Re: Forte Management Queries (OOP)

2. Reusable Objects:object reusability is ideal, however in practice it is rather
difficult to achieve, and unless there is proper infrastructure put
in place, dealing with reusable objects becomes such headache nobody
will care to use them....This problem is common to many of object-oriented development
efforts. From my point of view, the source of this disillusion in OO
approach is in neglecting the first, and the most important phase
of any object-oriented development process, I mean OO Design. To
make your class reusable you need to clearly understand in the first
place how and under what circumstances it will be used. After that
define its responsibilities, i.e. methods and attributes. Then
decide what parts of its behavior will need to be overriden in
subclasses and what attributes can be made private. Try to make
class interface as simple as possible.
Unfortunately, the design process may take a significant amount of
time without any visible 'hard-coded' results, and this is one of
the reasons why it is neglected so often.
Another important issue is the level of project's
'object-orientation' which is implicitly defined by project leaders
and correlates with their own OOP experience and knowledge.
Sometimes they seem to be afraid to implement OOP key features:
polymorphism and class hierarchy at full speed, which finally leads
to the hybrid design, i.e. structural programming implemented with
classes.
This problem exists not only in Forte, but in any OO environment.

1. Remote Installation of Run Time software:have you looked into installing forte runtime (or your application) on a
network drive and having your users run the setup from that drive?
there are also tools like saber or sms that would allow you to remotely
manage your desktop applications. for example, you can programmatically
have saber check your desktop's version of forte and if the master
version, residing somewhere on the net, is more uptodate, reinstall the
latest version on your desktop....
2. Reusable Objects:object reusability is ideal, however in practice it is rather difficult
to achieve, and unless there is proper infrastructure put in place,
dealing with reusable objects becomes such headache nobody will care to
use them.... with that in mind, here are some suggestions which you may
already have considered:
- after through examination of how your organization intends to use
these objects, design them...
- assign someone as a class librarian who will be involved in the whole
life cycle.
- create a repository specific to your reusable classes.
- develop classes & TEST them thoroughly.
- export the project(s) out of your repository and check them into your
favorite cm tool.
- document classes and publish the document to the user community.
- have other projects contact your class librarian to obtain a copy of
the pex file containing your classes.
- make sure your class librarian keeps user community informed as to
what new or revised classes are available.
perhaps you are wondering why we should export classes at project level,
well, if your classes depend on service objects or cursors, the only way
to export their definition is by exporting at project level....

  • Working with Custom SQL Using Descriptor Query Manager Queries

    Hi All,
I am Working on Descriptor Query Manager Queries
Configuring Custom SQL Using Java and Workbench
Using Java I wrote a static method as in the code given below.
    public static void insertEmployee(ClassDescriptor descriptor){
    descriptor.getQueryManager().setInsertSQLString(
    "insert into EMPLOYEE (EMP_ID, EMP_NAME, EMP_JOB, SAL, DEPTNO) values (#EMP_ID, #EMP_NAME, #EMP_JOB, #SAL, #DEPTNO)"
I wrote a insert SQL Query in the custom SQL tab of the Toplink workbench .
Using java and Using Toplink Workbench I had a problem how to call this insert query in the sessionEJBBean .
Can any one suggest me in this regard.
    Thanks in advance
    regards,

What is the problem you are experiencing?
Normally you can just execute the query by calling
    'executeQuery(queryName, domainclass) on the session.

Just out of curiosity: why do you need a custom SQL
to insert something? Can't you use persist()?
    regards,
LonnekeOr even UnitOfWork ? Why go down the route of using custom inserts to insert objects unless you have some business logic that Toplink's UnitOfWork API cannot provide ?

