Reading flat files with variable names in SSIS

I have a ssis package that reads a flat file from a network drive (using a flat file connection manager) and loads the data into sql server tables. I have this working on a fixed file name, however in reality the file name will not be the
same from run to run.      Essentially, I need to check a folder each day and if there is a file there with a certain prefix (for example, 'datafile'), I need to process this file(s). In other words, if there is a file in the folder
called datafilexyz, my process needs to read it in and process it.    If there are files named datafileabc, datafiledef, and testfile123, I need to read in and process the datafileabc and datafiledef flat files.
I'm not sure how to make this work.     I haven't had any SSIS training, just what I can find on the internet and looking at existing SSIS packages (I haven't found any that do what I'm trying to do here) so I'm kind of lost.
Any help is appreciated.

this is working well.    How can I, after loading each flat file, move the flat file to an archive folder?    I'm trying to use a file system task, but doing something wrong.    I created and reference
an archive folder connection manager in the destination connection, and reference the original folder connection manager for the source connection, but get 'sourcepath is not valid on operation movefile'.    I think a file system task is what
is needed (within the foreach loop after the data load for each flat file), but I'm not doing something correctly.
Sounds fine except for one thing. Did you assign the filename variable to connection string property of the source file connection manager used by file system task?
Also it should be existing file option you should choose for
source connection and existing folder for destination.

  • How to handle flat file with variable delimiters in the file sender adapter

    Hi friends,
    I have some flat files in the ftp server and hope to poll them into XI, but before processing in XI, I hope to do some content conversion in the file sender adapter, according to the general solution, I just need to specify the field names, field seperator, end seperator, etc. But the questions is:
    The fileds in the test data may have different amount of delimiters (,), for example:
    ORD01,,,Z4XS,6100001746,,,,,2,1
    OBJ01,,,,,,,,,,4,3
    Some fileds only have 1 ',' as the delimiter, but some of them have multiple ','.
    How can I handle it in the content conversion?

  • SSIS project - read multiple flat files with different formats

    hi all,
    i need to import multiple flat files with different formats into different tables of the sql server database and not able to figure out the best way out in ssis to do so...
    please advise the possible methods in ssis to do so and if possible the process which can be dynamic as file names or columns might change in future.

    Hi AK1987,
    To import flat files with dynamic columns, we can use Script Task inside a Foreach Loop Container to parse the first row of the flat file to get the columns names and save them into a .NET variable, then, we can create “Create Table” script based on this
    variable, and then store the script into a SSIS package variable. After that, we create a staging table based on the package variable, load the flat file data to the staging table. Eventually, we load data from the staging table to the destination table. For

  • Using ssis import a multiple flat files with different mappings

    I have an scenario for import a file
    20 different flat file source and having XML mapping document in a table.
    get files from that path(i have path and file name extension in table)
    i have map this file based on the file name extension in dynamically
    create a 20 different staging table based on mapping in dynamically
    kindly help for this

    Hi Karthick,
    As Arthur said, if you don't want to hard code the data flow, you need to read XML from the SQL Server table and use Script Task to implement the dynamic columns mapping. To read XML from a SQL table, you can refer to:
    http://blog.sqlauthority.com/2009/02/13/sql-server-simple-example-of-reading-xml-file-using-t-sql/
    In the Script Task, we need to parse the first row of the flat file to get the columns information and save that to a .NET variable. Then, the variable will be used to create the query that will be used to create SQL table. For more information, please see:

  • Read a file with a variable=counter : NAMEFILE001,NAMEFILE002..

