.e. "domain user" can create folders but not files and "creator owner" has full access to sub files and
folders. It is very easy in this situation to get some of the perms wrong on one of the member targets.

  • Using TRUNCATE to free space used by CLOB/BLOB

    Hi ,
Can we free the complete space used by a CLOB or BLOB by issuing a TRUNCATE command on the table containg these large objects?

Sorry about my loose terminology - yes I did mean a sparse bundle. Yes if the backup is created on a local disk, it uses ordinary folders. If it is first created over a network, then it creates a sparse bundle. having created the sparse bundle, you can then connect the disk directly for speeding up the initial backup or a major restore, but also connect remotely for routine incremental backups or minor restores.
It sounds like the type of sparse bundle created may depend on circumstances. In my case I am backing up from a laptop onto a partition on my desktop machine running Leopard 10.5.2 and when I grew the partition, although the Time Machine preference pane saw the extra space, when it came to a backup I got an error message saying there was not enough space and reporting the original size. Deleting and starting over again fixed this.
It is possible that in other circumstances a disk attached to a Time Capsule or elsewhere might get a sparse bundle with different parameters.
Incidentally, I tried copying my old backup sparse bundle onto another drive, deleting it and letting Time Machine create a new sparse bundle on my grown partition and copying the contents from the old one into the new one. Time Machine refused to work with it, so I lost my old backups.
What we need is a Time Machine Utility to manipulate these files, copy them, move backups from direct folders to sparse bundles etc. Ideally Apple would produce this, but I would be willing to pay a shareware fee for that.

A bit of an update with some more information for anyone who comes across this thread.
Connecting to my server (Windows Server 2012) from my Mavericks MacBook Air using smb://servername/sharename results in symbolic links on the share listing as empty. Direct folders within the share list correctly.
    -- filestore
           |- directory1 (symbolic link)
           |- direcory 2 (directory)
           |- directory3 (symbolic link)
           |- direcory 4 (directory)
In this structue smb://servername/filestore/directory1 and smb://servername/filestore/directory3 will list as empty (when they are not) and smb://servername/filestore/directory2 and smb://servername/filestore/directory4 will list correctly, as they are true folders below filestore and not symbolic links.
    Workaround
I've found a workaround which lets me still access the server correctly, but also suggests that the problem lies almost certainly with the implementation of SMB2 in Mavericks.
By connecting to the server via cifs://servername/filestore then everything works correctly, with symbolic links being honoured. Using smb://servername/filestore from the same client to the same server exhibits the faulty empty directory behaviour.
At least I'm operational for the time being, but hardly the best.

  • How to limit space used by Time Machine

Many folks in these lists have asked if they can stop Time Machine using all the space on a partition, so they can put other data there too. I grew a partition to make more space and found Time Machine would not use it. This is because it initially creates a Sparse Image with a size set to what is available at the time. Even though the Sparse Image does not occupy all that space until needed, it will not grow past that maximum. In theory it should be possible to fiddle with hdiutil [http://developer.apple.com/DOCUMENTATION/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/man1/hdiuti l.1.html], but that is risky since it is not clear how finiky Time Machine is over this. It does seem to 'fail safe' - that is if anything has been tampered with, it is inclined to refuse to proceed. So try the following:
    1) Create a filler file on your volume to occupy the space you do not want Time Machine to use. A (non-Sparse) disk image will do nicely. Check that only the desired Time Machine space is showing as free.
    2) Connect to the volume from the machine you wish to back up via a network connection and start making a back up. Time Machine will create its sparse image, hopefully with a maximum size of the space that was available.
    3) For speed, if you can connect directly to the volume, stop the backup and connect directly via USB/Firewire and complete the initial backup faster that way. (You need to select the backup disk again.)
    4) Delete the filler to release the space you want to use for other things.
I haven't followed this exactly myself, but I am pretty sure it will work.

Sorry about my loose terminology - yes I did mean a sparse bundle. Yes if the backup is created on a local disk, it uses ordinary folders. • Use Native Windows Dialogs in Firefox 10

I like to set Firefox 10 to use the original Native Windows Dialogs when Open, Save, Save as, etc. are called.
I use Direct Folders to quickly navigate to any folder I need, this has been working fine until now, but not with this new version.
I need to know what to set in "about:config" to use the old Windows Dialog boxes

    Hi,
Firefox uses the Windows native dialog boxes by default. You can try to check this in [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode Safe Mode].
    [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions Problematic Extensions]
    [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting%20extensions%20and%20themes Troubleshooting Extensions and Themes]
    [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons Uninstalling Add-ons]
    [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Uninstalling_toolbars Uninstalling Toolbars]
Safe mode disables the installed '''Extensions''', and themes ('''Appearance''') in '''Tools''' ('''Alt''' + '''T''') > '''Add-ons'''. Hardware acceleration is also temporarily disabled - the manual setting is '''Tools''' > '''Options''' > '''Advanced''' > '''General''' > '''Use hardware acceleration when available'''. [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window%20-%20Advanced%20panel?as=u Options > Advanced]. All these settings/add-ons can also be individually or collectively disabled/enabled/changed in Firefox normal mode to check if an extension, theme or hardware acceleration is causing issues.
    [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Options%20window Options]
If the problem persists, you may have to change the settings in Direct Folders or any other Windows enhancement/theme software.

  • How do I configure roaming profiles to not apply to Domain Admins?

    Hi,
I have a setup (Windows 2012 R2 on all servers) where roaming profiles and re-directed folders are applied through GPO to our RDS servers.
We decied to change this so only users, and not Domain Admins will have these settings applied.
Re-directed folders is a user setting, so that was changed easily, but the roaming profiles is applied to computer object.
So my question is; how do I configure roaming profiles only for some users (or a security group) and not for Domain Admins?

