Reading only a subset of keys from a map

Hello all, I would appreciate a pointer with regard to maps. Here is my (simplified) requirement:
I have a list of key and value parings that currently reside in a hashmap. The map looks something like this;
Key ---------- Value
Monday ---------- Doctor appointment
Monday ---------- Grocery shopping
Tuesday ---------- Hair appointment
Tuesday ---------- Visit grandma
Tuesday ---------- Make car payment
Wednesday ---------- Paint garage
Wednesday ---------- Dinner with George
My actual requirement has different terminology, but the principle is the same.
The key value is not unique, and the map will eventually have many thousands of entries. I need to read through my list very often in my application, and I want to be able to read only those entries for a given day and no others as this will significantly hurt the performance if I do.
Could someone kindly give me a thought or two on the best (and fastest) way to achieve what I need. I have searched various sites looking for a clue, but I can't see anything, which is odd as I would have thought this was a common need.
Many thanks in advance,
Steve

Maybe, you should have a look at the two links below,
which will lead you to in-memory/embedded RDBMSes
that easily can be integrated into your application.
As they hold data in-memory, queries will be really
quick. I did not check for persisting to a foreign
DBMS, though. And neither of them is an OODBMS.
http://www.h2database.com
http://hsqldb.sourceforge.net/
Thanks - I will take a look at the links.
While I am here, I wonder if anyone could validate the approach I have taken for IO (from any source):
For each object that needs to be persisted, I have create a second class called (ClassObjectName)List. This List class handles all IO, and provides methods to get and put objects and object lists. Whenever my app needs to do some IO, it does this through the List methods. This seems to be working very well for me, and completely hides the database implementation from the rest of the app, which is nice as the database may change in the future.
As much as I like the way this approach works, this is my first real Java project, so I would be very interested to ear any views or alternatives from the experienced developers.
Thanks to all and best regards,
Steve

  • BUG: ADF BC read-only VO with no Key attrs + af:table

    Hello all,
    I've got a bug to report - quite easily reproducable with the HR demo schema. To see it:
    1). Create a new application from the ADF BC + Faces template
    2). Create a read-only VO, use "SELECT employee_id, first_name from employees" and order by "employee_id" - take the defaults for everything - do not set any key attributes.
    3). Create an AM, add the VO to it's data model. Turn off AM pooling in the configuration.
    4). Create a JSPX page. Drag-drop the VO from the data control palette as an ADF read-only table - with selection
    5). Bind the actionlistener of the "submit" button to a backing bean method that just system.out.println's something.
    Now, run the app. Try selecting an employee from the first page (records 1-10) and clicking submit - it works. Now, scroll to the second set of records, select one and click submit - no message appears - the action listener is never called. No errors are thrown.
    Workaround: ensure the VO has employee_id selected as a key attribute.
    My code is at the bottom for reference.
    Cheers,
    John

  • Display read only field in table / form from another vo

    i came across couple of scenarios where i had to bring a field in a table / from from other vo than on which most fields in table / form were based. in all cases i had to display the field from another vo as read only and there was only one record in other vo which was related to previous vo in table / form. for this i created a view accessor and created a soc with model driven lov. the problem with this is that first element alwasy shows blank in soc. how can i display the filled soc with first element populated and read only in this scenario. i tried alternatively with groovy expressions but other people in team said it is not good practice to use groovy expressions to fill fields in one VO from other VO. how can i acheive this requirement with soc component / lov / view accessors. is there any other alternative as well. jdev 11 1 1 5

    1) in the attribute of the VO select the 'List of values' node and edit the list attribute you see there; in the dialog select the UI Hints tad and make sure the checkmark for the 'Include "no Selection Item' is off.
    2) you can base a VO on to EO which are then joined via one or more attributes (association)

  • How Do I:  Fill a read-only field based on selections from 2 DDlists?

