Reading ctrl/alt keystrokes

I am writing a simple command line application
i have a text menu and would like to navigate with ctrl + letter keystrokes
e.g.
ctrl + r
will call a retrieve mail method
ctrl + s
will call sendmail method
also i would like to know each time the user presses backspace so i can delete the last character of a string that has already been printed to the screen
if you could point me in the right direction i would be very happy
regards,
val

sorry, by text menu i mean it is a command line client
i use:
               System.out.println("****************");
               System.out.println("Enter selection:");
               System.out.println("1. (S)end");
               System.out.println("2. (R)eceive");
               System.out.println("3. (Q)uit");
               System.out.println("****************\n");
so i want to read ctrl/alt keystrokes from a command line, i am not using a gui

    Suddenly today, about 9 hours ago, the laptop froze while surfing normally on the net.. After a reset - done as followed: holding power button till computer shuts down, and power on again - the computer wouldn't start windows again, and only gives the message:

    And will repeat the message after booting up with HP logo, and not enter Windows, time and time again if you press C+A+D
    I've tried recovery system, but that didn't work, and I'ved tried CHKDSK and it found and said it repaired some errors but it still happens.
    I then ran the start-up-test and in the end I got Failure ID 90DX6C-56S5S1-9XL03f-60S403 on Hard Disk 1.
    I tried to Google it, and no results.
    No recent system updates or anything new installed in a few weeks.

    Hi,
    It would look like the Hard Drive is failing/failed, but try running the following test from the bios menu as it can provide a more meaningful error code.
    Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive.  Post back with the details of any error messages.

  • HP Elitebook 8560w Won't Boot UP -- Disk Read Error Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart

    Hello. I have an Elitebook 8560w, that won't boot up. The screen says "Disk Read Error Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart".  The screen isn't all black...there are some random colored square pixels with a random flashing !, but it's mostly black.
    I've run the diagnostics and the F4 Hard Disk Test has passed everytime I've run it. I can hear the hard drive running, so mechanically it's okay (not sure on the logic side).
    The F3 Run-in Test fails under the Memory Test, it reads "Run-in test failed - Failed Memory Address 0x76B99000 Pattern expected - 0XFEFFFF Pattern Read - OxFFFFFF
    I tried a new 4GB DDDR RAM (removed the old one), and it hasn't helped. I should add before I changed RAM, it failed memory test and said "Disk Not Found".
    That made me think it was the hard drive, but the hard drive test has always passed.
    Any help would be appreciated. I'm lost. I have a new drive and ram coming from HP, but hoping I can salvage info on HDD.
    Also...the computer was set up with Windows 7 as new, but my company reimages everyone's computer and installs XP. So I'm not sure running the HP CD (assuming I can find it) would even help.

    Disk read failure and disk not found are classic signs of a hard drive failure. The memory failed the test, so it looks like this had two issues at once.
    The good news is that the right parts are on their way. If you want to save your data, do not use the recovery disks for the system. They will wipe the hard drive if it is still functional for them.
    With regards to retrieving your data, have you talked to the IT team yet? Most IT departments have a process for data retrieval on company equipment.
    If they do not have a process setup to do that, then you could try getting a notebook hard drive external enclosure. They usually run fairly cheap for a basic enclosure and that is enough to connect the hard drive externally to a different computer using a USB cable to copy data from it. This would work provided they do not encrypt the hard drive. If they do encrypt it, contact the IT team for their process as encryption limits the methods that are available.

  • HP g7 Laptop - "A Read Disk Error Has Occured - Use Ctrl Alt Delete to restart"

    I recently ran into a problem with my HP g7 Laptop. Purchased from Fry's less than 8 months ago.
    The issue i ran into is - when turning on the Laptop
    1st the monitor did not appear to come on...but it had its just that the montior was not
    showing illuminence...
    i ran into the DOS message:
    "A read disk error has occured
    Use ctrl alt delete to restart"
    which i did but did not work. I took apart the laptop to examine the hard drive and based on visual review did not appear to be damaged. Though I was shocked to see the hard drive is a SEAGATE product! which i have found to be a NOT RELIABLE hard drive product. I feared the worst knowing i had lost what I had saved and backed up on the C/D drive portion of the Hard Drive. Using a Flashlight to see what appeared on the monitor, I was able to perform the HP Recovery options on the computer but each option ended with the computer replying to the effect the it could not detect or there was no hard drive or c: - anything...which confused me because why was the laptop allowing to performing the recovery options. The last option i tried was to restore laptop to original factory settings. When it completed and I click the button for the system to restart the next error message i received was that "BOOTMRG missing - use ctrl alt delete to restart"
    which again did not work.
    Can you please bottom line it for me...have i experienced a HD crash and if so how can i know if this is covered under manufacture warrenty? It is upsetting to know that only after 8months of having this product, which i have been very happy with, until now, that the HD experiences a crash. none of the reviews for this product that i have read indicates this problem occuring!
    if this is a HD crash, also i am going to have to purchase a new HD correct, if not covered under warrenty?
    please help! spending over $600 for the Laptop and it only lasting a little over 8 months is not acceptable!
    Sincerely
    Frustrated Customer

    Hi admiral74,
    Call in and speak to a customer service rep. That will be the only way to know if it is still covered by warranty.
    Good luck!

