Reader DC: DDE open command

Hello,
I am creating PDFs in a separate program, which uses a DDE command to automatically open the PDF in Adobe Reader once the PDF is created. This command is not successfully opening the PDF, although manually opening the PDF works fine. I know that similar problems occurred for Acrobat/Reader versions 10 and 11. These problems were fixed by changing the "server" for the DDE command from "acroview" to "acroview{A|R}{Major Version}" where A is used for acrobat, R for reader, and "Major Version" is "10" or "11". What is the syntax that should be used for version DC? I have tried "acroviewRDC" and "acroviewRdc" without success.
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  • Reader X: DDE Open command can open Reader but not open a specified target PDF

    Once again Adobe has issued an update which breaks existing business systems. After the fiasco of Reader 9.3.4 failing to open external files such as SWF or XLS, the new Reader X is not opening the requested PDF when called via DDE.
    The Reader X always opens with a "What do you want to do?" panel, offering various manually selected actions. What is required is for the Reader to open the PDF file specified in the DDE call, as it has done in all previous versions.
    Is there a fix for this, or an alternative calling mechanism?
    We have an external application which allows students to navigate around the various modules and lessons within their course. When they select a lesson, a DDE call is raised to request the appropriate lesson PDF to open in Reader. The external program uses a small floating, semi-transparent form, which allows easy lesson selection, automatic bookmarking and other functions. This functionality could not be achieved with simple PDF full of hyperlinks to the lessons.
    The further problem is that many hundreds of these various courses are already in use by students around the world. We cannot easily prevent them from accepting upgrades to Reader X, nor supply them all with an alternative control method. All we can do is suggest anyone experiencing this problem to dump the new version and download version 9.4
    Has anyone any ideas to fix the broken functionality in Reader X, or a satisfactory way to work around this failure ?
    Thanks

    Thanks for your contribution Dave.
    The DDE call should not be case sensitive. Various writings on this page quote Acroview and AcroView, but I have tried various combinations and results are the same whatever case is used. It is acroviewR10 which I have used with success in my updated calls.
    ManishPali has not responded to my question of where he found these R10 and A10 settings, but if these were intended to be the only access, they can give rise to even more scope for program failure. The majority of users will have only the free Reader, but some may have the full Acrobat program, and not Reader. So when we use 'acroviewR10' in our call, anyone with only Acrobat will again find the program failing.
    Also of note is that using 'acroview' works in a call to open Reader X, but will not work to close Reader X or to open a PDF within Reader X. Why is one service still recognising the plain acroview, but the other services require the R10 suffix?
    Dave says that this should be fixed in version 10.0.1, but is this just a hope, or a statement of intent from someone involved with Reader development? If this is fixed, how long will it take for that next release to be in common circulation?
    In the meantime, we are preparing patches to send to any students who experience this problem, and also upgrading the master CD for each Course to add an option to the Config menu, allowing the user to select Reader X or not.
    I think the developers at Adobe believe every user is within a corporation with centralised IT control, so everyone has the same, known version of any software and can be given new versions or advised of issues at will. In the real world, there are millions of independent users scattered across the globe who have no IT support and often have limited knowledge. For example, it is not uncommon to ask a user which version of Windows they are running and be quoted their MS Office version instead. Any extra complication in setting up or using their new software is a significant problem likely to result in lengthy support calls, and a loss of confidence in the product.

    Setting the "major version" to 12 did not work, but setting it to "15" did work. Thus, the correct syntax for the server name for DDE commands is "acroviewR15" for reader DC or "acroviewA15" for acrobat DC.
    Thanks!

  • Using VI Example Basic Serial Write Read to send AT commands to Cell phone modem error 1073807360

    I am using the NI Example VI: Basic Serial Write and Read to send AT commands to a Cell phone acting as a Modem.  I can send AT commands to this phone using Hyperterm when I select the modem driver by name in the hypert port selection field but not as com 7 which it occupies according to device manager modem properties. The basic serial vi does not show the modem driver as a selection, only ports by comX are shown. I get error 1073807360.

