Re: NF980-65 /2-GTX 480 SLI and GT 240 as dedicated PhysX problem -|- Split

Hello,
I have a similar issue using 2 - Geforce 9800 GX2 and a Geforce 9600 GSO. The GSO is in PCIe Slot 3 (bottom) and the GX2 are on the top two PCIe slots. Starting the up the computer, the GSO picks up the video display and the GX2 are silent until Windows Vista starts up. Everything works just fine as Windows Vista installs default drivers and after that I install the Nvidia 258.6 drivers 32 bit.
The problem I have with this mainboard is that it performs less than an ASUS M4A78TE with an AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4ghz with the same exact memory and a single Geforce 9800 GX2 installed.
What is worse is that the performance gain of SLI is marginal as opposed to the cost. One Geforce 9800 GX2 or Geforce GTX 295 vs Quad SLI of both cards. The performance is just not worth the cost.
Personally, I believe that unless you are sure you can get significant gains, that is 150% or more, DO NOT BUY! We are buying into "tales" of the industry. They want you to think you will gain something but in reality, you loose~ Every time!
Geforce 9600 GSO (Nvidia Vista drivers 258.96 32bit) ( X4 965 / ASUS M4A78TE)
Geforce 9800 GX2 Quad Sli (Nvidia Vista drivers 258.96 32bit) ( X4 965 / ASUS M4A78TE)
Geforce 9800 GX2 Quad Sli (Nvidia Vista drivers 258.96 32bit) ( X6 1090T / MSI NF980-65)
Geforce GTX 295 Quad Sli (Nvidia Vista drivers 258.96 32bit) ( X6 1090T / MSI NF980-65)
When it comes to Computer digital content creations, I cannot believe that the 9800 GX2 performs the same as the GTX 295. Both render a preset picture in the same amount of time.
So what is the need for quad SLI? Why buy the latest and greatest if the performance is marginal? Even the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T was a waste of money. The Phenom II X4 965 performs better!
If anyone knows how to improve performance without the sacrifice of warranty on components, please advise.
This has been a terrible waste of money for me.

the core issue is that for sli to work you need both card to match spec for spec.
example i have 2 sli setup (one set 8800 gt from bfg) and the other a (9800 gt setup from evga) when you put the 2 cards in sli the faster one will drop it speed to match the slower card so i would say try pulling the slow card and you should see a performance gain.

Graphic card: MSI X1950 Pro 256 Mo Radeon
2 HD (WD 250 Go and WD 160 Go) on IDE 133 (supplied by the mainboard)
OK, I've connected everything, everythings seems to be well started, the CPU is recognized as ATHLON 64 X2 4200+, and I try to go into BIOS by pressing "DEL", as it is written on my screen (just beside "F11 to boot sequence)
Nothing happened, it seems that it freezes...
When I start the computer, I hear my HD starting, the graphic card also, everything...
    But what's going on ??
I'm a little bit disappointed, it's not the first time I do this kind of upgrade...
I've rebuilt my computer with "old" configuration MSI K7N L Athlon XP 3000+ and MSI 6600 Geforce
    Every thing is ok
I don't understand, can somebody helps me

And for my computer, all is allright now
Like a silly boy, I've connected too much things in the beginning (USB Hub I've forgot not to plug)..
And so without that, computer boots well, CPU is seeing good, RAM is OK and all the drives..
Some problems with my OS (XP and SP2), but as somebody says above, I needed to "repair" it, and all is good now
    Thanks for your answer...

