RE: (forte-users) Escript - Loading distrib from specifiednode ?

JP,
you can't do it. As says the help file on loaddistrib, :
"The distribution to be loaded is in the FORTE_ROOT/appdist/<envname>
directory hierarchy
on the node running escript."
So, you have to run escript on the server or the node having the distrib.

Hi,
When I do 'listdistrib' in escript, it says 'nothing in local',
which is fine.
How do I focus on 'remotenode' for
'loaddistrib' to be able to find the distribution ?
thanks

• 3 users sharing itunes on 1 imac. How does everyone's library listing refresh when all 3 users are loading music from their own screens?

3 users sharing itunes in shared folder on one imac computer. What can we do to "refresh" our individual library listing to list music loaded by other 2 users? We listen to books in the car via ipods. How can books I have loaded show up on other 2 library listings and vice-versa? Had a couple of instances where 2 of us loaded the same book because we didn't know the other had already loaded it!!!

It sounds like you are using individual libraries (each user has library files in their iTunes folder) but shared media. iTunes doesn't have an active way of scanning a shared media folder for new additions. You will just have to tell each other that something has been added to each person can add the media information to their libraries. The only other ways I know of are to using a single user library (many disadvantages to that too, especially with 3 of you), or to use Home Sharing which also has disadvantages.

Sounds like what we have been experiencing here, on Unix.
According to Forté, upgrading to 3M should resolve it. Unfortunately, we

I believe this is documented as an "internal" Forté bug report.

Hi All,
One of the router partitions on NT server stops responding once in awhile. We can not get to it through escript or econsole and the only
solution we have is to shutdown the ftexec using task manager and start
the partition again. We don't see any error messages in the log except

• RE: (forte-users) Call to the load-balanced SO not throughrouter

We never call an SO from within an SO. Instead we do the following :
MySO is mapped to MySOclass.
MySOclass is a facade which has an attribute for every Policy Manager
related to this SO.
Each Policy manager is instanciated in MySOclass.
Each Policy manager has an attribute called Parent.
Parent is defined by MySOclass to be self.
If two Policy managers need to work together we invoke methods via the
parent attribute :
Example
I have a partition for Enrolments.
It has three Policy Managers within it
a Students Policy Manager (with a Add, Delete, Get methods)
a Courses Policy Manager (with a Add, Delete, Get methods).
an Enrolments Policy Manager (with a Add, Delete, Get methods).
To enable this partition we have defined :
EnrolmentsSO (environment visible, message duration) with the EnrolmentsMgr
class as its related class.
The EnrolmentsMgr class has the following methods and attributes :
Methods :
AddStudent
AddCourse
AddEnrolment
GetStudent
GetCourse
GetEnrolment
DeleteStudent
DeleteCourse
DeleteEnrolment
All of these methods do a one line return statement, simply passing the
method invocation to
the appropriate Policy Manager. For example AddStudent would say
Return theStudentPM.AddStudent(pInStudentParams : pInStudentParams)
: pOutStudentParams
In the Init method for the EnrolmentsMgr we instanciate the following
attributes :
theStudentPM (which is typed to the StudentPM class)
theCoursePM (which is typed to the CoursePM class)
theEnrolmentsPM (which is typed to the EnrolmentsPM class)
Also in the Init method we set an attribute (called parent) on each
PM to the value of Self.
Then when one PM needs to invoke a method on another PM we simply do :
For example in the theEnrolmentPM.GetEnrolment method we need to get
Students and Courses
thus we code :
Parent.GetStudent(pInStudentParams = pInStudentParams) : pOutStudentParams
Parent.GetCourse((pInCourseParams = pOutStudentParams.CourseStuff) :
pOutCourseParams
Build Enrol details based on student / course stuff.
Return EnrolmentParams.
Hope this makes sense.

• Re: (forte-users) Communication Pbs between a NT client& a HP 11 load-b

Hi,
I think you misunderstand the anatomy of an Array object. The size of an
Array containing 63 elements can never be 1638 bytes when each element
contains a 100 byte string.
If you use the sizeof function, you'll only get the combined size of all
attributes of the object. But if an object contains attributes that are
objects themselves (e.g. TextData), then only the size of the pointer to
this object is counted. Not the object itself.
Array and LargeArray offer the same functionality but use different
algorithms. LargeArray is better suited for large lists and Array is better
suited for small lists. Array is faster, but requirs more memory. LargeArray
is slower, but requires less memory.
Array reserves a piece of memory that holds 63 pointers to objects. Within
these 63 positions, you can read and write randomly. When you add a 64th
object, Array locates a new piece of memory that holds 127 pointers. The
first 63 pointers are copied to this new location and the original location
is free for garbage collection. When you add a 128th object, Array locates a
new piece of memory that holds 255 pointers. etc.
Check if you're network communication time is closer to what you expect when
you have 127 elements in your list. And then check if performance drops
again when you have 128 elements.
Also, take into account that Forte is not capable of measuring time in very
small units. 80 ms and 150 ms might really just be 3 ms apart. Also, garbage
collection might kick in at any moment, slowing down performance. If you
have a multi-user OS, it might suddenly start doing maintenance tasks, that
reduce the amount of processor time available for your partition, either the
partition that sends the array, or the partition that receives it.
Sending an object requires the object to be serialised, send and
deserialised. The partition that invoked the Send() method blocks during
this whole process. If deserialising at the other end takes longer, then the
process simply waits longer.