    Hi,
    This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1207 provides tips that will resolve issues causing this message to appear with iPhones and iPods.
    Make sure the iPhone is directly connected to a high-speed USB2 port on the PC, using the cable that came with it.

    I'm using kdm, kde. Even at kdm (before login), these keystrokes does not work. So, I think that the problem is with some wrong configuration with X, but I don't know.
    I don't understood your second question 'show us where that keystroke is defined'. These keystrokes are pressed in KDM or KDE and don't work.

  • Disable Window keys ALT+TAB, CTRL+ALT+DEL

    Hello i am developing an application in which i need to catch the ALT+TAB and CTRLALT+DEL key events and handle it in my own way.
    The default action of showing the next window or the task manager should not take place.
    In the event handler i have given
    eventName.consume();
    also.But the default handling is also done.
    How do i stop the default action from being done?

    Windows will not allow any application to catch the CTRL+ALT+DEL keystroke. In Windows NT-kernel OSes, this keystroke brings up a menu which, among other things, allows the user to change his or her password. If an application could intercept CTRL+ALT+DEL, it could present itself in such a way as to look just like that dialog. Then, if a user typed his or her password into that dialog, the program could log or transmit that password plaintext, severely violating security.
    All sorts of exploits like that would be possible. This is why you can't block system keystrokes.
    Is there any particular reason you need to override this behavior? Perhaps we can help you find another solution to whatever problem made you decide you wanted to catch those keystrokes in the first place.

  • Left ctrl+alt+up arrow issue

    Have a rather custom setup, believe this to be a BIOS bug.
    When the Fn and Ctrl keys are swapped in BIOS, Left CTRL+ALT+UP arrow doesn't do anything unless or until you release either CTRL or ALT.  At that point it sends a single keypress event with no repeat.  To send another, you have to release and re-press all three keys down again and release ctrl or alt again.  Rather annoying on Linux with multiple workspaces and switching them with ctrl+alt+up/down
    Right CTRL+ALT+UP works fine.  Any combination works fine such as left CTRL and right ALT and up, or switch them.  It's just when you use left ctrl and left alt and up that it doesn't send anything.
    Left ctrl+alt+down/left/right all work fine - it's only the up key that doesn't send keypress events.  Also works fine with an external keyboard.
    I run Linux on my twist, and debugging with xev or even just cat'ing the keyboard input device shows no keystroke sent upon hitting the up arrow while holding down left ctrl and left alt.  So this isn't a software issue by any means.

    You are not alone, bad news is that it's not a Twist issue, affects several models and some quite old too...

  • Photoshop CC for PC - ctrl-alt-arrow key Does Nothing

    I installed Photoshop CC on a new PC, and the ctrl-alt-arrow keystroke does nothing. It used to shrink the marquee around pixels and move the selection by 1 pixel. Now it does nothing. Using shift-ctrl-alt-arrow shrinks the marquee around pixels and moves the selection by 10 pixels, which is what it's supposed to do. Any help is appreciated.

    I'm re-reading your posts, and I'm guessing you started having this problem when you installed on the new PC.
    What I'm thinking is that unchecking the hotkeys is not enough, the hotkey utility may be still be "trapping" the ctrl-alt-arrow keystroke.
    I decided to check this for myself.  First I open the task manager in Windows 7. and saw a process called "igfxHK.exe"  I ended that process and started Photoshop and then tried ctrl-alt-arrow and to my surprise, that does work.  igfxHK = Intel Graphics HotKey.
    Now the next trick is to block it from loading in the first place. I guess you could try to move or rename it. I don't want to ask you to adjust entries in the Registry yet. I have to go in a few minutes.
    From this article: Ctrl+Alt+Arrow key no longer working — Photoshop for Windows — ClearPS.com
    "The good news is that (as far as I can tell) hkcmd doesn't appear to be necessary as my graphics drivers are still functioning fine after I've removed it (I went into regedit, searched for hkcmd and deleted all entries). From searching online I see that hkcmd is known to conflict with other apps, so it seems that it's likely the cause rather than PhotoShop. Why PhotoShop and hkcmd suddenly started to cause conflicts after months of proper functioning, I don't know."   hkcmd is like igfxHK.