  • MSI Eclipse Sli and Asus 6950 Direct CU II problem

I’ve recently bought the Asus 6950 Direct CU II 2GB. After I installed it a weird buzzing sound started coming from around the area, where the big heat sink below the cpu socket sits. That only happened when the graphics card was on high profile and particularly when I was in any game.
About a month later my card stopped working properly so thinking it was its fault I used the warranty and got it replaced. However with the new card the system won’t even start. My monitor goes from “Please check signal cable” to “No signal” and apparently the system is not even moving past the bios checks.
The weird think is that when I use my old card (MSI R4870 1GB) the system seems to work properly!!! I tried the 6950 in two different systems and it seems to be working….
I’ve tried resetting the bios removing other devises to test the power supply etc., but nothing works, I can only think that something is wrong with the motherboard.
Any ideas on what might be wrong???
    My system is:
    MB: MSI Eclipse Sli
    CPU: Core I7 920
PSU: TAGAN TG700-U88 PIPEROCK SERIES 700W
    RAM: 3 x CORSAIR TR3X6G1600C9 Triple DDR3
HDD: WD Velociraptor 150GB for the OS

Thanks for the timely reply HU16E.
I don't have another psu available right now but I will in 3 days so I will try that.
On the other hand I have mine working as a single rail from the day I bought it (turbo mode switch on the psu), but i am not sure how this can be connected.
Also while I was playing around with the system it started up, only once, with the 6950, and that happened with everything connected so I still can't figure what the hell is happening!!!! I am thinking that something on the pcie port is wrong so i tried on the other ports too, yet nothing happened.
I am still leaning towards the motherboard but any other ideas would be welcomed.

  • P6n sli and e6700 3.2 ghz cpu problem

hello. my mobo is p6n sli (ms-7350 model).. i changed my old cpu(e4400) with new one(e6700 3.2 ghz). but i didnt get any visual from monitor. the thing is i checked mobo' s cpu support list and e6700 is there but it s an old model with 2.66 ghz. but mine is 3.2 ghz. what can i do now?

Quote from: Henry on 17-February-12, 08:52:44
Simple fact is the P6N SLI does not support the newer 45nm CPUs. The e6700 2.66 GHz is 65nm, the e6700 3.2 GHz is 45nm. There is nearly a 4 year difference between the 2 and technology moves on and leaves the old stuff behind. What's unfair about that?
Try and get your hands on a good P45 Platinum MB if you can find one. Much better than your NVIDIA chipset MB anyway.
    According to this: http://us.msi.com/product/mb/P6N-SLI.html#/?div=CPUSupport
some 45nm CPUs are supported such as e5200, e5300, and e5400
Simple update in CPU micro code would fix the problem

  • Is it possible to put the new nVidia GTX 480 in the Mac Pro

I'm planning on creating the ultimate gaming machine, but also want the best operating system. So I have decided that my next computer will be the Mac Pro and will have the new nVidia GTX 480 (if it works). The Windows partition would be used for heavy gaming with DX 11 and PhysX technology. While on the OSX partition I could use the greatest operating system, to do general things like Movie Making, Picture Editing, Web Surfing, Emailing etc.
So all in all, is it possible to install a GTX 480 on OSX? I know it'll work with the windows partition, but not sure about OSX. I'm also unsure about the hardware side of things, but that's why I'm asking!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks again,
    Mike

If you don't need dual processor, PC with 980X Gulftown makes sense.
Forget over clocking a Mac, but if you need dual processor, the Mac Pro makes sense but expect to pay. Otherwise, take a look at
    EVGA Classified SR-2 (Super Record 2) 270-WS-W555-A1
    http://www.evga.com/products/prodlist.asp?switch=5
Apple has not had good Nvidia drivers. And right now there are two 6-pin, and you need 6 + 8 and stick with Windows 7 and ability to do SLI. I laugh when people talk about "windoz" (rude) being somehow less or 'inferior' having seen the best - and worst - of both (never got caught up in 95/98/NT/XP so spoiled by only knowing Vista/7). I still think 10.6 hasn't quite caught up to 7 in areas that really matter, like threading, multicore, efficient use of memory.
Forget using more than one, Apple likes graphic cards that are low power, low end, and only supporting one high end card.
The GTX 480 @ $499, and if Apple offered it, it would be $549 or more (Apple 'tax' for smaller market and having to do their own drivers). And it would be much later before optimized drivers (maybe next year this time at best).
While you can go water and add custom fans and cooling, the Mac is much more of a "closed" box in many ways beyond RAM and hard drives and +very limited+ selection of graphics.
That really is my honest assessment.
The place where Mac Pro is easier, you can install 32-64GB RAM without trouble and not have to worry about compatibility or PSU issues. I'm always surprised by all the memory testing and supported and problems PC owners go through (I don't think Cruical Ballistix gets enough credit).
DX11 will still take time. Adobe showed how GPGPU/CUDA could benefit, but Apple and Adobe apps have always tended to favor ATI which is just beginning to get into OpenCL technology ... and the 5000 series may find Nvidia Fermi, while it took longer, runs hot and power requirement, could be better poised down the road too.
A single socket Mac Pro 3.3GHz or even stock (same as 920) will do the job you want.

