Re. Moving invisible dot file into limbo

I decided to move out a .vbt5 file from the root folder to the Desktop. (The .vbt5 was a remnant of a Virus Barrier installation -- how it got there is another story, since I never installed anything Intego. Must have been migrated from an inherited Leopard G5. Nothing else Intego is showing anywhere. Just that.)
(I know I could have just moved the .vbt5 to the Trash using the Finder, which is what I eventually did, in fact. But I wanted to preserve it somewhere.)
Here's what happened:
First made all files visible from Terminal. Then
sudo cp -p /.vbt5 ~/Desktop (My intent here was to put a copy on the Desktop, then trash the origiinal at root.)
Result: didn't see a copy on the Desktop. Original is still in the root folder. Remember, all hidden files/folders are visible.
Next
sudo mv /.vbt5 ~/Desktop
Still nada and EasyFind set to show all invisible doesn't see it anywhere, not even in the root folder, so that part worked. It appears to have disappeared into thin air, but it went somewhere.
So, next decide to move it back to the root folder from wherever, even though it never showed up on the Desktop and EF doesn't see it anywhere.
sudo mv ~/Desktop/.vbt5 /
Guess what. With this last command, it shows up back in the root folder. Question: where was it before I moved it back. Why, with hidden files/folders showing, didn't it show up on the Desktop when I moved it there? It was nowhere to be seen, but it obediently went back to the root folder when I moved it back there.
Obviously, something I'm not understanding about the behavior of hidden dot files.

OK, I think I may have this figured out. For security, I'm running standard. So in order to sudo I have to su to my admin user. If I ls -a from my admin, it shows up. If I ls -a from my standard user, it doesn't show. Finder isn't seeing it because it's only seeing my standard user. That was the giveaway. I'm guessing it's getting moved to my admin user Desktop. Don't at the moment feel like logging in over there to confirm this, but I'm pretty certain this is what's happening.
One of a number of small PITA of running standard and having to su to do certain things.

I have thousands of saved .eml files, to move into Outlook 2010. However - when I drag and drop them into the folders on Outlook 2010 - every file has the "date received" as today's date ( in past scenarios where I've done this - it automatically shows the
original email date).
i.e. - every file moved today - shows October 9th, 2011 as the date received - even though the email may have been from August 2009 for example.
Any thoughts on how to move the eml files into Outlook 2010 - with the original receive dates being displayed.

( Essentially - eml files from Windows Mail - need to be converted to .pst in Outlook - then imported into Outlook)

Outlook doesn't use EML files. From Windows Mail, use File, Export. Choose Exchange Server (it exports to Outlook). You
will need to be using 32 bit Outlook to do this.

This morning my Mail was quitting 5 sec. every time time I opened it. I moved com.apple.mail.plist file to trash, started Mail. I got a message that one of my mail boxes(don't remember which one..) will be renamed.
I guess I made a mistake by opening Mail and not Mail.app ?
Closed Mail and moved back .plist file into Library/Pref.
Here I made another mistake by dragging incorrectly, it was placed into some other program. I deleted the other program, and moved the .plist into Library/Prefer.
As the result, my both Mail accounts are gone, and instead I have now MobileMe in my Inbox.
How to restore my accounts now please ???

Help restoring deleted files into iTunes

I was overzelaous in trying to delete about 3000 duplicate songs. I was advised by tech support to move all the titles that were listed in the "show duplicate songs" option in iTunes only to find out that I inadvertently deleted the original copy too! I tried to select them from my trash to drag and drop them into my iTunes library bbut that won't work. I can't re-import from my source files on my external drive because the master files are now in the trash. I thought about moving the trashed files into my external drive and re-importing from there but I assume the restored songs will then be un-grouped with the 'master" artist folders? Anyone have some suggestions?

Drag your files to the desk top - then once they are there you should be able to drop them back into the iTunes window. I tried to drag directly to iTunes from the trash and it would not work. I put the file on the desktop and then moved back into the iTunes window and that did work for me.

I have a heirarchical embedded folder structure under \Documents. Usually, as I drag the file to be moved over the various folders, they will blink twice, then expand/open to reveal contents (in Finder). Now, when the file to be moved is held (hovering) over the destination folder, it will not blink or expand, so there's no place to drop the file. If I release the mouse button, the file image disappears, showing that it is "going back to the place it came from", a.k.a. was not moved. This just started happening. I noticed it after upgrading to Mavericks. Is this a bug or could anything else be causing this?

As of today, Apple Support discovered during a remote support session with me that the same thing happens on their own system. It is isolated to "Column View"; the Icon and List views in Finder behave correctly. Issue is being escalated to engineering, and Apple will call to report status in a couple days. In all likelihood, this is a bug that will need to be addressed in a future update.

Software Update stuck: "Moving files into place"

Software Update stuck. In OS C Lion (10.7.4) I ran Software Update on 25-Jul-2012 (The day when OS X Mountain Lion was released). Software Update had 5 updates, such as Safari 6.0, Remote Desktop, iPhoto (?). Software update gets about 95% done, based on the progress bar. Then it hangs... for hours. I finally had to force-Quit Software Update. Rebooted. Tried again. Same problem. Rebooted and rest the PRAM (command-option-P-R) at start-up. Ran Software Update and had the same problem. Software Update hangs while "Moving files into place." Has anyone else seen this problem and know how to get it to work?