  • Tried installing Windows Vista, cancelled install and now it won't boot from the OEM Vista DVD, all i get is BOOTMGR is missing error... Ctrl Alt Del to restart and when i turn the computer on i get a blank screen and pressing C is not working to boot....

    Topic says it all...
    My friend started a installation of Windows Vista, but pulled out after deleting all partitions...
    So now i power it on, get a blank screen (seems a bit gray because of backlighting, should show the apple logo right?)...
    Then after like 15-20sec it will throw out a:
    BOOTMGR is missing
    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
    I have a OEM Windows Vista DVD in the drive, and i know... Windows 7 is better... but i'm not that fond of stealing software from Microsoft and i have 10 licenses for Vista...
    I have tried pressing C while booting up but it doesn't work...
    Does anyone here have a magic soloution for me, and no i will not install MacOS on it !!!

    Deleting Boot Camp partitions the conventional way will not work . You must use the Boot Camp Assistant to remove a Boot Camp partition. Here is a link to the guide.
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup_10.6.pdf
    The way to restart is to hold down the option/alt key during startup* and then selecting the Mac OS. If you have a valid Boot Camp install of Windows it would show up during this type of start up.
    * hold down immediately after pressing the power button and until the OS choice screen appears.
    To summarize.
    1 Use the above method to boot into Mac OS.
    2 Download the instructions and read them.
    3 Use Boot Camp Assistant to remove the partition.
    4 Pick your friends more carefully.

  • Revolve 810 G1 Unlock Computer when in Tablet Mode. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL or Windows Security Button

    1.  I have an Revolve 810 G1
         Running Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit).
    When I change the screen to Tablet Mode
      (Folding tablet over keyboard and using as tablet).
    I lock my computer.
    2.  What to know how to unlock without having to Open back up and use the CTL-Alt-DEL keys.
    When Locked screen shows:  Press CTRL-ALT-DEL or use the Windows Security Button to unlock this computer.
    I would like to use the Windows Button on the bottom of the screen
       (One Used in Windows 8 to change between Desktop and Metro) to Unlock screen And bring up on screen keyboard to put in my password.
    This is probably how it should work, but it does not work.
    Even bringing up the onscreen keyboard via the blue power button On the screen to Ease Of Access does not work.
    The CLT-ALT-DEL on the on screen keyboard will not unlock the screen.
    P.S.
    Where is that Windows Security Button when you need it?
    Thanks,
    Rog

    If you are using Windows 7 (not Windows 8), you should be able to touch the Ease of Access button at the lower left of the screen, then select Type without the keyboard (On-screen keyboard). When the on-screen keyboard pops-up, press CTRL, then ALT, then DEL. You should get a password prompt; the on-screen keyboard will stay visible unless and until you close it.

  • Ctrl Alt Del and Task manager not working

    Hi, Ive been having a problem getting task manager to run at all. On a fresh reboot, if I use the ctrl alt del function the according screen will come up like normal, and I will click on task manager. It bring me back to my desktop and nothing pops up.
    Its not running in my task bar or anything. Then if I try to use the ctrl alt del function again, nothing happens. Ive tried running task manager straight from the start menu, but then I get an error saying that the version of that file is not compatible with
    the version of windows I am running, which is 64 bit W7. It just started happening on my system a few days ago and I have changed nothing the past few days. I have tried to do a system restore, but to my idiocy, I did not know I needed to manually create restore
    points. So I can only restore to yesterday which would fix nothing. I have run antivirus and anti spyware programs and they have shown no problems and my hard drive only has a 1% disk fragmentation. Is there a way to uninstall and re download a 64 bit compatible
    version of the windows 7 task manager? Or is there a separate reason why it is not working? Thankyou

    Also try it By Registry Editor :
    Start --> Run --> regedit --> ok
    Then
    Hive: HKEY_CURRENT_USER
    Key: Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
    Name: DisableTaskMgr
    Type: REG_DWORD
    Value: 0=Disablethis key, that is Don't Disable, Enable TaskManager
    Regards,
    MCP | MCTS | MCITP
    The first fix did not work, I tried doing the second one but there is no system folder in
    Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
    The only one its showing is an explorer folder.

  • Ctrl/Alt Keys not Working in Parallels

    Hi,
    I'm running Illustrator CS6 using Parallels Desktop 8 and Windows 7. It appears that the ctrl/alt keys do not work. Has anyone found a solution? I've tried resetting my preferences and restarting my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciaed.

    Although this is an old thread, I also seem to be having the same sort of issues with Illustrator CS2 in Snow Leopard running under Parallels Desktop 9.
    Re. the proposed solution, there does not seem to be a 'Virtual Machine -> Configure -> Options -> Advanced -> Optimize modifier keys for games' option in Desktop 9 - or I've not found it.
    I will pursue this in the Parallels forums, but if anyone here has found a solution, I'd be interested to hear it.