  • Clear unused POV Manager Queries in SmartView MS Word

I am copying and refreshing data points in MS Word which works fine. When deleting or replacing this data points the POV Manager Queries are still remaining.
Example: I copy 4 different data points into MS Word, then delete 2 of them. When I want to change the POV I see all 4 queries allthough the first 2 are not existing any more. In other words the data point might be deleted but the corresponding POV Manager Queries are still there.
Is there a possibility to clear or update them

    Hi
I am not sure whether this feature is availble on the latest release 102. But you can see many powerpoint related smart view issues are fixed on this version. If you can reproduce the same in "Oracle® Hyperion Smart View for Office, Fusion Edition- Release 11.1.2.0.000 Patch Set 1 (PS1): 11.1.2.1.102", open a service ticket to oracle support for further assistance.

  • Dissecting Audit Manager Queries/Logs

When you run an query using Audit Manager, the query returns data in the following columns:
    Item Type
    Item Name
    User
    Server
    Message Type
    Time
    Message
    According to the Help documentation:
Message Type - Displays the type of action performed on the object: for example, Deleted or Modified.
When we run queries in our portal, the Message Type column contains numeric values (such as 1, 4, 8 and 16)
I've looked through the database and documentation to see if there is some lookup table that provides a description of these numeric Message Types but can't find anything. What do these numeric values mean?

It appears that we have figured this out internally. It appears that the numeric codes correspond to one of the six message types you can audit:
    Item Change = 1
    Item Deletion = 16
    Locked Account = 32
    Security Change = 4
    User Login = 8

  • Travel Management Queries

I am in the middle of implementation of Travel Management  and I have need few clarification. I request you please provide your input on the below issue.
    1)     Is it possible to attach scanned copies of receipt as an attachment to each expense type.
    2)     As per the requirement employeeu2019s supervisor as maintained in Org Management should approve the Travel Expense. Is this possible, If possible what is the workflow we should use and what changes should we make to workflow.
    3)     If the client want the approval to be done in 3rd party tool, can that be done.
    REgards,
    Koutilya A.K

    Hi,
    1. It is possible to attach scanned receipts to each expenses. But you need to activate the DMS for the travel expenses.
    2. Travel expense can be approved by line manager based on the Rule 168. Ask your workflow guy use the rule to get the immediate supervisor.
    Hope this helps.

  • Inventory Management Queries

As of BI 3.2, does anyone know which infoprovider provides these queries as they are not part of 0IC_C03, Material Stocks/movement?
    1.     Q0002 – Inventory Days of Supply - Quantity
    2.     Q0003 – Inventory Days of Supply - Value
    3.     Q0004 – Finished Goods Inventory Days of Supply - Quantity
    4.     Q0005- Finished Goods Inventory Days of Supply - Value
    5.     Q0012 – Material Consumption

    Hi Eric,
    you are right !
0IC_01 is obsolete because feeded by the old LIS datasources....so, you have to use the new cube with the new datasources from LBWE...the problem is that your queries still remain (on business content standard level) dependent from the old cube with no copy-query for the new one !!! And, in addition, you have no possibility to copy the queries from the std tool because the cubes are completely different !!!
If you want, you can use the workarounds mentioned in a previous thread on the BW forums (how can I copy query and bla bla bla..).
That's all is in my knowledge (strange situation, my dear..)

  • Credit Management Queries

    Dear All,
    1) In credit management you define a credit control area and specify the credit limit . My question is what is the relevance considering we enter the credit limit for client in master data via FD32.
    2) FD32 is entered both in SD area and also can be entered in FA any specific reason to do so.
    Thanks
    Deepak

    Hello Deepak,
    1. When you create a new Customer code, there is not default Credit LImit assigned to this new Customer. Now as this is a new Customer, you still don't know his Credit worthiness & would like to be cautious before selling goods to him on Credit. So for all the new Customers, you would like to have a default Credit LImit, say Rs. 5,00,000.
In this situation, you can mention default Credit LImit in Credit Control Area (T-Code: OB45). Thus this Amount would be set a default Credit LImit for all the new Customer & subsequently you can increase / decrease the Credit Limit for specific Customer in FD32.
    2. FD32 from SD / FI side depends on your Company Organization. In some companies Credit LImit are Controlled by Sales Dept while in some Company it is controlled by Finance dept. But in most companies Credit Management is a joint effort by Sale & Finance departments. Thus you have FD32 in both SD & Fi areas.
    Hope this clarifies your doubt.
    Thanks,
    Jignesh Mehta