Are a good selection and place to shop. My the time Gulftown + GTX480 and all the rest is out and ready could be more than a few months.

  • Very disappointed with replacement quality for my MSI GTX 480 Lightning

    Hello,
    Here is my original thread
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=154517.0
I sent my MSI GTX 480 Lightning last week and I received a RMA replacement today with different serial #.
I did noticed that RMA dept. replaced the TIM before they shipped. I tried them with default clock to test the stability and it was very unstable.
My fan would go up to 100% and it would give me close to 90c temperature. My previous gtx 480 lightning would never go above mid 70c with 100% fan.
I set everything to default and played my favorites games and games was chappy like FPS would go up and down randomly. I tried Nvidia driver 285.62 and 290.36 beta, but both would behave same.
I even tried with other bio switch, but samething. I also noticed that new serial # was also manufactured in May 2011 (My previous gtx 480 lightning was also manufactured in May 2011) and they both comes with 701mhz core clock instead of 750mhz core clock. I am hugely disappointed. I doubt RMA dept tested this card before they sent out. Do I need to pay a shipping again for a RMA?
I currently have two MSI video cards (gtx 480 lightning and R6850 cyclone PE/OC), but they both having problem and I am forced to use ati 5770 in 2560 x 1600 resolutions :(
    My spec:
    i7 920 D0 4Ghz
Asus Rampage III Gene (latest bio)
    MSI gtx 480 lightning + MSI R6850 Cyclone PE/OC + sapphire 5770
    Corsair F60 SSD, Crucial M4 64 SSD, Samsung 1TB 7200rpm
Asus Xonar ST PCI sound card
    Window 7 Ultimate 64bit
    Seasonic X750 Gold PSU

I requested another RMA and I really hope I get a working one back.
I really don't want to deal with 3rd RMA and shpping cost. I know bad replacement can happen to any other company, so I am going to keep buying more MSI GPUs.

  • GTX 480 and noise?

    Hi,
I am considering bulding a new pc and has looked at the GTX 480 card. Some reviews complains about noise but often when overclocking and temp is raising to 90C or more.  Can anyone using this card with PPro tell me something about their experience and noise regarding this card?
I have a GTX 275 today and is not disturbed by noise from it. I am not overclocking my card.
    - Terje

With fan speeds below 65% the noise is acceptable, with fan speed at 100% it sounds like O'Hare during rush hour.

