Read a Kernel Panic?
Is there any way from reading this message to tell what is actually causing the kernel panic errors?
Thanks
Thanks for the advice. I posted on your reply from my older discussion question.
I was able to unlock the drive enough times to copy over 4/5ths of the data (it crashed frequently mid-process). There are still some gigs of data I really, really, really want, but I think the iMac is all done being helpful. In Recovery Mode using the Terminal, when I unlock the CS volume, it crashes right after it is unlocked and attempts to mount.
So no backup, but much of the important data has been recovered.
However, in Recovery Mode, when I try a disk repair with the drive locked, I get a lot of checksum errors. Then it just hangs indefinitely.
Are there any alternatives to HFS+ on the horizon? I just don't think it plays well with FileVault.

Please help read a kernel panic
Good day!
I just got my first kernel panic while resuming the Mid 2014 rMBP15 from night's sleep. I hope someone can point me to what might have caused it, I'm new to OSX and haven't learned to read them yet. Here's the log:

Kernel panic on mac pro while playing Starcraft 2
Hello all,
recently I had my second kernel panic since I bought my Mac Pro mid 2010 single core at 2.80 ghz, the computer was bought approximately 4 months ago.
The crash occurred while I was playing the game Stacraft 2 with 3 other friends tonight, while I was playing I had the classic black screen and the writing saying I had to reboot the system. After the crash I ran a complete Apple Hardware test and it didn't detect any problem at all.
On a side note my Mac pro has 3 gb of ram installed at the moment and on the same hard drive I made a bootcamp partition to run Windows 7 on it, tough I have still around 500 gb of space left on the hard drive.
Also I have bought recently a wireless Logitech Mouse which I am not completely sure it's 100% compatible with a Mac.
What do you think guys this could be a hardware issue or just some bad data which was written on the hard drive. To be honest I really don't know what to do since with my previous iMac I never experienced such crashes so I am getting a bit worried.... I read also kernel panics could be a sign the machine is partially broken.
Thank you in advance for all the replies.Ok I had a look at the log you mentioned. From what I see here it seems an issue concerning the video card but to be honest I am not really sure about it,
Here is the log anyway if you would like to have a look and sorry for the spam:

Black flickering, freezing, kernel panics
Hi,
I'm hoping someone can help me out. My 2009 13" MBP seems to be having some issues and I can't fingure out what's going on.
Every now and then, the lower half of the screen will flash black repeatedly. This has happened in Safari in full screen and in Sketchbook Pro. While in SBP, the image will usually disappear, replaced with grey. I can usually still save the image, quit the app and reload. If it happens in Safari, the flashing will happen breifly, then the image will sort of stutter and spit and go crazy. When this happens, I have to hard start my computer.
A sort of similar thing happens when I play StarCraft 2. Once the game starts, at random intervals, the game will freeze. Sometimes, this is preceded by the black flickering on the bottom half of the screen. Sometimes, it is not. I spoke with Blizzard about it and, after having me trouble shoot a few things, they determined that I was having kernel panics.
Since updating today to 10.8.3, the Sarai issue seems to have fixed itself (so far). I haven't tried SBP yet but StarCraft remains unplayable. I had a full on kernel panic while the game was updating, and then a system freeze when I tried to play them game. No log from the freeze but I have included the kernel log below.
Now, I did update both the HDD and the RAM not too long ago. I'm not certain if there is any relation but I bought PNY 8 GB (two 4 GB) 1333 MHz DDR3. It shows up in my "About This Mac" and I did a hardware test that confirmed the RAM is OK.
I've searched the forum and I don't know if anyone is having this issue but I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm outside the warrenty and I don't know what to do. I don't know how to read the kernel panic log.
Thanks

I'm surprised to learn that you 'got by' with no kp's for four months! Oh, and just as a buying suggestion... I would shop the Crucial, Corsair or OWC websites for RAM - they guarantee Mac compatibility. As a matter of fact, go to the Crucial site and click on the System Scanner tab and download the small app that will report back to Crucial your model and suggest a RAM upgrade path for you.
Good luck,

Kernel panic on MacBook Air 5,2 (2012) Gotomeeting, Skype, audio
Hi,
I'm experiencing Kernel Panics while using applications like GoToMeeting and Skype.
Using Console.app and reading the kernel panic log, I read something like:
last loaded kext com.apple.driver.AppleUSBCDC
and also these drivers:
com.apple.driver.AudioAUUC
com.apple.driver.Apple.ThunderboltDPInAdapter
com.apple.driver.AppleIntelHD4000Graphics
How do I know which driver is the problem? Is there a way to report this kernel panic
to AppleCare? The MBA is on warranty
Thanks
OliverIs seems that the problem appears after enabling video calling, both in Skype and GotoMeeting.
Also, in the Apple Store the Genius migrated from a MBP 10.6 to the MBA, I don't know if he migrated drivers or something.
Thanks