    Follow-up from issue:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2417876#2417876
    I have 2 drop-down lists...  "Department" and "SubDepartment"
    The selection in DDlist "Department" spawns a unique list in DDlist "SubDepartment"
    I select the proper items from both DDlists.
    When I do this, I want read-only text field "NameOnIDBadge" to be populated with a pre-defined entry.
    Example:
    In "Department" DDlist, select item "Finance & Administration"
    In "SubDepartment" DDlist, select item "Food Service" from the list that appears
    THEN:
    In read-only text field "NameOnIDBadge" the following predefined read-only text appears:  "Contract Food Serv."
    (Thanks to Paul, I already know how to make the selection in DDlist "Department"  affect the selection list in DDlist "SubDepartment"
    but I don't know how to make the selection of both DDlists create a new pre-defined entry in a text field.)
    I have attached a mockup of the file I am working with...

    I tried that but a few things went wrong.
    1. After I select "Food Service" in the second "SubDepartment" DDlist, a Javascript error message pops up (see attached), and I have to click it to make it go away.  Then the text "Contract Food Serv" appears in the text box.
    2. If I select a different value in the Department DDlist, the rawtext still remains in place... it should clear out.
    3. The raw text seems to be based on the selection of the SubDepartment DDlist only.  However, I need specific raw text to be generated based on the combination of BOTH DDlists.   (It could happen that a totally different Department DDlist could have the same item in its corresponding SubDepartment DDlist.  In that case, the rawtext would be completely different.)
    Correct example:
    Department DDlist = Finance & Administration
    SubDepartment DDlist = Food Service
    NameOnIDBadge = Contract Food Serv  <-- CORRECT
    Incorrect example:
    Department DDlist = Clinical Services
    SubDepartment DDlist = Food Service
    NameOnIDBadge = Contract Food Serv   <--  INCORRECT   (it might be something else)

  • Can a read-only snapshot site be refreshed from a read-only database?

    Hi,
    Here is the database configuration.
    Database 1: master site
    Database 2: has materialized views (read-only snapshot site)
    If DB1 becomes read-only, is it possible to refresh the materialized views in DB2? I was told that it is not possible because some m$log tables in DB1 need to be updated when the DB2 is refreshed . If it is DB1 is read-only, the meta data tables can not be updated so the refresh will fail.
    Does anybody have experience with a scenario like this?
    Thanks very much.

    Why do you need to put the database in read only mode anyway. Why not control "readability" through security, ie roles. Then it won't really matter.

  • Issue with read statement with one more key missing in mapping

    Hi All ,
    I have such data in two internals table :
    IT_bdc
    vbeln            posnr
    90000593     10
    90000576     10
    90000672     10
    90000672     20
    90000672     30
    it_konv
    kbetr          vbeln
    6250          90000576
    12160000          90000593
    500000          90000672
    600000          90000672
    700000          90000672
    My current program statement is :
    LOOP AT it_bdc.
    READ TABLE it_konv WITH KEY
          vbeln = it_bdocs-vbeln.
      currency =   it_konv-waers.
    endloop.
    as you can see the posnr is missing in it_konv how can i modify this read statement so
    that vbeln posnr from it_bdc should get correct kbetr from it_konv.
    Kindly help in this mapping.

    Hi
    sort it_konv by vbeln
    then
    loop at it_bdc.
    read table it_konv with key vbeln = it_bdc-vbeln binary search.
    if sy-subrc = 0.
    perform your logic/task.
    endif.
    endloop.
    also it depends what you want to do after reading it_konv.
    in my logic if there is a vbeln in it_konv which s present in it_bdc then sy-subrc will be 0
    and you can perform your logic.
    and if there will be no matching vbeln in it_konv then sy-subrc will not be 0.
    check the values in debugging.
    Thanks

  • How to protect read-only data in Swing app from tampering?

    First off I am new to cryptography and trying to find the best approach for a problem.
    We have a Swing application that uses xml-based template files to display complex forms and validate data entry. Based on the size and complexity of the forms it was deemed better to have a distributed stand-alone application instead of a web-based solution. However, we want to ensure users do not tamper with the template rules in order to pass the validation checks. All of the xml-based template files are distributed within a single jar file.
    The first thought was to build a list of check-sums of the template files and to compare the template to the approariate check-sum from within the list before loading a template. This would prevent the more casual user from tampering with the file but not someone knowledgeable in check-sum who could recalculate the CRC and update the list after making changes.
    Another thought was to use a private key to encrypt the CRC list before distribution and a public key to decrypt it during execution with the keys maintained in a keystore. However, once again, an adventurous user could weed through the obfuscated code to determine the password to the keystore, create a new keystore with the same password and use its private key to regenerate the CRC list from altered templates.
    I feel like there must be a simpler approach that will provide a bullet prove implementation. Any suggestions?