    Hello,
    I would need your councils.
    I can read a logical file on my server(logical example of name: NAMEFILE) with function FILE_GET_NAME.
    But I would like to be able to read a file with a counter i.e.
    the first time: to read NAMEFILE001;
    the second time read NAMEFILE002;
    the third time read NAMEFILER003...
    How made you that?
    With function FILENAME_EXIT _?
    But, where do I put the variable = counter? In a table...?
    Thank you in advance of your answer
    Servane

    Hi Servane,
    You could also do the following:
    in transaction FILE you set up the physical path name as follows:
    /<i>path</i>/.../<FILENAME><PARAM_1>
    then you call the function FILE_GET_NAME:
      CALL FUNCTION 'FILE_GET_NAME'
           EXPORTING
             LOGICAL_FILENAME        = W_LOGICAL_FILENAME
             PARAMETER_1             = W_FILENUMBER
          IMPORTING
               FILE_NAME               = THEFILE
           EXCEPTIONS
                FILE_NOT_FOUND          = 1
                OTHERS                  = 2.
    This will equally construct the name/counter as you wish.
    AND, if I am not wrong, since the system does it, you will not have to worry about putting the last counter value away in the DB.
    cheers,
    Phil

  • Error when opening XLSX file with Excel 2003 SP3, file does open but in read only mode with temporary name

    I am using Excel 2003 SP3 and have the Office 2007 compatibility pack installed.  When I open Office 2007 formatted Excel files (XSLX) directly in Windows Explorer, I receive the following error if I do not have Excel already opened:
    "Windows cannot find '<path to file>'.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.  To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search."
    Even though I receive the error, the file does open; however, it opens in Read Only mode with a name such as "Xl0000024.xls".  The number seems to increment up each time it happens.
    Now here is the strange part.  If I have Excel already open and try to open the file in Windows Explorer, the file opens fine in Modify mode with no error and with the correct file name.
    I Googled the error I was getting and found KB211494.  It says I should uncheck the box in Options on the General tab that says "Ignore other applications", but this box is already unchecked in my case.  Any other ideas?  This is
    really frustrating as a small percentage of our company has upgraded to Office 2007 with the rest still on Office 2003.

    This may be a file association problem.  To solve that:
    In Windows 7:
    1. Right-click the file,
    2. Select "Open With"
    select [Your Program Here]
    3. Check always use this program.
    In Windows XP:
    1. Locate the file as you have described above
    2. Right click the file
    3. Select Open with from the pop-up menu
    4. Click Choose default program…
    5. Select Excel in the Recommended Programs box
    6. Check Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
    7. Click on OK.
    1.  Make Excel not available from Office 2007 listed under Programs and Features in Control Panel.
    2. Take a registry backup using the steps given here
    3. In the registry editor window expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and navigate to .xls right and delete it.
    4. Exit Registry Editor
    5. Undo Step 1 to make Excel available.
    6.  Restart the computer and verify it the issue is fixed.

  • SSIS - Import Multiple flat files with different metadata

    Hi ,
    I have set of flat files with different metadata structure, I would like to load them into staging tables.
    1. ) Can we load the flatfiles into the staging tables with out having multiple data flow task.
    2.) If possible , can we programmatically select the staging table based on the metadata of the flatfile and load them.
    Please advise.
    Thanks
    Thiya

    Nope in SSIS a data flow task needs to have a fixed metadata. So if your file metadata varies then best option would be use OPENROWSET syntax to pull the data and populate into your staging table. You may also use
    SELECT .. INTO StagingTable ... FROM OPENROWSET (...)
    syntax to create staging table at runtime based on the file metadata
    http://sqlmate.wordpress.com/2012/08/09/use-your-text-csv-files-in-your-queries-via-openrowset/
    If you want to do this in SSIS you need to create data flow dynamically using script task and build the metadata

  • Importing From Flat File with Dynamic Columns

    HI
    I am using ssis 2008,i have folder in which I have Four(4) “.txt” files each file will have 2 columns(ID, NAME). I loaded 4
    files in one destination, but today I receive one more “.txt” file here we have 3 columns (ID, NAME, JOB) how can I get a message new column will receive in source. And how can I create in extra column in my destination table dynamically …please help me

    Hi Sasidhar,
    You need a Script Task to read the names and number of columns in the first row of the flat file each time and store it in a variable, then create a staging table dynamically based on this variable and modify the destination table definition if one ore more
    new columns need to be added, and then use the staging table to load the destination table. I am afraid there is no available working script for your scenario, and you need some .NET coding experience to achieve your goal. Here is an example you can refer
    to:

  • Flat files data comma separated using SSIS.