  • MPE layer bug(s) - GTX 480 and CS5 trial

    Hi All,
Due to some strange MPE-PPro behaviour, I am now having some last minute doubts about whether to jump up to a full version of the production suite - or perhaps wait for a .1 patch.
Please advise if any of you can spot where the cause of these problems might lie...
These are fairly easy-to-repeat MPE-related bugs in the trial version of PPro CS5, so far I have found issues both with scaling and when duplicating clips to new layers.
Current hardware is as follows (will be looking for a new i7-920/X58 mobo combo if CS5 is purchased)
    Mobo- Asus Striker Extreme
    CPU - QX6700 C2Q@ 2.66Hz
    RAM 4G
    Win7 Pro x64
So for testing purposes, I have "enabled" MPE using a GTX 480 and all seems fine for basic cuts-only or opacity fades on multiple layers. The bugs I have found seem to be related to adding more than 2 effects (even on just a few short clips...)
    Scenario 1:
    1) DV clip on layer 1, second DV clip on layer 2 scaled to 25% and positioned top left corner. Yellow line - playback behaviour is OK so far.
    2) With MPE enabled, if I add some fast CC to layer 2 clip then the footage plays back as though scaling is reset to 100% (although the slider still shows 25%)
    3) Switch from MPE to SW preview and the clip correctly returns to 25% scale (still with CC applied). Switch back and the scaling is again lost.
    Scenario 2:
    1) DVCPRO 1080 25p clip on layer 1, duplicated to layer 2 with a gaussian blur and 15% opacity (creates a basic glow effect).  Yellow line - playback behaviour is OK so far. Repeat for a second clip on to layers 3&4 with a simple opacity fade-up at start on each, overlaying the last few secs of 1&2 for the length of the fade.
    2) With MPE enabled, layers 3&4 only show when the layer 1&2 clip has reached the out point, ie the fade up on layer3&4 is "ignored" and the second clip only cuts in when the first clip has reached the out point. All the time with a Yellow line.
    3) Switch from MPE to SW preview and everything works as it should (after preview render is generated of course).
So my questions are, can anyone with a GTX 285 or (certified) Quadro repeat either of these bugs? Am I better to wait until the GTX 480 is officially certified in a few months (possibly including a patch) or is there another cause elsewhere in my current hardware?
MPE is really nice (in theory at least) but it worries me that it fails to calculate opacity occlusion and scaling correctly for such relatively simple sequences.
    Any suggestions/opinions/comments welcome!
    Cheers,
    Dave.
    Broader Pictures

    Hi Harm,
I've created a fresh test project and recreated a timeline similar to scenaio 1 (sticking to DV to rule out demanding codec issues)...
Here's the OK intial version of the timeline:
LAYER4: PIP clip scaled to 25% pos. top left, no other effects just an opacity fade-in-out
LAYER3: PIP clip scaled to 25% pos. top right, no other effects just an opacity fade-in-out
LAYER2: PIP clip scaled to 25% pos. bottom right, no other effects just an opacity fade-in-out
LAYER1: Simple clip no scaling full screen (backdrop), fast cc effect w/ default values
Preview bar is yellow and play back is fine with MPE on.
THEN, if I add any other MPE-enabled effect to any layer, the preview goes red and the top-most layer disappears from the preview monitor!
The rendered preview also omits layer 4, as soon as I turn off MPE, the timeline returns to red and layer 4 pops right back on the monitor!
Is this just a trial limitation of the MPE module, rather than restrict the 'extra' effect/layer to render-only you lose it altogether? This just seems a bit of a strange way to promote such an important feature, it certainly hasn't helped me decide on if/when to purchase, or perhaps it has?
    Any more thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Dave.

  • Power Supply and GTX 480

I have a Power Supply that has 4 rails. 2 of which are 30 Amps each, 12V3 and 12V4. Can I use one rail per connection to give me to total 42 amps that I need to run the GTX 480?
    John

This one is the Rosewill RBR1000-M
    12V1 is 24pin MB
    12V2 is PCI-E 6 and 6+2 Pin fixed
12V3 is CPU 4+4, Peripheral, Floppy, SATA, PCI-e 6 pin and 6+2 pin (Modual 1)
12V4 is CPU 8 pin, Peripheral, Floppy, SATA, PCIe 6 pin and 6+2 pin (Modual 2)
    1 & 2 are each 20 Amp rails and 3 & 4 are 30 Amp Rails. 4 rails total.
Picture of plate is attached. This should arrive Monday. I probably should have gotten the Corsair but I had already ordered this

  • PC for prem CS5? GTX 480, which brand? Shuttle?