Constant Kernel Panic Mac Pro 2008
Hello World,
I recently had some problems with my Mac Pro early 2008 (Black Screen at boot) and an Apple Certified Service Provider checked it out and changed the logic board.
Now it works, but wait, what's this? It boots, but always after a few minutes I get a "You need to restart you computer..." Kernel Panic and computer halts.
Tried a few things: zapping Pram, booting from Install CD (to make sure it's not the installed system), Connecting only screen & Keyboard... no change in symptoms. I didnt yet do a long term Power disconnect to reset the SMC, but when I took the system from the shop it was in th box and thus unplugged for a few hours, so that doesn't seem promising either.
It's a plain vanilla system configuration, a 2.8MHZ, 2GB RAM, ATI 2600 system with only the original Apple parts, fully updated.
Of course I will get back at the repair tech, but he just went on holiday and I wont hear from them until next week. Bah. Maybe some genius here can read a Kernel Panic Report from the logs and give me a hint...maybe it's something I could fix myself, I just don't see it yet...I post 2 logs, to show that it seems to me that different applications cause it to panic.

End of Reports. Any Ideas?
Message was edited by: Joe from GermanyThe dependencies suggest a problem related to the video card or video drivers. This could be a bad memory problem or it could indicate a problem with the video card itself or corruption of the drivers.
As a start you might try reinstalling OS X:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update. -
Kernel Panic probably caused by Video Card: solutions?
Hi,
I have a G4 iBook, 12", 1.2 GB Ram, 1.2 Ghz, should be "Late 2004" Model.
This morning, while I was surfing, suddenly OS X crashed, just freezing everything on my screen (not the multi-language kernel panic screen), still on and working but no movement on the screen. Surprised, I hold down the power button and then again to start it again. Read the kernel panic (KP) log, send it to Apple and just after few minutes it does the same. The KP log is always the same, I use it for about a minute, then it happens again. Another reboot and then the iBook stops just before the login window. So, if I switch it on, it chimes, usual grey Apple logo, then the screen becomes blue as it always used to do before showing the login window but the it stops there.
If I boot with command-S, I obtain a working root command line, didn't check if it hangs in this way. If I boot in Safe Mode, it works, but it hangs there as well after few minutes. As you see in the KP Log, the cause is probably the ATI Graphic Card (even cnsidering that screen just freezes, as if the graphic card doesn't send nothing new to the screen), but I have no idea how I could solve this issue.
KP Log is the following:
Mon Apr 26 11:36:01 2010

Any ideas? Any help?I believe you're right; your graphics card has some trouble. The iBooks are notorious for such things, unfortunately. I believe the heat of the machine causes the connections to loosen.
If you're in the US, you can send the logic board to Super Reball and have them fix up the connections; I believe the cost is around $75, if you remove the board yourself.

Clean installed iMac has kernel panic's
Hi,
I have a 2011 iMac with 16GB Kingston Memory installed. I have no USB devices connected. Only a keyboard and a ethernet cable. I keep on having kernel panic's with this iMac. An employee at a Apple Premium Reseller shop adviced me to do a clean install. I did this, but now i'm having this kernel panic again. I have not installed any suspicous software, just standard stuff like Adobe, Askype, Chorme, iWork … and so on.
Can anyone read a kernel panic file and determine what the problem might be?
Thanks in advance,
Hannes

MacPro - Kernel Panic while reading a movie... what can i do ?
Hi all, i'm from Paris, France so please excuse my approximative english !
Here is my computer : MacPro - 2x2.8Ghz Quad-Core Xeon, 8Go Ram - OSX 10.5.7 - Hardware test done : all is ok.
Here is the problem :
When i launch a video, with EyeTv live for example or a mpeg with VLC, some seconds or less a minute later my computer displays a Kernel Panic...
Does someone knows what happens ?
Thanks !Thx for your answer...
"Perhaps EyeTV or VLC or something else isn't compatible with 10.5.7.
Check and see if those are the latest versions. "
Both are compatible, and the kernel Panic also occured when i was on 10.5.6
"While there is no easy way to say what caused k/p's, it could be a USB cable or device, or any piece of hardware, sometimes marginal memory, it can be a combination of software code sometimes."
"EyeTV though uses USB? so if you watch video with VLC but not via EyeTV (YouTube and other types of media) does it work okay? "
Yes, EyeTv uses USB but the problem occurs also when i watch movie with VLC !
"If you try to repair your system, make sure to use 10.5.7 also, and that any utility is 10.5.7 compatible. "
i did, but nothing changed...
i really don't understand what happens... -

By looking at what processes are in the backtrace, you may be able to determine if it is a bad kext.
It is very rare that an Apple kext will cause a panic, so any third-party kexts are suspect.
You can test if it is a third-party kext by booting into Safe Mode. If it doesn't panic in Safe Mode, then it is one of the third-party kexts as most of those will be disabled in Safe Mode.
Some kexts are known bad actors, like the Soundflower driver.
Very often kexts will break with an OS upgrade. If the developer isn't actively working to update the drivers for the new OS, they will cause kp's until fixed.
AV software is also implicated quite often.
If it continues to panic in Safe Mode or when all third-party kexts have been uninstalled, it is likely a hardware problem.
Disconnect any external peripherals except keyboard and mouse. If it doesn't panic, it might be one of the external devices.
If no external hardware, kexts, then it is something wrong with the hardware. If you had third-party kexts installed, I would reinstall the OS first before considering the hardware.
Finally, bad RAM is very often the cause of kp's on Macs as people try to install cheap RAM and it can't handle the load that OS X puts on the memory. Even if not incompatilbe RAM, RAM can come unseated (rare with the connectors these days) or fail.