  • Non-cumulative Values not showing in Inventory Management Queries

    Hi:
Has anyone had a problem with the new version and Non-cumulative key figures not showing up in Bex for Inventory Managemet reports? Specifically, they showed and validated back to ECC for our Development and QA boxes but now in our Regression box they are all showing zeros. Our Cumulative values are all showing correctly still within the Regression box. For example, Total Receipts and Total Issues are correctly poplating values but Total Stock is not.
I have checked and validate that the configuration in the Regression box matches or Dev and QA box.

Found the problem.  It had to do with the compression variant in the delta process chain.  The compression was set to 'no marker update'.  Since we only started receiving measureable deltas in or regression box this is where the incorrect setting showed up.  Reinitalized and the deltas are working correctly now.

  • Forte Transaction Management & 2PC

    Forte Transaction Management & 2PC
The main purpose of 2PC in a distributed transaction manager is
to enable recovery from a failure that occurs during the window
of transaction commit processing. The Forte transaction manager was built
with this in mind but only with respect to the "volatile" (or "in memory")
objects that Forte manages. What this implies is that because Forte stores
objects in memory and not persistently on disk, the requirement of recovery
for these objects is significantly reduced (if not eliminated all together).
Forte follows a distributed 2PC model in that tasks and messages carry
along with them transaction identification and, during commit processing,
every distributed participant is polled for its availability to commit
the transaction. Applications saving persistent data to disk during a
distributed Forte transaction need to concern themselves with the potential
for failure during the commit processing window. Forte's prepare phase polls
each site (confirming a communications link with each distributed participant)
but no prepare request goes to the database primarily because (in release 1 and
2 of forte) no database supported a general distributed two-phase commit
(one could take issue with that in the case of Sybase, but rather than debate
this point, suffice it to say that the general direction in the industry for
support of this functionality was through TP monitors -- more on that later).
Once all sites are ready to commit Forte expects that the commit will
complete successfully. If at this moment, for example, a participating
Sybase server terminates (with data not yet committed) while a participating
Oracle server has already committed its unit of work, then the outcome of
the distributed transaction is inconsistent - if no one has yet committed
Forte will still abort the transaction. This "window of inconsistency"
is documented in the Forte TOOL manual.
Mission critical applications that require distributed transactions can
address this window of inconsistency in a number of ways:
    * Utilize a TP monitor such as Encina (see below)
    * Log distributed updates in an auxiliary database table (much like a
distributed transaction monitor's transaction-state log). This approach has
been the traditional banking application solution prior to the commercial
availability of products like Encina, Tuxedo, TopEnd, etc.
This solution is somewhat complex and is usually not generic enough
so as not to have to change code every time a new table or database
site is introduced into the application's data model.
    * Rearrange the data model in order to eliminate the need for distributed
transactions. This is usually only a temporary solution (with smaller
numbers of active clients) and cannot be applied to complex legacy systems.
With the advent of the X/Open distributed transaction architecture (the
XA Interface) more database vendors have found that by complying with the
XA interface they can plug their database-specific implementation of
transaction into a globally managed transaction, with commit and abort
processing being conducted by a central coordinator. Of course, the
overall transaction manager coordinating the global transaction must
itself, persistently record the state of the different distributed
branches participating in the transaction. A significant portion of
the functionality provided by products such as Encina, Tuxedo, TopEnd and
OpenTP1 is to provide exactly this global transaction management.
Rather than extend the Forte distributed transaction manager with the
functionality necessary to manage and recover distributed transactions
that modify data on disk, Forte has chosen to integrate with the emerging
set of commercial transaction monitors and managers. This decision was
built into the original design of the Forte transaction model (using XA and
    early Tuxedo white-papers as guidelines):
    * In Forte release 2 an integration with Encina was delivered.
    * In January 1997 a press release announced an integration of
OpenTP1 with Forte for release 3.
    * The Forte engineering staff is currently investing integration
with other transaction management products as well.
    Neil Goodman,
    Forte Development.