Subject: (forte-users) Communication Pbs between a NT client & a HP
11 load-balanced server : 100ms to transfer 1600 bytes on a 10Mbits link.
Hi,
we have done a very small application to instrument & verify the
communication capabilities of our soft & network :
1. a win NT client that generates an array of object ( nb of object is a
parameter ), and that send it to a server.
2. a HP11 server, that contains a load-balanced SO ( with only one
replicate ). The prototype of the SO entry point, which does nothing, is
as
follows :
void send( input GenericArray of Element );
And Element is a class that contain a DataValue attribute with a 100 bytes
string.
Between the client & server, we have a 10 Mbits link ( it has been
verified
using FTP ). From 1 object sent, to 63 objects, ( size of the array with
63
objects = 1638 bytes ), everything is OK. The elapsed time is 10
milliseconds.
With 64 objects ( size of the array = 1666 bytes ), the elapsed time is
100
milliseconds ( in fact for one iteration, it's 80 msec, for the next one,
150 msec, and then it's 80 msec, etc... ).
All the results with more objects than 63 are awfull.
Has anyone enccountered such a problem ?
Can anyone advise ?
Thanks,

• RE: (forte-users) appdist copy from VMS to NT question...

Well, there are some graphic FTP clients for windows that allow
you to get files from FTP-servers using simple drag and drop.
Most of them even support the option of selecting a directory
and dragging it, with all its subdirectories, to your local drive
with a single mouse action.
The only problem might be with binary vs. text files. The appdist
directory has both filetypes. Getting text files as if they were
binary files may cause problems. Getting binary files as if they
were text certainly will cause problems. So, either get the
whole tree binary and hope for the best. Or get each file indi-
vidually and set the correct bin or asc setting. Or use a tool
that is smart enough to see if a file is binary or text and hope
it doesn't make any mistakes.

That will give you a better idea of what the actual problem is.

I'm getting an error when calling an OLE method which
requires two VARIANT

I've never done this but I think MS-MAPI might be a good solution.
Sure, it's not platform independent, since it will only work on NT,
but it is fax-gateway independent. MAPI is an interface to several
messaging systems (mail, RFC's, fax, etc.) regardless of what
kind of implementation is behind it.

Hi All,
Thank you very much, for all the help you
people extended towards this problem. Its solved, the
problem was i had 2 users, and i started from one user
Nodemanager ( which does not have oracle home path
set) and from the other user id, i started the
launcher, ( which have oracle home set), so the
application, was running locally, but when i
distributed the application, it was not finding oracle
home variable from the other user, from which node
manager was started. So that was the problem. I found
this specifically after setting FORTE_STACK_SIZE,
variable(as suggested by Thomas), it was throwing
error saying that, tns name is not resolved,( kudos to
Thomas :) ).
Once again thank you all.

Hi Babu,
ok, maybe we need to go now a bit more in some
details of
your Forte nodemanager environment on the Sparc
Solaris box.
Q1: Which operating system release ? Solaris
2.51,2.6,7 or 8 ?
Q2: Which Forte Release are you running on all nodes
Q3: Where's the Forte environment manager located ?
Q4: Which Oracle RDBMS release have you installed on
the Sun ?
Q5: Which Oracle client release have you probably
installed
on your PC which is running NT4 I guess ?
(These questions are just the generic Tech Support
approach
to get an idea about your environment).
Q6: You mentioned in your very first message that
during
Forte installation on the Sun, you've left the
path to
Oracle empty....it is mandatory for the Forte
nodemanager
on any box/operating system to find in its
environment
the relevant third party environmental
informations...
For Oracle the Forte nodemanager on Sun
requires a
valid setting for ORACLE_HOME !
Could you send me the complete environment for
the user
who is starting the Forte nodemanager on your
Sun ?
Q7: This is more a necessary suggestion than a
question
but is and when yes, how have you setted
FORTE_STACK_SIZE
on the Sun ?
If it's not there or only set as
FORTE_STACK_SIZE=42000,
then add or reconfigure FORTE_STACK_SIZE to
100000 in the
nodemanager's environment and re-boot the
nodemanager!
Q8: Once more a recommendation than question but can
you
just try to access your Oracle DB instance with
the Forte
sample program DynamicSQL ? You will find this
in
the $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/database
directory
and it will require the Utility plan that you
may import
from $FORTE_ROOT/install/examples/frame .
Try to access your Oracle instance from local
directly
out of your workspace and later on full
distributed
via an own Forte server partition from the
Partition
Workshop. Send to me all errors thrown during
these
procedures on the client and within the remote
server
partition logfile on the Sun.
BTW: When you can access the Oracle RDBMS running in
the
Forte IDE locally, this is an indicator to me that
you have
setted up the Oracle client on your PC and have
configured
Oracle locally correctly (tnsnames.ora) to connect
to your
remote Oracle instance...hence when test running
locally, Forte
will use this locally configured Oracle SQL*Net V2
client
to connect to your remote Oracle RDBMS instance.
That's one
shortcut making it possible for you as the Forte
developer
to debug DB access within the Forte IDE...when
running completly
distributed debugging of remote partitions is not
possible.
Hope this helps ! Best Regards from Germany !