    Hi Dane,

Sorry, this is not acheivable, for computer part policy settings apply to computer accounts, regardless of which user logs onto the computers.

  • How can I import bookmark HTML records directly into pre-defined (but empty) Folders?

Firefox is my default browser. I am in the process of replacing an old computer with a new one. I've converted into HTML files the Bookmark content of all of the Folders appearing within the Bookmarks section of Firefox on my old computer. I then uploaded this into the cloud, and downloaded it to my new computer. I've loaded Firefox afresh on the new computer. Now . . .
Ideally, I would like to be able to import these saved/HTML bookmarks (now on my new computer) directly into the new Firefox, keeping the Folder structure maintained in saving them from the old computer; less ideally, but still acceptable, would be to simply re-create as empty Folders each Folder from the old computer's Firefox setup and then do a 'Select All' copy/paste from each of these Folders as saved in my downloaded HTML bookmarks into these initially empty Folders created in the new computer's Firefox Bookmarks section. Is either of these currently possible? In short, this is a quite distinct scenario from importing bookmarks from other browsers on the same computer.
I have tried, but it seems that neither of these functions is currently viable. As common as replacing one computer with another is, I find this a pretty significant oversight which will require a very time consuming conversion process if such functions are not currently available; i.e., I'll have to open each saved HTML Folder and manually activate each individual html bookmark, go to that website, and individually re-bookmark each of these one by one within the Bookmarks section of Firefox on my new computer as if I were bookmarking this site for the very first time. With hundreds and hundreds of bookmarks segregated into about 30 Folders, I think you can see what a productivity drain this will be.
While there appear to be some quite interesting and potentially useful FireFox Addons - e.g., Categorize - none of these seems to address/resolve this problem. Can you advise? Thank you.

To start out with, Firefox hasn't used the HTML format for storing bookmarks for a few years now; you can still import and export bookmarks in HTML format, as you can with just about any other browser out there as an interchange format. Firefox 3.0+ versions use an SQLite database for storing bookmarks and browsing history in the place.sqlite file. Firefox 3.0+ versions do automatic backups of your bookmarks in the JSON format; that file includes "Tags" data but not the web site Favicon data. Restoring a backup from an old PC to the new PC is how Mozilla handles replacing an old computer - or you can "backup" the entire old Profile and transfer that data to the new PC manually. A user could also use Firefox Sync to "sync" their personal data onto the new PC. IMO, you're over-thinking this using dated information (talking about HTML files) without knowing about what options you currently have with Firefox and Mozilla.
Is that a genuine Netscape-1 bookmarks.html file? ''Look at the first line of code in that HTML file to see.'' <br />
Or is it a standard HTML file?
If you have a genuine bookmarks.html file, you can '''Import''' that file thru Organize Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Import HTML... > From an HTML file.
Doing it that way you will be appending the bookmarks & folders that are in the '''Bookmarks Menu''' folder right now. The ordering of the folders and bookmarks in the "imported" file is identical, the "imported" data is added below the existing data. That said, the '''''Bookmarks Toolbar''''' folder and the '''''Unsorted Bookmarks''''' folder from the "imported" data will be in the Bookmarks Menu folder at the bottom; you'll have to move the bookmarks that are in that folder to their respective folders, above and below the Bookmarks Menu folder.

I don't think that a software update from Apple will solve the issues that you are having. You have a rogue installation. After you posted I have just done the following:
Disk Utility can verify  my partitioned Volume (including my boot disk) AND REPAIR the non-boot disks on the same Volume without a glitch. It repairs the non-boot disks containing data smoothly.
I have used Mail to send some mails from some Yahoo and Hotmail accounts to my Thunderbird client containing GMail accounts - absolutely normal.
I have iLife '09 but my iMovie '09 and iPhoto '09 open in a jiffy and I see no issues here. I have 6GB RAM (Maximum) on an early 2008 Macbook Pro with a 750GB hard drive partitioned with 120GB reserved for the Boot Drive.
I am sorry that I cannot help further but I am sure there must be a way to reinstall the software without having to revert to restoring your ML backup. I have two clones and if you have such I would attempt to do that through that rather than through Time Machine - that is of course if you have a cloned drive.
    Good luck!

  • How to copy HDD (MP3)Folders directly into specific iTunes Folders ?

I want to import specific music folders from my HDD into specified iTunes folder but I only can import the content of specified folders into the iTunes music library, then I have to manually copy them into the specified iTunesFolders or Playlists.
Any way to import folder from my HDD directly into iTunes Folders/Playlists ????

    Hello Paul, welcome to discussions.
When the folders are copied to itunes and ipod, these folders are ignored, creating a big pile of mp3-files.
Sounds to me like your MP3 files are missing all of the data in the ID3 tags. If this is the case, then I can understand how your collection is not properly organized in iTunes.
If you are in fact missing the ID3 info... then any MP3 player is going to do the same thing to your collection. Just about every piece of audio software and every MP3 player that I know of relies on the ID3 tags to organize music.
I doubt any of them are going to rely on your folder structure and file names for organization.

  • HT2518 Can I drop pictures in predefined folders on PC directly into the iPhoto library, or should I?

I just purchased this iMac and would like to manually transfer large predefined folders of various things, (pictures, other data) from my PC to my Mac. In the case of pictures, I have them sorted by year, month, and so forth. Can I drop them directly into the iPhoto library and will iPhoto understand any of the folder names or what will it do with them?

You may indeed drop a folder containing pictures to the left side of iPhoto, and it will keep the original organization, as attached.
But, if you have them already organized in files within folders, perhaps it is not recommented to put them all there, but you know better what you want to do with them.
In attache screenshot, folder marked by an arrow was dropped there from another location, and iPhoto created a copy of it.
