Reading in/writing out escape characters from/to file

I am trying to read in a large file which has many escape/special charaters (e.g. /, double quote (" ") etc.). I need to read them as they are and then write them out in a separate file as they were in the original file (e.g. if there was a double quote in the original file, I would have to keep the double quote in the output file)
Now my question is: how can we tell the BufferedReader and FileWriter not to treat those characters to be escape characters?
Thanks

Now my question is: how can we tell the
BufferedReader and FileWriter not to treat those
characters to be escape characters?AFAIK, you don't need to do anything special. BR and FW already do that the right way.
Did you try the standard approach?

• Stop escaped characters from resolving within String class.

Hello,
Is it possible to stop escaped characters from resolving within the String class?
For example, I define a character array,
char[] c = {'0','\\','n'}
and I want to create a String based on this exact sequence (0\n). However, when I call the String constructor String(char[]), it resolves the \n sequence into the newline character, creating a String of length 2 not 3.
I'm not very familiar with the innards of the Java compiler (does "xyz" translate to char[]{'x','y','z'}?), so maybe this is something very basic.
Does anyone know if there is a flag that can be set somehow before I create a String instance (it appears that no String constructor supports this kind flag)?
Or perhaps is there a method in the standard Java release that escapes all escape characters in a character array...? I'm curious if there is a simpler way (like a flag), because the method approach seems superfluous.
Thanks,
Brien

What do you mean?char[] c = {'0', '\\', 'n'};
String s = new String(c);
System.out.println(s);does give the string 0\n...
And by the way, it's not the String class that transforms \n to the linefeed character, it is the compiler..

Hi again Greg,
I have just been adapting your idea for encountering
occasional escaped characters within a body of "normal" text, eg
something like
hellô sunšine
Now, the handy String.fromCharCode(charCode) call works a
dream if instead of the above I have
hellô sunšine
Do you know if there is an equivalent call that takes the
named entities rather than the numeric ones? Clearly I can just do
some text substitution to get the mapping, but this means rather
more by-hand work than I had hoped. However, this is definitely a
step in a useful direction for me.
Thanks,
Richard
PS hoping that the web page won't simply outguess me and
replace all the above! Basically, the first line uses named
entities and the second the equivalent numbers...

• How to make iTunes read the song's name/singer from the file's name itself?

Hi everyone,
So I have this file with songs from everywhere. I spent quite some time now to make sure that the structure of each file's name is as such : "Singer - Song name", hoping that everything would be read by iTunes accordingly. However, either iTunes read it well, or it didn't read it at all ("Singer - Song name" appearing in Title alone), or iTunes read the "media" of the file (ie. what the guy I downloaded it from wrote for it in the Preferences, which usually is in capital letters or with a bunch of weird underscores). As I'm OCD and need everything to be neat, I'm highly tensed right now. I really want everything to be neat and clear!
So, how do I make sure that iTunes reads the files' names such that it knows the structure is "Singer - Song name"? Thanks.

iTunes doesn't use file names to determine how music appears in your library, Rather, it uses metadata that is split between:
data elements that are embedded within the media files
data elements that are included in the entries in the iTunes database
No amount of reorganization, renaming or other manipulation at the file level will make any difference to how songs will appear in iTunes. Using your example:
the value of the track number element is 1
the value of the artist element is "Elvis Presley"
the value of the song name element is "Blue Suede Shoes"
Depending on how you configure iTunes then the file name is either:
completely independent of iTunes (i.,e., the file containing this song could be xyz.mp3)
dependent on the metadata managed by iTunes, (i.e., when you have these two options set:
then iTunes will set the file name to be 1-01 Blue Suede Shoes.mp3 where:
the file is in a folder called "Elvis Presley" (the name of the album)
that folder is in one called "Elvis Presley" (the name of the artist) which is in iTunes Media\Music
Going back to your question "How to make iTunes read the song's name/singer from the file's name" the answer is simple - you can't, as this is not how iTunes works. There are some third-party utilities that you can use to set some metadata element values based on parsing of file names which might be a useful first step. However, to use iTunes effectively you should really forget about / ignore file names - manage your media using appropriate metadata and allow iTunes to look after file names behind the scenes.

Hi Howard,
thank you for your post.
I actually new about the problems with the jvm version. Still i wanted to ask, cause there are different reports on this `java problems` and even though the 1.4.2_08 seems to be the best version (by the way this version is not to be downloaded any longer *sig*), there are people getting all installed with other versions. I couldn't find any regularity in the misbehavior of the servers while installing.
I finally achieved and got everything working ... but very slow. Loading the adminui or BAM features takes very long time (over one minute). Have you already had this delay. Any hint?

• Importing special characters from text file

My project requires me to import a text file into a dynamic
text field by using the loadVariables() function. My problem is
that the text file contains a ampersign "&" . It seems that the
ampersign stops the rest of the text from being imported into my
flash movie. Is there a special character or escape character that
I can use to allow me to import the ampersign?
I've tried using the & and setting my dynamic text
field to HTML. No luck. Oh.. I'm using flash MX :(
Any ideas?

Hey I've run into this problem and found the solution lies
with JavaScript which can read the text just fine and then parse it
back to Flash as escape characters:
//JavaScript code:
var origText = 'blah blah & then i did this & then
blah blah";
var newText = String(escape(origText).replace(new
RegExp('\\+', 'g'), '%2b'));
FlashWin.sendText(newText); // << this is a reference
to a flash window with ExternalInterface enabled
// end
However, I was using HttpRequest in JS to get my original
data. So this method is dependent on something other than Flash to
retrieve the original text (with ampersands).
I really hope they fix this bug in the future, it can drive
you nuts....

• How can I read only a line of text from a file, line by line using Scanner?

Here's the code I currently have for a program that finds a keyword from numerous files and prints every line in every file that has that keyword. The keyword is indicated by the first parameter in a command line and the files are every parameter after that. Right now, with the code I have, the program will not print multiple lines of each file if they contain the keyword. I am trying to solve this problem by figuring out a way to have a loop continue until an \n EOL character is found. I am not sure how to do this though. Here's the portion of code that I would like to change to do this. I need to add a condition somewhere after in.hasNext() I think to stop when it it hits a /n.:
while (in.hasNext()) {

DataInputStream has another method that does what you want.

• Read to get the last line from a File

Hi
I am sending in a clarification , hoping that I get an efficient solution from the group, should somebody have come across this scenario and implemented.
How to read or get the last line from a text file , which usually have a no of records, without actually reading or looping through all the lines
I know there is some solution with the RandomAccessFile, but given there can be some encoding issues or so.
Please let me know if somebody have implemented the same.
Thanks n advance

The character encoding could, indeed, be an issue especially with UTF-8. I think what I'd do is to create a byte array with the encoded, expected end of line sequence in it and work on the file in bytes. For example, seek to the last 100 bytes of the file, read those bytes and look for an EOL sequence backwards. If not found read the previous 100, 200, 400 bytes etc. until you do find an end of line. Then seek to after the EOL and read normally. Remember an EOL sequence might cross a boundary.
UTF-8 would be a problem, especially with a unix format file because you might mistake part of a multi-byte sequence for '\n'. To be reliable on UTF-8 you'd need to go back three characters looking for sequence start markers (has the previous character got the top bit set, or the one before that the first two bits set, or the one before that the top three bits). Or you could just react to an encoding exception and try another position.