    You don't. ("manage" a transaction)
There is nothing really to "manage".
A transaction is automatically started when you make any changes to data (e.g. fire off a DML statement).
You simply needs to issue a COMMIT or ROLLBACK when needed. A COMMIT at the end of the business transaction and not before (i.e. no committing every n number of rows). A ROLLBACK when hitting an exception or business logic error that requires the uncommitted changes to be undone.
That in a nutshell is it. It is that simple.
Oracle also supports creating savepoints and rolling back only some changes made thus far in the transaction.
The only other thing to keep in mind that a DDL in Oracle issues an implicit commit. Firing off a DDL with cause any exiting uncommitted transaction to be committed.
Transaction "logic/management" should not be made more complex than this.

    Futur e of Forte )
    What an interesting debate....
May I just add some considerations?
    - Successful Project capable to produce effective and maintainable
system. That's in my opinion should be our goal as professional IT
actors. Languages are just means to reach this goal. Therefore I would
like to see IT professional considering all the aspects of software
development, and not only the code and the languages.
    - About distributed features in Java systems... Sure, you can do
in Java a lot of nice things, but, today, how much would it cost to
develop in Java real mission-critical distributed application?. I am
talking here about the IT "headaches" Forté has been capable to solve
during the past 5 years. Should I make examples? What about distributed
events, what about distributed transactions, what about fail-over, what
about load-balancing? Or, to move towards a more comprehensive view of
software development (and maintenance), what about partitioning (or, to
talk J2EE slang, assembly), what about deployment, what about monitoring
and run-time management? Is there, available today, an alternative to
Forté that cover so many aspects of enterprise-class systems? I
apologize, but I do not see one, or at least not yet. It not only a
matter of languages...Nevertheless, I believe tomorrow is another day,
Java will evolve as well as the environments for it (including Forté for
Java), and the all will be mature enough to really support distributed
    application.
    - This leads me to express a wish. I like the way one can turned
down the Singleton issue. However this is a perfect example of the
difference from Forté to Java. On one side you have an abstraction, that
hides complexity. On the other side you are (again) back at the
"plumbing" level. Now I do not know what you think about in my opinion
it is about time we move on from the "prehistorical age", making
abstraction, start to worry more about the business requirements (and
the users' needs). We should stop this sort of religious fight for the
best language (the term "crusade" came to my mind), and using our energy
to push for an easier integration, a effort-less plug-in between
components. There is no perfect solutions, all languages have positive
and negatives points. However all we really need is to learn to use each
technologies at the right time and place, and having all pieces
collaborating between each other. Pretty much like a house, where
several material are used, each of them useful but none of them capable
to replace all the others. Of course, it is clever to use sometimes only
wood, and some other times only concrete. However, most of the time you
need both, and you absolutely want them "collaborating" together to be
able to live in your house. Well, that's what "in primis" we have to ask
for to Forté, and to SUN, in particular: easy integration and
collaboration between TOOL and Java, a seamless cooperation between
    partitions and EJBs.
I look forward to discuss all this at FORUM2000....

incomparabily different types of languages available these days and in so
many flavors, that any kind of division into generations is, at the very
best, extremely subjective. Certainly, TOOL isn't very much like some of
the classic procedural 4GLs, but personally I am very comfortable calling
it an OO4GL in comparison to the more common OO3GLs around, like Java.Agreed.

all of the FJEE tools are written in TOOL?