    Hi
I'm trying to decide for a graphics card and PX-box for premiere CS5.
I'm considering bying the GTX 480
There are some different makers of that card:
    MSI, Gainward, ASUS, EVGA
Any suggestions why I should select one manufacturer before the other?
I see EVGA has some superclocked versions.... any thoughts about those?
I'm also considering buying the Shuttle SX58J3 SFF computer, support up to 16GB memory, LGA1366 Socket, Intel X58 Express, up to 4 SATA-300 disks.
Reason for this choice is that I want to be able to take the PC with me without to much hassle.
This comes standard with a 500W PS, but I belive I should be able to put in another more powerful PS... e.g. a 600W one.
Or is this a bad choice?
    I7 CPU:
    2.8 GHz or 3.2 GHz ?
Any suggestions on which CPU and number of cores, will I notice that much difference between 2.8 and 3.2?
I'm to edit footage from Canon 5D MK II.

As for your original post, Shuttle is out of the question - buy a nice asus MB - they will all be pretty much the same for the i7.
I took an HP 180 (I7 975 8 thread quad duo core proc, put 24 GB of ram in it (at hp's expense) then yanked out their GTX-200 that came stock and put a GTX-480 from EVGA.
The GTX480 uses ALOT of power.  When I say ALOT I mean 3 ea SLI cables - not one or two like most cards.  So my 4xsli corsair 850W ps BARELY got ONE GTX 480 running in this system, but it is running very stable, and premiere pro plus media converter just rip through avchd like nobody's business (my other PC estimated a week to transcode a couple of hours of avchd video from a canon hfs-10 camera shot at 24mbps 1080x1920.  It was a quad core 2.83 Ghz system with an SLI card) - I just gave my new machine that task, the lights dimmed in the room, and in 30 min it was finished.
Cramming all the nice wire loomed power cables from the 850W p/s wasn't easy but they did finally fit and all the covers went on, plus I have room internally for a second 2TB hitachi drive, and 2 ea external (oh thank you) SATA plugs.
I just got this card in here and fired the puppy up, so now its time to make sure all the drivers are proper, but it seems to be.  I think the lesson I learned after having to rip out HP's little chinese power supply is GO BIG on the power supply - and if you are even thinking of SLI, go TWICE as big.  The 850W supply runs one GTX480 card, one disc drive, and an i7/975+24GB ram and a video recorder card.  The air comming out the back is HOT - as in heater hot.
The second lesson I learned is get a big case!  This tiny HP case is cute and all that but it lacks the room inside for much internal hardware.  It's a midsize tower case - If I were doing it from scratch I'd buy a fullsize tower case.
So why didn't I?  I got a great deal on the 24GB of ram from HP and the 1GHZ pricessor.  I paid less for a maxed out system than I could buy the ram and the processor for due to discounts.  Unfortunately HP never thought anyone would stuff a corsair 850 and GTX 480 inside where their itty bitty stuff once was.
If you have a big enough case (floor standing full height) and a big enough power supply (6 SLI) 1500 W you could probably make a decent SLI system with 2 GTX480 pcbs (you realize thats 1024 cuda cores, ,right?)
Think Big and you won't be using drive bays to stuff power cables into  so you can get the lid on the system.  As others have said, asus, bfg, evga all make good equipment.  I found a sweet deal on the evga which is the only reason I went that direction.  Sweet deals change in one week, so be sure to buy what you want when the price dips.  If you are planning a real SLI system, buy BOTH cards form the same MFGR at the same time

  • Over volted gtx 480 using MSI afterburner now it wont boot.

I have a gtx 480 that I set to 1213 volts under water cooling.I was under the impression that with low WC temps I would be fine. I was stupid enough to run furmark, ran fine for about 3 minutes then computer shut down. I think the voltage is hard locked into the card I have tried booting with a second card (SLI Mobo) but the entire pc simply wont boot if I have my 2 pcie power connectors plugged in. Fan spins up and pc posts if no power connectors are connected but even with a second card as primary windows does not detect the card. I have tried using a second PSU to power the card while primary PSU powers mainboard and PCIE bus but I get the same issue. Computer refuses to boot. Lights come on for about half and second then I need to unplug the power cable and switch off psu to get any sort of response from my pc. I wish I didn't set the voltage to 1.2 ect, I know this is my own fault, but is there anything I can do on my own end to fix this?