    Hi,
    I have multiple flat files which come in comma separated columns. See example below :
    Customer Data
    CustID,FName,LName,Disease,Email,Phone
    12345,Xyz,Smit,Bronchitis, Asthma and fever,[email protected],80000000
    12346,Abc,Doe,fever Headache,[email protected],90000000
    12347,Klu,joe,Sugar, cough and fever,[email protected],12345678
    Please look at the ID's 12345 and 12347. The disease column has a internal comma space between. How do i remove the comma spaces in the disease column, so that it can be loaded from flat file to sql table using SSIS. ?
    Please help !
    Thanks

    Here is a full solution base on my post above (first option)
    1. create temp table (Give it a unique name):
    create table #T (Txt NVARCHAR(MAX))
    GO
    2. Insert all the data into temporary table. Each line in the text file, is a value for one column in a row in the table.
    -- I will jump to the table and use simple insert.
    -- If you have problem with step 1 then please inform us (this is simple bulk insert basically)
    insert #T (Txt) values
    ('1234435,Xyz,Stemit,Brfsdonchitis, Asthma and fever,[email protected],80000000'),
    ('12346,Agjdfjbc,Doge,fevhhhher Headsxdshhache,[email protected],90000000'),
    ('123447,Klu,joe,Sugar, cough and fever,[email protected],12345678')
    GO
    the result should be like this:
    Txt
    1234435,Xyz,Stemit,Brfsdonchitis, Asthma and fever,[email protected],80000000
    12346,Agjdfjbc,Doge,fevhhhher Headsxdshhache,[email protected],90000000
    123447,Klu,joe,Sugar, cough and fever,[email protected],12345678
    I use a SPLIT Function named Split_CLR_Fn. This is a CLR Split function that get input <string to split> and <string as delimiter,> and it return table with 2 columns ID, SplitData
    For example if you use: SELECT * from Split_CLR_Fn('text1,text2,text3,',') then you get result:
    ID SplitData
    1 Text1
    2 Text2
    3 Text3
    ** You can find in the internet several good functions, I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED NOT TO USE T-SQL FUNCTIONS but CLR FUNCTION. Check thi link to understand why:
    http://sqlperformance.com/2012/07/t-sql-queries/split-strings
    ** This is the best function that I know about and I use it, but I change the code a bit to return 2 columns and not just the SplitData as in this blog: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/adam_machanic/archive/2009/04/28/sqlclr-string-splitting-part-2-even-faster-even-more-scalable.aspx
    That's it :-) we are ready for the solution which is very simple
    Solution 1 (BAD solution but easy to write):
    select
    (select SplitData from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,',') where ID = 1) CustID,
    (select SplitData from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,',') where ID = 2) FName,
    (select SplitData from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,',') where ID = 3) LName,
    STUFF((select ',' + SplitData from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,',') where ID > 3 and ID < (select MAX(ID) from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,',')) - 1 for XML path('')), 1 , 1,'') Disease,
    (select SplitData from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,',') where ID = (select MAX(ID) from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,',')) - 1) Email,
    (select SplitData from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,',') where ID = (select MAX(ID) from Split_CLR_Fn(Txt,','))) Phone
    from #T
    GO
    Solution 2: better in this case since the format is constant (this is the solution I wrote about above)
    ;With MyCTE as (
    select
    Txt,
    SUBSTRING(Txt, 1, CHARINDEX(',', Txt, 1) - 1) as CustID
    , SUBSTRING(
    Txt
    ,CHARINDEX(',', Txt, 1) + 1 -- I start from the end of preview len
    , CHARINDEX(',', Txt, CHARINDEX(',', Txt, 1)+1)- CHARINDEX(',', Txt, 1) - 1
    ) as FName
    , SUBSTRING(
    Txt
    ,CHARINDEX(',', Txt, CHARINDEX(',', Txt, 1)+1)+1 -- I start from the end of preview len
    , CHARINDEX(',', Txt, CHARINDEX(',', Txt, CHARINDEX(',', Txt, 1)+1)+1) - CHARINDEX(',', Txt, CHARINDEX(',', Txt, 1)+1) - 1
    ) as LName
    , RIGHT(Txt, CHARINDEX(',', REVERSE(Txt), 1) - 1) as Phone
    , RIGHT(LEFT(Txt, Len(Txt) - Len(RIGHT(Txt, CHARINDEX(',', REVERSE(Txt), 1) - 1)) - 1), CHARINDEX(',', REVERSE(LEFT(Txt, Len(Txt) - Len(RIGHT(Txt, CHARINDEX(',', REVERSE(Txt), 1) - 1)) - 1)), 1) - 1) as Email
    from #T
    select CustID,FName,LName, Phone, Email, SUBSTRING(Txt, Len(CustID) + Len(FName) + Len(LName) + 4, Len(Txt) - Len(Email) - LEN(Phone) - Len(CustID) - Len(FName) - Len(LName) - 5) as Disease
    from MyCTE
    I hope that this is useful :-)