OS X can't read SD card/kernel panic, windows XP or Vista
I'm using my friend's camera. It comes with an SD card. I tried to upload the photos to my macbook but every time i hook it up, i instantaneously get a kernel panic. On my brother's macbook, nothing happens. Literally nothing. He doesn't get a kernel panic, but it doesn't even mount.
On my dad's laptop, which is a PC, everything's ok. It shows up without problems.
What gives??I don't have the camera with me right now but first of all, I really doubt manufacturers of cameras also make the SD disks. Second of all, and I'm less sure about this, this seems to be a problem with my laptop and OS X, not the disk itself.

Kernel Panic on Mounting volume read and write
First I installed Windows with Boot Camp and Windows, than installed Parallels for the Mac, and it booted windows. As it was configuring Windows to be used with Parallels it froze the machine, and the only choice I had was to reboot the system by holding down the power button.
Now, each time I boot it up Darwin panics. After a call to apple support, I booted it into single user mode, and checked with fsck and it said it was fine. I than tried rebooted it and got the verbose message, and it happened when it attempted to mount the disk.
I went Back into single user mode. I tried to remount the partition read/write and it caused a panic. I think the partition is corrupt and I was wondering what I can do since it does the same thing on the install disk. Are there any Apple or open source solutions that may help me fix this disk?
Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)If you try to boot from the OS X Installer Disc and the computer panics then the problem is more likely hardware related.
You might try getting to the diagnostics: Insert the OS X Installer Disc One into the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run the extended diagnostics.
If you are unable to do even this without a kernel panic then take the computer in for repair.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values. -
Kernel panic(s): please read and help if you can
I've had a couple kernel panics in the past few days; I believe that two of them happened when I was away from the computer and the computer then (eventually) shut its display off, so that when I returned to the computer, it was completely unresponsive except to holding down the power button for a little while and then restarting. I've pasted the last few k.p. log files here; can anyone tell me if they are related, and what they are? (and perhaps also a quick k.p. log file primer, so I'll know what to look for in the future?)
thanks!

Kernel Panic - Can someone read my report?
So recently my Macbook has been acting up. I'll be browsing the internet or listening to music when the screen freezes and starts flickering. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off. When I restart, I'm greeted with a Kernel Panic error and it puts itself in restart limbo. The Macbook also gets a bit hot when this happens. I've found that when I reset the PRAM, it finally boots to my desktop. Downgrading to Snow Leopard and doing a clean install of Mountain Lion yeild the same problem. I'm pretty sure my graphics card is about to kick the bucket but I figured it's best to get an opinion from here.

com.apple.kec.corecrypto 1.0This crash report shows some program's management of windows is spurring a problem with the graphics card and/or related drivers. This could be from a hardware fault, corruption or bugs in the drivers, or a third-party kernel extension or other software package that is interfering with the "window server" process or the graphics system.
However, with your description of additional flickering and persistence in the face of a clean install, it's quite apparent that the problem is a hardware fault. I would recommend you back the system up ASAP and then get it serviced.
Does it boot and run properly if you load in Safe mode by holding the Shift key at startup? -

What does this mean???Welcome to Apple Discussions!
When the CPU is constantly referred to by kernel panics, and no other part of the machine is, it normally is a RAM or logicboard issue. Sometimes if the RAM or another board is not properly seated, this will happen. Just be certain, dismount, and disconnect all third party peripherals, and see if the issue persists. Make sure your hard drive isn't over 85% full (an arbitrary number), and your data is backed up. If after that is done, you can't seem to stop the kernel panics, run the hardware test disk that came with your machine. If you are missing that disk, contact the person who sold you the machine for the disk, or call AppleCare at the number below:

You didn't say if you are running an Intel or PowerPC iMac. Running the hardware test from Intel Macs is on this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
Newer PowerPC iMacs on this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
Older PowerPC iMacs came with their own hardware test CD which is bootable with the startup manager:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106178
To identify PowerPC versus Intel iMacs, see this article:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301724
If no error appears on hardware test, the problem can still be the RAM. But tell us the status of your backup before you start opening your machine. There are other issues which may be present.

Move AD users from OU SBSUsers to Users?
Naah, the migration is already done, but the users are now in the SBS OU, so I would like to move all users manually and also the GPO's. I just wonder if something could go wrong if I put them in the standard Users OU. =)