    I think you have to re-think your design.
    Whether you use Java, C#,C or C++ a hacker can look through the binary (class file, exe file etc) and after working out what is happening he can modify your code.
    It is my opinion that your best bet is to use client/server but even with that you cannot keep any private data or code on the client.
    You will still have to think about 'man-in-the-middle' and 'spoof site' attacks.

  • How can I read only a line of text from a file, line by line using Scanner?

    Here's the code I currently have for a program that finds a keyword from numerous files and prints every line in every file that has that keyword. The keyword is indicated by the first parameter in a command line and the files are every parameter after that. Right now, with the code I have, the program will not print multiple lines of each file if they contain the keyword. I am trying to solve this problem by figuring out a way to have a loop continue until an \n EOL character is found. I am not sure how to do this though. Here's the portion of code that I would like to change to do this. I need to add a condition somewhere after in.hasNext() I think to stop when it it hits a /n.:
    while (in.hasNext()) {
                        count++;
                        String nextWord = in.next();
                        lineOfText.add(nextWord);
                        if (nextWord.equals(keyword)) {
                            flag = true;
    import java.util.Scanner;
    import java.io.IOException;
    import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
    import java.io.FileInputStream;
    import java.io.PrintWriter;
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    public class Find {
        static ArrayList<String> lineOfText = new ArrayList<String>();
        static boolean flag = false;
        public static void main(String args[]) {

        public static void run(String args[]) {

                PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter("output.txt");
                String keyword = args[0];
                for (int i = 1; i < args.length; i++) {
                    Scanner in = new Scanner(new FileInputStream(args));
    int count = 0;
    while (in.hasNext()) {
    count++;
    String nextWord = in.next();
    lineOfText.add(nextWord);
    if (nextWord.equals(keyword)) {
    flag = true;
    if (flag == true) {
    System.out.print(args[i] + ": " );
    out.print(args[i] + ": " );
    for (String s : lineOfText) {
    System.out.print(s + " ");
    out.print(s + " ");
    System.out.print("\n");
    out.println(" ");
    lineOfText.clear();
    out.close();
    catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
    System.out.println("file not found!");
    catch (IOException e) {

    Thanks

    Well, I thought I had this program finished, then I realized I need to match the keyword anywhere in the file(including within a word) and print out each line that "contains" the keyword in each file. So, I need some way of testing to see if the keyword is a part of each word and then flag the line that contains the keyword. Is there some method to do this? Thanks
    Here's the code I have now:

            try {
                PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter("output.txt");
                String keyword = args[0];

                     out.print(args[k] + " ");
                     System.out.println("\n");

  • Adobe reader Standard 9 forget remove key from pc

    Hello guys
    My company bought 2 adobe reader 9 standard keys. One of the computers has been formatted and the key doesnt been removed. I have the key with me what can i do to install again using this key?

    You did remove anything related to Adobe Reader with the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility?
    What version of the Windows Installer (msi.dll) do you have? (And what Windows version?)

  • Filesystem read only after kernel compilation

    Hello,
    I builded my own kernel so I shouldn't need an initrd.  After a lot trial and error I finally have a booting kernel.  Funny thing is, that my root filesystem is read only.
    When I boot from the standard arch kernel, everything is fine.
    I thought it was because I have data=writeback in my fstab, but it isn't.
    Does somebody have an idea?  My filesystem is ext4.
    the only error message that is usefull, I think is something about /etc/sysinitrc line 301 /etc/mtab: mount read only.
    regards,
    Roel

    it's odd, but i think it needs the initrd to mount the root properly. in my case, without an initrd, the root being ext4, is mounted ext3.