• RE: (forte-users) Forte ADE

In addition to this confusion, I'd like to see some statement by Forte to
indicate
WHEN the next Forte R4 is scheduled (before the Sun era is was said to be
Summer 2000) and
WHAT exactly it will contain (major headings will do).
With the cancellation of the Forte Forum event doubt and uncertainty are
spreading in the
Forte communities that I talk with and no one seems to counterbalance these
doubts with an
official statement. How serious does Sun take TOOL Forte for the coming few
years? Release
of Fusion V2 seems to say "serious". The deafning silence with regard to R4
indicates the
opposite. And the users are divided (as always).

A long, long time ago
In a galaxy far away....
I saw a demonstration of Forte's new Application Development
Environment,
which was more userfriendly than the current one. It also looked more
similar to the interface of the other development tools out
there, with a
tree structure and capabilities to browse through the
inheritance tree, and
not opening a new window for every project, class and method that is
accessed.
This new interface was supposed to be included in Forte 4, which would
combine TOOL and Java and would be released soon.
Since then, we've seen SynerJ and now FJEE, but Forte 4 is still not
released. And when it will be released, it still won't
support TOOL and Java
simultaneously. That's OK. I understand that.
But now I've heard that this improved ADE won't even be
included in Forte 4.
Is this true? And if so, why?

Product Context
+ Forté 4GL is an award-winning, proven product with many unique advantages for
building
enterprise business systems that are distributed, that involve the integration
of existing
business systems as well as new functionality, and that target heterogeneous
runtime
environments.
+ Forté 4GL is recognized by Gartner Group as the most successful Enterprise
Application
Development Tool.
+ Forte 4GL has a substantial customer base that has been successful with the
product and that
looks forward to using Forté 4GL for new applications.
+ The Sun Microsystems, Inc. (SMI) development tools group (formerly Forté
Software, Inc.)
has a strong internal commitment to Forté 4GL. Forté Fusion is written with, and
is currently
being enhanced with Forté 4GL.
+ SMI has retained the Forté field sales organization as an independent unit
whose primary
product offerings are Forté 4GL and Forté Fusion. Continued volume sales of
Forté 4GL
remain the foundation of our business plan.
Product Future
+ We intend to actively enhance and promote Forté 4GL for the indefinite
future.
+ We believe Forté 4GL will flourish in the long term, especially if we are
able to harness the
considerable selling power of the entire SMI field sales organization. To make
the product
more attractive and easier to sell, we will continue to make the product more
modular and
easier to integrate with heterogeneous software environments.
+ We believe that the best opportunity for attracting new customers is to
leverage the ability of
Forté 4GL to easily build powerful shared business services (server components)
that can be
accessed by non-Forté clients (e.g., browsers, Java clients) and that can easily
integrate with
new and existing business systems.
+ We believe that Forté 4GL?s continued success is enhanced by continuing to
issue small and
frequent product releases. Our target is two such releases per year.
+ There is a great potential for our three product lines (Forté 4GL, Forté
Fusion, and Forté for

There was one attribute of a service object you couldn't change in fscript..
I think it was whether the service was replicated at all or not (not the
same as setting rep count to 1!).
As Clint would say, "improvise.."
We exported the project containing the service object and snipped out the
part pertaining to the service object in to a little export file.
Then in an fscript script you can branch/checkout the service object and
import the snipped out export file to change the replicated yes/no flag.
Then do whatever other fscript commands make sense.. We tended to leave the
system baseline with the "true" replication flags and let developers run
this little script (only branching the services) to de-replicate all the
replicated services prior to trying to run from their workspace, etc.
Worked like a charm.

Yes through escript one can achieve changing the properties but onecannot
do it when one is partitioning the app where the router gets createdand
assigned ( which is fscript) and the single threadedness of thepartition
takes effect ( for loadbalancing ) except from the partitioningworkshop
(GUI) itself.

Yes you can do it, but you actually do it in EScript not FScript lookfor
the following types of command "assignappcomp", "unassignappcomp",
"setappcompcompiled", "setrepcount", "findagent", "findsubagent",
"findparent" etc.. So start with your EScript manual.
Happy scripting.

no it is not. One can compiling properties but not replicationproperties
through Fscript.

possible to do this in Fscript? Thanks for your help.

You can set the the number of replicas through fscript BUT the service
object in that partition has to be marked for LOADBALANCE. I didn't find a
fscript command to do that (that was what mnasser was trying to tell you).
But you can get around it by exporting the plan that has the service object
and look for the string LoadBalance = FALSE, then change it to LoadBalance =
TRUE. Import back the plan and you should be fine.

Tric k

"setappcompcompiled", "setPARTrepcount" can be used in fscript during
application build.
I mean PERIOD!