    Have you tried to put the name you enter in Hyperterminal in the VISA resource control? If Com 7 doesn't show, you can simply type "COM 7" in the VISA resource control. Or use "ASRL::INSTR 7".
    Also, make sure the connection in hyperterminal is closed, before you open the port in LabVIEW.
    Hope it helps,
    Wiebe.

  • Hyperlinks from my MSWord files suddenly don't work because "/FirefoxHTML\Shell\Open\Command" has somehow been added to the end of each URL.

    When I click to open the hyperlink in my Word file, the message I get in Firefox is "The requested URL /submissions.htmlFirefoxHTML\Shell\Open\Command was not found on this server." When I delete that portion of the URL, the website opens fine. What can I do to make the hyperlinks work properly?

    Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it, but it didn't work. The link information is written correctly on the MSWord page. But when I click on it and the Firefox tab opens, the page can't be found because "FirefoxHTML\Shell\Open\Command" has been added to the end of each URL. Might it help if I reset Firefox?

    There is no application called "Adobe" - you are either working with Adobe Acrobat or the free Adobe Reader. Open up the preferences for the application (Edit>Preferences), then go to the "General" category and modify the settings for "Scale for screen resolution". You will have to restart the application after you do that. Does that fix your problems?

  • Open a command window and send some keystroke to the opened command window

    Hi All,
    I am trying to open command prompt and send some key stroke to that command prompt. Here I am using Robot to send keystroke. But the problem is, the keystrokes are not sent to the prompt. I guess I need to activate progamitically the command prompt to accept the keystrokes . Please find the code below ( as I did).
    try
    String command = "cmd.exe /c start";
    Process child = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);
    Robot robot = new Robot();
    Thread.sleep(5000);
    String lol = "indranil";
    for(int i=0;i<lol.length();i++)
    robot.keyPress(lol.charAt(i));
    int g = lol.length() - 1;
    robot.keyRelease(lol.charAt(g));
    catch (Exception e) {}
    I guess I am doing some mistake here while sending the keystroke/openning the command prompt. Can anyone please help me how can I open a command window and send some keystroke to the opened command window. I am in fix.
    Thanks,
    Indranil

    The first thing to do is read the API and examples for the Robot class.

    System.in DOES read from the command shell that you start the app in.
    What you don't have is a prompt.

  • Using Maverick, error message: Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

    Receiving error message using current Maverick version: "Adobe Reader could not open '***.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).".  Is fix the same as on previous OS versions?

    Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
    There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
    If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
    and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
    From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
    The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
    Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Where are the settings for the "open" command, located at /usr/bin/open?

    I have Windows XP installed on a partition on my Macbook and I use Parallels to access some of the Windows applications.
    When I am in Mac OS X, and I don't even have a virtual machine running, if I enter the following command in the terminal, I get some really strange behavior:
    /usr/bin/open -a firefox http://localhost/~myname/somewebpage.html
    The open command will launch firefox within Mac OS X and display the page, but, it WILL ALSO TRY TO LAUNCH FIREFOX VIA PARALLELS. So, it starts a Parallels session and tries to launch Firefox. I see the Firefox icon in my dock twice, once normally, and once with the Parallels version of the Firefox icon. But, I cannot view the Parallels instance of Firefox.
    In order to debug this, I removed Firefox from Mac OS X (deleted Firefox.app from my applications folder) and I un-installed it from the windows partition using Add/Remove programs in windows.
    Now, running the open command as stated above launches Safari in Mac OS X and it still launches parrallels.
    Where is the list of application associations that the "open" command uses? I assume there is some incorrect associate that is causing this but, I have no idea how to find it.
    Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