  • Too many flat files with different formats.

    Hi gurus,
    i have a headache problems. that is follows:
    We will upload data from flat files,but you know there are about 100 .xls files and with different formats.
    and as you know  the datasource of the flat file must correspond to every fields of the flat file.
    but you know there are 100 flat files and if we donot do any optimise,we will create about 100 transformation and 100 datasource to meet our requirements.
    but that seems impossible.
    is there any good idea to decrease the number of transfomation ?

    Hi AK1987,

  • How to parse a flat file with C#

    I need to parse a flat file with data that looks like

    You get the idea. Anyway, I'd like to just used a derived column and move on except I need to put a line number on each row as it comes by so the end looks like,
    1,01,1235,555
    2,02,2135,558
    3,16,156,15614
    4,16,000,000

    line_number = row_number
    record_type = input.split.get the second data element
    data_point_1 = input.split.get the third data element
    row_number = row_number ++

  • Flat Files with BAM(Business Activity Monitoring)

    I am using Flat File in my receive location and i am getting XML File in my send location.
    Now I want to check the StartPortTime, EndPortTime with the help of BAM.
    But I am unable to get these values in BAM portal. Is it possible to track flat files(txt files)through BAM.
    Please provide me any solution as soon as possible.
    Thanks in advance !

    Hi Prakash,
    In related to your other forum post on similar question:
    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/a5fbff38-bff9-412a-bf02-9c0a816e52e2/flat-files-with-bam?forum=biztalkgeneral#4c53c118-fda3-44b7-8c42-5f65e034a813
    There is no difference to flat-file schema and standard schema in terms of BAM tracking.
    I understand that you were not able to see tracked data for flat-file schema in “BAM portal”. Can you try to see the data directly in BAM SQL-tables/view rather
    than through BAM portal? Try to query the SQL-view - “bam_YourActivityName_AllInstances” (replace YourActivityName with your activity name)
     order it by LastModified column. See whether your data from your flat-file has been tracked in the SQL-tables.
    If you still not able to view the data in the above SQL-view:
    Check event-log: check the eventlog for any warning. Generally BAM errors
    are logged as warning.
    Check
    TDDS_FailedTrackingData:
    Check
    TDDS_FailedTrackingData table. The TDDS_FailedTrackingData table gets populated whenever there is a tracking failure
    TDDS_FailedTrackingData.
    Enable TDDS: I hope you have enabled
    BizTalk Host/Host Instance configured to run
    “Tracking Data Decode Service (TDDS)" in your environment, because you can see data from other Receive Locations.
    Check deployment & restart host instance/IIS:
    Then only thing I would doubt is about your deployment of Tracking Profile of the flat-file schema. Ensure the Tracking Profile for the flat-file schema has been deployed properly.
    Also ensure you have restarted your host instance or IIS (if it’s under isolated host) for your deployment to take effect.

