Re: Windows activation key and clean Win7 installation

Hi,
me again :-)
So, I will install the new ssd in my Tecra R840!
Since I do not want to clone my actual hdd to ssd but, instead, make a fresh window 7 professional 64 bit install, how can I accomplish this without any DVD (my previous Toshibas..
.I had 2 before, first one dated from 1997 had CD/DVDs with the OS!).
So, I have the activation key in the label at the back of my Tecra but I do not have the media with OS!
Please help to solve this :-)
Regards,
paulo

Since, I think, 6 years Toshiba doesn't offer notebooks with recovery DVDs anymore. Original recovery image for certain notebook model is saved on HDD and every notebook owner must/should create recovery disc using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator tool.
Please create this disc before you change anything and use this disc for further OS installation.
If you have more questions you are welcome.

  • What, if anyting, does pressing the windows flag key and the "r" key do?

Last night some one with a very strong accent called, addressing me by name,  saying he had been contracted to contact people and warn them of a serious problem that affecting many computers.  He wanted me to press my windows flag key and the "r" key at the same time.  Stupid me did, but then became suspicious and hung up on him.  He never called back, and I turned my computer off.  Did I give him access to something?  What do I need to do?

I'm sure that was a scam call, but you hung up before they could do anything malicious to your computer. Pressing the Windows key + R just brings up the "Run" screen. It is completely harmless to bring up "Run," but if you had continued to follow all the steps this guy was about to give you, he probably would have tried to gain remote access to your computer or load a virus or some other awfulness. I'm glad you hung up on him!

  • Replacing preinstalled Windows with "normal" and clean Windows installation (T500)

    Hello,
is there any way, how to replace preinstalled Windows with my super-clean installation of Windows? I'm really not happy with partitioning (honestly, I'm using Linux, so I want just Win partition, Boot partition, Extended partition (with root, home, swap) --- no recovery partition, no foobar partition, which just make no sense for me), given features which I don't need etc. I would rather have clean setup of Windows 7 and have computer installed my way. Also I don't like such toolbar things, and crappy ware of Lenovo already installed.
I can backup Windows 7 activation and restore it to new clean installation - so I don't need to buy new disc... But - where can I get that clean Windows 7 Ultimate shiny disc? Do anyone know? Is it possible to download it from MS site?

The preloaded Windows 7 will probably run faster than a retail version due to the EE optimized drivers. Just uninstall Norton, the Office 2010 Starter trial, the additional media software, and you should be good to go.

  • Windows Activation Key - Help!

My screen shattered, so I bought a replacement of the same model and copied the Windows partition over.  It works great, except that Windows claims it still needs activation.  Both computers had legitimate, similar licences for Windows.  If I can enter the Activation Key, I'd be all set, but can't find it in the packaging or on the laptop.
I don't want to reinstall windows, as the whole point was to keep up and running with everything already installed.
How do I get the key for my laptop?
    Thanks!

Happy to help, NirSoft has some good stuff. Avoid the online-adapted Key-Getters.
You could try msoft's migration software. They are touting it for transferring from XP to a new OS. I have never used it but as a developer, I am often rebuilding the OS from factory images (just don't ask!! -LOL) and I always resort to installing everything again, manually.
Most of the slick-trick apps that are supposed to make migration easy, take more time than just biting the msoft-poisoned-bullet and installing stuff myself.
Another option for you could be to use something like VMWare Player (free) and create a Virtual machine for all your stuff. Then that VM can be copied anywhere and all the installed stuff will work fine. I actually do that for my development platform as installing the dev-platform and up-dating with all my extensions can take a day or so every time. The down side to the Player is it is a little slower, but it is the best of the free VMs I have tried and I have tried a lot.

  • Clean Win7 installation in infinite cycle

I am attempting to downgrade from Win8 to Win7 Ultimate 64bit.   I have installed a new SSD and disconnected my old Win 8 drive.  The clean installation process started normally but eventually hung on the "Completing Installation".  I
am running i7 and 6GB of RAM, so I assumed it was hung for good after nearly 2 hours and no apparent progress or DVD spin.  I hard rebooted as a last resort.  Maybe it was premature .. I don't know.  The computer now boots to Win7 with
empty desktop except for a single model dialog that states something like "Installation is incomplete.  Please click the OK button and the computer will reboot to complete the installation".   The subsequent reboot ends exactly like
the first.   When I boot from the DVD installation, it loads to a blank desktop (only background) and no ability to do anything.  I must hard reboot at this point too.
At this point, I am just looking for a way to fix this or wipe the drive and start anew.   I can't seem to figure out how to do either.   I am not a BIOS and boot disk guy, so if you are kind enough to help, would you please provide detailed
instructions.  Please don't tell me to boot to DISKPART and expect me to understand :-)).
    Thank you.

    Hi,
Can you confirm you have set  boot from DVD as the first priority in BIOS?