    Thank you for your reply.
    I actually checked out the man page for "open" but, I was unable to find LaunchServices in the finder. I was hoping there would be some sort of manifest, or application map, within LaunchServices that might be the source of my problem.
    Regarding using the full path: Good suggestion. That will clear it up when I use the command line, or if I were writing my own app, etc...unfortunately, I became aware of this problem because Netbeans is using the command in the abbreviated form I posted above (to launch web applications I am debugging), and I can't edit it.
    I removed Firefox from both Windows and Mac OS X on my machine, and tested the Netbeans functionality, it launched my application in Safari with no errors. I reinstalled Firefox on my Mac OS X partition and selected it in Netbeans preferences as the browser to use when debugging an app. When I tried to debug an application in Netbeans again, I got the same behavior...parallels launched. Ugh.
    There was a folder, on the Windows side of things, called something like Parallels\Shared Applications. It had a shortcut to Firefox in it but, I removed that before doing my testing. I was hoping there would be something similar on the Mac OS X side but, I haven't been able to find anything.
    Thank you both for your help. I think I might need to visit the Parallels forums for this one.

    The -compat=4 (and the default -compat=5) compilation modes are not related to the compiler version. All compiler versions from 5.0 (1998) through 5.10 (2009) have these options. The C++ Migration Guide
    [http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5266]
    explains the differences in detail between -compat=4 and -compat=5, with examples of how to make old code compatible with standard C++.
    There is no compiler version 7. Perhaps you are thinking of the Sun Studio release. There is a Sun Studio 7 (containing C++ 5.4), but it is End Of Life, no longer available for purchase, and is not supported on Solaris 10. The recent releases are these:
    Sun Studio 11, C++ 5.8, supports Solaris 8, 9, 10
    Sun Studio 12, C++ 5.9, supports Solaris 9, 10, Open Solaris, Linux
    Sun Studio 12 update 1, C++ 5.10, supports Solaris 10, Open Solaris, Linux
    (Sun Studio 12 update 1 should be released next week. Watch this forum for an announcement.)
    Please run the command
    CC -V
    to find out your compiler version.
    When compiling on Solaris, 32-bit compilation is the default. You don't get 64-bit compilation unless you ask for it, via the -xarch option on older compilers, or the -m64 option on current compilers.

  • Open command in Terminal

    When I try to open a folder from Terminal using the open command, instead of a Finder window opening for the folder, another Terminal window opens up with contents like the following:
    *Last login: Sat Nov 14 16:14:45 on ttys001*
    *jt-imac:~ terrator$ /Users/terrator/Music ; exit;*
    *-bash: /Users/terrator/Music: is a directory*
    logout
    *\[Process completed\]*
    In addition, I get the same symptom when I try to open folders from the Dock and Spotlight so I think the problems are related.
    I have done the following in trying to resolve this problem:
    1. Repair permissions and repair disk with Disk Utility using the Installation DVD after booting from it.
    2. Repair LaunchServices using Onyx
    3. Created a test user to see if this user has the same problem. No, the problem doesn't happen in this user.
    4. Deleted the com.appl.terminal.plist and some other plist files.
    5. Reinstalled Snow Leopard on top of my existing installation.
    None of those attempts have resolved the problem.
    Anyone has any ideas on how to resolve this problem?

    For Terminal.app I don't see anything with name "Folder" but I see one with roles "Editor":
    The Terminal does not execute anything. It is a character terminal emulator that is connected to pseudo (fake) serial terminal device (/dev/pty**)
    The other side of that pty device is attached to an independent process that happens to be running a shell of some kind (default being the bash shell).
    The shell will create child processes on demand and run commands requested by the user. Any text send to standard out or standard error by the shell or any of the children processes started by the shell, will be sent to the pty and the Terminal will read the other side of the pty and display the text in the Terminal window.
    The Terminal will also listen to the keyboard, and send any text you type to the pty where the shell or a child process created by the shell will read the other side of the pty and do what you tell it via the keyboard.
    That is the Terminal's job. communicate through this fake serial device. It does not execute commands. I knows nothing about Folders, nor files, nor TYPE/CREATOR fields, nor file type suffixes. Just reads text you type, and displays text sent back from the shell or its child processes.

    Ah, this is the first mention you have made of an Adobe product. Now,

    If you can describe in detail what you are doing with Adobe products
