Re-formating ipod from Mac to PC with out losing songs

I used to have a mac and used it to load songs onto my ipod, however, that computer is no longer around and I now have a PC. Is there a way I can save the songs and photos I have on my ipod now, before I reformat it for PC?

in older ipods the music files are hidden in fact and do not require third party software to copy tho the file names are 4 letter ones such as EDRG.mp3 but the track info is still there but greyed out and u can use that to re-edit them. this i posted and may help you in gaining all the pics and music and videos.

i have always been able to regain my music from my ipod like this but i do recommend a separate partition or external harddrive as backup always for these things in case you need to re-install your computer or laptop or get a new one. that way you should always have the files though external will also be better in case your main harddrive with the separate partition crashes completely. there are companies out there that could possibly recover lost files even from a crashed harddrive but they can be expensive.
try the link coz maybe the files can still be read as the ipod may use coding compatible to both mac and pc as it is a separate device. if not then go third party. and the files do get named with 4 random letters for the ipod

  • How do I save tracks in order to format ipod from Mac to windows?

I have been given an ipod that was originally used on a Mac but i have Windows. Is there any way I can save the tracks before formatting it ?
When i plug in the ipod to my computer it only gives me the option of formatting it.
There are some 11 g's of music and i can't bear to lose it.
If backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?

"if backed up the music on a Mac could I then re-load the tracks from it once the ipod has been formatted for Windows?"
Yes you could, Macs can read Windows formatted iPods. If you only have the songs on the iPod, and have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. The procedure is a bit involved but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Try a software e.g. Xplay2, which allow your PC to read your Mac formatted iPod. However, the following is my suggestion:-
    1. Make sure all your songs are still with your Mac.
    2. Follow Stealth01's suggestion, do a Restore on a PC
    3. Your PC formatted iPod will now be able to be read by both PC and Mac
    4. Do an update of your iPod with your Mac
    5. Once it has been completed, use a 3rd party software e.g. YamiPod

    Hello.
I need to format a 3rd Gen iPod from Mac to windows for my Father in Law.
So please can anyone tell what the process is?
    Many thanks,

The iPod is formatted for both PC and Mac, I used to use mine with a PC, bought a Mac, plugged it in and it worked with the Mac no problem. • Problem with windows formatted iPod on Mac

I have a 20gb 4th gen iPod formatted for Windows. I just received a Mini Mac as a gift and now I want to use the iPod on it. When I connect the iPod and run iTunes it recognizes it and updates and does everything it's supposed to do, but if I try to click on any of the items in the menu on the left (Library, Playlists, etc.) iTunes quits completely and the iPod is ejected. I've tried restoring but that makes it quit, too. I've also tried completely erasing everything from the iPod manually (even the hidden files and folders) but that doesn't reformat it. Any suggestions?

    Senuti.
It's a program that transfers music from iPod to iTunes on a Mac.
    As is Music Rescue.
Both of these should work with a Windows formatted iPod because Macs can read and write to FAT32 formatted drives.

Use iTunes on the PC to restore the iPod, or install XPlay on the PC without changing the format. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it.

  • Changing an ipod from Mac to PC

Is it possible to reformat a classic ipod from Mac to PC? My mother has rejected my old Powerbook and wants to keep her pc(!) but her ipod is synced to the powerbook.
I would like to a) download everything from the ipod to her pc and b) reformat the ipod to work with her pc. Can it be done? Appreciate any and all advice.
    Thanks

*I would like to a) download everything from the ipod to her pc*
If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats). There are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. XPlay for instance gets good reviews and has the added functionality to let you copy your songs back to iTunes. You can purchase XPlay at this link: XPlay
*and b) reformat the ipod to work with her pc*
Once you have the contents of the iPod saved to the PC you can restore it in iTunes for Windows. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Windows version and put it back to default settings, so if you have songs on your iPod that aren't on iTunes you will lose them if you have no back up. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • How can I uninstall yosemite and reinstall Loin with out losing all my in formation and programs

How can I uninstall Yosemite and reinstall Loin with out losing all my in formation and programsThis had been the worst os system apple has come out, too many errors
    too many to list.
    a few
Losing all mail. and watching them disappear in front of my eyes and could nothing about it
also when accessing cloud the screen just rolls in when accessing mail, like loading and loading and loading for 1 to 2 minuets.
I did not up grade my Mac Book Pro, and is working fine,
Just my iMac, its act kile avid card and it only happens access iCloud mail.
so I want to and need to go back to Loin

You can't unless you have a current backup of your old Lion system because the first thing you must do is erase the drive. It 's possible to use Target Disk Mode between your iMac and the MBP in order to clone the MBP to the iMac. However, that will still erase everything on the iMac's drive.
Or you could see about getting Yosemite to work correctly. If you have IMAP mail, then your mail should be intact.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

  • My computer crashed. So does this mean I can not add any more music to my ipod from a different computer without all the songs being erased? Can I sync my ipod to a new computer if I allow all the songs to be erased?

My computer crashed. So does this mean I can not add any more music to my ipod from a different computer without all the songs being erased? The ipod works fine and now i got a new computer. So it seems like my only options are leaving my ipod in a state where i cant add anymore songs or erasing all my songs and trying to use my ipod from my new computer. Can someone please inform me on how to have my ipod work from a different computer, even if i have to erase my songs. Thanks.

Yes, if you choose the Erase and Sync option (or restore your iPod) you will be allowed to sync your iPod with the new computer.

  • How can I sync my ipod 6g. to a new computer with out losing all the info

My computer is starting to fail so I bought a new one. How do I sync my ipods they are 6 gen to the new computer with out losing all the data that is on the ipod?

Was your iPod previously set up to Manually Manage (where you dragged/dropped the music) or was it set to auto sync (where it started sycning as soon as you plugged it in.)?
If it was set to Manual, you have no worries. Just continue on your way.
If it was set to Auto, you will have to transfer your purchases or redownload them from the iTunes store.
You're either going to have to get the other music back from the websites/CDs you got them from before or find an iPod ripping software program that will do it for you.

  • Downloading songs from a different computer with out reformatting my i pod

Hey there, it's probably a common question. Is there any way to download songs from a different computer with out having to reformat the ipod and lose all my songs i have on there. I've tried it once and it wiped my ipod clean of all my songs. Very annoying. cheers

    Hello noboo79,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
On the computer you have initially the set the iPod up on and for, you can enable the "manually manage music and videos" option from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes. This will allow you to sync contect to the iPod from multiple computers. Otherwise, there is no other way.
Here is more on using your iPod with multiple computers as well as manually managing your iPod's contents.