  • Question about replacement hard drives and clean win7 install fo x61

We are getting a X61-7674 from my wife's job- they are removing the original hard drive so I need to get a new one and do a fresh install of Windows 7.
Two questions-  can I get any laptop hard drive or are there certain brands that won't work with the x61- I have looked at the prices on the Lenovo site vs. newegg so would like to be able to buy a generic 2.5 drive.
second question- in terms of doing a clean install of windows 7, what is the sequence for installing drivers- assume I load w7 first- what drivers will I need to load- do I have to put them on a thumb drive to load them? Basically wondering what will work once I have loaded W7 and what drivers i'll need to download.
Would appreciate any help on either question-
    Thanks.

    1) you can use any 2.5 inch sata hdd of 9.5 mm thickness.
    2) Windows update should pick up most of the hardware and install the correct drivers for them. However, there are still some stuffs that you have to install yourself. Such as:

  • Windows 7 Key (X131e)

    Hey guys,
I've got a Lenovo Thinkpad X131e with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit und a option for Win 8 with some win 8 recovery disks (but i only need win 7).
Some weeks ago I installed a SSD and installed a Windows 7 Pro .iso from the internet. I read that the bios got a back up of the Windows activation key and the activation goes automatically but this was a fail...
Some days ago windows suddenly asks for a activation key and I dont know where is should get this key. Under the battery is no key and I get the oem key from the bios with a tool but the windows-activation only say: "This is a windows-standard-key....and not for activating Windows 7 Professional 64bit".
I hope somebody can help me with this confusing activation of windows. My last chance is to install win 8 with the recovery disks and maybe downgrade to win 7 but i want to avoid this step.
    Thanks for your help!
I'm German, so I'm sorry for my average english

    Hi,
fresh Windows reduction for auto activation from the BIOS SLIC should be OEM. Perhaps your .iso is retail one. Reinstall OS from the same image but before you'll perform that ask google about ei.cfg file within .iso, what is it for and how it could help.
It's impossible to manually activate Windows using the key from the BIOS.
Why do not clone your image from the HDD to the new SSD if you still have it?

Glad to hear you had the forethought to write down the registration key.  Personally I keep a separate listing of all my keys for my various computers as it can come in handy at times.
Yes, you can use the key to tell you which version of Windows 7 you have,  Check out my link below to the free PIDX utility. Most likely you had Windows 7 Home Premium x64 which was the usual version installed on your model.

  • How to retrieve original Microsoft Office activation key after restoring Windows 7?

I had a operating system self-distruct and could not do anything to get past the BSOD.  Using a recovery CD, I was able to access OneKey Restore which restored WIndows 7.  With my original notebook purchase I purchased Office 2010 and had a valid activation key - and have used Office since that time.  Now that I have restored the OS, I don't know how to find the key again so Office won't run. Any ideas on what to do? Thanks.

  • Keyboard and Windows Prod key Question

    1. I just bought a second T61 new from Lenovo. The keys on this laptop require a lot of finger pressure to press as compared to the one I bought previously back in Feb 08. Has anything changed? I keep on mis typing and missing words while typing.
    2. Also, when I was ordering the laptop, I chose to downgrade to windows XP. It did come with windows XP, but the sticker on the bottom of the laptop says, "Windows Vista Business OEMAct". Does that mean the product key for windows printed below it may also be wrong? I am afraid if I re image the computer at a later point, it will ask for a windows prod key and if there is a wrong one printed at the bottom, I will be screwed. How do I check the product key on the sticker is correct?

I'm not sure about the Windows Key, but as far as keyboards go, the keyboard in the T61 is the exact same as the keyboard in earlier T60 models.  I just got a brand new one a month ago and it is perfect, so you may just have a faulty keyboard.  I would call Lenovo and ask for a replacement keyboard (I assume you are under warrenty)

  • Mac/Windows cd key - question for gamers

    Hey
This a question for people who understand CD Serial Keys.
I have Battlefield 2142. I want to buy a new cd key, for a fresh start, due to Punk Buster implications...
I found this website: https://cdkeys.com.au but for Battlefield 2142 it says: OS: Windows XP ... or I could just buuy from Origin as a PC download, not sure if that means Mac as well.
So say I downloaded the Windows version, can I use that CD Serial Key, for my Mac version. (my mac version was purchased as a disk, back in 2008).
Thanks for you help and replies!!!

    Hi there
    What is your current problem?
Which operating system are you using now?
If you want, you can try to contact HP and see if recovery media is available, for reinstallation OS to factory settings:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=in&lc=en&docname=bph07143
If the 25 character product key has faded, your alternate option to download Windows 7 ISO and clean install CANNOT be thought of.

  • Windows activation tells that an error has occured

Last night i had a window open that told me there was a windows activation error and that my version of windows was not valid. When I try and open the Windows Activation it tells me that an error has occured. Code: 0x80070424.
I am using the windows that was preinstalled on the computer. BUT, I ended up having to buy back up disks from Toshiba and the service centre reinstalled it for me. Not sure if there is an issue there or if it's internal.
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    Will.

No sorry. I should have explained it better. Here's a time line.

    2. Had a hard drive error April 2011
    3. Purchased recovery disks and had the computer fixed - windows reinstalled by Toshiba Service Centre (Qld) April 2011
    4. Yesterday i had the window pop up from Windows telling me there was a problem and i wasnt running a genuine version of windows.
    5. I tried to run the "Activate Windows" on my computer but it comes up with an error and tells me to contact Toshiba.