  • Flat file with chinese characters

    Hi all,
    I am working on a solution to map a file with this structure (not xml):
    //.comment 1
    0~keyh2..hn~
    0~it1it2..itn~key
    0~it1it2..itn~key
    //.comment 2
    0~keyh2..hn~
    0~it1it2..itn~key
    0~it1it2..itn~key
    0~it1it2..itn~key
    This is my conversion setup
    recordser.structure = comment,1,header,1,item,*
    recordset.sequence = variable
    keyFieldName = key
    comment.fieldSeparator = .
    comment.fieldStructure = key.comment
    comment.keyFieldValue = //
    header.fieldSeparator = ~~
    header.beginSeparator = 0~~
    header.endSeparator = ~~
    header.fieldStructure = 0~keyh2..hn~
    header.keyFieldValue = 0
    item.fieldSeparator = ~~
    item.beginSeparator = 0~~
    item.fieldStructure = 0~it1it2..itn~key
    item.keyFieldValue = 1
    The problem now is that this file come from Chinese system and it is provide with chinese letters (looks like 2 bytes per letter). When I provide character encoding as ISO-2022 then adapter shows exception:
    java.io.UnsupportedEncodingException
    when I try to process it without passing any encoding then the exception is:
    more elements in file csv structure than field names specified
    Is there anyone who can help me with these?

    I think it is something wrong with the File content conversion parameters parameters.
    You can avoid comment 1 and comment 2 by using the parameter Document offset.Follow this link for that:
    <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/2c/181077dd7d6b4ea6a8029b20bf7e55/content.htm">http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/2c/181077dd7d6b4ea6a8029b20bf7e55/content.htm</a>.
    I think you didn't specify the field names in the File Content Conversion parameters.
    Follow these two weblogs for the File Content Conversion parameters:

    Hope it helps.

  • Flat File with unequal spacing as delimiter

    I am trying to import multiple flat files with unequal spacing as delimiter in sql server using SSIS 2012, however when I import the file, all the data in the file is imported into only one column. None of the predefined delimiters in SSIS works with the
    way the flat file was configured. I read that I can use the script component in SSIS 2012 to create the additional columns and somehow manipulate the file using the spacing to assign a new delimiter, such as a common, but I can't find any resources on it.
    Anyone have any experience/knowledge of this situation can provide me with an example or some resources that can help me to solve this situation?
    Example of file format:
    26   SM FRIES         0      1     0       0.00        0.0
    30   PEPSI               0    22     0       0.00        0.0

    Looks like a fixed width file to me seeing the data posted
    If you can determine the width of the columns then you can use fixed width (or ragged right) option in flat file connection manager and identify the lengths of the individual fields to get values out.
    See this example

  • Interface output file : tab limited vs flat file with fixed length

    hey guys,
    any idea on difference b/w to file type : flat file with fixed length or tab limited file
    thanks

    Tab Delimited:
    Two Field are seperated by a TAB
    eg. SANJAY    SINGH
    First field is First Name and Second is Sir Name.
    Nth field will be after N -1 tab
    Fixed Length:
    Every field has a fixed starting position and length
    eg. SANJAY     SINGH
    Here First field start from Position 1 and has lenght 10 and 2nd field start from 11th postion and has lenght 10.
    Fixed Length -> The lenght of each field is fixed, while in tab delimited the lenght of field is not fixed but we know it ends when the Seperatot (Tab) is encountered.