I discovered that if I selected only one update at a time to install, all but one installed (i.e., Remote Desktop, Safari 6, and iWork update). The one update that did not install was the iPhoto update. I had left the install to run overnight (about 7 hours). Console log for /var/log/install.log when installing iPhoto update follows:

Questions re moving files into Events folders

If you move files into an FCP X Events folder, when you open FCP X will it recognize the new files?
Or must FCP X import files into Events folder to recognize and use them?

there are two situations where I am now 1st going to other folders, then importinging into an FCP X Events folder. This costs me drive space (duplicate files) and time (for importing):
(1) Using Clip Wrap to convert AVCHD files from Sony FS100 cameras to Pro Res 422
(2) Round-tripping from FCP X to DaVinci Resolve, then rendering the graded media files.

Moving audio files into Itunes Folder

I have files in my Itunes folder. I also have music files in other folders scattered throughout my computer. All these songs are in my Itunes library.
How can i move all the songs that aren't in my Itunes folder into my Itunes folder? When I consolidate the music tt only lets me copy. Is there a way to just move them without creating double copies?

With the more recent version of iTunes, it automatically stores converted audio files into Artist\Album folder, and re-names the audio track to the the track number plus the title of the track.
It's not the"more recent version of iTunes". It's all versions iof iTunes.
Is there anyway to store the converted audio files in one folder, and keep the same name as the original file name?
No.
If you are RIPping from CD, iTunes will put them into the iTunes music folder by Artist/Album name.
If you are adding songs to iTunes, it does not convert them unless they are WM and then it puts them into Artist/Album folders.
If you want your own Folder/File names, RIP the CD using a different application and put the files into your own folders.
Then iTunes prefs -> Advanced and uncheck *Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library*.
Then add the files to iTunes.

Everything works fine, BUT, the script is generated in dos/windows scripting.
Now I need to run the script in *nix/linux shell, which I still can’t do it (because of my knowledge :p).
And also I don’t know if the script already generated in *nix/linux shell version, how do I chmod +x the script from stored procedure, I can’t use ‘host’ command in my tools

If you're using 9i then UTL_FILE.FRENAME() will execute something like a Unix mv command.
If you want to do a chmod then you'll need to check out how to use a Java Stored Procedure to execute OS calls.

Moving a csv file in iPad and into Contacts, I think

Ok, I've created a csv file from Outlook Express conacts/email address and wanted to import it into Ipad and since it does'nt look like Apple's Mail program on the iPad excepts this like on a Mac, all I can figure out that it must be contacts that Mail uses for addressing emails, so if this is the case then how does one go about importing a csv file into Contacts?

Apple uses the Contacts app on their computers and other devices for all contact functions including email and phone numbers. Your best bet may be to export your contacts to the vCard format. A vCard can easily be added to your iPhone or iCloud Contacts. To add a vCard file to your iPhone email it to your iPhone then open it to be prompted to add it to Contacts.
Another option would be to look into adding iCloud syncing to your computer. Once setup your contacts will automatically sync between iCloud, your computer and iPhone.

Problems Moving Garageband file into iTunes

Hi everyone,
It's been awhile since I've used Garageband. I know in the past, there was a simple way to move a Garageband file into iTunes. Now I'm having all kinds of problems.
What I've done is Click & Drag my GB file into my iPod. The little green plus sign showed up, the computer did it's processing, and I see where the storage space on the iPod decreased, meaning a file was loaded.
But the file does now show up ANYWHERE inside my iPod. Nowhere.
I Clicked & Dragged my GB file into iTunes instead. Again, green plus sign and processing took place, and again nothing shows up menus.
Anybody know what's going on?

The Share menu is in GarageBand along the top where the menu items are. You can export to iTunes or your hard disk or to CD and you can export at full aiff quality or compressed using mp3 or aac.
You have to open the Project you want to export. You can not do it from Finder.
Don't have an answer about the iPod. Maybe try that forum.

Self-created invisible system file not found via Finder's Find command

I need to see what is being created on my hard disk. To achieve that, I create a test file, call it .new in TextEdit, remove the hidden .rtf extension, and place it in one of the folders in /Library/Application Support. Then, I use Finders Find command, and ask to search This Mac, Created date: today, System files are included, File visibility Visible or Invisible, leaving the input field (for file contents or name) blank. The newly created file isn't found. I type its name into the input field, with the same result. I change its name to .new.plist . Same result. Suspecting that "System files" acutally means system files and doesn't include the Library on the top level, I place that same item in /System/Library/PodcastProducer. Same result.
Seriously, this is entirely incomprehensible. The Find command obviously doesn't do what it says it does. Could anyone tell me how to get it to, or name some alternative?

Actually you CAN get ressults for .whatever files and folders. I created a saved search for my home folder with the criterion of "File visibility::Invisible Items" and then "None of the following are true::Name contains" DS_Store, Icon or localized. The result is a list of 65 invisible items including things such as the files /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences.0017f20dca84.plis t (a dot file), /Users/francine/Library/Preferences/com.freeverse.5012 (something with the invisible flag set), the dot folder /Users/francine/.fontconfig, and many others of all of these types. I thought it was interesting that lots of them were inside the ~/Library folder, even though I did NOT specify including system files.
I don't know why the original poster can't get Spotlight, using the the Command-f method, to display dot files. When I was setting my own invisible items search up I did manage to crash the Finder once, so it may be that the query for invisible items is buggy. Here's the Raw Query:
(true) && (((kMDItemFSInvisible = 1) && (!((kMDItemDisplayName = "\DS_Store"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\Icon"cd) || (kMDItemDisplayName = "\localized"cd)))))
If you go to a folder, do Command-f, then change from the default "Kind" to "Raw Query" and paste the above in as the query, you ought to get all the invisible files and folders, except the .DS_Store, Icon and localized files (of which there are likely hundreds of 'em in your home folder).