  • How to populate read only input field or text view form value help only

    Hi experts,
    I have one requirement to populate a read-only field or text view from value help.
    User cant put any value there.value comes only from the value help.
    For example,
    when we read context using Code Wizard,we cant type any value there.value only comes from value help.
    How to implement that functionality?
    Please reply.
    Thanks in advance,
    Subhasis.

    Yes it is possible.
    1.Create a context Attribute and then bind this attribute to the Text view UI element.
    2. read context attribute and then set value to the context attribute like this way.
    DATA:
        elem_context1                        TYPE REF TO if_wd_context_element,
        stru_context1                        TYPE if_first=>element_context ,
        item_potxt                          LIKE stru_context-potxt.
    get element via lead selection
      elem_context1 = wd_context->get_element(  ).
    stru_context1-potxt = 'PO'.
    elem_context1->set_attribute(
        VALUE  = stru_context1
        name   = 'POTXT'

  • Read only access

    our risk team need to do a review of how our exchange 2010 environment is configured, but our change control team are concerned any queries they run across the system could affect or even change things. To mitigate this, is there any way to give the team
    full access so they can check how things are configured, but cover us so they couldnt innocently change a setting? So essential an exchange read only type admin account? from what I gather, most of the testing will be done using commands in exchange shell.
    i am wondering whether view only organisation mgmt may be an appropriate option?

    Hi
    View-Only Organization Management - This management role group allows members to view the configuration of any element found within the Exchange organization. Is this what you want?

  • Explanation / use of read-only zoning feaure on MDS products

    Does anyone know if the MDS product line will work in this way when licensed with the Enterprise option for the read-only zoning?
    I am trying to come up with a solution to provide real-time access to database files for a 2nd server that facilitates reporting applications. If I have LUNs that contain my primary database data and log volumes mapped to one server and create a 2nd read-only zone containing those LUNs, can I map those LUNs to a 2nd server as a kind of virtual/snapshot type instance?
    I know that this will throw some odd things at the application side as it may or may not recognize the LUNs at read-only and could store things in temp tables or memory that would be cached and not actual current data but we've dealt with that in our reporting applications in the past utilizing snapshot technology on our storage platform. The downside to using that is in updating the snapshot to more recent copies, you have to at least offline the database to create a new snapshot with the same name/location which introduces interruptions, timeouts, etc.
    Any feedback on how the read-only zoning feature is supposed to perform this type of functionality and/or real-world examples of how you are using it would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Justin Loucks

    I guess I'm not sure how to read some of this when it references different versions of SAN-OS code and Operating system levels. For instance, in the documenation for SAN-OS 3.0, I found the following:
    Read-only volumes are not supported by some operating system and file system combinations (for example, Windows NT or Windows 2000 and NTFS file system). Volumes within read-only zones are not available to such hosts. However, if these hosts are already booted when the read-only zones are activated, then read-only volumes are available to those hosts.
    From -- http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5989/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a0080662d35.html#wp1136509
    Does this mean that as long as it is not my OS boot volume it may work? Also, it references NT and 2000 but not Windows 2003. Perhaps that is something that works differently now. I guess I'll open a case with MS on that to see what they say.
    If anyone has already tried this or knows differently, please let me know. I just want to make sure I've exhausted all options here before I resort to Log shipping or some other software based solution.

  • IDCS3 opens documents "Read Only"

    We have 10 copies of CS3. Indesign in one copy will open some documents as "Read Only". If you close and reopen the document it will eventually (sometimes after three close and reopen cycles) open correctly. I've run all the usual diagnostics and even gone so far as to do an archive and install of the OS (10.4.11) What am I missing?

    This issue actually has nothing to do with file permisions. Rather, it is caused by the server and client computers having system clocks that are out of sync. Make sure that the date/time setting on your computer is the same as (or very close to) the date/time setting on the server.
    Time syncing as a very important factor with network file sharing. Because of the time discrepancy, InDesign is unable to create a lock file when the document is opened. Any document that is opened without a lock file being created is automatically flagged as read only to prevent someone else from opening and modifying the file at the same time.