I'm pretty sure aware afterburner only changes the cards values when running the profile in Windows so it should have reset on reboot.
Can you try the card in another machine to determine if it's damaged?
Clear the motherboard CMOS too. >>Clear CMOS Guide<<

  • NF980-G65 No 3 way SLI.

I had 2 GTX 480 and a GT240. My motherboard says 16x 16x 0x  or 16x 8x 8x. I can run the GTX 480s in the first two slots for 16x. I can also run a GTX 480 in the first slot at 16x and 3 slot at 8X for better cooling then I add a GT240 in the second slot for physic  and had 16x 8x and 8x worked perfect just like it says. But I bought a third GTX 480 and with all three in The first two slots only work. no triple SLI.It says in the manual to set it to 16x 8x 8x, but I cant find any setting to do that. Please help?I looked for another motherboard for AMD and INTEL and cant find and new supported processor motherboards that support triple Nvidia SLI at triple 16x 0r 16x 8x 8x.The support information for my motherboard is out dated it only shows support up to a GTX 285s but it does support GTX 480.Which it does.

I am running 3 way SLI w/285 gtx.  I notice the front panel connectors (power on, etc) block the double wide
285 gtx on the MOBO.  If the bottom 3-way sli card is pressed  in firmly, works for awhile   but later, it comes back out and you wind up with a 3 way sli connnector (the red ight on the GTX  tells you but who is staring at the rear of their computer?)
Whenthis happens "on the fly", two card are operable. but
i suppose you could fry your card liek that because my computer would turn up black
screen during a game (about 5 -8 minutes).  The top card was very very hot to the touch.
So tihs mean these thing are in the wong place.,  i am lookng for a fix or I am going to have to mod the mobo plugs before my video cards and possibly other hardware get ruined.
I  first noticed becase the 3rd card was not level with the others.  I am looking for solution but I know I am going to have to do the mod the front panel connector.(JFP1 & JFP@2).
"prevent double wide GTX cards form seatin properly w/ 3 way sli."

  • GTX 480's on sale at Dell for $365 (thru June 10th)

    Folks,
Well, maybe I can be of help myself. I'm new 'round here and hope my listing a hardware deal in this forum isn't a faux pas. I wanted as many PPro CS5 users as possible to see it here in this forum. For all I know, listing deals anywhere on this Adobe site is a no-no - so, sorry if I'm wrong in this!
I just bought a GTX 480 for $364 plus tax at Dell.... EVGA model 015-P3-1480-AR.
The sale has not fully completed as I type this, but shows as being far enough along in my PayPal account to have me think it is legit, plus I've gotten a confirmation email from Dell. All that might trip it up now is Dell being out-of-stock come shipping time.
I do not have an account or other special treatment from Dell. I think anyone can get in on this.
A coupon code for 30% off computer accessories makes it happen. The code is supposed to be good through June 10th. I doubt the stock will last that long. There are a number of exclusions, including monitors, but the code still covers quite a bit.
    Code: HHM4QNZ3303N1Z
I found this info at "Slickdeals.net". Go to their website and hunt down the deal through a search. I'd link to it, but can't figure out how and wanted to get this up fast.
    Good luck!
    Joel E.

That's a very good price, considering Newegg is about $500

  • MSI GeForce GTX 780 SLI question.

    Hi,
I wonder if my MSI GeForce GTX 780 Gaming OC is compatible with the MSI GeForce GTX 780 Lightning LE in SLI?
    Thanks!
    BR, Tobias

as long as both cards are using the same GPU (GTX 780 GK110) and they both have the same amount of VRAM (EG: 3GB+3GB) then they will be able to be used in SLI as long as your PSU can power both of them!
you can use SLI even with different manufacturers cards so long as its the same spec (GPU) as the other and the VRAM frame buffers match each other as both need the same amount!
